While she was not my lawyer directly she was my sisters. We were very pleased with Alexis and her fire and wit. She is smart and kind and can be as nice and sweet as she can be brilliant and direct. She handled our criminal case of opening a Medical Marijuana dispensary. We worked for a year and half with the county no ordnance was passed for or against. Well we were arrested 6 months after we opened. We are three sisters and a nephew sisters retired and in their late 50's and early 60's. We did nothing wrong and she defended us admirably. After two years the case was dismissed and we are to get all of our product back. She was true to her word on her costs with incidentals decided upon up front. Great lawyer. thank you Alexis the sisters

I hired Alex Landon at the recommendation of another attorney to help a college student in a marijuana-selling case. He was excellent. He explained the legal position, described his legal strategy. He was supportive and helpful and counselled the student to avoid such problems in the future. Very pleased with his attitude with a young person in a difficult situation. He got the best possible outcome.

I found Mr. Sanger through the review of his peers on this website; then meeting Mr. Sanger in person and having him handle my case, I’m of the opinion that he is truly the lawyer of lawyers. He examined my case from the macro to the micro, and how both sides of the matter might strategize or approach the issue. His office (Sanger,Swysen & Dunkle) is the definition of integrity and ethics. I’m grateful beyond words for his experience, knowledge and professionalism. If it’s your first time in trying to choose the finest lawyer for a matter that can’t afford mistakes, I highly recommend calling his office.

After going to another attorney, we found attorney de la Madrid and he was successful in getting a waiver for my mother. Attorney de la Madrid was patient with me and my mother when explaining the process. His office staff was also super helpful. If I'll need in the future, I will certainly go back to his office.

I hired Mr. Meister a year and four months ago for a second DUI charge. He greatly helped me through the process of getting my penalties all lowered or even taken away. Because of the negatives of my case, I could have easily done 1 month in jail. Instead, I was in their for less than 24 hours. I got my work release cut in half where people in my release program were doing almost 10x as many days(I had 5, couple dudes had 50!). I thanked Mr. Meister for this. That's not the best part. Almost a year later, I ran into some trouble that could seriously screw me with the law in regards to probation. Not knowing what to do and suffering from anxiety, I contacted Mr Meister to see if he could give me any guidance (I hadn't hired him or paid him anything and this situation was not in his area of expertise). This man agreed immediately and talked to me the following day. He told me what to do and gave me a blunt honest opinion of what I should do moving forward in regards to my lifestyle (showed me he really cared about me as a person). His honesty and care proved to me this man CARES about all his clients. I'm not wealthy either. If I ever am thinking of hiring a lawyer again (I hope not) or need to refer somebody to one, Steve Meister is the guy you want. The reason is because if I'm ever placing my freedom into someone else's hands, you bet your money on it that I'm calling on somebody who I trust and truly cares about me rather than my money. Thank you again for everything!!!

My family had problems with two estates. The trustees hadn't had very much experience and were failing to account, in addition to holding up money without disbursing when needed. I hired Mr. Murillo for his expertise with probate, which is very difficult in Fresno. Thank you for your hard work.

I would recommend Giavanna Concetta Deprima to anyone! She is very professional and responsive person, who takes your case in on a personal level. I am a single mom who has never had to seek professional help, and to tell you the truth, I was terrified on the way to my first visit. Once I got to the office, I felt welcome. Not only did that first visit get the ball rolling in my case, but after talking to Giavanna I felt like there was a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders. Now instead of going to court alone, scared and afraid I might lose by a technicality, I go in with my head high knowing that I have a friend fighting for me. By the way, she won my case!! Thank You Giavanna

Fantastic attorney - excellently handles all my legal affairs. Provides multiple routes, analyzes pros and cons of each, and executed a plan of action like a bull dog. Very humble and highly regarded, also speaks to the human element - he always made me feel, no matter how small some of my issues were, like I was his foremost priority. I would highly recommend Mr. Veracruz, and would continue to seek him all of my future endeavors first.

I would like to begin by saying, what a wonderful experience I had with Mr.Mousa. He is an excellent attorney and a very compassionate kind man.. He kept in touch with me on a regular basis and kept me informed about my son's case.. no matter how big or small the circumstances were. He believed in my son's innocence. He fought for my son and saved him from spending the rest of his life in prison. Mr.Mousa's hard word and dedication payed off. I would recommend Mr.Mousa to anyone out there who is seeking an honest hard working and dedicated attorney.

I hired Mr. Chu in a criminal matter that involved a false false accusation against me in the work place. I was in a desperate situation to clear my name and save my job. The accusation alone ruined not only my reputation but could have resulted in a termination of my professional license. My very livelihood was on the line. After doing my research, both word-of-mouth and internet searches, Mr. Chu was highly recommended by a family member. Mr. Chu made every effort to not only explain the charges and the legal process, but did so in a manner that felt I was his only client. He is extremely knowledgable and I immediately felt I was in good hands. Every step of the legal process no matter how big and small were throughly explained to me to allow me to be an active participant in my case. Not once did he fail to return my calls or emails. In fact, he would often check up on me regardless if he had any new developments to report. His reassurance and professionalism is uncanny. Fee's are extremely reasonable and most importantly affordable considering the level of expertise and service I have received. Needless to say, he managed to diligently advocate on my behalf which resulted in the charges being ultimately dropped. As such, I was full vindicated, my name cleared and still employed. If you have ANY criminal defense needs, the search ends here. =)

I met Steven 18 years ago, when I was desperately in need of a lawyer who would allow me a little input into my defense and a shot at feeling like I'd put up the good fight to prove my innocence. I was facing eight years. I interviewed half a dozen attorneys, or more. None impressed me like Attorney Maasz. His memory seemed photographic. His knowledge of the law was unmatchable. His attention and patience were juxtaposed to his energy and enthusiasm. He gave me hope where others had me more than a lot concerned that I'd be putting life on hold for a while. So I hired him and hoped for the best. I prayed for it, even. And the best is exactly what I got. We went to trial on a wing and a prayer with a creative defense that actually allowed the jury to see the truth of what had happened. The jury came rendered a not guilty verdict, of course, and much faster than we could've hoped for. This guy is a master of the Hail Mary, and I have to expect also every other defense admissible in court. The voir dire, or jury selection, is one of the most important parts of a trial. Get the wrong people, get the wrong verdict. Steven somehow pulled exactly the jury we wanted from an abundance of jurors who would not likely have been understanding of the facts of my case. I don't how he did it. The prosecutor was skillful, too; but he was no match for my counselor. His technique for presenting things was pretty amazing to watch, also. His manner was such that he shown the ugly facts in a very acceptable light. Then he communicated a deeper understanding of ideas and perspectives that would lead any reasonable person to the truth. He actually used his extensive understanding of the law to achieve real justice. He worked for it. He cared about it, about my future and my life. You don't forget the guy who pulled you out from in front of the firing squad. And you don't forget that he did for more than the money. He won my case because he cared, and I can't recommend him highly enough. Steven, if you see this, I hope y'all are doing well. It's been years, but you still have a friend here. Thanks again for your service. You're still the one good lawyer I've ever met.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
