I cannot recommend Joshua Needle highly enough. He is an excellent appellate lawyer, expert in criminal matters and a fine writer, a trait not shared by many of his peers. I engaged Josh three years ago to step in and write an emergency appeal for a case that was already on the appellate court’s calendar. The first attorney I hired completely bolloxed the appeal both in conception and execution. Josh was able to step in, review the (extensive) trial record, write a compelling brief and present oral arguments in an efficient and timely fashion. Subsequently, Josh provided immeasurable assistance when we found ourselves in arbitration with our original appellate attorney in an effort to retrieve a fee we felt wasn’t earned. The OCBA agreed with us and ordered the fee returned. Our relationship with Josh was extended when this attorney, rather than return the fee as ordered, instead sued us for breach of contract. Josh represented us through a ridiculous thicket of motions, discovery, expert witnesses, idiot judges, arbitration and resolution. Even though my relationship with Josh sprang from one appeal, circumstances enabled me to see Josh at work on three different actions. He demonstrated considerable legal breadth and helped rehabilitate my confidence in the legal profession.

I hired the George B Pacheco Law Firm to represent me in an Unlawful Detainer Case in which I was the Petitioner. That case quickly turned into a very complicated Probate Case in which I became the Respondent. After a two year HARD FOUGHT battle in Probate Court. Gia stuck to the facts of the case as she persisted against the most difficult opposition by the opposing side. Her keen grasp of the facts and her knowledge of the law prevailed in an overwhelming victory for truth and honesty. I prayed for guidance to the right person to handle this challenge and I was led to Gia Pacheco. I consider Gia Pacheco a gifted Attorney and I would hire her again if I should ever need Legal Services again. As a person I would be happy to call her friend.

I was appointed Lei-Chala due to a multiple offense count which included a felony. Being out of work I was appointed a public defender who happened to be Lei-Chala. At first there wasn't much communication regarding my case until after the initial no guilty plea. From that point on Lei-Chala gave my treatment that I haven't received from attorneys that I have hired for 20K+ in the past. She let me know that her husband also worked as a attorney for the county, I assume it was as a prosecutor but it had no bearing in my case. What turns out to be a mistake on the ADA fault was not willing to do any plea agreement prior to my trial. During readiness Lei-Chala was able to get all my charges dropped due to what amounted to false arrest by the police officers involved. I was ready to plea down to two misdemeanor charges, but when the ADA refused any negotiation Lei-Chala told her she would regret it. Turned out Lei-Chala was a probably a better attorney then I could have paid for. She really is what a public defender is for, doesn't treat every case like a burden. I would pay to have her represent me if I ever needed a great attorney. Highly recommend her services and professionalism.

I met with attorney Vince Wood for the first time and immediately felt comfortable and at ease. He made me feel relaxed and told me that everything was going to be okay. He talked me through the process in detail and reassured me that many people have had to go through similar challenges in their lives. I felt incredible shame, humiliation, and embaressment because of my financial situation. Vince made me feel so much better. I can honestly say that I felt absolved from the guilt of my past mistakes and believed that I could have another chance at a future with good credit and financial security.

I have to say I was unsure about Joe at first being public defender. We all hear how public defenders have too many cases so there's no time for them to do a good job. with Joe I found this very UNTRUE he did a great job and made the time to care! He made time to see my son as a person not another number on a court form. My son faced serious felony charges and prison time, he helped so much that my son didn't receive prison time at all. He helped offer consequences that he received with charges that will benefit him for life. Joe even had one on one talks with my son that changed the path he was on. My son has made big positive changes in his life due to all this. Having Joe as his public defender was the best thing for my son. I can't thank him enough!

Mr. Fujimoto will go above & beyond to defend his clients. Having him as your public defender is just as good as hiring private counsel. It is evident that he is passionate about his job and he really cares about his clients and goes out of his way to serve them. He spent almost an hour speaking with my boyfriend about his case after he was done for the day. Mr. Fujimoto is incredibly knowledgable and has a unique approach always thinking out of the box. He will be up front with his clients about the time that they are facing and he's very down to earth. My boyfriend was so LUCKY to be assigned to him. Thank you Mr. Fujimoto your hard work is greatly appreciated by us!

This guy is the man. He got my drug case dropped because of an illegal search. Public Defender told me to take the deal for 3 years in prison. Andy had the case thrown out. I love this Lawyer. Only hire him for your criminal matters. His whole law office is sharp. He never tried to bleed me dry for money like other lawyers. How much he says it is it is. No lies from this guy. Very high integrity and respected in the court rooms all over the different counties.

Ramon is an honest and straight-forward attorney who helped our family tremendously. We went from having visitation every other weekend to eventually obtaining full legal and physical custody. Ramon helped prove our case to the court and always had our best interest in mind. He always led us in the right direction and we are grateful for his assistance. I would not hesitate to recommend Ramon to anyone seeking an attorney.

I had Mr. Blackburn handle a very delicate case a few years ago that was going to cost me a high six figures to make go away. This case had me spent physically and emotionally on trying to resolve it myself. It began to tear the very fabric of my life at work and home that I almost made a financial suicidal mistake that would have made me file bankruptcy. I called Mr. Blackburn firm to set up a meeting so he could create a structure settlement with the other side that way it was binding. After Mr. Blackburn reviewed all the correspondence between me and the opposing party, he advised me that there was some inconsistency from the other parties and that they had wrongfully harassed me into agreeing on fees that were extortive. He ended up drafting demands that reduced an originally high six figure to a small three figure settlement. I’m forever indebted to Mr. Blackburn for his moral justice and never ending prowess in seeking what was right. If you feel like you are in a corner and there is no way out. Trust me and get Mr. Blackburn to work on your case. It’s the best decision you will ever make to getting back on track. Thanks again Mr. Blackburn for all you have done!!!

Rahel Kent is on top of things! I was hit by a vehicle in Los Angeles last year; I decided to hire Rahel when another lawyer made a colossal mess out of my case and nearly caused me to miss some deadlines. Rahel coached me through getting things back on track and all the gears began to turn in the right direction; Things I had worried about for months began to disappear and clear up. Rahel knows the law and knows how to talk to the right people in a way that gets surprising results. I am very happy with the settlement and all of the loose ends were tied up promptly. This lawyer is very proactive about the many details in your case and will keep you notified each step of the way. I could not have asked for a more equipped and hardworking lawyer than Rahel, I would recommend to anyone. Thanks again!

After getting so many different answers from different lawyers, we got lucky and met Andrea. Even though we were outside USA, Andrea did us a favor and accepetd our complicated case. Honestly, Andrea saved us so much time and so much money. From the beginning of our process, Andrea kept us informed about our case and made so many calls to help us with my wife's interview at the US emabassy in Turkey and.... Through Andrea's superb and umatched efforts, we did get my wife's green card. We owe our happy life in USA to Andrea Fatone.

During a time when we were hit with a surreal situation, Attorney Sara Ross made herself easily accessible to us, was realistic, but very gentle with the reality of what we were facing. She provided excellent representation. She was appointed to us as a public defender and I now know I wouldn't have wanted anyone else. I was grateful she was our attorney. Highly recommended and if she ever goes into private practice, I know she will be a great success!

I was initially apprehensive to have a public defender represent my case. I had heard stories that they were not as dedicated to the case as someone you personally chose and hired. I was proven wrong. From the beginning Carolyn was attentive to my position. She was willing to go the distance and I felt confident she was in my corner the entire time. She displayed exemplatory professionalism, and it was extremely apparent she was well educated in her field. We won our case! Thank you Carolyn!

David Zugman is an amazing lawyer. My previous lawyer I had for 9 months while i fought my case and kept telling me I was going to get a 10 year mandatory minimum. When my previous lawyer was dismissed due to a conflict of interest, David became my lawyer. From the beginning, I told him I would not sign of 10 years. He said give him a week. A week came and he brought me a 5 year deal. David fought for me every step of the way. He was also able to get me off probation early. I highly recommend David Zugman.

You could not be more fortunate to have an attorney like Galen working with you. There are plenty of family lawyers out there, and maybe you’ve interviewed a few, who can handle a basic divorce (if such a thing even exists). But Mr. Phillips has two attributes that are as rare as they are invaluable: wisdom, and the respect of his professional peers. Wisdom speaks for itself, and it will save you countless headaches, not to mention unnecessary fees, when you’re working with someone who has seen it all and gives you the best advice that cuts right through all the chatter. And just as important, Mr. Phillips is at the top of his field in the United States. So things just go a lot more smoothly when the opposing lawyers, and even the judges, hold your attorney in the very highest regard.

Laura Robinson was hired at the very end of a long court diversion program escapade in which I had ineffective assistance of counsel and things were a chaotic mess. I called her up and she spent several hours with me on the phone, despite this being the first time we had met or communicated. He agreed to meet with me the next day, in which she spent the entire afternoon with me. Laura took the time to learn the details of my case, and genuinely cared about me and my welfare. In the court room, he demeanor is sharp, and she has an innate ability to ask all the right questions such as to ensure that all the pertinent details will be included in the transcript, if needed for future use. She is unaffraid to defend her clients and her abandon in dealing with Judges and Prosecution is definitely an asset that I have not experienced with other 'attorney's' in the same area of practice. Laura Robinson is everything, AND MORE, that she advertises of herself. "I am dedicated to representing my clients as aggressively and effectively as possible. I have the reputation of a fighter who will pursue all legal means to provide the best defense possible. My reputation is among the most respected criminal defense attorneys in the bay area" I would recommend Laura Robinson to everyone whom inquired. And I would even advertise for her on my own as she is just that good.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
