I was in a terrible car accident with serious neck injury from a drunk driver. He was under insured but Ms. Monica was able to work on the case and got my medical and expenses taken care of as well as provide pain and suffering compensation. I would use her again if needed (hopefully not)! She stayed in constant communication with me and was a pleasant person to have on my side while dealing with this whole ordeal. Thank you Monica!! P. She was patient and always returned calls promptly. Kept me updated at all times. Even answered my dumb questions. She went way beyond the call of duty. She was there with us every step of the way and never doubted us. She stepped into a very difficult case that was ready to start trial and listened to us all of the time. She was extremely patient with the attention defict disorder we were working with. She knew exactly how to handle the difficlut times we had with understanding the full legal ramifications of the case. We were looking at nine years of prison time and our other lawyer threw in the towel and would not fight the case and had every excuse not to fight for us, he said he would, he lied and made a deal without us knowing, she would let us know every step of the way, I felt she was totally behind us every day, without a doubt she was spititually uplifting and made us feel very comfortable she is an outstanding lawyer.

Mr. Moore handled my divorce. I was in a bad relationship with a young son. Mr. Moore took the time to listen to me and help me understand the laws. He helped me and my ex-husband sell our house, deal with custody of my son and everything else in-between. I highly recommend his services if you are looking for an attorney who is dedicated to you and your issues.

Jim is both reasonable in a financial sense and as your Attorney. He innitiated the defense I needed that brought up certain facts into the record that would tend to help my monatary recovery in a civil case , now that we have been successful in obtaining a win in criminal court. Most Attorneys I've delt with refused to listen enough to understand my overriding issues .This type of practical common sense was well received by the Judges we were in front of.

About a year ago I caught a drunk driving case in San Mateo County. My cousin knew Kamran personally and told me that it might be worthwhile to at least chat it up with him to see what my chances were. I made an appointment and met with him at his office. He was polite, and very informative. I ended up hiring him to fight the court case and he walked me through every step so that I knew what was going on. Having him on my side made the process that much more bearable, and I ended up only having to do a couple days of community service for reckless driving instead of a full blown DUI.

William is by far the best APD ever. He is extreamly knowledgable and informative. He is on top of returning calls or messages. He is a lawyer that is extreamly emotionally involved in his cases therefore making him the best APD to ever represent any client in court. I highly recommend him as an attorney to represent you in any case. If he is asked a question and its not his "field" of law he will tell you "That is not my area of law" not try to pretend he knows. He is an extreamly honest person and attorney. Your very lucky if you ever have this man represent you in front of the courts.

Mr. Bassett has helped us three times, and each time his advice led to a successful outcome for us. He always puts our interests ahead of his own. In one situation, his advice included that we were better off without a lawyer; he advised us how to proceed on our own, and it worked out perfectly. In another situation, Mr. Bassett helped us more than the lawyer we had hired to help us.

James McNamara has been my attorney in several cases, most of which were last minute giving him only days to prepare. Each case ended favorably on my behalf, thanks to James' expertise, professionalism, and concern for his clients. I would recommend James to anyone, regardless of the nature of the case. He does not judge you or make you feel ashamed in any way, and his knowledge of the criminal justice system is superb, which I can say from personal experience, will make you feel at ease and confident that you picked the right person to represent you in court. I give James a 5 star rating, hands down and without hesitation.

The best thing anybody can say about a lawyer it that they are fair. Mr. Kraus is very honest, fair, and ethical. His phone calls are fast, to the point, and therefore inexpensive. Anybody who has worked with legal representation knows the sound of the cash register ringing when you have long phone calls with your lawyer. Many lawyers drag out these calls longer than need be, and when you get the detailed invoice there are all types of “surprises.” Not so with Ed. He lets you know the status of the case, what is going on, and waste no money getting the case wrapped up. He has been described to me by other lawyers as a “pit bull” and I can see why. He can be as friendly and as tough as he needs to be. His knowledge of the law is amazing, and his honesty is very nice to see in the legal business. I can not rave enough about Ed and his firm, and I hope I never need to have a lawyer again, but if I must, I know whom I will be calling.

Chris Cosca is world's greatest attorney, who not only saved my husband from going to jail but also restored our faith in the legal system. My husband had been convicted of multiple felonies in the past, and when he was charged with yet another crime, we had little hope of him escaping a prison sentence. That's when we reached out to the world's greatest attorney, and from the moment we met him, we knew we were in good hands. He patiently listened to our case and assured us that he would do everything in his power to get the best possible outcome for my husband. He meticulously studied every aspect of the case and tirelessly worked to build a strong defense strategy. Chris knows the Sacramento Court system, his previous work & relationships with the Sacramento County DA office give him an edge other attorneys do not have. In the end, my husband was placed on probation! An outcome that with out Chris would have been impossible! We were overwhelmed with relief and gratitude. We knew that it was all thanks to the world's greatest attorney, who fought tirelessly for my husband's freedom. In conclusion, I cannot recommend the world's greatest attorney enough. He is not only an incredibly skilled legal practitioner but also a compassionate human being who genuinely cares about his clients. If you are ever in need of legal assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to him.

I have an extensive criminal record and have been represented to by everyone from the best money can buy/trial attorneys you read about in the newspapers to the worst of the court appointeds and Arvin is an absolutely magician. He did for me what no other attorneys thought possible and he did it for half the price. I was in prison in Michigan awaiting extradition to California to serve a 2yr sentence and I hired Arvin. He got the judge to lift his extradition warrant and allow me to appear solely on Mr. Sachdeva's word that I would be there. I was released in Michigan with no parole, which is absolutely unheard of in this state because they were under the impression that I was already sentenced to 2yrs in CA and would then be on parole there when I got out. This was more than just an impression as it is what the official extradition paperwork reflected and the judge had ordered. I appeared in court in Orange County with Mr. Sachdeva by my side and the judge revoked my sentence and re-sentenced me to time served and allowed me to return to MI, NO PAROLE, NO PROBATION. The judge told me you can thank your attorney as he's been in my courtroom countless times fighting for you and prepared an absolutely phenomenal motion arguing for what I'm about to do, SENTENCE SUSPENDED! I had been sentenced to 2yrs for absconding from probation, leaving the state and picking up 5 new felony charges. Arvin answered my numerous out of state phone calls from prison and worked harder for me than any of the countless attorneys I've hired in the past, most of whoms names are recognized in legal circles nationwide. If I ever were to be in trouble in CA again I'd rather have Arvin one my side than any Harvard educated trial attorney. Judges respect him and he works harder than any attorney I've ever seen. #1 on my list of up and coming super lawyers!

I was being wrongfully charged with commercial burglary of the 2nd degree and grand theft for an incident that occurred at my previous place of employment, a large retailer where I had grabbed another employee's purse by mistake rather than my own as I made my way out to lunch. Mr. Herman Holland had faith in the strength of my case and fought for me all the way to the end of the trial, having prepared a deft strategy which convinced a 12-person jury that the evidence could not prove the intent behind the acts. I was acquitted on both counts because of Herman's compassion, his belief that I'm not a criminal, and the amount of work that he put in my case. Every once in a long while, you come across someone who touches your life. Herman Holland is one such person, and I will continue to endorse him and the San Francisco Public Defender's Office to anyone who's being charged with a crime in San Francisco County.

Chris was referred for his expertise in a complex legal matter in which time was highly sensitive. He clearly shows both professionalism and depth of knowledge where criminal matters and family law intersect. I was grateful for his honest advice and action-oriented strategy to use his network to bring in co-counsel if necessary. Getting answers and moving quickly to find solutions to my case was so helpful after the disappointment of working with other attorneys who misled me regarding their scope of practice and experience. It's a relief to know there are attorneys like Chris who use your time efficiently, you can fully trust their expertise and will do anything to help you find solutions.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
