Jody was assigned to me as my public defender when I had to deal with a drug charge a few years back. I was basically ready to simply plead guilty and pay the fine/attend the classes/do whatever I needed to do to move on with life. After hearing the details of the case, Jody recommended I plead not guilty. I did so and the case was put on hold for a few months. On the next court date I was astounded at the amount of preparation he put into making all of the points to make the case. I don’t want to butcher the legal lingo, but I really really really appreciated what he did for me and the outcome HE created. I think about Jody on a regular basis and figured I’d look him up and was surprised he didn’t have any reviews yet…figured I needed to be the first! Thanks again so much…I know I’m just a blip in your 10000 cases, but you’re incredible at what you do and it doesn’t go unnoticed.

My real estate company hired Mr. Arbel to handle a legal issue between us and a large financial institution. I am more than happy with the results he obtained. The problem had been persisting for many months before we contacted Mr. Arbel, who resolved it in only two and a half weeks. He secured a settlement for us that complied with all of our demands. Mr. Arbel was diligent in keeping us informed of what he was doing and was persistent in getting answers from the opposing. His rate was very reasonable and he provided a log of all of his hours and work done. I definitely recommend Mr. Arbel as an attorney for any legal matter!

Al Stokke worked with Ed Welbourn on my case, and I am so thankful that he did. Al was actually the first person I met at CWS. It is a testament to both the collaborative nature of the firm and Al’s own self-confidence that he chose to bring in Ed Welbourn and eventually allow him to take the lead on my case. Al is the old gentleman of CWS, and in every interaction I had with him—from meetings to court appearances—I was struck by the weight of his experience. He knows case law going back decades, like all good lawyers, but he knows it personally. Al’s experience and expertise proved profoundly helpful to both me and my wife as we faced the charges against me and considered our options throughout the legal process. I am so thankful he was a part of my team.

Hired Mr. Stotter to defend me in a DUI case. I crashed my car after a medical emergency, but I had alcohol and medications in my system so they arrested me for DUI. I had a prior felony DUI, so they wanted state prison! Mr. Stotter refused to settle the case and fought all the way to trial. Our witnesses convinced the jury to dismiss all the charges.

Farzad took our small music group and created the contracts that have allowed us to scale internationally. Part of the reason is that he actually used to make and sell music when he was younger - so he gets it. The man takes the time to listen to all of the details about our deals. We could tell that he listened very carefully because when the contracts were drafted, we found that he crafted unique solutions to our problems and built in protections to limit our legal risk. We're going to be coming back to him as we keep growing.

I was involved in a serious car accident and the insurance company attempted to exclude part of my damages on a legal technicality. John and his staff zelaously protected my interests and the insurance company eventually accepted full liability on behalf of their insured. My settlement fully compensated me for my damages. On a personal level, John was always a pleasure to deal with. He was always available to answer my questions and concerns, and he did so in a way that did not make me feel I was wasting his time. I wholeheartedly recommend John as an attorney.

Words are so inadequate with which to express how truly grateful I am for all Attorney Peacock did for me and how highly I recommend him for your legal needs. I found him on line and only spoke to him over the phone since I was out of state. He was so professional, knowledgeable and nonjudgmental that I hired him on the spot. Attorney Peacock went to court on my behalf and got my charges reduced to a misdemeanor which was a herculean feat. He miraculously and skillfully got all this done without my having to travel and appear in court. Attorney Peacock is generous, patient, caring and obviously has the respect and regard of the legal community. He always kept me informed and went above and beyond what I could have hoped for. I can truly say he gave me my life back. If you need an attorney, Stephen Peacock is the one you want. Thank you Attorney Peacock!!

What makes Grace different from other attorneys is she feels deep empathy for the people she represents. She takes on their fight, even if it is uncomfortable for her. Technically, Grace is a talented and deft attorney. She is level headed and presents a cool demeanor, especially when tensions are high. This enables her to be calm, logical and clearly lead the path forward. If she thinks you are innocent or wrongly accused, she becomes a true advocate. Grace is a seasoned professional, but maintains her belief in justice for all. She is not in the legal profession for money, and could have easily been in a more lucrative career. I am extremely grateful that she helped me and my family.

In mid-2005 I found myself charged with two counts. Rachel Hill took the case and from the beginning worked hard investigating the case and charges against me. Her reassurance, confidence in our case, and the competence she displayed in her exchanges with the prosecution as well as the judge eased many of my concerns. In 2006 she was able to secure a ruling whereby all charges were dismissed “in the furtherance of justice.” I will always be grateful to her for all of the hard work she put in on my behalf. Thank you Rachel Hill.

I'm the Mother of Chad D. Mosher and last yr. my son got into some trouble transporting Mexicans from Mexico to San Diego, on a boat, and when he got caught all I could think was he's going to be in jail for a long time. He was looking at 5yrs and we both thought this is it. Well for 40 days his girl and I where trying to get him out on bail, and then we where blessed finally and home he came. Well his attorney Martha Hall was a little fire cracker and her and Chad bonded right away, she went above and beyond duty to help my son. Well to make a long story short, Chad was out on bail for 13 months and two weeks ago he went for sentencing. Well Ms. Martha Hall had my son's best interest at heart and turned that 5yrs into 40 days time served and 3yrs probation. Chad has alot of work to do but the faith and trust Martha put in him has changed his outlook on life and himself. I love my son and this has brought us together also. So I could go on and on about how much we love and respect you Martha Hall, thank you from the bottom of my heart.

When I met Kelsey for the first time, I knew she was the right lawyer to help me, and she did an excellent job. She got my sentence reduced and was better than I hoped for. She did a great job keeping me updated, made sure that I wouldn't miss any deadlines and always made sure I had the info I needed. She was very responsive throughout the entire process. She did my court appearances which I am so thankful for as I didn't have to take off of work to attend. I would recommend her to anyone in need of an attorney! Thank you, Kelsey!!!!

Jessie Morris saved my life and my freedom in 1983. Jessie was my attorney in a criminal case in Sacramento court in a jury trial. I was in jail awaiting trial for a year because I was not able to bail out financially. Jessie fought very hard for me in trial and the end results was not guilty of all 15 count charges. I walked out of the court house the same day and return to my military career and finished my 20 years of service. I never forget Jessie for his service and dedication as my lawyer to this day. thank you Jessie and god bless you.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
