I consulted with Attorney Ray on several complicated issues that involved nuanced bankruptcy and family law matters. She had an abundance of knowledge and I felt safe and informed after our meetings. I highly recommend her if you are looking for an established attorney that fights for her clients, knows what she is doing, and is up-to-date with the changes in law.

He missed so many problems in my parenting decree that I am left never seeing my kids, he had me plead to D&N case from when my ex attacked me, he convinced me that since I was there I would be found guilty anyway! I was very ill at the time and couldn't devote the proper thought to my case or I would've fired him right then, instead he finished out that and my divorce, leaving me in a terrible state of parenthood.

When he handled a case in which I was the victim, Jbili showed up with no investigator’s notes and no idea what, if anything, the county’s investigators had discovered. Ironically, the accused was readily available and easily located had Jbili only done his job. Due to his lack of professionalism the guilty party walked. Maybe he’s mended his ways but my experience is that once a lawyer is a slacker he’ll always be a slacker.

Mr. Jbili, is an in competent attorney. Takes your money and you get a plea deal. Mr. Jbili is not in it to fight for you he’s in it to make a quick 5,000.00. Then he forces you to take a plea. That’s why he’s cheaper than other well know. Attorneys because he is not willing to fight for you. And everything you ask him is always bad news. Never anything positive from this man. He is not an honest attorney and he was conversating with the so called victim, who set me up. Please if you care about your family member do not retain this man. He’s not worth it. He lies also. I had been going through a terribly contentious divorce where my ex was totally uncooperative with the orders of the court and left me in a very difficult position. She was ordered to participate in the division of marital property including dividing the home equity, and bank accounts, savings bonds and mutual funds. My ex did her best to block nearly everything that was ordered by the court and after some good work from my original lawyer after some time this lawyer just gave up. I then hired David Gibans and it was one of the best moves I ever made. David stepped into the breach picking up the pieces and worked to get a Promissory Note created for half the equity in my former marital home as ordered by the court. David Gibans actually had to go to the court and have the court create the Promissory Note since my ex would not do what was required. We then proceeded to get a number of retirement mutual funds divided as was ordered by the court. Again, the ex was totally uncooperative and only with great persistence were we able to get the assets divided by the very hard work from David Gibans. After several years of legal fighting, we were finally able to get done what was ordered by the court. Only recently did we finally complete the divorce settlement with the forced sale of the marital home and the division of the home equity. Again, my ex was totally uncooperative, and we had to take her to court via a contempt action. This was only accomplished only by the incredibly hard work provided by a lawyer the likes of which you would be hard pressed to find anywhere. I cannot make a higher recommendation for a lawyer who will sit down with you and understand you needs and will work tirelessly to get justice you deserve. David will sit down and really listen to you and his knowledge of the law and the courts would be very hard to top. David is a true professional and is a great attorney. I would be in a very difficult situation without David’s hard work and I cannot thank him enough.

I had finally come to the realization that my ugly marriage of 15 years was no longer working out and that it was simply time to move on. The normal worries continued to creep up. Would I be able to see my kids as much as i wanted? How much would i lose in the divorce? I was referred to David by a friend and could not have been happier with the results, from the initial conciliation, to the final outcome. David was professional, honest, and above all else i felt that he truly cared instead of many lawyers who just see you as a case number. He kept me up to date throughout the process and was incredibly prepared for trial. I ended up with a result that my friends told me was not possible, but he his continued resilience and full-on attitude got me majority custody, with less loss capital than i anticipated. I would truly recommend David to anyone in need of a lawyer who does not want to be overcharged or go through the big corporations.

David Gibans was totally inept in the courtroom and his preparation work before trial turned out to be equally bad. I can't know the reason why, but he could NOT complete a thought or follow his own line of questioning in court. He would ask the first question of a witness and then lose his focus and ask no further questions. He started questioning my ex by handing her the wrong document to read. He would take notes as if he had the next question ready, but then just stare at that piece of paper and never think of the question I thought he had prepared. (This was when the judge would tell him he seemed to be intentionally slowing the trial.) I fired him mid-trial after the judge accused him three times of intentionally slowing the trial and my uncle, who came from Maryland to watch the trial, told me at the first break that, "Your lawyer is inept!" Before trial, Gibans had me send him the same documents two, three, or more times when he could not remember them from other times--and, of course, he charged me for each time. He had me prepare document packets to show proof of my ex's lies. I created 20 of these packets, and he told me they were just what he wanted, but he submitted NONE of them to the court!!! When I told him I wanted a refund, he refused and threatened that if I pursued things with my charge card companies to stop payment of just some of the legal fees, he threatened to put a lien on my house--which is now being forced sold because of his ineptness. Trustworthy? NO WAY!!!!! My case involved 3 mental illnesses on the part of my partner and "gay issues," and I tried to tell him many times that it was NOT going to be the simple contract issue he thought. He would not listen to me. He didn't bother to even research the issues of this trial, so his knowledge base was very limited. He was horrid at keeping me informed about anything. When I would ask him how he was going to use those packets or what his plan was for trial, I consistently got "I don't know yet" and/or "I haven't decided yet." David Gibans is NEITHER a capable mediator nor litigator. We got one shot a mediation and I had assumed he would lead the way. He did nothing but stop me from presenting the 5 packets about lies that I had prepared at that point, saying, "Not now." I assumed he had other plans for them. WRONG! I paid him $40,000 to be totally inept! Avoid this lawyer at all costs--literally!!! I would also suggest that you always stick with a lawyer in the same town. I was in Colorado Springs and the judge had no clue who Gibans was and seemed to have that bias about "out-of-town" lawyers--not to mention the extra legal fees in driving time for every hearing and court date.

JLongtin Law was recommended to me by someone at NAMI Law Line. I found this firm to be highly unethical and frequently dishonest. Jen Longtin won't see you without charging $175 for an hour long "working session" when other attorneys offer a free hour long consultation. I scheduled a session with the explicit agreement up front that Jen would be my attorney. Halfway through, she told me two of her junior staff would be taking my case. I had no say. She ended the working session early but charged the full amount. They were supposedly giving me the CARe discount, so I thought it was worth giving them the benefit of the doubt. I was wrong. When I checked in later about other fees, Jen changed them and didn't recall her original quotes. It was obvious that Jen and her team weren't attorneys I could count on. I let them know I was firing JLongtin Law and Jen Longtin informed me they'd "expedited" my case during a holiday week and gone through my entire retainer in the two days between the working session and the day I fired them. What a surprise. JLongtin Law can't be trusted.

Unfortunately, I have the jaded reputation of a serial criminal defendant for over the last thirty years. Accordingly, I know what separates an exceptional criminal defense attorney from the crowd of disasters. Associates, friends, inquirers, and even one court clerk have asked me, "How is it possible that (I) can continue to remain at large." To all inquirers I say, "The secret to liberty is in having an exceptionally good defense attorney," and my not-so-secret weapon in court is Jennifer. She is so good in court in court, that she is not only entertaining, but she even convinces me that I'm not guilty. I fully recommend her and her law firm to anyone who has the need of an attorney offering exceptionally superior defense.

No one wants to hire a defense attorney. Unfortunately, there are circumstances that warrant a person's need and right to hire a lawyer. I was recently in this boat and had the honor and pleasure of working with Jen. Jen stood by my side during the entire process. Having zero relationship with the court system she was able to answer all of my questions during the process no matter how trivial. She also was able to explain everything in terms that made sense to me. I would recommend Jen to anyone that needs a defense attorney she is kind, understanding and tough as nails in the courtroom.

I owe u bigtime! I had criminal case and went to court without a lawyer. The judge said I needed one, and I saw Mike in court. He looked and talked like the smartest guy there and I talked to him outside. He was real easygoing. Not like most lawyers, who are real dicks. They think they're god's gift, if you know what I mean. We went to court a bunch of times and nothing. I told Mike, "I can't do jail. I can't do jail. Whatever you got to do to keep me out of jail." He kept telling me to relax. Let him worry about it. The day of trial, the DA offered a deal. It was a lot better then the 2 months of jail they wanted before. It was only 30 days staying at home with 2 years probation. Mike told me they didn't have a case and the reason they dropped was because they were weak. I told him 30 days on the ankle monitor was perfect. He said let me see if I can do better. And he made me a deal. He said if he can't do better than 30 days, he would give me all my money back. He went to talk to the DA in the hallway, and I was standing about 10 feet away. The DA offered 10 days, Mike said...."Are you f-ing kidding me. I don't even have to present a defense and we win. Just dismiss it and I'll buy ya lunch. Call it a good day" The DA, who was a real a-hole to me, said, "Come on, what do you want?" Mike said, "Dismiss it...or let's just go to trial. I'm board. I cleared two days for this, so F-it...let's go." They dropped everything! Now that's what I'm talking about! That guy has some big ass balls because I didn't think we had a chance to win the trial. He did. Mike...thanks. You saved my ass. I know your real low-key and don't want no publicity. But I had to. I owe you bigtime brother.

Michael represented my son in a criminal case and from the moment we first met at his office to the end he was incredible. He did everything he said he would and more. When we went to trial, he explained exactly how we were going to win, and it was unbelievable. The district attorney did everything Michael said he would do. Michael had everything covered and the jury loved him. There is something about him that juries love. I don't know what it is. I know he's really cute and very friendly and a nice guy and from just listening to him you know he's super smart. But there's something else about him that people just like him and want to believe him. I'm so happy for my son that we found him. God bless you, Michael.

I unfortunately hired Devon Neill to represent me in a personal injury claim. I found Devon Neill very unprofessional, incompetent and constantly out lawyered by the insurance company’s lawyer, I thought it was bad. I did not find her aggressive as she stated to me in the beginning. I attended several hearings with Devon Neill. My observations were that Devon Neill lacked basic legal knowledge on numerous occasions, such as Bates Labeling. I found Devon Neill’s representation so unprofessional and dishonest that I filled a complaint with the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel. After their investigation, the Office of Attorney Regulation Counsel gave Devon Neill a diversion agreement. In my opinion, hiring Devon Neill is the worst thing I ever did. Please do not make the same mistake.

Truth be told - This attorney did not honor his original fee negotiation, deceived his client and inflated his bill. Then he emptied bank accounts of his client's friend to pay himself - with the blessing of a judge's order. Is this fair and ethical practice? He knew exactly what he was doing.

Patrick came highly recommended as a top lawyer who has a lot of intergrity. He's an attorney who knows the law and quickly researchs issues that he may not be as fimiliar with. Patrick took our son's case when he assualted someone. Our son faced several charges; including attempted 1st degree murder. Patrick went to visit him in the county jail and immediately observed and believed something was wrong with his demeanor. Because of Patrick's familiarity with human behavior and knowledge regarding people in custody after his visit with our son, he recommended our son be immediately evaluated by a doctor. This lead to several doctors evaluating him and our son being diagnosed with a severe mental illness. Due to our son's diagnosis Patrick was able to begin discussing a strategy for our son's case and built a winning team to assist in his court case. Patrick was very honest regarding what we were facing as a family, including the charges, the time frame of the case in each scenario, and the financial aspect. We were impressed with Patrick's assentiveness in learning everything he could regarding our son's mental illness to better serve him in his criminal case. During the entire case Patrick was available for our son and our family. As a family there was never a time we felt like Patrick wasn't available or that we didn't know what was happening in our son's case. Patrick is dependable and his communication was more than exceptional rather it was in person, telephone or email. He always knew where we were in our son's case and the next steps in the legal process. Patrick knows the law. Our son was more than a case for Patrick and he fought for our son's life, rights and his freedom. We would recommend Patrick to anyone. Our son pleaded Not Guilty By Reason Of Insanity and won!

Jennifer Wunsch helped us when our son were in trouble after getting a DUI in Boulder, Colorado. We were out of the country for that year, so it was really hard for us to help our son in person. Jennifer Wunsch did an excellent job with our son, talked us through the whole process, kept us informed and gave us great advice during this process. Our son was very pleased with her, and we will highly recommend Jennifer Wunsch to anyone that need legal advice. First of all she was more professional than any of the other lawyers we talked to - and secondly she never failed once in any way to keep us updated, and with the advice she gave our son and us we could not be more grateful to her. On top of it she were very respectful and understanding towards us, and had a very kind way of helping us through this tough and challenging time. Talking with my probation officer prompted me to write this as she informed me how unprofessional his actions were during the case. He completely misinformed me during the court process on several matters. He frequently had to be reminded of the case, even in court I had to correct him. He was more interested in getting paid than properly representing his client. His first impression was forceful but that quickly turned to an aura of laziness, dragging the case out much longer than it needed to be. He had to be reminded consistently to follow through on actions, often doing so the day of or before the next court appearance. I made a poor mistake hiring this highly unprofessional lawyer to represent me.

Over two thirds of the charges were very serious non-violent felonies. I was completely innocent of all charges but was involved in the case because I was hired by a company to work part time (roughly 8-10 hrs/week). After being arrested I came to find out that the company I worked for and all of the owners were into some very shady dealings. Unfortunately every employee that worked for this company guilty or innocent was arrested & accused of being involved in a criminal conspiracy. I had no previous knowledge of Rob Bernhardt & his staff until a good friend of mine referred me to Rob. 1 day later Rob showed up in person at Denver County to meet with me and discuss the situation. There was very little pressure from him to hire but he did mention he was absolutely the person for the job as he only deals with criminal cases. After hiring Rob I knew immediately I had made the right decision. I had complete trust in him from day 1 and knew he was doing everything possible to fight the false charges against me. He continued to work extremely hard in consistently speaking with the DA on my behalf. I was facing many many years in jail and potential of being a convicted felon....I know Rob & his team spent hundreds of hours reading and combing through thousands of pages of discovery regarding my case, over 3 terabytes of data. It was a very large and complicated case that took over 9 months to be resolved and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. He was able to get all 11 charges dismissed & I know it was not an easy process. I would highly recommend Rob & his Office Manager/Paralegal Nic to anyone looking for representation. Rob is extremely trustworthy, has an amazing work ethic, knows Colorado Law inside and out, has great communication skills, and is a bulldog with the DA or the state when that's whats needed. When your reputation, your business, and most importantly your freedom is on the line and about to be taken away there is no other attorney I would trust or recommend more than Rob Bernhardt.

Near the beginning of 2015 I was falsely accused of a serious crime that threatened to ruin my reputation and greatly limit my freedom for life. When it first happened I hired a law firm that specialized in that type of crime and after putting down a large portion of my life savings, I thought that I had made a wise decision. The lawyer assigned to me was young and did not seem very enthusiastic about his work. Rather than work on a defense for me he referred me to specialists to pay more money for information that we would submit to the district attorney in hopes to compel them to take it easy on me. After spending thousands more on these services and getting nowhere with the DA, I was broke and heading to trial with a lawyer I couldn't trust... if I made another hefty deposit. Stuck in a bad spot, a friend of mine referred me to a lawyer who had helped him in a DUI case. It was Rob Bernhardt. After meeting him, I felt reinvigorated. I knew I was innocent and I had a lawyer I knew was going to battle with me. Rob gave me confidence and hope when no one else could. After making attempts to get somewhere with the DA, it was clear we would have to take them to court and win. With class and intellect, Bernhardt exposed the "witnesses'" and accuser's lies. He took on the prosecution's attempts to smear me. He rightfully proved to the jury that I was an innocent man. And in the end, I was acquitted. My life that was almost destroyed by a vindictive person and an overzealous district attorney was restored. My reputation saved. I cannot ever thank Robert Bernhardt enough for helping me in a time of dire straits and for doing so at a price I could afford. I recommend him to everyone who needs a lawyer and have referred multiple people to him. I would hire him again in a heartbeat.

He's not even worth the one star. I'm super disappointed and cheated out of thousands of dollars. He refused to talk to me on the phone, so attention to my case only happened by email which then ended up costing me more and more money. Every email he reads or responds to is timed and billed for but with no result. He seems confused about details and even charged me hundreds of dollars to give me answers with paperwork I had already sent him to begin with. His paralegal is no better as she is not at all helpful and downright rude once she has your retainer. Save your money and don't make the same mistake I did.

Tom chased our case from the onset. Promise after promise. Wanted our money. He is very short and stocky with Napoleon complex. He treated us with none of the respect the other reviewer noted. Did nothing after we paid him. Now we are fighting for our kids life and getting a new attorney. Go elsewhere for juvenile defense!!!!!!!

I retained Tom to help me with a criminal matter even though I was an attorney myself. He was very effective and quick in dealing with the matter and got me a very good result. He did so even though I was emotionally a mess at the time. He was unfailingly polite, considerate, and effective. He was absolutely caring and paid attention to the case at all times. I feel like he is a friend as well as an attorney. He is very effective and willing to work hard for a good outcome.

The senior associate Katherine Karstetter allows her clients to violate laws and encourages them to file false government reports saying they have a right. Falsifying reports to the FBI, police, making calls to anyone who knows me and scouting USA is not okay trying to get me fired, and trying to stop my advocacy, training and support of disabled, low income, and children is not okay. Shame on you. Glad you defend people who have no defense. It is okay for your client to have my information my family's information our addresses, phone numbers, license plate numbers on sticky notes in her possession. You defend and believe pathological liers who report false felony accusations, who has a personality disorders when you know they are mentally ill. Shame on you. Abusing and neglecting your child is not okay, and continuing to affect children's and others mental health, and physical health with inappropriate interactions is not okay. Your law firm should be about facts and the truth not defending blatant liers and allowing them to stalk and abuse people. But yes you are a shoulder to cry on that obviously does not have the mental capacity or morals to distinguish right from wrong. Shame on you.... You said I court anyone has a right to file complaints so here it is. You are a guardian ad lidium Shame on you, you do not protect anyone.

I would give zero stars if I could. I was supposed to be served with court papers and he emailed me an attachment with an unfinished report without the case number and no court room. It said if you can not make it to court you can attend through WebEx. He sent me to the wrong court room on the wrong county. I still have not been served papers probably. They will not return my calls or texts.

Most times when you hire a defense attorney, chances are it is not for a pleasant situation. What made it a lot more enjoyable was the professionalism of this law firm! Every single staff member that I met was extremely professional and friendly. I had the pleasure working with them for approximately one year. Anytime I emailed or called, they responded in a timely manner. They explained the whole process and answered all my questions. They are extremely knowledgeable and amazing at what they do! I can not thank Max, Marianne and Hailey enough for all their hardwork and dedication!!! If you find yourself in a situation where you need a defense attorney, hire the best! If you want the best, then hire this law firm!

A few years back they represented a family member of mine in a fairly serious felony matter. Michael handled the case promptly, kept them out of jail and was able to get them a differed disposition that kept the matter of their record. I’d highly recommend calling him for any legal issues that might arise.

I had a horrible experience with this lawyer and I was not the only one. My best friend hired her to help with a divorce. My friends' husband disappeared for over 5 years and showed up after he found out that he could make a profit since their house gained value. He only paid $ 2000 for a lawyer and received 50% of all assets after being gone and not paying any bills for over 5 years. My friend got the same 50% and paid Patricia 3 times more. I hired her and never went to her office to discuss my case. She filed my divorce forms online which cost little fees but she charged thousands of dollars for a phone call. She does not care about her clients. I fired her and had to pay a high charge to get rid of her services. She is extremely unprofessional.

You'll notice that her ratings have only gone downhill in the more recent years, and this is not a coincidence. She worked on a case for my father-in-law back in 2015 and was exceptional in the courtroom. Based on her past performance, I used her for my child custody support hearing in 2020 and a landlord dispute around the same time, and she was nowhere near the same level of prepaid or willing to argue my points in the courtroom (I honestly think she didn't prepare until the morning of and it showed). She just didn't have any fight in her and was more interested in compromises even in the face of significant evidence in my favor. She will not look at your case until the day of court and still ask you questions that you clearly explained to her in email and other communications that she can reread. Oh, but don't worry, she will charge you for everything you send her, even though she clearly won't even read it during that time. In my child custody hearing the day before court, she asked me to send her all the relevant messages between me and my ex. I already sent them a month prior, and I highlighted the details I thought were important. I was charged for emailing her the month prior because it is "communication," then I got charged again for the same when I resent her the same emails. After hiring this attorney, I am almost $10,000 in debt, and she gave my ex everything her attorney asked for in court and did not (DID NOT!) put up any fight or present my side. I left the courtroom feeling like my side was completely unheard. I was just shocked by the whole thing and found it unbelievable. For how much she charges, you can find a better attorney.

She is a nightmare, she is an alcoholic who is incompetent and plays ball with the opposing attorneys. She will not have your interest in mind only billing you as much as possible. I had to fire her and file a complaint with the Colorado attorneys board. She sat on my case till the last minute which made it impossible for an applet level attorney to enter to fix what she let go because of her personal bias against me. It resulted in me losing custody of my children. She shouldn't have licensure to practice. Stay far away

I went and did a consult back in 2015 and hired Jill. She jumped the gun, filing all these restrictions, causing issues with the judge as well as my common law partner. In the end, she charged me 3000$ for less than 5 hours of "work" the consult, phone calls, and 30 minutes in court, no refund of excess funds, which I've hear is her MO,- "there will never be a refund"- I heard she is gone, which is to the benefit of the community of Montezuma county.

I went to Jill for my divorce and domestic violence case. My ex husband was stalking me across the country. She didn't take the situation seriously. She was rude, FORGOT that I also needed a divorce, not just a restraining order....I had to remind her when our second consult was almost over. She told me I needed to hire services that were unnecessary and expensive. Very unprofessional. I feel like if I kept her on my case, it would not have helped me at all. I didn't end up hiring her, i represented myself instead. Saved a lot of money and learned a lot. I definitely feel like she would've extorted me more than help.

I paid a $150 consult fee for a habitability issue with landlord. Carlson took all my organized paperwork, advising me of a $1500.00 fee to rep me in a civil "trial" for habitability. Carlson advised me "If we do not go to trial she would return most of the $1500.00", I paid Carlson $1500.00. Instead of copying my paperwork and returning all my original documentation, she kept it. I had a sheriff at the place in question , I could not produce my lease as she had it. Charging me over two hundred dollars to send me a SMS picture message of my lease. As tho it is my fault she kept all my documentation. From there it got worse. Not wanting to hear me she continued to advise me that our time in court is only 30 minutes, she expressed she felt I would fold under pressure! On and On she went NOT listening another $300.00 gone. At the courthouse she arranged a deal without the other sides permission coming at us we accepted the deal. She went to their lawyer then came back saying "They don't accept the deal". What? It is their own deal. Railroading another deal that we expressed NO to. She did not take us to trial. Yet at this point $1100.00 was gone and how did I know this? Carlson kept using terms "I don't know where we are in the fee" "We haven't used all the fee" " You will get some money back: since we didn't go to trial". What exactly is the remainder? Hesitate to disclose this as it "is calculated at months end" I got an e-mail next day stating we were at $1100.00. I replied shocked and expressed I felt as though I was being robbed. Quickly Carlson met us in court to withdraw from the case and leave us in dire state of chaos. In the end our habitability issue was never litigated and due to the misrepresentation of Jill Carlson and the outcome of the case I am left in a hopeless financial bind. Suicide was considered as an only option due to the nature of blatant UN just abuse we endured in the three & one half hour trial (3 1/2 hours a far cry from 30 minutes Jill Carlson) faced without an attorney, I would never do that to anyone I pledge to assist. Looking for a competent attorney? I recommend Anybody But........Jill Carlson.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
