In mid 2015 I hired Mr. Tameler to help with some legal issues I was having. When I initially met with Mr. Tameler he told me that he would help me with my case and gave me a flat fee of $2000.00. I had met with other attorneys that had told me I would have to pay a retainer of $3500.00 before they would even see me, so Mr. Tamelers $2000.00 was welcomed. My case just finished and I couldn't be happier with the outcome. Mr. Tameler got all my charges dismissed. I never had any issues contacting him, or asking his advice about court. Thank you very much!! I would tell anyone to go to him. He is the best!

We hired her to take over a two year old case that seemed to be hopeless from what we were being told. In just a few months she has completely turned things around. It's nowhere near over yet but I can promise you if the outcome is not a win it will not be from lack of work and dedication on her part. She went straight to work and has not let up.

John Briggs was asign to my case by the county, to be my pubic defender. I heard, he was the best & after almost a year of working with him; I can see he was. But of course public defenders work for free, as far as I know. I wanted to give the guy some money, to show my appreciation & for he's hard work but being 19 & a shy invert kid. I didnt have good communication skills, & never gave him my little 600.00 bucks I earned that summer. After a brief talk one evening with Mr.Briggs, of all he's work that year, it felt like he was asking for money. Being a nervous wreck & looking @ 16-32 years to life, I didn't think straight to gave him the money then. Well he took it personal; I believe..... & a day before trail, John Briggs coerced me to taking a plea deal. Mr. Briggs said "it's better to take one Felony, instead of 2 Felonies." I was in total shock, because it was an easy case & he even said we were going to beat it,we had ALL the EVIDENCE looking GOOD on my behave. I told him, what about what he had said before, about beating the case. But John gave me the dirtiest look & after seven minutes of thinking about it, I thought John Briggs was gonna screw me in the middle of trail, so I took the plea deal; which was engaging in a riot w/ a deadly weapon. Everyone in the courtroom was shocked, in the out come. Judge Joe Maus , said 2 years seems to low for you; I'm giving You 3 years Community corrections(The Villa). Then he slams He's mallet & it was over. Before anyone left the court room, Judge Joe Maus looks over & said ,"You should of just taken it to court; You'll would of beat it with SELF DEFENSE. " 3 weeks later or so , I was in the half way house, seeking @ least help for my alcoholism; but seeing that all the halfway house wanted was money & stressed very hard on it. I revoked myself & headed to prison, after just 3 months. Why did I do that? Because it was cheaper, & I would only do 18 months & the rest parole @ home. I played the system to save me money, & to get home faster. My heart does go out to the innocent people that go to prison, on wack charges because sometimes they end up getting more years in there, just because of the politics in prison. John Briggs is one of the best, but with a dark heart like that, I could of just used the SUCKIEST public defender there;& still beat my case. Your better off trying to represent YOURSELF, then GIVE YOUR LIFE OVER to THIS GUY.

Where do begin, I worked with Russell for over a year when he was at Ring & Associates in Fort Collins Colorado. This was for a car accident. Over the course of an entire year Russell didn't get anything done in my case. He had over 50 different times in which he failed to respond. He put in lackluster effort which reflected in my settlement amount. He never pushed to get more money in my pocket and It took and entire year to reach a settlement. The same exact deal that was presented in the beginning of the process. The only reason I accepted is because I was tired of dealing with his effort. Miss phone calls, missed emails, wouldn't give me updates for months on end. It was very sad to see how little he cared about me as a client. To put the cherry on top, he accepted the settlement in a frozen account left the firm and didn't bother to tell me. The only reason I ever knew is because I emailed 5 separate times to get a response. He finally responded with "Sorry I no longer work there" So he essential took a year to send a settlement that never changed and accepted it into a frozen account. Appreciate all the hard work you did for me. I highly recommend to any future potential clients to not use Russell, he does not care about his clients.

Our 16 yr old son got into trouble for theft. Turned out he committed 3 felonies. We were, of course, terrified with the prospects of the ramifications for our son. Upon recommendations we contacted Mike. He was immediately available to me on the phone, explained the process to me and was kind enough to ease my mind considerably. He spent a good 15 minutes with me on the phone although I my son was not even yet his client. I have not lost another night's sleep over it. Mike was always available to me. More often than not when I called and spoke to his Paralegal, Lisa, she would either put me through to him immediately or he would call me back promptly. He was available caring and extremely capable throughout the whole procedure. Thank God my son got out of it on Probation and community service, without a record and his future prospects not in ruins because of the stupid decisions of a teenager. You would be doing your child a great service by getting Mike on board with you. I will give him 5 stars only because they don't go up to 100

I hired Mr. Liggett under the impression that I would have an attorney who could stand up to the antics of the aggressive and unreasonable attorney of my ex-spouse, and that he would pay attention to detail and keep me from harm. This was not the case. After convincing me to settle for a ridiculously high monthly maintenance payment and to give up a large portion of my retirement, Mr. Liggett didn't submit paperwork in a timely manner for a QDRO, after which my ex and her attorney filed frivolous, (in my view), contempt of court charges. After putting me off for months, and telling me that we're not in contempt, Mr. Liggett let the case go to court, where he finally suggested settling. When I questioned this, Mr. Liggett threatened to walk out on me during our meeting before the hearing. This behavior was unacceptable, especially since we could have settled months earlier and saved me time, angst, and money. In addition Mr. Liggett overlooked loopholes in my stipulation that left my name on the mortgage of the home awarded to my ex spouse. She failed to pay her mortgage and damaged my credit to the point that I can't qualify for a credit card. After calling him and emailing him several times over several weeks about rectifying this problem with no response, I ended our relationship. Mr. Liggett gave reason in his formal notice of withdrawal as my counsel that "Irreconcilable differences exist between petitioner and counsel." Had he simply called me to let me know what these differences are, I would have listened. Yet he chose not to do this, and I truly feel it was because he was intimidated by the ex's attorney. I can see where Mr. Liggett might be decent if the other side is reasonable. However, if your case is contentious and you need someone to really fight for you, I'd recommend going elsewhere.

I recently had the pleasure of having Sara Steele represent me as my Public Defender. Miss Steele worked hard to protect my interests. Amy is currently helping me litigate against A large retailer and has helped my wife in the past with litigation against a pizza delivery worker who t-boned us years ago. I know of no other lawyer who would go through what she's been through with me. She is so responsive, generous, caring and trustworthy. She has helped me tremendously and has been a true friend throughout this ordeal. While she is still learning about Workers Comp cases she is not afraid of the big boys or to ask colleagues for advice or to school herself on the issues. What a tremendous job se has done for me and my family. She helped me get my job back, to win compensability in what seemed like a hopeless case, and we're still fighting. She is tenacious, doesn't give up and her background outside of Workers Comp in other areas of practice proved invaluable in my situation. I have recommended her to several friends and co-workers and she has successfully litigated on their behalf, winning two that I have sent her way and working on two others beside mine. Through my case and others she has become a local expert in dealing with Wal-Mart and standing up to their tactics. I highly recommend her services should you need to stand up to this Goliath. Thank you Amy for all you have done and are still doing. Whatever happens I will be eternally grateful for you! Pastor Joe Senior Pastor, Mile High Bible Institute

Amanda was appointed by the court to represent me. She failed at even the most basic tasks. One of her motions was so filled with spelling errors that it was barely understandable. She was very disorganized, it took more than 5 meetings for her to remember to bring one key document which made things take forever. Two weeks before trial, after her having 8 months to prepare and an investigator to assist her, she revealed that she was so unprepared for court that I would have to suffer 6 more months of anxiety about the case while she continued to prepare. I wound up taking a plea deal for something I didn't do just to be able to get on with my life. Don't waste your time, hire a real lawyer instead.

Hiring Jack was the best thing I did for myself! He knows his stuff and he knows Grand County! when we met up in person he made sure I understood what was going on in my case. It was a huge breath of fresh air! Before I hired Jack, I was considering hiring a lawyer out of Denver. I thought I needed a big shot lawyer from Denver to handle my case. After the Denver lawyer informed me of his $25,000.00 retainer, I called Jack for a second opinion. He handled my case for a fourth of that cost and basically got me off in a matter of a couple months! So glad I went with a local lawyer Who knows his stuff! Thanks Jack!

Guess Mr Talbot or his assistants thought my very dire situation was not worthy of their attention. This is an emergency situation but I guess only for a deeply worried/concerned grandmother. I read other reviews mentioning negative experiences with Ted, particularly noting his rudeness and self-importance during introductory conversations. Initially, I didn't think this was enough to judge him by, but my experience confirmed their sentiments. During our introductory call, I was appalled by Ted's attitude and disrespect towards other attorneys. He dominated the conversation, leaving me no opportunity to speak. Instead of discussing my case, he insisted on "telling me" how things would be, which felt overbearing and dismissive. Ted's approach was self-gratifying and belittling, showing no humility or understanding that clients are paying for his service. It's astonishing to encounter an attorney who lacks basic respect and empathy for his clients. Ted's behavior is unacceptable for someone in a service-oriented profession.

I have no experience with this attorney, other than the consultation. He may be great in court, but his social skills on the phone were subpar. He did not listen well, rushing to get it over with and often interrupting stating that I was off topic or jumping around, when I was not. He did not listen to facts that I had hoped to share then left me with an over-simplified conclusion. He was also quite unmodest about his credentials, stating that he was perhaps the most experienced attorney on the site and that all of his reviews were positive. I can't state this for certain, but I question the validity of the reviews, which are nearly all 5 stars. One reason I question this is that he quoted me $300 per hour with a $5000 retainer, which differs from the posted $250 and $2500 retainer posted on the site.

Ted was invaluable with helping me through my divorce. My ex is a bully, manipulative, narcissistic and very difficult to deal with. Mediation was completely out of the question, although I really believed it possible at one point. If you are going into a contentious divorce with kids and/or assets, Ted is the man to have in your corner. He was aggressive when necessary, totally on top of the deadlines, the legalities and very responsive when I had yet another problem from my husband. His billing was transparent and easy to understand. One suggestion I would make with any legal situation, listen to your attorney, don't kid yourself about anything, be truthful and be very cooperative when it comes to the courts. I can't say enough good things about Ted. And I am thankfully divorced. I had to go trial because my ex husband just refused to work with me on any level. He refused to leave the house and took every opportunity to make the divorce harder on our kids, more expensive and time consuming. When you are putting the next 10+ years in the hands of a judge who has to put the needs your kids first and foremost, and it costing a fortune, it is worth it to have Ted Shih as your lawyer.

I am currently being represented by Nancy Holton. My case has been set for trial in a few months. She has met with me one time in 15 months and she never returns my phone calls. She has pressured me to take a deal that was put on the table before I even plead "Guilty or Not Guilty." She has filed one motion on my behalf because I requested to see my discovery and that was 11 months after she became my court appointed attorney. I have still not seen the discovery. The one time that we met she told me that it was way too many pages to buy but she will go through it and take out the pages I don't need. I can pick it up that same day from the front desk. I still have not seen it. It never made it to the front desk or in to my hands. The charge that I am facing a is a felony but I have been offered a misdemeanor charge if I take the deal and the prosecutor has offered me no jail time. I am moving forward with this because I am not guilty and my attorney has no idea where we are in the case each time were in court. I have to remind her of what had happened in the last court hearing. There are extenuating circumstances where the police involved violated at least 3 constitutional rights and my attorney is playing dumb. I am set for trial and nothing towards my case has been gone over and at this point I am not sure what to do.

We hired Sherri to help us with getting an APR for my brother’s child who was in my care. Our case, not unlike others, had a fair amount of small details. I would sit down with Sherri and explain the situation or answer questions she asked, watch her take notes and then a few days or a week later, she would tell me she needed the same details we had already gone over and stated that I hadn’t given her yet. She often misspelled names or got a DOB wrong, even after being corrected and that still made it’s way into the final document. She sent an email at the conclusion of our case stating she would return the retainer and then a week later, she said there was nothing to return (she would bill when the retainer had run low, so it felt as though she had intentionally found enough to charge to keep the entire retainer). After consulting with an attorney who mainly works on custody/adoption, we’ve found our APR is boardline illegal based on the way it’s been written. Overall, Sherri seemed polite and professional, but in regards to our case, she felt scatterbrained, spread too thin and not well versed in family law. I respect her as a person but would not hire her as an attorney again.

Ms Murgallis made repeated mistakes that cost me several thousand dollars. She was incapable of even getting the basic court ordered documents, despite repeatedly telling me she could. She then made sure there were no consequences to the opposing party for not turning them over. She refused to present evidence of serious legal infractions of the opposing party. Undermining my argument and strengthening that of the opposing party. She made sure that the case cost as much as possible to the point that I had to send her an email telling her to stop wasting her time and my money until she got the documents she said she would be able to obtain. You will need to know the laws so that when you try to stand up for your rights she won't be able to force you into a bad situation.

He sat in on a mediation with me and talked to my sister the entire time about her living in New York and then turned around and tried to charge me thousands of dollars for it. As far as having an Attorney, I should have just paid his paralegal Deb. She was the one I talked to, explained things to me and looked things up. Not only did Larsen cause me to lose my children, but he didn't even know what he was defending me for. Then didn't even care enough to fix it. When he decided to withdraw from my case, his paralegal Deb told me a month after he already had, and he didn't even bother to call, then I had a court date I didn't even find out about till 4 days before. I personally think that since it was HIS mistake that caused my ex to take my children then it should be his responsibility to fix it. However I have gotten a different Attorney and if I were you, I wouldn't hire a Attorney with no sense of responsibility.

He was somewhat knowledgeable... when we could get a hold of him. But that was one of the large problems - he always seemed preoccupied with something/someone else!!!!!

It is such a shame to see a brand new mom being charged with a felony. She sleeps with her child on the first night home and instead of showing empathy, you charge her? Do you not think she is punishing herself every second for this accident? What is happening to this world? Anyone involved in this should really take a hard look at themselves. Shameful.

The district attorney refused to take a clear fraud case. A babysitter steals a check and writes herself a $1000 check forges a signature and the DA sees no clear case ??!?!!? That’s ridiculous. I’m no law expert but I think starting with forgery and larceny charges is a good place.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
