I hired Tim Stoesz to represent me in my divorce case. That was a big mistake which costs me a lot. This lawyer starts avoiding me right after I paid the retainer. He won't return calls or emails. Expect huge delays and much frustration while dealing with him. When you confront him with facts, he becomes irritated easily and acts rudely. His reasoning for avoiding his clients is to keep the costs down, which is not true. Regardless, he will know little about your case and you will loose big throughout the process. If you need true representation I suggest that you find someone else. Good luck!

Little effort and bad legal advice. Printed up a terrible plea agreement that did not fit the crime. Also had misinformed me of what was owed to him trying to get more money than what was previously agreed upon.

First off he visited me once when I was in Madison county jail and that was to tell me that my mother hired me. I was in jail for 4 months and finally when I went to court he had no strategy to defend me, he looked like he just woke up coming into the court room. He wanted me to sign a plea agreement for 6 months work release. That’s what the prosecution wanted. Even though I had been sitting in jail longer than I should have because the Judge who was originally in charge of my case was Angela sims but she was my attorney for the original case against me so it was conflict of interest. The judge disagreed with the prosecution because I had sat so long in jail already for violating probation which I was on for a D felony and Violated with a class a misdemeanor driving without a license. The judge released me. Once I got out of jail Mr. Baylor insisted I come see him about my case in Hamilton County. When My girlfriend and I walked into his office he was just spinning around in his chair like a child. He was just saying things that were very unprofessional and didn’t make any sense towards my case and he smelled of booze. This guy simply shouldn’t be aloud to be an attorney period.

If you value your life and freedom don’t even bother contacting him. He will not fight for you. He can’t even speak a clear sentence while in court. He won’t return calls in a timely manner.

I hired Jonathan Howes to represent me in my divorce. Once in the courtroom the opposing Attorney accused me of battery, intimidation and anything else that he could use get the judge to fell sorry for my Ex wife. None of this was true and Jonathon presented no intelligent defense. The opposing attorney even had my ex-wife's daughter in=law testify that I told her son that I hit his mother during our final argument. Now if I am a Indiana state trooper and you said that you hit my mom, guess what? your going to jail. However I did not go to jail, I did not hit her and I never said that I did. And again no intelligent defense by Howes. My ex-wife and her attorney committed 46 counts of perjury. The Judge accepted the deal or agreement written by the opposing attorney. The agreement called for me to seek family counseling at a business that no longer offered any family counseling. Again no intelligent arguments from Jonathan Howe. So the end result was that I lost total visitation with my daughter and I have to pay child support based on a 58 hour work week. Every week. I certainly would not recommend Jonathon Howes for anything more than a parking ticket

He never did anything after he was hired for my husbands case…Never filed any motions to dismiss charges or to drop the no contact order. The only thing he did right was resign from the case because of conflict of interest after a year of doing absolutely nothing he finally realized it was conflict of interest because my husband wouldn’t take the plea they wanted him to take! Do not hire him and I feel sorry for you if you get him as a public defender in Pulaski county! He works for the county not for the person who hired him!

We used Attorney G.Allen Lidy for a child support modification hearing. I would not recommend using Allen Lidy. He acted as if he did not care about my case, instead he did the bare minimum required. He did not stand up for my interests during our hearing and he did not return e-mails or phone calls in a timely manner. Use at your own risk. We found another attorney and have been very pleased with her. *Disclaimer* The views and opinions expressed here are solely those of the original author. These views and opinions do not necessarily represent other clients who may have used G. Allen Lidy with success. My negative review is strictly an opinion based on my own personal experience.

After hiring Mr. Payne to represent me in my divorce case, I immediately had the feeling that he didn't care much about the case other than to just "get it done and over with". I have worked with many attorney's in the past due to my career, but none as eager to just roll over and play dead as Mr. Payne was. He seemed less than knowledgeable when I asked questions and was somewhat pushy to get me to agree to things I would have rather not agreed to. I also found out later (after it was too late) that he mis-advised me on several issues which have since caused me great financial struggle. After the finalization of my divorce, I hired a different attorney for a custody case. After doing so, my new attorney requested my complete file from Mr. Payne. In doing so, we found that he had never followed through with his duties to collect specific forms before the divorce from my now, ex-husband. These were itemized charges on his bill that I paid, that were obviously never done. I would not recommend his services to anyone, unless you have a super easy case and want the affordable option to just "get it done with".

Hired as a divorce attorney, he was totally pre-occupied with himself running for circut judge. he failed me in many ways such as, not do anything i requested; like issue of subpoena's. He never returned my original documents and paperwork. I even believe he collaborated with my ex's attorney. The "Good Ol Boy's Club". He did NOTHING for me i could not have done myself. I only received 1/2 of the value of my home (which i would have received anyway) In addition, he agreed to holding a Mediation outside of the county i resided and the county he had his office. None of this was ever explained to me and i was bulldosed out of town. Horrible outcome that will forever affect my financial future Do not hire !

Judge Randy Williams is a loose cannon. If you are scheduled to go in front of him, you better hope he is having a good day. One bad instance throughout the day and he will take it out on anyone that goes in front of him after. He tried to drop out of his campaign for reelection but didnt do it in time. He said he was going to step down, that was about 4 years ago. He will tell you something will only take a few days, then take months to do it. I wish I had good things to say about Judge Williams, he has been fair to me in my dealings with him. But it is definitely time for him to step down.

Thomas O’Brien is unprofessional and does not fight for client or even law and constitutional rights. He didn’t want to show discovery body cam so reacted erratically when showed up to view it. Fired face to face in office for many reasons, untruthful, overpayment- paid extra to not push back dates and fight with law to get dismissed and instead delayed several times and would not submit any motions, foul language when asked any questions and rude during any conversation, and so many other wrong doings. As a retired military member of over 20 years (hired for a family member), recommend you do not hire this attorney!

I had Mr. Baugh represent me in several cases. I discontinued representation after he appeared in court completely unprepared for one case, and his preparation for a more important matter was insignificant. He did not make a credible attempt to present my children's interests. At the time, he was more absorbed in his personal affairs and just cared about his fees which he billed regardless of his efforts and effectiveness.

Used her in a child support case, was most times unprepared, never brought the things she said she would in court. Basically either called me or texted me constantly to use up my retainer. Ended up with a 3500 bill for things I could have done on my own. Very ill informed! Don’t waste your money! You’ve been warned.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
