The Jackson County prosecutor, Attorney Jeffrey Chalfant, has failed to file charges against The Veterinarian Blood Bank after receiving conclusive information from the Peta organization. Evidence included signed eyewitness signed statement, video and audio recordings with TVBB staff and vet records after two very neglected cats were rescued from there. Why isn't this prosecutor doing his job? Perhaps a replacement is in order?

He represented me back in 2000. I was accused of stalking a woman I was engaged to. This woman failed to tell police we had reconcyled are differentses and had indeed made planes to be married. For an unknown reason benounces to me she made it look as though I had never giving up on a failed relationship an was able to lead law enforcemen to believe that I was stalking her Mr. Dabroski quickly found evidence that she did indeed lie to police an my case was egsonarated by a judge in a court of law. Hats off to this man.

Ms. Keefe represents everything you DO NOT WANT IN YOUR ATTORNEY. She is slow, disorganized, negligent and above all she is INCOMPETENT. If she had the goal of intentionally sabotaging my case, she would not have been able to do a better job. She made so many mistakes and overlooked so many important case-altering details. Seeing her performance in the courtroom, where she came completely unprepared, I was forced to settle on unfavorable terms due to the complete absence of Ms. Keefe’s help and support despite having paid her legal fees in full. A few months later I went to see her with a list of her mistakes and overlooked details. I believed she owed me an explanation of why she failed me. I had to make up a reason for my visit (think billable hours!) as I could tell she did not want to see me. At that meeting, instead of owning up to her mistakes and negligence to which I had proof in my hand, Ms. Keefe came up with laughable ridiculous explanations, some of which were contradicting each other! Upon returning home, I received an email from her containing the following paragraph: "The reason I asked ahead of time what you wanted to discuss today was so that I could review my file before you got here, so that I could prepare and respond. Obviously, when you told me you wanted to ask about a modification of support, I did not review my file on the issues you raised today. It may take a while because of my schedule, but I will go back and refresh my recollection. Since you wanted to meet with me in person, I’m hoping you will do me the same service if I ask to meet you in person. But I won’t mislead you on my purpose. I will be in touch in the next few months." This email was sent to me ONE YEAR AGO, on October 6, 2019. Since then I have made numerous attempts to get in touch with Ms. Keefe but she ignores my attempts and does not communicate with me. I am still open to hear her out. If she meets with me as promised, I will revise my review. If she provides me with a reasonable explanation of why she failed my case, I will publish an apology to her. However, if this review is still up, then one should think why an attorney would lie and make a promise she does not intend to keep; why an attorney would hide from her long term client and risk having this review up if her conscience is clear?! Think about that before hiring her - do you really want to have an attorney who lacks not only competence but also integrity, honesty and decency? Ms. Keefe, if my claims are wrong, if you did not fail me, if you did not make mistakes, if you did not overlook important details, you have the power to get this review down and have me apologize to you by just proving me wrong. Why don't you take that chance?! Have some integrity, keep your promise and answer my questions. That’s the least you could do after failing my case. You failed as an attorney. Don't fail as a human being.

Hiring Ms. Keefe, from the Law Office of Maureen T. Keefe, was the biggest mistake of my life. She let me down in every possible way. Her work ethic was slow, inefficient, sloppy, disorganized, unethical and dishonest. Due to the long drawn out nature of my case, Ms. Keefe had ample time to look over every aspect of documentation that was made available to her but she failed to study any of these documents. She made so many mistakes. For example, she sent an agreement that was missing the most crucial part to the opposing party to be SIGNED. When I confronted her about this missing paragraph, she simply replied "it was a draft". A draft does not go on for signature. The missing vital component to the opposing party was a gross oversight that could have resulted in an even greater financial loss for my case. I cannot believe that an attorney that has been practicing law for 32 years could be so careless and irresponsible. She continued to overcharge me based on our initial contract and agreed upon rate. When I voiced my concerns to her on these overcharges, her response was that “if the judge orders the other party to pay the most of [your] legal expenses then it [the overcharge] won't hurt you”. Who pays Ms. Keefe’s fee should not dictate how much in overcharges Ms. Keefe invoices for, nor should this be her legal advice when confronted on addressing a discrepancy in a contracted rate. After my case was settled, I went to speak with her on my concerns on her lack of professionalism and how it hindered the outcome of my case. Her only explanation was that the final hearing went badly because "it was all political - the judge is democrat and I am republican" and "the judge is a friend of the opposing counsel". I did not inquire about why the final hearing ended in a negative outcome. My inquiry was why Ms. Keefe made so many mistakes. I have documentation that proves Ms. Keefe’s poor judgement and ill work ethic, all of which cannot be explained by someone’s political affiliation. At the end of our meeting to discuss her lack in judgement, she asked to be given time to review her notes and that she would get back to me with answers. To date, I have tried multiple attempts to reach Ms. Keefe, after providing a months’ worth of time to review my case. She is no longer answering my attempts to meet again to discuss my case. I feel that Ms. Keefe is intentionally ignoring me and does not plan to discuss my case any further. I find this to be completely unprofessional and feel that Ms. Keefe was simply using my case as a means of making a profit for herself only.

Maureen Keefe is an awesome Attorney. Maureen meets all the qualities that you would want from an Attorney representing you. She was my crimminal court Attorney. She knows all the ends and outs of the justice system. She also takes the time out to go with you to presentencing. She has loyalty and respect for you as a client and person. She has great experience representing people with a mental illness. Alot of Attorneys don't have experience in that area of the courts. She really works hard to make sure her client " DOESN'T GET SCREWED" by anyone. She makes sure you get the help that you need while you are trying to help yourself get well. You also gain a friend for life. Her faith is very strong! She doesn't tell you things that you want to hear. Very straight forward Attorney. She has common sense, very smart, and she's a very strong woman. Don't get in her way!

I hired this attorney under the assumption he was another reputable attorney with a similar name. His office staff mislead me, and once I paid my retainer and realized it was not the attorney I thought I hired, they refused to refund. He was late to my hearings, and disheveled and unprofessional. I was dragged out too long with no answered calls, etc. Be cautious. I then hired the appropriate attorney and my case was handled professionally and in a timely manner.

Initial consultation was promising. Once money was involved, I never heard from him again. I tried asking questions with no answer. Asked for him to withdraw from the case and refund my remaining retainer of 800 or so. Was told there was no retainer left and I had no bills from him explaining where the money went. Awful awful experience, and all he did was take a couple thousand dollars from me.

Giving Jane 2 stars as she has the potential to be a good lawyer however when she represented me in 2022 as a Keffer-Hirschauer attorney I was disappointed on many occasions . Jane completed a lot of work last minute, which might have been the result of Keffer-Hirschauer overloading their attorneys with too many cases. Regarding spousal maintenance, Jane wasted months before asking the court for a hearing on spousal maintenance, and Jane did not follow through with the request once filed. Jane recommended signing certain financial agreements without communicating the possibility that future hearing dates may be rescheduled or extended, which lead to me being left without funding for many months. Lastly, a few weeks before a scheduled mediation and final hearing date Jane was either fired from Keffer-Hirschauer or left Keffer-Hirschauer on her own, (I have not been given a reason for her departure from either side) which then extended my mediation and final hearing, left me in a desperate financial situation and resulted in an exorbitant amount of legal fee's as I had to start over with a new lawyer.

I paid him 8000 dollars for a case with dcs he told me I had a law suit and he was filing paperwork. He never filed paperwork for lawsuit. I am the one that fought in court for my daughter not him I got my daughter back and my case closed out. I asked repeatedly about the lawsuit because he said there was a statue of limitations on it but he never filed so I kept contacting his paralegal about what was going on with my lawsuit or the return of some of my money and he just kept putting me off and never returning my calls then today I receive a paper from the courts saying he removed himself from my case. He is stealing from the poor people to make himself rich it's not fair he is not a professional he is all talk and no show I would not recommend him to anyone and anyone that reads this we should all come together and get rid of his law firm all together. Me and my fiancé hired Rolin for my son. He doesn’t think we lost but after court, it was pretty devastating. He didn’t ask the questions he was supposed to so the judge would know what was going on. He was late then when I called his secretary looking for him, she said he just pulled up and he just let her know the judge was going to be late. I said I feel like he should be in here letting us know but instead he was in his truck playing games on his phone, when he finally came in, he only briefed us for five minutes. He didn’t ask the right questions. My son did not know what to say so the judge didn’t feel like it was imperative they not live in the Homeless Shelter. With his jobless mother. We finally get done. I’ll let him know how to Sleeze that we are with the results. He said we are going to get a final bill, but he would zero that out because it was not our fault that the judge was late today. I get a call from him, letting me know That he’s not happy on how I spoke to the paralegal on how to please I am with everything that he did we paid him $2500 and we never met with him in person. Talk to him twice on the phone and we were lucky if the paralegal answered an email , so he said since he’s not gonna go by his word, he’s gonna go by the contract and charge us the additional $633 do not use him

Ambulance chaser, only looking for quick settlement. Exactly what it says. He will drag your case on for years and literally do nothing but file extensions and very little work. He will settle for nothing just to move on from your case to the next. He's a turn and burn lawyer. When you go to consult with him he's going to promise you anything to get your case. I soon got very frustrated after years and had to fire Walter Alvarez and hire an actual attorney who was actually educated enough to take my case. Do not go to trail with them. They are never prepared for anything and will ask you the same questions over and over because they can't ever remember anything. Please for the sake of yourself please stay away and don't go through the hardship I did. Everything listed here is my opinion.

So at first it seemed like everything was gonna be great. I have since been turned over turned over to another "attorney", still in school who seems to not have much experience as well as lied to me several times. I also did the majority of the foot work, as they stood by telling and assuring me that getting me a plea agreement was the best option. I did my own research and told the other attorney how we were gonna proceed with the case. Needless to say I got my own charges dropped. This office is a fricking joke.

I had hired Mr. Alvarez for a case that was very difficult for me personally and he had initially made me several promises. In the initial meeting he put on a very convincing act that had me believing he was going to work hard for me. After I signed the agreement, no work was done on my case for YEARS. I never got any of my phone calls returned and after four years of waiting, I ended up with a lower settlement than I was offered before I even hired Mr. Alvarez. DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY.

Heather Perkins was my court appointed lawyer. She would never call me back, the only time we talked about my case with me was 5 mins before court, where she proceeded to call me a liar and scare me into signing a plea agreement for a case that she could have easily won since the opposing party didn't even show. Heather Perkins threw me under the bus so the state would have their conviction. She felt more sympathy for the state than she did for her own client. she used to in fact b prosecutor so that explains why she was trying to act like one by throwing her clients threw the wood chipper and scaring them all into signing their own conviction. If this woman is elected judge this type of behavior would continue but at a higher level, injustice convictions for all guilty and innocent.

I hired Ms. Wilson for a PO hearing against my abusive (then) husband, which later turned into a divorce. I was the one paying her, yet she seemed to be on HIS side! For example, when he violated the PO, she insisted I could NOT call the police. She never ordered discovery, insisting that we had more debt than assets, so to sign a paper giving everything to him and accept $500 per month for 3 years only. I am 55, disabled, and unable to work; how could I survive on that? I fired her and my new attorneys immediately ordered discovery, finding over 1.5 million in assets. She did much more against me, such as accepting court orders on my behalf without my prior approval or knowledge, accepting things I did not want to accept on my behalf. I am not happy with how she did NOT represent me to MY best interests but instead to my ex's. When I spoke with her after the divorce was final, I asked her why she never ordered discovery. She told me that she doesn't order discovery until after mediation. How can you divide the assets in mediation when you don't know what assets are present? She later refused to refund the money I had paid her. If I had not fired her, I would now be disabled, homeless, and living in my car with little money while my ex walked away with nearly 1.6 million in assets. I absolutely do NOT recommend this attorney.

Also is never on time. And does not communicate with you very well. Because he didn't communicate with me right I ended up having a warrant twice and going to jail for a failure to appear. all because he wouldn't communicate with me and tell me that he rescheduled my court dates I guess he thought I was supposed to know on my own, but that's his job to let me know when he does something for me.

Not the best lawyer. I was referred to him through my employee assistance help line. He was retained for a paternity case and a restraining order against the biological father of my child. He did not copy me on any correspondence that he sent to the opposing counsel regarding my case, so I cannot be confident that that correspondence took place. He made agreements, on my behalf, with the opposing counsel, and did not fully explain it to me. So unbeknownst to me, I had agreed to these items in court. God willing, I had decided to educate myself on all of the issues that I was facing in court, yet when I questioned him about anything, he became short with me and cut me off and treated my case as if were a "cookie cutter" case. Finally, my gut told me that I needed to find and retain a lawyer that would hear my story and reasons why I had concerns for my child's wellbeing, and I was blessed to obtain other counsel that has done just that. While it can be perceived that the courts have and are continuing to work in my favor, that is only because I have such a great case with much evidence that the opposing party does not have much of a leg to stand on. Currently, I was "low balked" with "temporary" child support, yet the court document states that this was done "in accordance with the child support guidelines" and further explains that the worksheet was attached. I never saw that worksheet. I would not recommend him to represent you in a family law case, unless you want the wool pulled over your eyes.

Scott A. Adams represented me in 2014. He was completely unprepared for Court and lost virtually every argument. He was rebuked by the Judge for his behavior in Court and did not even call me by my correct name. After the hearing he refused to speak with me and I had to get a copy of the final ruling from my ex-wife. He ignored almost 100 points of contact from me in the six weeks after the trial. He finally emailed me the day after I contacted the Hamilton County Courthouse, I have not heard form him since. If you need counsel, please find a qualified lawyer, NOT Scott A. Adams.

This lawyer ran off with me money. He was supposed to return the rest on my money from my bond slip. Instead of taking what was owed to him, he took all my money. He still owes me $4,300 and he will not fight your case to the best of his abilities.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
