I should start with the fact that after multiple failed attempts at trying to communicate our first meeting was her video tuned into a hearing on Vacation. I kid you not, palm trees and all. The lack of care was evident from the start. Then booking a phone call two months out only to be disrespectful and rude. To have someone with this demeanor practicing law is outrageous. Any review won’t change her status with the board, but if anyone who is possibly thinking about using her for any capacity can see this and change their mind then it was worth it. Robin is rude, crass, impatient, disrespectful and makes you feel with every word that she would have never voluntarily picked to represent you. Very fitting for Robin to be the representation provided to the people of Evansville. A vile person who should not be in people facing position. You can always tell when someone hates their life outside of work, but that shouldn’t effect the people you choose to work for.

A lawyer is supposed to up hold the law and he does not! Between many no shows and no calls my friend lost his case.. Maybe if wasn't in a relationship with someone who knew of an adult sleeping with a minor he would stand for laws to be set straight.

Mr. Hancock was hired and paid in full to defend my husband in a criminal case. Their first meeting was in a parking lot....what?! Husband has since been to court three times. This lawyer hasn't shown one time. He also will not answer his phone or return calls. In my opinion Mr. Hancock should face criminal charges...he was paid in full to defend a client, then a no show. This to me is theft. Also, when we are a no show in court, they put a warrant out for us. The same should apply to everyone whether you are the lawyer or the defendant. This is ludicrous. My husband is not his only victim. There are more. I just don't understand how an attorney can just do this to people with no consequences whatsoever.

If you or your loved one's freedom is on the line, DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! About 10 years ago, I was referred to Mr. Hancock by another attorney to represent my husband due to his cases location being in KY (he is licensed to practice in both states). He kept communication lines open, displayed a respectable and strong presence in the courtroom, treated my husband with respect and fought for him while also working with me, allowing us to make payments. With that said, it was for all these reasons that we contacted Mr. Hancock a few weeks ago in hopes of retaining him for my husband's defense counsel in regards to a more recent matter. Mr. Hancock, again agreed to represent my husband and stated that we could make payments but that he would need a deposit of $1k, which we agreed to. It took us a few days but we were able to procure the funds and once we did, we made NUMEROUS calls to both numbers that are publicly listed for Me. Hancock over the next few days, leaving voicemails that we had the down payment plus some. After leaving MULTIPLE messages with no response, I then proceeded to text Mr. Hancock a slew of messages (all of which were completely respectful in nature), asking for any response, at this point, even if he had, for some reason, decided not to take the case. Nothing and he had been informed and was knowledgeable about the urgency due to his court date being only a couple days away. I understand that things happen and situations arise that are personal and even emergencies in some instances but to this day, we have yet to hear from him. SO AGAIN I REPEAT, DO NOT WASTE YOUR HARD EARNED MONEY ON THIS MAN-- HE HAS SHOWN NO RESPECT OR EMPATHY OR REGARDS FOR US AND FOR WHAT REASON? YOU DONT DO THAT TO SOMEONE...ESPECIALLY A FATHER OF 4 CHILDREN WHOSE FREEDOM IS AT STAKE, WHO HAS ALWAYS PAID ON TIME, BEEN RESPECTFUL, AND NEVER GIVEN ANY REASON FOR THIS BLATANT DISREGARD!!

I am a poor starving artist who really messed up to the point where I needed a lawyer to get me out of deep trouble a few years back. I mean it wasn't like criminal bad stuff. It was just me being drunk and outta control and doing some really stupid stuff and I got caught! But like no one would take my case and they was all too expensive anyways. Then I found Kevin and he took my case right away. And he was so much cheaper then the other guys too. In conclusion if you think you don't have money for a lawyer then think again and call Kevin Willis. Oh, he did not get me off the hook but he tried lots of crazy ways to do it and the judge did not throw the book at me either. So if you don't have much money and you messed up, and no lawyer wants to take your case, I am telling you that Kevin is your guy.

I hired Kevin to help represent me and my partner in two separate but related issues. Altogether we were doing business with him for a little over a year. I spoke to and had consultations with several other lawyers before choosing Kevin. In the one case, he helped drastically mitigate damages we knew we were facing in a small claims suit filed against us. We were never going to win but the costs were made manageable. In the separate case, we ended up settling for an amount in our favor that made this whole nightmare of a situation a win for all of us overall. He was professional and courteous, even when faced with a bullish and condescending opposing counsel. At all points in the case, Kevin helped clarify the language and ensured I knew what was happening before it happened. He had opportunities to enrich himself further, but instead took the honorable and integrous path to his own detriment. He cared that the result was good for his client and not just himself. It's too easy to criticize someone, anonymously, over the internet, especially from a position where you may not understand or even be aware of applicable law. Any potential client should sit down with multiple lawyers and see how they communicate with you. Make sure that you choose the right personality to represent your position. If you don't know how to communicate effectively with your lawyer about what your hopes/expectations are at each stage, then you're bound to be disappointed, regardless of outcome. You will be happy with your choice in Kevin, as long as you understand that when it comes to litigation, no party gets exactly the outcome they want.

I used him in a criminal case. He did very well for my husband. Swanson got all the charges dropped and he was never convicted of anything. He told me what he could do and what might take some longer time to get done but let me know exactly what he could possibly do. He gave me his cell number to call in case he needed him after hours. There were times he did not answer but he did always call me back on the following business day or before. He does charge a good amount but it was worth every penny for my husband and I to be FREE of these criminal charges. I recommend him for criminal activity, he will let you know if he can help you or not during your consultation or shortly after.

Consulted with he and his assistant, Ms Carroll about a custody case. They took over 40 days to get back with me after the initial meeting, only to confirm information through what they called a p.i. that they sent out. I left custody paperwork that they asked to look over and if they could hold on to but then when i requested my paperwork back due to lack of communication that has been a totally unprofessional situation. Ms. Carroll emailed on Nov 2nd that she was mailing them back, now today after nearly 40 days, 2 more emails and several attempted phone calls................she informs me that it can be sent out COD with me having to pay the 10-15 dollar fee. Absolutely pathetic communication, lack of effort and the most unprofessional office i have dealt with in years. Don't know if it him or his staff but either way, it was a very disappointing situation.

Very unprofessional, lazy, and rude. Took him over a year to get my bankruptcy completed. Promised me one thing but did another. First time I spoke to him he said he was “adorably” real because I believed I was being conned. The whole time I had him it was anxiety and anger for his lack of listening, punctuality, and doing his job right. Even the courts saw something wrong and made him give me half my money back. Still have things left after bankruptcy and he refuses to contact me so I can figure how to fix this. This was his responsibility to help and I would not recommend him to anyone. He always made excuses rather than being a professional lawyer.

I’ve been fighting the case for seven years. I am very innocent. There is no proof and the so-called alleged victims have not ever showed up or want anything to do with it and my codefendant. Also let it be clear and loud to my attorney and his attorney that I have nothing to do with that situation and they’re still trying to lock me up And I am so innocent and My Public Defender Nicholas Barnes is allowing it to happen. I have a court date October 10, 2024 if I don’t get locked up then I guess he did his job if I do get locked up I suggest a whole bunch of bad reviews. Please look elsewhere unless you are desperate. We attempted to use Cordell Funk as our adoption attorney, and it was a terrible experience. Weeks between returned calls, needed to amend the document at least 6 times due to errors, and the secretary is incompetent (doesn't return calls, doesn't share information with attorney). Did I mention he didn't show up the day of our adoption? It wasn't in his calendar. We ended up spending more to go elsewhere. Save your money, time and sanity.

I hired this attorney years ago. There were court dates cancelled without my knowing. Court dates made that I was not contacted for (with the exception of one where I was notified at 5:30pm on the day before to tell me I had to appearat that point I had to scramble to get work off the next morning). Papers for the opposing party to be served where sent 2 days before the hearing in one circumstance to which the opposing party was not considered"notified" therefore they had to continue the hearing once again. There was able time to get the opposer served as the court date before was 2 months prior. One court date was supposed to be a hearing in front of the judge and when I took work off and appeared I was told that hearings are not on Fridays. They are on Thursdays. I told the office that the information keeps changing as to what I am being told is happening and what actually happens. I had waited on one letter to be sent to the opposing party for 2 months one time. I was told I can have the letter edited if I was not satisfied. I chose that option. I went through the letter with the front office and at the end of the discussion I asked them to read back to me what they had so far. They weren't even taking notes. I was the asked to edit the letter myself and they would sign it! They do not send monthly statements or the agreement made between the client and attorney on what the cost will be. The front desk ladies are rude and condescending as if asking for my file information is a burden. The front office has stopped responding to my inquiries after several months of asking why my last hearing was cancelled without my knowledge and making monthly payments. I was suggested to contact the Bar association with all my information. Elden seems to be polite and caring and I don't know if this is his doing or the office.

He missed a deadline to file for a hearing. I would not advice anyone to hire him. Without going into any details I will tell you that I was pleased with the outcome but I was not pleased with the way I had to find out about the outcome of my case. What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
