So far he's an excellent attorney. Spoke with him directly, he spent some time gathering. Info on my initial call himself. Scheduled in person consult within a week during that phone call. Left me with some research to complete to further my position. So far he is right to the point, gets things done; a roll up your sleeves and plow through it kinda lawyer. I like it and hope it stays this "full steam ahead".

Had a Exhibition of Speed ticket that was considered a "misdemeanor" and I did not take it seriously. I eventually came to conclusion that I needed to hire an attorney. Having Pablo being my first attorney was quite a good experience. He explained everything we had to do to accomplish what was best for me and how to get out of my ticket. He is good over phone and over email. The final outcome was that I got out of my ticket. I was so relieved and satisfied with my experience with Pablo. I would definitely recommend him in the future to others with common tickets such as mine. Thank you!

Attorney Fabian was so great I can't say enough to express our happiness. He and his office staff handled every aspect of our case with honest, personal, and professional service. We only had to meet with Attorney Fabian once and then everything else was handled over the phone or email. The price was very reasonable and he was able to get all charges dropped. The coolest thing is that they set up a private account that updates whenever anything changes. The whole experience was amazing!

I received a ticket while visiting in town due to my father having a stroke. My nephew told me to contact him as he has helped him before. I was impressed with the professionalism of the firm and the information that was given to me when I called. They made everything easy for me and I did not have to appear in court. Im happy to say that the ticket was dismissed and saved me a lot of money. I would recommend.

Daniel really saved our family in 2023, where we had a deposit dispute with our previous landlord. The outcome was satisfying, and the landlord returned our full deposit without us having to go through the small claim court. He helped us when there's no other attorney would, in a kind and knowledgeable way of explaining everything to us. Daniel always follow up with us during the process and respond in a timely manner. I highly recommend Daniel to anyone who's suffering the same or has any questions related tenant-landlord disputes.

Our case just concluded with Dan. It was very unique and specific. He was on top of all issues and timely and motivated to win. We obtained legal guardianship of our grandson and couldn’t be happier. His connections at the Cps and juvenile dependency court was key as he had worked there many years. He came to our house met us face to face and responded to our phone calls and texts . He specializes in juvenile dependency law so if that is what you are looking for hire him without reservation.

Daniel helped me tremendously! I’d been searching for an attorney to help me deal with a malicious former landlord. I spent a full year going back and forth with so many attorneys trying to find the right one. After Daniel heard me out and my situation we decided that a small claims lawsuit was the best option. It was such an emotionally and mentally taxing situation due to the grief the landlord put me through that I had difficulty compartmentalizing my emotional and logical responses at some points and Daniel was there to help me process and understand legal proceedings. He was there to help guide me through paperwork filings and the overwhelming frustrations that occurred due to the malice of that landlord. His support, knowledge, and understanding really got me through that dreadful lawsuit. Having no knowledge about lawsuit legal proceedings Daniel really pulled through as my advocate. Every panic text/email I sent he would promptly reply and help ease my peace of mind because the claims/evidence the landlord responded with was hogwash. His humanitarian side really shined through. In conclusion; I won my case, nixed the landlord’s countersuits, and walked away with a greater body of knowledge about lawsuit legal proceedings. Extremely grateful for Daniel being my attorney because without him I would have never been able to get through that.

Koryn Sheppard is a tough-nosed, no-nonsense attorney who does not mince her words, keeps the opposing counsel honest, and diligently and compassionately asserts her client's rights without any doubts. As far as issues in dispute, she will cut to the chase and save the client time and money. In the same respect, when an olive branch is extended to her to discuss matters reasonably, she knows how to take the gloves off to extend a handshake when things just need to be simple and reasonable. I would recommend her without a second thought.

I recently was charged with a crime, a felony, but because of prop 47, it became a misdemeanor, HOWEVER, perhaps not for me. To make matters worse, I picked up a SECOND case shortly after. I unfortunately have quite an extensive past, involving 2 state prison terms. Because of that, these misdemeanors could have very well been brought up to a felony, because of my past and I may have been facing another long prison term. I did not have much time to act, however I did not have the means for an attorney, and accepted the fact I would be getting a public defender. Without going into personal detail, I had A LOT more to lose than just my freedom, a mentally challenged brother who lives with me, as I take care of him. He ONLY has me. I had A LOT to lose. ONE DAY before my initial court date, I had the means to hire a private attorney. One day. I googled, "TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEYS IN SAN DIEGO", and MR. STEPHEN CLINE'S name came up, top on the page. I called his office. My call was answered by TRISHA PHILLIPS, Mr. Cline's office manager and assistant. Trisha listened patiently to my panicked story, was extremely professional and sympathetic towards me. I hired Mr. Cline OVER the phone with Trisha, and drove to his office to settle arrangements with her. In one hour, I had an attorney, without ever meeting Mr. Cline at that point, I somehow KNEW, I was in THE BEST of hands. Mr. Cline appeared in court for me the following morning. I received a call from Trisha afterwards relaying the outcome of the day. Because of the severity, not the charge thus far, but the severity of my PAST, Mr. Cline was completely up front with me of the possibilities I faced and his course of action he planned to take so I would receive the best possible outcome. Anyone going through a court case knows, your attorney can never guarantee you anything, but what he can tell you, is what he plans to do for you. This is the moment, you will KNOW, if you hired a great attorney, if he or she is planning to FIGHT for you. Mr. Cline did this for me. I KNEW, I could not have hired ANYONE better. I knew he was going to fight for me. He had legal aids work closely with me, gathering details that Mr. Cline requested, and he continued going to court, on my behalf, all through the court proceedings, and then I would be informed of each outcome. Finally, sentencing day and it was over. TWO cases, an extensive background, TWO prison prior terms......and I NEVER stepped into the courtroom ONCE, Mr. Cline did. I did NOT get a state prison term, nor even a county jail sentence. I am doing 3 months house arrest, 5 days public work service and of course, fines, which is out of any attorneys control. Believe me, going through court proceedings is terrifying, especially when you're facing prison. I have done it twice, and the court proceedings are almost worst than the time, almost. As frightened as I was about my possibilities of prison again, I never felt the intense pressures and stress of going to court. I never stepped a foot inside, I didn't have to, I hired, THE TOP CRIMINAL DEFENSE ATTORNEY IN SAN DIEGO !! This is a FACT ! I am not proud of my past, but I am not too ashamed of it either, I paid my dues and my debt to society and I've been told and I know, I paid a little too harshly for my offenses in the past. Thankfully, because of Mr. Cline, I did not have to pay once more, with my freedom. This ATTORNEY.....he is THE ONE to have on your side !!! I was almost sorry when it was over because I wouldn't be seeing him again.......NOT IN HIS OFFICE !! Not me ! I was would like to add, my case was finalized 3 months ago. I have had attorneys in the past...once the case is over, his office is done with you. Not at Mr. Cline's. I have called many times with questions since, regarding my court orders, and ALWAYS, Trisha is there to guide and advise me. I cannot say enough and I cannot THANK YOU enough Mr. Cline, Trisha and your entire team !!

Attorney Michael R. Juarez is a first-rate lawyer that will always represent you with your best interest in mind, fight for you when the scenario appears less than favorable and maintain the upmost respectable attorney/client relationship. I was represented by Attorney Juarez, through a divorce case, where opposing counsel for the respondent acted in a manner that was borderline unethical with obscene demands and often stating out-right lies. Attorney Juarez maintained a consistent professional demeanor and navigated the entire process, even, through a pandemic, in a masterly way. Due to his expert service, the outcome of the divorce effectuated with ease. If you are going through a family matter, Attorney Michael R. Juarez is who you want representing you.

Mr. Carroll's exceptional professionalism, knowledge of the law and dedication to my case was simply outstanding. I have never needed a lawyer before, so I wasn't sure what to expect. I can honestly say that the service I received was exemplary. He continually provided sound legal advice and spent countless hours working on my case. He kept me updated regularly and was extremely diligent in accomplishing our legal goals. I read the one-star reviews on this website and I can tell you from my experience, those comments sound nothing like Mr. Carroll. His demeanor and very impressive knowledge of the law made him very easy to deal with and he did not force me to make any types of decisions. He simply gave me the facts regarding my legal standing, advised me on my options and allowed me to make my own decisions going forward. You would be lucky to even meet a lawyer of Mr. Carroll's caliber, let alone have him represent you.

I had to fire Mr. Carroll and GoPro per. With an attorney like him, who needs a DA? He was worse than the district attorney trying to get me to incriminate myself. It almost seemed like he had a hidden agenda. Perhaps a deal with the DA. I had a federal case and he had me go to court without seeing a judge only DA, arresting officer, and another officer. Carroll yelled at me at the top of his lungs trying to get me to incriminate myself. He only visit me twice and both times he smell like whiskey and kept going on talking about heroin. My case had nothing to do with heroin. I can tell he was under the influence.

Myself and client tried contacting Mr. Samimi several times and still he has yet to return either one of our calls. We considered retaining a different attorney. That attorney knows Mr. Samimi, contacted him and asked about the case. He told us Mr. Samimi explained to him that he has 8 other cases and that this client is not his priority right now. The client has been falsely accused and has been in custody for 2 weeks meanwhile two other gentlemen accused of the same offense for the same case were released today. While I felt vulnerable and anxious about any outcomes- he remained even keeled with a unique ability to remain compassionate and non- judgmental. Mr. Spencer's ability to communicate in a clear and effective manner with the defendant and myself paved the way for a great outcome. As any lawsuit is stressful simply because of the ambiguity, he put me at ease that he can handle any curveballs with a solid knowledge base, timeliness and grounded responses.. He calls from unknown number, to call him you have to go thru the switch board and leave msgs. Most of the time he doesn't even call back, and other times responds via email. His customer service skills does not jive with the rate he charges you. As he is amongst some of the more expensive attorneys. He collects all the money upfront, that should've been a red flag! Lazy, Late, and incompetent. late for court twice. Had me plead guilty to a charge i wasn't guilty of. [Out of state residents are not required to register their weapons.] Cost me four times the actual amount of restitution. Poor communication. Tried emailing me that he was late for court because if he called his cell number would show up on my phone. [Who emails anything that needs immediate attention?] Told me to plead the sheet because he was too inept to negotiate a reasonable plea agreement. [why hire an Attorney if you;re just going to plead guilty to everything?] Charged me double the rate and said because it was two cases......after both were combined! There are times when I want to detest lawyers... but I can't. Know why? Because I know Michael McCloskey, that's why. In a world of ever decreasing respect for the legal profession, McCloskey defies the trend and shines a brilliant light on a tarnished trade. His sublime intelligence is never arrogant or aloof. His strength, conviction and intensity are as penetrating as an armor piercing shell. Mike's ethics direct him to take the high road (which is usually the road less traveled in the legal business). With Michael McCloskey on your side, you not only have the best representation, you have a friend and confidant. I had the good fortune to meet Michael and be represented by him some years ago. I came to admire him as both a person and an attorney. My only regret is that I haven't remained in closer contact with him as the years have passed. He has been an inspirational force and my life is enriched because of him. Respectfully, Michael [removed by Avvo staff] Orange, MA

I hired Lipman as my attorney by a soliciting letter that mailed to me in 2008. I was in Orange county, CA, and his office is in San Diego, my case was in district court in Santa Ana. He promised me that he will travel to Orange county for my trial if needed and would stay in his sister's house ( in Orange county ) to get my business and I singed a flat fee contract with paying him upfront. We had 8 co-defenders in the case and he told me that the chance to win the case in trial was less than 20% and advised me to plea. Out of 8, 4 plead and 4 went to trial and won the case. I had repeatedly asked him why other co-defenders don't want plea and asked him to communicate with their attorneys but never get anything back. Most of the time was his assistant answering my question. An ethical attorney would recommend you find a local attorney or attorney that worked in the court where your case is; He was not in OC, CA and had little in any experience in OC Fed district court. He is not a competent even he was expensive compared to my co-defender's attorneys, not even as good as public defender. Even with plea I got the worst result compared with other co-defender who plead too, although I was not the people who got most of the money from the "crime".

Mr. Ramirez kept continuing my case and sent in his FAMILY to court on my behalf to later hear it has to be CONTINUED over and over and over again. I caN tell you this, the judge was NOT impressed. I was so sick at the end of this that i decided to take a plea......i got screwed over at the end of the day. I cant find a job to save my life. I am being denied job after job after HE told me DONT WORRY ABOUT IT YOU WILL BE FINE. My first case was in 2005 and he did excellent work and my last case was in 2011 and it dragged on until February of 2013 and i still have a felony after i was told i wouldnt. I was mislead and NEVER informed as to what was going to happen in my case. When my case was over in 2013, i stood there like a dummy not understanding what happened and Mr. Ramirez says, i have another case, ill talk to you later, im like what just happened!!!?? I never heard anything from him NOR anyone from his office!!! we are now 2015 and stuck. I cried my whole way out of the court room and was ashamed as to what happened. He started off really good but i feel i he failed me, as a woman, as a mother AND AS A HUMAN BEING. Karma is a B&%$H!!

Well a friend of mine was sentence to life in prison for a crime he was ineffective which she had his case for five months and when it came to trial she asked for a continuous because she said I only had one week to prepare. If she would have asked to see the warrant she would have notice the warrant was invalid.. had seen the warrant she could have filed a 1538.5 motion to suppress evidence and a 995 motion to dismiss.. my friend would be a free man which he is actually and factually innocent of all charges.. But he still in prison after almost 11 yrs but he is still fighting for his freedom.. Don't hire her cuz she pick and chooses who she will defend but SHE WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY..

March 03/16/2020 She was hired as my husband’s Public Defender and she told him it was LEGAL To Be RACIALLY PROFILED?!?!? She has showed LITTLE Concern and has NOT DONE ANYTHING To Help He’s Case on he’s behalf. When my husband called her to discuss he’s Case that is the following day on March 3rd of 2020. She Put Him On Hold for another client who she said Was MORE IMPORTANT!?!?! Mind You They Are Both Incarcerated. When He Attempted to call back SEVERAL TIMES , He Got NO ANSWER. When I Had Talked to Her On The Same Day She Acted In A Rude & Nonchalant Matter. She Laughed and Cursed While Discussing Information To Me Regarding My Husband’s Case. Like My Husband Said She Showed VERY LITTLE CONCERN FOR HIM & HE’S CASE. PLEASE THINK TWICE BEFORE YOU LET HER BE YOUR PUBLIC DEFENDER!!!

Ms. Sommers took her time and explained all of the possibilities as well as the probabilities of my outcome thouroughly and was respoonsive to not only my calls but my questions and concerns. I'm glad she was assigned to me as my Public Defender, especially as this was my first and prayerfully last run in with the law. I would hire her in the future if I I ever needed a lawyer again!

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
