Mr. Scheid handled my nephew's brain-injury case in which he was at fault for drunk driving. This turned out to be a long, drawn out legal matter. Mr. Scheid was patient and thorough. He kept us abreast of developments at the many intervals of the case, and ultimately struck an equitable deal with the prosecution, which benefitted both the injured party and my nephew. For that, I am very grateful.

I was I charged with theft in Roanoke. I explained my charged to Mrs. Federico she listen and told me up front what my story sounded like and believed me. I did not steal anything, but she told me it was going to be very hard or to even get this dismissed. We went to court did the whole process. In the end she got the case dismissed. I admit I have do many things in my life and have never took anything from anyone before in my life. When I hired Mrs. Derrico I had been clean from drugs for 18 months. When I was using for 2yrs of my life I never took anything from anyone. Mrs. Derrico was upfront and honest with me and even put up with high strung fear of this charge. She believed me and I placed my faith in her. Believe if want to complaint about the cost of a lawyer then go with court a appointed lawyer and take your chances. Hiring a good lawyer is worth your future. To Mrs. Derrico is that lawyer. She was wonderful and did not play games. She was stright forward and did not tell me something to give me false hope. Thank you Derrico.

Was dealing with possession of marijuana and possession with intent to distribute. Underage consumption of alcohol and possession of a weapon. Dark time in my life. Took care of my case and was always prepared. Got all of my serious charges dropped and always stayed in touch. Took stress off of my mind and told me to relax. Very confident in the court room. Would definitely recommend to others who are as well in a serious pickle with the law. Thank you Joshi for everything.

We were looking to aquire an attorney for a probation violation. Mr morgan has a lot of experience in this area! He's very easy to contact; he answers any concerns very promptly. It was never hard to get in touch with him. His prices are reasonable! We ended up keeping the court appointed lawyer to save money, but we sure do wish we could have had Mr morgan. He CARES SO MUCH about his clients and went out of his way several times to help us even though we did not aquire him. He's a great individual, and he has a lot of experience. I would definitely recommend him

Mr. Goodwin was very professional and honest from the start, and gave me many different suggestions regarding how my speeding ticket case might be most favorable in court. I was traveling from NC to KY and was pulled over in VA after my 18 month old daughter got sick in the car - I was simply trying to get somewhere safe where we could take care of her. Mr. Goodwin was able to get my ticket dismissed, which completely exceeded my expectations. I would recommend Mr. Goodwin to anyone who might require his services.

I received a misdemeanor charge in a different state, which I was not convicted of. Unfortunately, the pending charge resulted in Fairfax County denying my CCW permit renewal without cause or due process. I found Mr. Frazer on VCDL's website and gave him a call to see if he could help me. Not only was his experience in firearms law vast and impressive, he also took a genuine interest in the application of law within this situation. He offered to work on either an hourly or flat fee, which was helpful as well. He kept in constant contact with me regarding both the case status as well as any information he might need from me. Mr. Frazer presented all legal options to me during the process. For example, should we have lost, it was wise to have a stenographer there so we would have a court record to appeal the decision. When we arrived at court, he presented a very well researched, developed and precedented argument. The judge was very impressed and agreed my case was "very well founded." John really helped me out, and was professional, honest and up front about the entire process. He helped me renew my permit which was denied on false grounds to begin with. I'm positive he is not only a good lawyer, but a good man, and has a firm grasp of the Constitution and the applied law associated with it.

When I was facing serious felony charges I met with quite a few lawyers in Northern VA before deciding on Peter Schwartz. No other attorney actually believed me to be innocent. They were willing to take the case and defend me, but I wouldn't dare hire a professional who says to my face and in front of my mother that I am a criminal. Peter was the exception. From the first time we spoke I knew he had a genuine interest in helping me, I knew that he trusted me. I had already been in jail for several days, knowing Peter would be defending me (for the right reasons) was just such an overwhelming relief. When we finally got to the courtroom, Peter was able to prove my innocence to a Fairfax County Judge. Beyond that the party responsible for filing the charges against me admitted to guilt and confirmed the story I had been telling from the start was true. Peter believed me and fought for me when no one else would. He was always courteous and professional in and outside of the courtroom. Because of this, Peter has and will be my attorney for as long as he practises law.

While serving as the CEO of a subsidiary of a larger Corporation my company was sued by the previous CEO for ten counts valued at over $10M. The previous CEO managed the company for three years and when he transferred the company to me it had a net income of ~11% and according the financial statements the company owed him ~$3M. Mr. Martin created and implemented a legal strategy and associated counterclaims that resulted in my company being found guilty of one count and paying no damages. The counterclaims resulted in the jury finding the previous CEO and his affiliates guilty of multiple counts to include; Fraud, Breach of Contract, Breach of Fiduciary Duty, Misappropriation of Business Opportunity, Unjust Enrichment, Defamation and Tortious Interference. The total damages found in our favor were just under $4M. I have used Mr. Martin’s legal services many times since then and I consider him to be the an outstanding attorney.

After searching Richmond and hearing all negative responses from criminal defense attorneys regarding my case, I found SHANNON TAYLOR who was positive from the get go, not to mention MUCH MUCH CHEAPER. From day 1, I felt comfortable with her as my defense and she never let me down. Indicted on 3 felonies in Federal Court at first, then reindicted on 6 felonies, she never waivered when I insitsted on going to trial. After 3 days at trial, the jury came back with a not guilty verdict on all 6 felonies. It is because of her, faith in God, and a never give up attitude that I am not a felon or sitting in prison right now. Thanks so much Shannon.

Sam took on our criminal case which could have rendered a catastrophic legal result. Without getting into the specifics of the case, the accused had an inappropriate relationship with a custodial minor. The felony and misdemeanor charges meant that the defendant was facing up to 24 years incarceration. But Sam had knowledge of system and the discernment to pursue a strategy which resulted in a small fraction of that time--less that a year. I will admit that I had doubts about his recommendations. But he proved to be absolutely correct and the outcome was better than anyone expected--including some of the state's own evaluators. . If you are ever facing a serious criminal charge and you need an attorney who understands the system and who can work on your behalf, I would highly recommend Sam Vance.

I had a felony drug possession charge in Henrico county and already had one previous felony (not drugs) conviction from approximately 8 years before. However Russ was able to get me into the "first offenders program" which was probation, fines and community service followed by dismissal of the case if I completed those requirements successfully (which I did). I didn't do a single day in jail and best of all no second felony! So now I feel as though I have a future and am much more employable than I would have been. One last thing I need to add is that when I emailed or called Russ, there wasn't a single time that he didn't get back to me within a few hours. I was always a priority and I truly believe that he cares about his clients which always makes a positive difference in the outcome of a case.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
