Bill Johnson is an amazing lawyer that I'd recommend to anyone. I had a dui violation that was circumstantial but being a third violation you can only imagine i was in need of serious help. Mr. Johnson responded to my call after another local lawyer flaked on me two weeks before my court date!!! We meet and built an instant rapport. I retained him on the spot. He devised a genius defense packed full of evidence and the case was dissmissed. I cant put in words just how much this man has helped me. Thank you so very much Mr. Johnson

I had an occasion to hire Ms. Allen to handle some legal matters for me and she was very knowledgeable and caring. She took the time to understand my legal issues and explained our options in a matter a non-legal person could understand. To make a long story short, we prevailed in court and I recommend Ms. Allen to anyone who's searching for an attorney that will take the time to make sure your rights are well protected!

Sid will talk to you frankly, he won't sugar-coat what you can expect from the process, he'll talk you through a plan of action, and he'll implement that plan exactly the way he agreed. His fees are clear and fair, he communicates regularly (without charging for short emails or phone calls to update you) and he gets the job done with sound advice and a well-organized plan.

My wife had a speeding ticket that was over 85 mph so it was a reckless driving offense. After talking to several different lawyers who quoted prices, some over a $1000, and gave little information I called this office. I spoke to the Legal Assistant who spend twenty minutes explaining the law and what we could do. Their price by the way was hundreds of dollars cheaper than anyone else. Did I mention my wife also had two other speeding tickets in the past two years? Mr. Beales was able to get the fine reduced to regular speeding. We live in Georgia and never had to appear in court in VA. I can't tell you how glad we were to find him.

I had Dori for the first half of a case with the previous firm she was at. Unfortunately she left the firm before my trial date. I am sure she was unable to inform me about her departure because of contract or whatever. I wish that she could have represented me at trial for my child custody matter, because I felt like she had much more confidence and would have gotten me better results. I tried finding her online but had no luck. She was familiar with my case and I felt like she actually believed in me as a father, which in turn she naturally would have fought harder. She was always quick to respond to any emails or phone calls---always within 24 business hours. I would strongly recommend Dori.

Very positive experience going to Obenshain Law Group! Justin and his staff are top quality when it comes to legal services and I always felt like I was in the best hands. Throughout the case, I saw the deep commitment from Justin and Maud to help me with my case and it was very reassuring. It was an excellent experience working with Justin who I felt had a thorough understanding of the law, very confident and most understanding. Maud was a pillar of strength, so thorough with due process, always patient, empathetic and gave me such confidence at every step of the process. Justin and team, you guys are the best at what you do! Thanks for helping me out in this case.

Margaret Englisby represented me in my divorce. A divorce that should have been pretty straight forward, but ended up being very ugly due to my ex husband. Margaret battled the entire time always putting my best interest first. Three years later my ex came at me again for a totally ridicules thing, once again Margaret was in my corner battling for me. Always straight forward, she keeps you informed without running up your bill with ton's of phone calls or emails.

Margaret reviewed all the documents I provided and did the research and legwork to obtain additional information from the police officer, court system and witnesses. There were three things that resulted in my excellent rating: Margaret listens and takes notes ensuring that she completely understands the situation and your expectations; She knows the law especially with regard to traffic and your rights; She creates a strategy for your case and follows through, using the information she obtains and her knowledge to get the outcome you need and expect.

I received two misdemeanor summonses while driving in Dinwiddie County - one for speeding, the other for a much more serious charge (eluding). I called a number of attorneys in the area, but was very impressed with Attorney Hartz from the beginning. She immediately gave me a list of things that I needed to do, and it just felt like she was taking a personal interest in my case. The bottom line is that Attorney Hartz was able to settle out of court, with the speeding charge being reduced to a non-misdemeanor, and the eluding charge dropped altogether! I was impressed at every stage by her knowledge and professionalism. In addition, her assistant Ashley also was very knowledgable and was able to answer any specific questions we had about the case, and she was always available by phone or by e-mail. All in all, I was extremely impressed by the handling of our case, and would recommend Attorney Hartz to anyone who is in a similar situation.

My daughter was charged with Malicious Wounding. I was worried and afraid and literally walked up to Ms. Patterson in the court parking lot asking for help. Jennifer agreed to take the case and went to work immediately to get her out of jail before the holiday weekend. She was successful in doing so. She continued to work diligently and subsequently all charges were dropped!! Knowledgeable, committed, great communicator, respected, understanding....these are just a few words I would use to describe Jennifer Patterson. I will always be grateful for the kindness extended to me as well as the hard work on my daughters behalf.

He has a way of explaining things that makes the average person better able to understand and evaluate the advice that he provides. He helped me with business litigation, my divorce in 05, General business and contract law. He knows the law very well, and knows how to apply it. Don’t let the his relaxed attitude fool you. In law the “devil is in the details” he knows the details. One of the best kept secrets in the area. A good lawyer with good rates. And he will actually return calls. I find that refreshing. And if you need him. He can be reached after hours. Much better service than the ambulance chancers you see on TV.

First of all, may I compliment on how awesome he is??? The most affordable lawyer I have ever seen for a case like this. So affordable I don't even want to post how little my fiancé (at the time) had to pay in case he changes his rate into the future. That's how affordable and fair he is. In all fairness, I did his filing for him. Haha If you have a lazy gold digger for a wife who wants to take your money bone dry he is definitely your man. I would say he is the best divorce lawyer in Hampton Roads. The best quality and price that I have ever seen. And he will end it! End it! End it!!!! He got her to agree to terms of my fiancé to sign...and this is a woman who initially wanted to murder him! I thought I was saving a life when we met. Anyway... I know he thinks he was always in email corrospondance with my fiancé but it was always me that emailed him, found him in the first place and made things looked like my fiancé had sent it. I did it out of love *sigh* at the time *sigh*. Only thing he ever did when it came to you was verbally speak. Never email. You were always speaking to yours truly. I'm just really good with writing things. Kinda my schtick. I wasn't impressed with any other 10 or so lawyers I checked out, some even in person...I thought he was screwed. Lol. Because my fiancé at the time had no money because he pays child support and apparently still doesn't understand responsibility until he has to get it court ordered. Which I think is ridiculous. Who likes court??? Mark is your man. He can handle it. He may be the only one that I could ever envision to be chipper in court. Probably because he knows he's going to win. Lol: So glad I found him because prior to him, he had another lawyer I literally fired. So when I found this website I remembered I forgot to rate the poor man! Mark! Here's a read so long it will make up the time it took for me to actually rate you. Finally, a message to Mark. You did such a wonderful name on my fiancé's case. I really really appreciate you more than you will ever know. I was raised around lawyers my entire life and you are such a JOY to be around! Most lawyers are such a snore or they're scary. You did a great job assuring a lost man, that you could turn his life around. I was in love with him. You did great! And for that, I forever thank you. But wasn't that the best filing job, you've ever seen??? I did that to save on cost and time. Best of luck to you and your family.

David Lawrence is a professional and takes his cases very seriously. I have used him twice in cases I had in Roanoke and Bedford and both times it went in my favor. He is a kind and gentle man but when it comes to court he is very serious. He takes your case to heart and fights with everything in his knowledge and experience to get you the best result possible. He will not let anyone walk on your rights and makes sure you are not treated unfairly. This man and his team worked miracles in my cases. Things happed that I never thought possible and to beat it all I never had to say a word. He went in there and owned the case and we walked out victorious. He and his team are top of the line in all their work. Very professional and never treat you as just another client. They really care about you and getting you the best outcome possible. They have a very reasonable payment plan that makes it easy for you to have him by your side in court. He and his team are just flawless

Mr. Davidson was recommend to me by a friend when I started looking for a divorce lawyer. When I met Mr. Davidson I felt safe and understood, for the first time in years. There was never any question that I asked that was not answered clearly to the point that I could understand, especially when explaining the legal system. Any time I had a problem come up I could call and he would call me back personally and help me through it, and help calm me down. He really dose care about his clients and tries to make the whole process as smooth as possible. Thank you so much Mr Davidson.

What a Criminal Defense Lawyer Can Do for You

A criminal defense lawyer provides legal representation to individuals or organizations accused of criminal conduct. If you're facing criminal charges, a defense lawyer will work to protect your rights, build a defense strategy, and ensure you receive a fair trial. Their primary goal is to reduce or dismiss charges, secure an acquittal, or negotiate a favorable plea deal.

Criminal defense lawyers have extensive knowledge of criminal law and court procedures. They investigate your case, identify weaknesses in the prosecution's evidence, and represent you in court, ensuring that you have the best possible defense.

When Should I Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer?

It’s crucial to hire a criminal defense lawyer as soon as possible if you are facing any criminal charges. Some situations in which you should seek legal representation include:

  • Arrest or police questioning: If you've been arrested or are under investigation, hiring a lawyer early on can prevent self-incrimination and protect your rights during police questioning.
  • Felony charges: Crimes such as murder, assault, drug trafficking, or robbery carry severe penalties, including long prison sentences. A defense lawyer is essential in these cases.
  • Misdemeanor charges: Even for less serious offenses like DUI, theft, or simple assault, a lawyer can help reduce penalties, negotiate alternatives to jail, or get charges dismissed.
  • Plea negotiations: If you’re considering a plea bargain, a lawyer can evaluate the deal, advise you on its consequences, and negotiate for more favorable terms.
  • Probation or parole violations: If you’ve been accused of violating probation or parole, a lawyer can defend you against additional penalties or revocation.
  • Juvenile offenses: For minors charged with criminal acts, a criminal defense lawyer can protect their future by minimizing legal repercussions or keeping the case in juvenile court.

What Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Do?

Criminal defense lawyers provide comprehensive legal services to protect their clients’ rights throughout the criminal justice process. Their duties include:

  • Case evaluation and investigation: Reviewing the evidence, interviewing witnesses, and investigating the facts to develop a strong defense strategy.
  • Legal advice: Advising you on your rights, the charges you’re facing, and potential defense strategies, including whether to take a plea deal or go to trial.
  • Negotiating plea bargains: Working with prosecutors to negotiate a plea deal that could reduce charges or minimize penalties.
  • Court representation: Representing you in all court hearings, including bail hearings, pretrial motions, trials, and sentencing hearings.
  • Filing motions: Filing motions to dismiss charges, suppress evidence, or reduce bail, depending on the specifics of your case.
  • Trial preparation and defense: Preparing a defense strategy and presenting arguments, evidence, and witnesses during trial to contest the prosecution's case.
  • Appeals: If you are convicted, a defense lawyer can appeal the conviction or sentence, arguing errors in the trial process or legal rulings.

How Are Criminal Defense Lawyers Paid?

Criminal defense lawyers generally charge clients in one of three ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: For straightforward cases (e.g., minor misdemeanors), some lawyers charge a one-time flat fee that covers all aspects of the defense.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex or ongoing cases, lawyers may charge by the hour, with rates varying based on the lawyer’s experience and geographic location.
  • Retainer fee: In cases where extensive work is expected, the client may pay a retainer fee upfront. The lawyer then bills against that retainer for their work on the case.

The cost of criminal defense services can vary greatly, so it’s important to discuss fees during your initial consultation.

How Much Does a Criminal Defense Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a criminal defense lawyer depends on several factors, including the severity of the charges, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost guidelines are:

  • Misdemeanor cases: For relatively minor offenses, such as a DUI or petty theft, a flat fee may range from $1,500 to $5,000.
  • Felony cases: More serious charges, such as assault or drug trafficking, can range from $10,000 to $100,000 or more, depending on the complexity and duration of the case.
  • Hourly rates: For cases billed by the hour, lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on their expertise and the case's location.
  • Additional expenses: You may also be responsible for other costs, such as filing fees, expert witness fees, or the cost of private investigators.

Be sure to clarify the lawyer’s fee structure and any potential additional costs during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Criminal Defense Lawyer

Before hiring a criminal defense lawyer, you’ll want to ensure that they’re a good fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask:

  1. What is your experience with cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has a strong track record with the specific type of criminal charges you’re facing, whether it’s DUI, drug offenses, or violent crimes.
  2. What is your fee structure?
Ask how the lawyer charges for their services and whether you’ll be responsible for any additional costs.
  3. What are the potential outcomes of my case?
A good lawyer should provide an honest assessment of your case and the likelihood of dismissal, a plea bargain, or conviction.
  4. How many cases have you taken to trial?
While many criminal cases settle with a plea deal, it’s important to hire a lawyer with courtroom experience in case your case goes to trial.
  5. Who will handle my case?
Ask if the lawyer will be personally involved or if other attorneys in the firm will handle most of the work.
  6. How do you communicate with your clients?
Be clear on how often and through what channels you can expect updates on your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Criminal Defense Lawyer

To verify the credibility of a criminal defense lawyer, take the following steps:

  • Check their standing with the state bar: Confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with your state’s bar association. Look for any past disciplinary actions or complaints.
  • Read online reviews and testimonials: Platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google can provide insights from previous clients about the lawyer’s communication, professionalism, and case outcomes.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should have past clients or other professionals who can speak to their competence and work ethic.
  • Review their case history: Look at the lawyer’s website or professional profile to see their experience with criminal cases, including high-profile or complex cases.
  • Look for trial experience: If your case might go to trial, make sure the lawyer has a strong history of courtroom advocacy and success.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your first consultation with a criminal defense lawyer, bring the following:

  • Details of your case: Be prepared to provide a detailed account of the charges against you, including any documents related to your arrest, police reports, and court dates.
  • Criminal history: If you have any prior criminal convictions, inform your lawyer so they can understand how that may affect your current case.
  • List of witnesses or evidence: If there are any potential witnesses or evidence that may support your defense, share this information during the consultation.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Prepare questions about their experience, legal strategy, and fees to ensure you understand how they will handle your case.
  • Bail or release documents: If you’ve been released on bail, bring any paperwork related to your release conditions or restrictions.

By being well-prepared, you can help your lawyer quickly assess your situation and begin building an effective defense strategy.
