Let’s Just say I was treated like Royalty today by Jessica and Attorney Dominic Major’s. The firm was HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO ME. Little did I know that my life would change today… I was dreading the process. I’m still in awe of the great treatment I received. He sent a few email and couldn’t get anything done if he knew this was not going any where on the few emails refund my money. Haven’t heard from him and dealing with the collection myself now. What a waste of 2000. Beware. I asked for a refund because nothing was getting done. He said he no refund I told him to also go ahead and take out whatever fees for the few emails he sent, but still didn’t wanna give me back any money. So he takes money from desperate people and desperate times and acts like he’s doing them a favor

She is very confident about what she does. She is very knowledgeable, Experienced, Organized, Straight forward, Caring and Good Hearted Person. She was my lawyer to evict a nasty chineese Guy. She didn't leave me alone when I was in the middle of an ocean. I had a terrible experience with that nasty Chineese Guy and She was all the time beside me to go through the process and get the job done.It took 6 months to evict that Chineese nasty Guy......That guy was that bad... I am extremely happy about her performance and her sense of responsibility.

Far and away THE WORST attorney in Bellingham. Not only was she rude and indignant, she could care less about you and your case. She’s only interested in money. And worse, here is an example of her extreme unprofessionalism: I followed each and every step she gave me for a Reply Declaration and even turned it in to her days before she asked for it back (in order for her to go over it and submit it to the courts for filing on my behalf) she not only did not file it, I had to learn about her NOT filing it by happenstance, and then when I confronted her about it asking why she didn’t file it and especially why she didn’t tell me that she didn’t file she claimed that she did it for “legal reasons.” That’s all she would tell me. DO NOT USE THIS ATTORNEY. You will regret it.

Terry answers and routes people needing help to the right legal and other resources competently. Even though she communicates in a Yankee dialect that reminds me of someone from the Northeast. EXCELLENT COMMUNICATION, answered ALL questions, fast response from entire team! Tracy and her team responded to my emails quickly, professionally, and completely. This was VERY important as I was working on this legal issue remotely from another state. Tracy and her team set me up to complete my legal endeavor with guidance along the way - asking questions and making suggestions. It involved real properties in more than one state as well as pensions. I HIGHLY recommend Tracy and her team and wouldn't hesitate to use them again!!

After doing okay business with him for years. He took on a new matter knowing exactly what I was asking for including filing a complaint. He ran up a bill for $900 (which was paid) to essentially make a demand letter and then waited almost a month after I instructed him to file the complaint to tell me he wasn't going to do the work. Might be time to actually retire Rob.

Charles Peach is a top notch, top of his game, SUPER ATTORNEY! He represented me through the MOST DIFFICULT case. I was worried what would happen if it went the wrong way. Charles worked long hard hours with me on this case preparing for every possible situation. He looked at every possible angle, knew every law, and was totally prepared. Charles got surprisingly VERY AGGRESSIVE at just the right moment in the courtroom, which I had not seen before. When the other side threw in " surprises" Charles stood tough and knew EXACTLY how to handle it. He didn't let their games sway him. He has integrity, manners and is well respected. I am grateful for his knowledge and expertise. His hard work saved me from what otherwise could have been a terrible future. Don't put your faith in a beginner attorney.. Trust an attorney that KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING, AND KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE THINKING AND DOING! Trust in Charles Peach. THANKS TO CHARLES PEACH I CAN SLEEP AT NIGHT,, NO MORE CRYING!! He PROVED MY INNOCENCE! Look NO FURTHER. Charles Peach is MY HERO!!!

I had an issue with a renter who was months behind and was threatening to block an impending sale of the property. Brad served a 3 day Pay or Vacate order the same day that I contacted him. He charged a very nominal fee which I gladly paid! When I dropped off the payment, we sat down for about 20 minutes and he explained the process to me if the renter continues to refuse to move. Brad was very knowledgeable about the process and calmed a lot of my fears about how bad it could be. Stop listening to the horror stories and give Brad a call!

Spoke to a John wagoner via legal shield. He was referred my case from an Indiana lawyer. When I sold to him tonight, he was completely unprepared, stated he couldn’t answer a question, everything would take three days for him to get back with me on about amending parent info on a Washington state Birth Certificate, also sounded very unenthusiastic, lethargic. Became upset with me after I asked what the purpose of the phone call from him was if he had no info submitted to him and couldn’t even answer common question in reference to the the field of law he practiced. Terrible. No I wouldn’t hire this firm if this gentleman was the person I had to work with.

Rude staff. No tact when dealing with people. The staff member literally sounded angry or upset. Maybe the call prior was upsetting, but you know. I dont think anyone deserved to be treated that way. Also they don't understand how to direct issues appropriately. Had to call to call several several times between 2 people to finally get the correct resolution to the issue. Cancelling membership because lambino martino is definitely no Kivel & Howard (Oregons PPL representation). Never had any issues when they were covering me.

I had thought that my case was a really typical, standard one- last will and testament, plus health directive. I used Microsoft's ARAG system to find an in-network legal representative and tried this local one in Redmond. The only thing remotely unusual was the fact that I don't have any family or loved ones who are local, they're all in Canada. It's kind of depressing but those are my circumstances. So, okay. I fill out a bunch of paperwork for them. Some questions about my assets, I answer them. There's a good amount of correspondence by e-mail and over the phone. They are rather slow to respond, sometimes over a week for anything. Not even a simple acknowledgement of receiving your mail. But, ok. It is almost time to proceed forward with the signing- only, the paralegal *insisted* I need a representative in the US to complete the paperwork. I was pretty sure I didn't. She said I did. What is a person supposed to do if they're unmarried, no kids, and not close to anyone in the US? Maybe it's not so typical, but surely there must be many people in that category. She said maybe I could do it without one, although she doubted it, and said she'd have to check with the lawyer. After all this, and having already spent a fair bit of time+effort working with them so far, why not wait a little bit longer. I never heard back. 2 months went by. Switched attorneys, got it done the same week.

Hiring this firm was the best decision we made! The entire team is easy to reach, returns calls and questions promptly and overall is a successfully run office. Molly is just the person we needed. She presented the facts, proved the law, she’s passionate, was aggressive when needed yet always maintained respect for the court. We have thanked her over and over but I don’t think she truly understands the warmth in our hearts she has given us, thank you Molly!! We truly appreciate everything you have done!! Throughout the lengthy, and often complicated, family/gaurdianship matter, Molly and her staff kept me very informed and even when I personally was unresponsive (due to work and mail forwarding because I moved, etc) they were immediately responsive when I finally came to my decisions. The custody and well being of your children is the most important thing in the world and Molly helped ease alot of anxiety and questions during the whole time. I would have been very much at a loss without her knowledge and professionalism. Molly is a loving parent herself and understands the importance of love in the home. I very very much thank her and her staff for all their patience with me, for all their work on the case, their time and help.

I hired Dave Tracy to evict a tenant of mine. He is very hard to reach he doesn't keep you updated and doesn't give you any information. He won't return phone calls and or emails but if he does decide to he will charge you 75$ for every email and phone call. Just to get my 3 day pay or vacate out I was already at $1,300.00 well the day we had court we all showed up and he submitted the paper work wrong and we didn't get on the calendar. This delayed my eviction process by 1 month if we tried to redo the process, so he chose to try and work a deal in the hallway with my tenant. The deal he worked up let her stay in my house till the 25th of the month and waived my rights to put it on her credit and any rights to ever go after her for back rent, late fees and attorney fees. After being their for 6 hours I felt backed into a corner he messed up my paper work and I had 2 choices to get her out on the 25th or go threw the process again I wanted out of their so she's moving on the 25th. Keep in mind if he would have done his paper work correctly she would have been out next week and I'd have a judgment for close to $10,000 against these people now I have nothing. I ask him if he would lower his cost since he made a huge mistake he said no I asked for his malpractice insurance he said no and hung up on me. I wouldn't recommend anyone use this guy he's not a good attorney. Huge waste of money and time and made my first eviction a horror story.

Very good attorney for eviction. Did everything except keeping me informed after the sentence. I wrote him about this and he cut his billing significantly. I was satisfied.

Priscilla A. Vaagen was the attorney for the other party in a child custody case. She ghosted my attorney every time we had issues. It was ordered through the court that any time I wanted a UA from my ex all I had to do was request it. Priscilla never made sure they were completed. She would not send the answers to my Motions causing me to get 6 continuances because she either did not show up for the hearings or she was not prepared. That cost me double money since I still had to pay for my attorney. Then she decided she no longer would represent my ex so we are on hold waiting for her to get another attorney. We have been in the court with this case for 18 months and it is still not resolved due to her incompetence. Run ... don't walk away from this attorney.

Priscilla did a great job on my divorce case. I never had an attorney prior to using her and she made me feel empowered to take my life back. I would recommend her to anyone who is looking for a understanding, tough, and smart attorney.

Absentee, judgemental; not very personable. Book smart , but lacks empathy. I have worked with three lawyers in the community and Lisa is the least responsive. Frankly, I wouldn't trust going to trial with her at all. Never even called when the judge asked her to..... twice. I always have to call her. She makes me feel not worth her time; unless I reel her in. She maty not like me but we're not in a college sorority!

He is the worst person ever. He will go after your money consistently, he would rather take you to court and garnish your wages than let something go to collections so you have more time to get situated. He has ruined my ability to be able to afford anything with my job and has now made all my bills behind because he’s a shark.

I pulled my credit report and found the amount and months I am paying are completely wrong. In addition the amount I owe per this man continues to increase thousands higher than I owe. I can't get ahold of him and the name he gave to contact in his voicemail is was said too fast to comprehend. He is ruining a chance for me and my family to get a roof over our heads. When I pay $300 he reports $100. This has got to be illegal!!!

I came to Jake on insistence from his staff that he knew what the court would do in a divorce. To quote them, Jake bragged about being able to call the award by a few hundred dollars. Jake avoided this question directly with answers like, I have handled 2500 divorces in my time. My impression Jake shoots from the hip. The first conversation he had my my spouses attorney was on the topic of how much this was going to cost me. Where I work this action would have created an ethics investigation and I was even billed for this call. Another huge mistake made involved me asking if working OT would affect the out come. Jake told me it would not. The outcome would be based on income before the separation date. Knowing I was going to get stuck with the majority of the bills I worked as much as possible after he gave me this legal advise . Jake was absolutely wrong with his advise. My OT was used in figuring the maintenance figure. In all, Jake's advise cost me close to 100K in extra Maintenance. Divorce is a hard undertaking. When confused and asking Jake questions he would start yelling. I came to him for advise not abuse. Looking back Jake offered very little advise in mediation. I was lead to believe he had my back. Jake didnt even know the tax consequence, but the spouses attorney sure did. Jake will pass that off as he is not a CPA. I ended up getting screwed. I asked Jake to get me to Mediation as fast as possible this ended up taking many months and costing 27k. This was settled in mediation and didn't go to court. If I had to do it all over I would find a younger attorney that had been divorced and knows the current law. Keep in mind all men's divorce guides state is an attorney doesn't know what the court will do is not worth their salt. Jake obviously doesn't .

I hired Jeff Davis to advise me about a problem with my ingress and egress easement. He said he knew the law, but then he wanted to use my retainer to pay him for his research time. Ultimately he learned less than what I learned from Westlaw on my own. He owed me a $500 refund but two years later, I still haven’t gotten my refund from him.

What a Debt Collection Lawyer Can Do for You

A debt collection lawyer helps individuals and businesses navigate legal matters related to debt collection. Whether you’re a creditor seeking to recover unpaid debts or a debtor facing aggressive collection actions, a debt collection lawyer can provide valuable assistance. These lawyers help creditors pursue legal action to collect overdue debts and ensure compliance with debt collection laws. On the debtor’s side, they help defend against unlawful collection practices, negotiate repayment plans, or file for bankruptcy if necessary.

If you’re dealing with a debt collection issue, a lawyer can ensure your rights are protected and work toward a resolution that aligns with your financial or business needs.

When Should I Hire a Debt Collection Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a debt collection lawyer if you are facing any of the following situations:

  • For Creditors:
    • Unpaid debts: If you’re a creditor (such as a business or individual) with unpaid invoices, loans, or accounts receivable, a lawyer can help you pursue legal action to recover the debt.
    • Debtor refuses to pay: When a debtor is unwilling or unable to make payments, a lawyer can assist with filing lawsuits, securing judgments, and enforcing those judgments to collect the debt.
    • Negotiating repayment plans: If you’re willing to work with a debtor to arrange a payment plan, a lawyer can negotiate and draft a legally enforceable agreement.
    • Legal representation in court: If a debtor disputes the debt or countersues, a lawyer can represent you in court and ensure your legal interests are protected.
    • Securing liens or garnishments: A lawyer can help you secure liens on a debtor’s property or garnishments on their wages to recover the owed debt.
  • For Debtors:
    • Facing debt collection lawsuits: If you’ve been sued by a creditor or collection agency, a lawyer can represent you in court and help you defend against the claim or negotiate a settlement.
    • Debt collection harassment: If creditors or debt collection agencies are harassing you or violating your rights under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA), a lawyer can help stop the harassment and potentially sue for damages.
    • Negotiating debt settlements: If you owe a significant amount of money but want to avoid bankruptcy, a lawyer can negotiate with creditors to reduce the total amount owed or set up a payment plan.
    • Disputing a debt: If you believe a debt is incorrect or have been wrongfully targeted by debt collectors, a lawyer can help you dispute the claim and provide evidence to resolve the matter.
    • Bankruptcy options: If your debts are overwhelming and you’re unable to repay them, a debt collection lawyer can help you explore bankruptcy as an option for debt relief.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you protect your financial interests and avoid escalating legal issues.

What Does a Debt Collection Lawyer Do?

A debt collection lawyer provides a variety of services depending on whether they are representing the creditor or the debtor. Their responsibilities often include:

  • For Creditors:
    • Filing lawsuits: A lawyer can file a lawsuit against a debtor who has failed to pay what they owe. This includes preparing and submitting legal documents, representing you in court, and pursuing judgments.
    • Negotiating settlements: If the debtor is willing to settle, the lawyer can negotiate a payment arrangement or reduced settlement that ensures you recover some or all of the debt.
    • Securing judgments and enforcement: After obtaining a court judgment, a lawyer can help enforce it through methods like wage garnishment, bank levies, or property liens.
    • Reviewing contracts and agreements: A lawyer can review your contracts and lending agreements to ensure that they comply with the law and are enforceable if a debtor defaults.
  • For Debtors:
    • Defending against debt collection lawsuits: If you’re being sued by a creditor, a lawyer can challenge the lawsuit, dispute the debt’s validity, or negotiate a more favorable settlement.
    • Stopping harassment: If debt collectors are using unlawful practices to collect a debt (such as threatening you or contacting you excessively), a lawyer can intervene and protect your rights.
    • Negotiating debt relief: A lawyer can negotiate with creditors to reduce the total amount of debt you owe or develop a manageable payment plan that suits your financial situation.
    • Disputing inaccurate debts: If a debt is not valid, a lawyer can help you gather evidence to dispute the claim and prevent further collection actions.
    • Filing for bankruptcy: If your debts are overwhelming, a lawyer can advise you on whether filing for bankruptcy is the best option and help you through the process.

How Are Debt Collection Lawyers Paid?

Debt collection lawyers typically charge for their services in different ways depending on the complexity of the case and whether they represent a creditor or debtor. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many debt collection lawyers charge by the hour, with rates typically ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity. Hourly fees are common when the lawyer is representing either party in litigation or negotiation.
  • Contingency fee: For creditors, some lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they successfully recover the debt. Their fee is typically a percentage of the recovered amount, usually ranging from 20% to 40%.
  • Flat fee: For specific services, such as reviewing a contract, drafting a demand letter, or defending a straightforward debt collection lawsuit, a lawyer may charge a flat fee.
  • Retainer: For larger or ongoing cases, a lawyer may require a retainer fee ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the case and the expected duration.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation and understand the total cost of their services before proceeding with your case.

How Much Does a Debt Collection Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a debt collection lawyer depends on whether you are a creditor or debtor, the complexity of the case, and the lawyer’s experience. General cost estimates include:

  • Hourly rates: Most debt collection lawyers charge between $150 and $500 per hour. Complex cases involving litigation or large amounts of money may result in higher legal fees.
  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, they typically charge between 20% and 40% of the recovered amount. For example, if you recover $10,000 and the contingency fee is 30%, the lawyer would take $3,000.
  • Flat fees: For simpler services like drafting a demand letter or responding to a debt collection lawsuit, flat fees may range from $500 to $2,500, depending on the work required.
  • Retainers: For larger or ongoing cases, a lawyer may require a retainer fee ranging from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on the complexity of the case and the expected duration.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to avoid surprises and ensure that the services fit your budget.

Top Questions to Ask a Debt Collection Lawyer

Before hiring a debt collection lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with debt collection cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether you’re a creditor or debtor.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, on a contingency fee basis, or a flat fee, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Debt collection cases can take time, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last, from filing the claim to recovering the debt or resolving the dispute.
  5. What are my legal rights?
Ask the lawyer to explain your rights as a creditor or debtor, including protections under laws like the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA).
  6. Will you personally handle my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be managing your case.

How to Check the Credibility of a Debt Collection Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable debt collection lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for debt collection experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in debt collection law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and ability to handle debt collection cases.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on debt collection matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in organizations like the National Creditors Bar Association (NCBA) or other relevant associations that focus on debt collection law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a debt collection lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Creditors:
    • List of outstanding debts: Bring a detailed list of the debts owed to you or your business, including invoices, contracts, or other supporting documentation.
    • Previous communication with the debtor: Provide copies of any emails, letters, or phone call logs showing attempts to collect the debt.
    • Contracts or agreements: Bring any contracts or agreements related to the debt, as they may be critical in proving your case.
    • Judgment information (if applicable): If you’ve already obtained a court judgment against the debtor, bring the judgment documents and any enforcement attempts.
  • For Debtors:
    • Debt collection letters or notices: Bring any correspondence from creditors or collection agencies, including demand letters and collection notices.
    • Payment records: Provide proof of any payments made toward the debt, including receipts, canceled checks, or bank statements.
    • Debt validation or dispute documentation: If you’ve disputed the debt or requested validation, bring copies of the dispute letters and the creditor’s response.
    • Legal summons or lawsuit documentation: If you’re facing a lawsuit, bring the court summons, complaint, and any legal documents related to the case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
