Attorney Aja Mann, was my lawyer for 13 years. In those 13 years of representing me, she was outstanding! Not only did she advise me with wisdom and grace, she taught me that you must be fair and compassionate when it comes to difficult situations while co-parenting. Because of her I was able to obtain full custody of my son, and I thank her every day for in some form or fashion for bringing me joy and peace.

After visiting my son who lives out of state, I was deeply concerned by his emotional struggles and the difficulties he was facing at home with his mom. As a divorced parent living in another state, I felt powerless to advocate for him and feared I was failing as a father. My visitation rights and other arrangements had always been unfair, dictated by the terms of the other party. From our first conversation, Aja reassured me that I had parental rights and a voice in my son's well-being. Her exceptional negotiation skills and unwavering advocacy led to more equitable arrangements for our family, prioritizing my son's health and happiness. We are incredibly grateful for her efforts and highly recommend her to anyone in need of a sharp, dedicated attorney who will fight for you.

Not an actual or legitimate law firm at all they just post a lot of ads on social media like Instagram for typical ambulance chasing and slip and fall type stuff. They don't actually pursue cases at all they send out referrals and then mismanaged cases from there... Once they missed manager case they're going to try to collect fees off the client

I was referred to the Knoll Law Group by a reputable source after sustaining injuries in a car accident, and Miss Roxanna called me right away. Fully Recommend Knoll Law Group (and it is not something I do often). I had a situation with my former employer in regards to the end of my contract. I went to several lawyers and firms until I reached Syndel, where I could notice the outstanding knowledge and service. They truly understand, respect you as an individual and give the most thorough and honest advice as they listen carefully, ask the right questions to then strategize. They empowered me with the necessary knowledge to find an agreement and recommended that, before engaging in formal legal action. I fully recommend them, and I'm truly thankful as I was victorious by settling.

Very disappointed. Reply to reply. Your firm is still on the service list of documents to this day. We had an agreement where, in lieu of a discount to the total bill, you would continue to represent me on the loose ends at no charge. You then immediately, without notice, filed to be removed as my council.

Divorce is anything but a walk in the park, but through the distress, anxiety, and uncertainty around the process, Katie Fox, and her team at Fox & Bank, have done a phenomenal job in allaying any concerns or fears that I had, and helped run mediations between myself and my ex-spouse in a comfortable, fairly low-stress, and overall effective manner. Katie Fox is a consummate professional, and understands fully, the nuances around divorce, and the toll it can take on both partners, and their families. I felt heard and understood, and for that, I am extremely appreciative and grateful of her.

Dear Ginny and Cynthia (Paralegal), I wanted to express my deepest gratitude and appreciation for the incredible work you've done as my lawyer during what has undoubtedly been a challenging and emotionally draining time in my life – my divorce. After another Family Lawyer charged me $40K and didn't do anything but expensive discoveries, I ended up in Adam Gurley's Office begging for help. He his a kind-hearted lawyer with a deep knowledge of Family Law. He immediately put his associates to do re job. They did a supreme job without the exuberant partner fees. They are a team of caring professionals without the greed of most family law attorneys. It was a bit inconvenient to drive to his office as I live in Daly City, but it was well worth it. They were available after regular work hours and the weekends.

I hired Mr. Gurley after his initial consultation when he overstated his abilities and also asked me to write a favorable review (on another website) due to a competition he had going with another attorney. He started out pretty good but when push came to shove he pretty much sold me out. The real eye opener was in an all day negotiating session he arrived ahead of me and without waiting for me to arrive , began meeting with opposing counsel and did not respond to my phone calls. He went on to make numerous comments regarding the lack of value while negotiating personal property issues. Then after we had negotiated a settlement, and I requested that he NOT continue responding to opposing counsel's requests, which amounted to clerical functions while charging out at an attorney's hourly rate, Mr Gurley withdrew from my case as I was in the middle of packing and scrambling to lease an apartment, after my initial agreement fell through. I was shocked that he would pull such a unprofessional maneuver. I would not recommend him to a friend .

Pros: Intelligent, highly knowledgeable about Monterey family court system, years of experience, efficient with her time and yours Cons: Often difficult to reach; calls and emails sometimes not returned for months, or at all. Reluctant to pursue cases that weren’t an easy win. Refused to help with a medical neglect/medical custody case, which several therapists and teachers told me I needed to pursue or myself be guilty of neglect. After $400/hour to Kari and $150/hour to paralegal. At the end of the day after 5 months of representation and thousands and thousands in legal fees you have no positive results. You will be pitched with experience and how aggressive and her matchups against other attorneys in town. Tooting one’s own horn and you get nothing to show for it. I hated the opposing attorney of my ex cause she lies and plays dirty. What am I telling you? The more aggressive attorney gets you results. You won’t find it here. Go elsewhere please. Ask why such a successful business can’t get the website working?

I hired Mike Ross as my lawyer two years ago for a case regarding a spurious robbery charge. Why review him now? Because after I went onto multiple sites including this one in order to warn people of my experiences I decided against it because he had been negatively reviewed into the ground. Indeed, even before I hired him, I printed out the reviews that greatly troubled me, and showed him and asked for his explanation. Using the greatest skill he ever showed me, he deftly wound each story into the other. So many reasons from each client. Bitterness. Regret. Lack of financing. His inability to help them due to them either hamstringing him, or going against his advice, or just being guilty with overwhelming evidence against them. I was glued to these stories, and impressed with his speaking style. Surely, I thought, if he defends me with even a modicum of the same skill, this is an easy win, right? Looking back, he divulged way too much information, and I wonder what he tells people of me now, even what rationalizations he uses to say why I am just like all the other clients he discredited. I don't know what he's done or how, but this site now shows a five star average rating for him. It's both ridiculous and impressive. I'd laugh if he hadn't caused so much harm. Reputation is everything, and it is fitting that Mike Ross' reputation is the only thing he will work his magic to defend and protect. I chose Mike Ross because I was impressed that a lawyer of his experience could be had for the price point. Careful what you wish for. Other lawyers had quoted me anywhere from 12-25k to go to trial, which I was deadset on, being falsely accused. He quoted me a paltry 10 grand. 5 up front, two payments splitting the rest after. What a deal! i quickly signed our agreement and paid him the first 5k and then an additional 2.5 very shortly after, eager to secure such a skilled man before any one else monopolized him. The only thing that tripped me at the time was his equal rush for me to sign, and a tiny portion of fine print saying the quote was for "pretrial services", which of course was not what we agreed. But he laughed it off, said they'd grabbed the wrong papers, and crossed it out, writing over it in what seemed like pen, that it was including trial services once full payment was received. Hindsight, right? So how did it go? We had film and witnesses proving my innocence. I truly felt there was nothing that could possibly go wrong. I felt strange that I only ever called him, never the reverse, but if it was such a slam dunk, so what? Then he deposed me, but not really, it was the last time I ever saw him. He met me in a secluded spot out in old town Sac by the river and took notes on my version of events. He noted that I had not gathered the relevant film nor contacted the relevant witnesses, to my shock, which he said he'd guess he'd have to do then. He never did. Then for three months before the trial, ignored my calls with the exception of his secretary calling to inquire about the final 2.5k, which we'd already agreed he'd get once the trial date was set, which also should have alerted me. On the date of the pretrial hearing, we went on Zoom, he came on late, and just destroyed any hope I had. He said he was there for pretrial only, and not my main council. Then once I, flabbergasted, asked to recess the hearing to talk to him on the phone, he denied. The ADA offered a bad deal never discussed, and Ross stopped it and said then and there that if I didn't accept it, he was gone, and I was on my own. I had no more money, and therefore no way to sue him, and worst, was blindsided at my greatest hour of need. He knew this. I made what deal I could without him and just plead out. No evidence, no witnesses, he had never done any work he promised. Just like that, he disappeared. You will regret any relationship to this man. Maybe he erases this too. Please don't make my mistake!

I went through a very horrible divorce, and an extremely difficult child custody battle. Robin would always listen to all of my concerns, and addressed them as best as she could. She was very sympathetic to the pain the difficulties put me through. She would always make sure that I had answers to all of my questions in a timely manner. She never lied to me or try to sugar coat anything. She would just let me know the plain, and sometimes very hard, truths. She very patiently walked me through the whole long process. She always made sure that I knew all the good and bad possibilities, and prepared me for every possible outcome. She would always reassure me through the discouraging phases, and rejoice with me in the victories. After informing me of all the possible options we could take, she wouldn’t push me to go one direction or the other but, she would wait patiently for my decision on which path to take. After I was fully informed and had made my decision then, she would pursue that path wholeheartedly, with all her knowledge and skills. Thankfully in the end we were wonderfully victorious in our case. I say “we” because, with Robin you won’t feel you’re going through it alone. I truly believe the reason why we were so successful is because of Robin’s guidance, patience, knowledge and skill. She is a fantastic attorney, and I recommend her to everyone who wants only the highest quality attorney in their corner. Thank you Robin for all that you have done for me and my children.

I met with Miller Family Law regarding a Temporary Restraining Order filed against me. After the initial consultation, based on both Matt and Evelin's thoughtful approach I retained the firm. I was impressed by Matt and Evelin's combined knowledge of the process and their ability to develop a defense that was concise, accurate, and thorough, which resulted in a removal of all temporary orders. Their follow up advice since the matter was settled has also been valuable. I could not recommend the Miller Family Law Group any higher. Thanks Matt and Evelin for all your hard work!

Have been through the mill with divorce attorneys, five of them and over $100,0000 in legal fees and almost 2 years in court before I found the Miller Family Law Group. Matthew Miller was able to get my case on track, get things in order, utilize the law on behalf of my son to get 2% custody (can you believe?) turned to 46% custody. The Family Law Court is such a dens of thieves with attorneys playing divorce games, threatened restraining orders, filing phony police reports, etc. Matthew Miller turned all this around. No games, just the law. Matthew and Evelina work tirelessly, even in the late hours, and they've had to work with a frustrated dad. Matthew Miller practices law like it should be practiced. He won't throw tomatoes for you. He will just get what needs to be done, done. And out of the six attorneys I've hired, his fees were the most reasonable!

When I first retained Mr. Miller 8 years ago for my divorce and ugly child custody matter, I was especially concerned with his youthful, boy-next-door appearance. I wasn't sure he would be tough enough for the battlefield. I quickly learned Matthew is more than capable. Not only does he know the law, but he understands the politics and procedures of how these things work. He knew when to sit back and when to stand up. His advice to me was spot-on and results were even better than I expected. Several years later when I needed his services again, he again did a fantastic job for me and my family. Together with his wife/partner Evelina, the Miller Family Law Group has been nothing but professional and effective. They've both always been accessible and totally available whenever I've had questions and have explained every process to me fully and respectfully. Most importantly, I completely trust Matthew. He has represented me, advised me and fought for me. These types of matters are so difficult and emotional you need someone who is looking out for your best interests. It's been many years but I continue to be immensely grateful for Mr. Miller's service. I highly recommend Matthew Miller as a family law attorney.

She not only took on my case but got me my fair share. Recently she took my case again as he tried to lie, and get out of paying the Alimony. I can’t say enough about Her and the caring profession that she is. I know it was a Devine blessing, and a gift from God that I ran into that day on the hallway crying? and not knowing what to do. I came into contact with Nathalie through her involvement in Step Forward Foundation, a non-profit legal organization serving low income clients with Domestic Violence (DV) issues. In the 22 years that I lived with DV, and for the additional 3 years my husband continued to perpetrate DV against me after our separation, I searched high and low for an agency to help me but was unable, because the form of DV my husband perpetrated against me involved restraining me, shaking me, throwing things at me, threatening me, spitting on me, withholding assets from me, and other actions that didn't involve hitting or leaving physical marks on me that would warrant assistance from police and courts. Finally, I began secretly making videos of his attacks on me and took one of these videos to the Step Forward Foundation, where my appointment was referred to Nathalie. What a God-send that appointment was! Nathalie took my case right away. She not only represented me in the courts, but she provided the validation and support that I needed to begin to re-learn that what I was suffering really was DV, and unacceptable treatment of me - because after 25 years of calling the police and petitioning the courts and getting no assistance, I had come to believe that "maybe it was just me" or "maybe this is just normal." Nathalie's commitment to my case made me feel important again, and I began to grow stronger in my resolve to finally stand up to him. Nathalie won for me a 5 year DV Restraining Order that protects not only me, but also it protects my son until after his 18th birthday. The terms of the Restraining Order require my ex/his dad to go through significant counseling, drug screening and rehabilitation, etc., before he can resume visitation again, and it requires to visitation be supervised. This is an almost unheard of ruling, as most restraining orders are only granted for 1 year and do not prohibit the relationship between parent and child as was needed to also protect my son. After my DVRO was awarded, Nathalie continued on with me and took me as a client in her private practice to ensure that my divorce (pending in the court system and held up by the manipulation and delay tactics of my ex) would be finalized. Prior to Nathalie, no lawyers would take my divorce case. My gross income was too high to receive pro-bono services from non-profit agencies on matters besides the DVRO, but the marriage nor myself personally had any assets or savings to pay the lawyer's retainers and fees. Nathalie demonstrated commitment to ending DV for me once and for all when she reduced her retainer fee and wrote a fee agreement contract with me that allows me to pay her for her services at whatever (reasonable) monthly payments I can afford. Other lawyers refused to represent me unless I could pay $5,000 - $15,000 up front. Nathalie is allowing me to go into debt with her, which I am so grateful for that I feel like I will be indebted to her for the rest of my life - not in a monetary sense, but in the sense that without her help, I may very well have been stuck in my marriage forever, subject to abuse and torment. Nathalie bills reasonably, and doesn't penny-pick every millisecond you are on the phone with her like other lawyers do. She understands financial constraints of her clients and uses her time wisely to avoid over billing them. My case is scheduled for trail in 30 days, and I am so excited about the new life that lies ahead of me. There are some people in your life who serve such a meaningful purpose in transitioning you from one state of being to another. Nathalie is that for me. I will always hold regard for her in my heart and her success, well being, and blessing will for the rest of my life always be a part of my prayers. I ABSOLUTELY recommend her.

After working with Mr. Thorne for 2+ years it became clear to me that he is well respected by judges and opposing counsel. I felt like he took the time to get to know me at our first consultation and returned my phone calls fairly quickly throughout this whole process. Anyone that's going through a divorce knows that things can pop up at any minute and I was glad to be able to get responses in a timely manner. Going thru a divorce during COVID was no easy task, but things moved pretty quickly to my surprise. He was able to get the ball moving for me and get a court hearing scheduled in a decent timeframe. I appreciate his honesty, even when it came down to things that weren't obtainable.

He and his staff always kept me up-to-date on what was going on with my case. I was able to reach them when I needed to. I have used a couple other family law attorneys in my past before I knew Mr. Thorne. I would highly recommend Mr. Thorne over any of the other attorneys I used. He is definitely fair and will fight for you!

I was really impressed with the way Attorney Lacy was very direct with me. I was really angry and emotional, and he was able to redirect my goals to be reasonable. I was really in a vulnerable state of mind, and he told me he needed to protect me from me more than anything. He was right. I have friends who spent tens of thousands of dollars on their divorces, and I am really glad looking back now that I did not. I have Attorney Lacy to thank for that.

Mr. Lacy was unable to assist in achieving my goal of equal and shared parenting and custody. He seemed to go through the motions. Prepared documents had errors and lacked clarity. This resulted in extra back and forth and fees. Ultimately, I found a new attorney to represent me. Examples: - He correspond with opposing counsel to address court ordered phone calls/schedule but failed to achieve anything - Rather than work for me, he seemed to agree to anything opposing counsel requested - Mr. Lacy was difficult to contact and working with him was a mistake I'm writing this review to make others aware that Mr. Lacy is a "fair/average" attorney, despite his advertisements and sensational ratings. I was shocked to see "superb" as his Avvo rating. This is not accurate.

My wife was facing felony gun charges & an aggressive DA's office. The 1st attorney we hired was unacceptable. He accomplished nothing with the DA, was pessimistic about the case & tried to pressure my wife into pleading to serious charges. Sam took charge from the get go, had a balanced view of the case & worked with the DA to make them see the serious flaws in their case. First Sam got the charges reduced to a misdemeanor & then got the DA to agree to dismiss the charges without my wife pleading to anything. Excellent result, Sam! Thanks for getting this scary monkey off our backs & for even getting the criminal restraining order officially terminated. Sam is intelligent & focused, has a quick grasp of complicated facts, is totally reliable for court appearances & paperwork & is a well-spoken, respected advocate in court for his clients.

DO NOT HIRE THIS FIRM!. Mr. Schweitzer handed off my case to a junior attorney, Brooke Mulligan, and she proved to be completely incompetent. When I asked to have her removed from my case after making multiple major mistakes, he said he would oversee my case more personally. She continued to make constant costly and time consuming mistakes and actually argued with me twice, once in front of Don, regarding a subpoena that she served to the wrong entity twice and was going to serve incorrectly for the third time. When I again asked to have her removed, Don didn’t even have the professionalism to respond, but while I waited to hear from him, they continued to bill me until they conveniently used up all of my retainer. He never did have the courtesy to respond to me and make an effort to correct their mistakes. Divorce is bad enough but there is nothing worse than having an attorney who is not on your side. Brooke and Don, you know what you did, my file and emails prove it. You should be ashamed.

Attorney Douglas Pharr genuinely cares about his clients. I had another attorney to help with the same case but for another reason, and Attorney Douglas Pharr made sure that he was on the same page as my other attorney before he made other decisions. We highly recommend the Law Office of Douglas Pharr, for his EXPERTISE, COMMUNICATION, and his team's PROFESSIONALISM.

Everyone I dealt with at Grey Legal Group, APC was courteous, professional and responsive. My attorney, Deborah Fujiwara, was kind, honest, and knowledgeable. During the process and trial, she guided me every step of the way. On trial day she was so organized and professional, like a pro attorney you expect to see in a big budget cinematic courtroom drama– only without the arrogance. Honestly, the contrast between Mrs. Fujiwara and the opposing counsel was like night and day. Her professionalism was impressive and helped reduce my anxiety and inspired confidence. I highly recommend the Grey Legal Group!

What a Domestic Violence Lawyer Can Do for You

A domestic violence lawyer provides legal assistance to individuals involved in cases of domestic abuse, whether you are a victim seeking protection or someone accused of domestic violence defending against the charges. These lawyers help with obtaining restraining orders (protective orders), representing clients in criminal court, and handling related family law issues such as child custody, divorce, and visitation rights.

If you are dealing with domestic violence, a lawyer can help protect your rights and navigate the legal system to ensure your safety or defend you if you’re falsely accused.

When Should I Hire a Domestic Violence Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a domestic violence lawyer if you are:

  • A Victim of Domestic Violence:
    • Filing for a protective order (restraining order): If you need immediate protection from an abuser, a lawyer can help you file for a protective order, which legally requires the abuser to stay away from you and refrain from contacting you.
    • Divorce or separation due to abuse: If domestic violence is a factor in your relationship, a lawyer can help you pursue a divorce or legal separation and ensure that you are protected throughout the process.
    • Child custody and visitation issues: A lawyer can help you secure custody of your children and limit or restrict the abuser’s visitation rights to protect the safety of your children.
    • Filing criminal charges: If you are pursuing criminal charges against the abuser, a domestic violence lawyer can work with law enforcement and prosecutors to ensure the case is handled properly.
    • Assistance with safety planning: A lawyer can advise on the legal steps to create a safety plan, including securing temporary housing, and taking steps to protect you and your family.
  • Accused of Domestic Violence:
    • Defending against criminal charges: If you’ve been accused of domestic violence, a lawyer can defend your case, challenge the evidence, and represent you in court. If possible, the lawyer can help get charges reduced or dismissed.
    • Challenging a restraining order: If someone has obtained a protective order against you, a lawyer can help you contest the order to prevent it from negatively impacting your life, including your employment and child custody rights.
    • Dealing with family law issues: Domestic violence allegations can affect child custody, divorce, and property division. A lawyer can represent your interests in family court and ensure that your parental rights are protected.
    • Avoiding criminal record implications: A lawyer can work to minimize the impact of the allegations on your record, which can affect your employment, housing, and future legal matters.

Hiring a lawyer at the earliest stages can help ensure your rights are protected and the case is handled effectively, whether you are seeking protection or defending against accusations.

What Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Do?

A domestic violence lawyer provides various legal services depending on the specifics of your case. These responsibilities often include:

  • For Victims:
    • Filing for protective orders: A lawyer can help victims of domestic violence obtain temporary or permanent restraining orders, which provide legal protection by restricting the abuser’s access to you and your children.
    • Representing you in divorce and child custody matters: Domestic violence often leads to divorce or separation, and a lawyer can represent you in family court to protect your assets, secure custody of your children, and arrange spousal and child support.
    • Criminal representation: Lawyers work with law enforcement and prosecutors to pursue criminal charges against the abuser, ensuring that you are informed and supported throughout the legal process.
    • Safety planning and legal advice: Lawyers provide advice on how to stay safe legally and can assist in securing temporary housing, providing guidance on how to leave abusive situations safely.
  • For the Accused:
    • Defending against charges: A lawyer will build a defense by investigating the case, gathering evidence, and challenging the claims made against you. If necessary, the lawyer can negotiate with prosecutors to reduce charges or penalties.
    • Challenging protective orders: If a restraining order has been placed against you, a lawyer can contest the order and present evidence to defend against it, aiming to minimize its impact on your life and reputation.
    • Handling related family law issues: Lawyers help defend against domestic violence allegations in divorce, child custody, and visitation disputes, working to protect your parental rights and reputation.
    • Preventing long-term consequences: A lawyer will work to protect you from the long-term consequences of a domestic violence conviction, such as a criminal record that could affect employment, housing, and more.

How Are Domestic Violence Lawyers Paid?

Domestic violence lawyers generally charge for their services in different ways depending on the case's complexity and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many domestic violence lawyers charge by the hour, with rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location. Hourly rates are common for both criminal defense and family law matters.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as filing a restraining order or defending against a straightforward domestic violence charge, some lawyers offer a flat fee that covers all legal work related to that service.
  • Retainer: In complex cases, such as those involving criminal charges, divorce, and custody disputes, a lawyer may require a retainer fee, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some domestic violence lawyers provide pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services to victims of domestic abuse who cannot afford legal representation.

It’s important to discuss fees during your consultation to ensure you understand how much your case will cost and what payment options may be available.

How Much Does a Domestic Violence Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a domestic violence lawyer depends on the complexity of your case, the lawyer’s experience, and the type of legal work required. General cost estimates include:

  • Restraining orders: The legal fees for filing a protective or restraining order typically range from $500 to $2,500, depending on whether the case requires a hearing.
  • Criminal defense: If you’re defending against domestic violence charges, legal fees may range from $2,500 to $15,000 or more, depending on whether the case goes to trial and the severity of the charges.
  • Family law issues: Legal fees for divorce, child custody, and other family law issues related to domestic violence can range from $3,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case.
  • Hourly rates: Domestic violence lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour for their services, with more experienced lawyers charging higher rates.

Always ask for a detailed cost estimate during your consultation to understand the total cost of legal services.

Top Questions to Ask a Domestic Violence Lawyer

Before hiring a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the right experience and approach for your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with domestic violence cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled domestic violence cases similar to yours, whether you’re a victim or the accused.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, flat fees, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely outcome of my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and expected outcomes.
  4. How long will the process take?
Domestic violence cases vary in length, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what might cause delays.
  5. Will I need to appear in court?
Ask if your participation in court is required, and how the lawyer plans to represent you during hearings or trials.
  6. What steps should I take to protect myself or my rights?
Whether you’re a victim seeking protection or defending against allegations, ask the lawyer how they will help you navigate the situation.

How to Check the Credibility of a Domestic Violence Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable domestic violence lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for domestic violence experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in domestic violence cases and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients say about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have been involved in domestic violence cases.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Look for certifications or memberships in family law or domestic violence advocacy groups, such as the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence (NCADV).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a domestic violence lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • For Victims:
    • Details of the abuse: Prepare a detailed account of the abuse, including dates, locations, and descriptions of any injuries or threats.
    • Police reports and medical records: Bring copies of any police reports, medical records, or photographs that document the abuse.
    • Legal filings: If you have already filed for a restraining order or been involved in any legal proceedings, bring copies of those documents.
    • Questions about your safety and legal options: Be ready to ask about the best steps to protect yourself and your family, as well as what legal actions you should pursue.
  • For the Accused:
    • Details of the allegations: Prepare a detailed account of the incident or allegations against you, including any evidence or witnesses that support your defense.
    • Legal documents: Bring any legal documents you have received, such as a restraining order, criminal charges, or child custody filings.
    • Questions about your defense: Prepare questions about the legal process, possible penalties, and how the lawyer plans to defend your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation and provide the best possible legal advice.
