Was not helpful in the slightest. Instead of giving any helpful advice even though they couldn't help us, they pushed us aside as if they didn't care about our legal and troubling issues. I directly asked for a referral if they couldn't do it themselves and I never got a response. Talk about being selfish. I'll never recommend anyone that isn't for what's right and just. Bottom line.

All the attorneys are very knowledgeable on the laws. Always keep me up to date on my case. They had an amount they would settle for, and stuck with that amount to the end. It made it so much easier than dealing with the insurance company itself. I would highly recommend Richard, Drew, And Nix. I worked with Jay Drew. I have used this law firm several times. And has always been so professional

If you are looking for an attorney who will stay on the phone and rack up huge bills as she commiserates with you about how awful your spouse is, Regina is not the one for you. But if you are looking for an honest, straightforward, no nonsense, effective attorney who can easily identify the issues and fight for the best possible outcome in your case, I suggest you get a therapist for the commiserating and hire Regina for your divorce! I had a particularly contentious divorce and it was a very emotional time for me. Having a flat fee removed a lot of stress from the process since I didn’t have to worry about how much money I would have to pay each month. This is very helpful, especially when you have a spouse who enjoys using the divorce process and the court system as a way to punish you. Regina was able to cut through the emotional aspects and lay everything out on the table so I could make the best decisions. The majority of my communication with her was done by email. Don’t expect daily calls or emails, but Regina will reach out when she needs something from you or if there is an update. And, rest assured, even though you may not hear from her, she is definitely working hard on your behalf. Any questions I had were normally answered the same day. Her paralegal, Krista, is also amazing to work with. Divorce is never easy and no one really wins in the process. As the responsible spouse who saved and had the majority of the assets, I had a lot to lose. While I was not happy to have to give up anything in a marriage of only two years, as I look back on the experience, I realize that the outcome could have been far, far worse for me. I was able to hold onto what I wanted most which was my home, and my 401K and investments remained in tact. In the grand scheme of things, my settlement was a small price to pay for the opportunity to start over. I highly recommend Regina Edwards. Thanks, Regina, for everything!

I feel that Chris takes on more than he should and does not allot the appropriate focus needed in certain matters. Several request I made in working with Chris on 2 cases went completely unanswered, most others I would have to ask for more than once. Several administrative mishaps with both cases ranging from mistakes on documents, misunderstanding of court information by his office, and not being made aware of rate increases between the two cases. A lot of promises were made that were never followed through with. Very unpleasant experience.

JoAnna J. Smith, who is a Family Law Attorney, Mediator, and Guardian Ad Litem, who works for this firm, was our mediator during the divorce proceedings in June 2024. I did not want to review the law firm itself, just the individual, Ms. JoAnna J. Smith, but, I did not see an option in Google review to add a review just for this individual, thus, I will apologize in advance. In the Mediation agreement both parties signed, and what I have been informed in regard to the responsibilities of a mediator, they are supposed to be unbiased. Which means, what was said and volunteered by the other party, should not have had any effect or influence during the process, nor should JoAnna have tried to persuade myself and my attorney to make decisions that was not best for myself. I also volunteered information as to what I have been through prior to the divorce and what was taken from me, emotionally and financially, etc, but JoAnna was still prejudicial against me. It was very clear to myself and even my attorney agreed by making a statement, "after all my years as an attorney, I've never heard a mediator being blatantly biased," which JoAnna seemed very vocal in siding with the 'Respondent,' as I was the 'Petitioner.' During this time, my attorney should have asked her to recuse herself from this mediation and ask for another mediator, which I would have been willing to pay extra money if we needed another mediator, but, that was not the case. In the Mediation agreement, the mediator is not supposed to 'give any legal advise,' she verbally stated to the Petitioner that it was not a good option for the Respondent to either re-fi the house, nor sell the house, nor Heloc a loan and stated the Respondent does not have the funds and should not proceed with anyone of these options. As the Petitioner, I was not asking a lot of money, but, that did not seem to matter with JoAnna. JoAnna explained the process of Heloc a loan, and we wanted to pursue other avenues, but she was sounding like the Respondent's lawyer. Yes, I agree my attorney should have strongly voiced other avenues to benefit myself, but, since he heard how blatantly the mediator was biased, he should have also asked her to recuse herself from this mediation. Divorce is hard enough, and having professional people that are supposed to be unbiased, was tougher for me through the divorce proceedings and I felt like JoAnna didn't care what I had been through, and she showed it by vocalizing her opinion and her 'legal advise.'

We had the recent good fortune to meet Suzanne when my Aunt died, as she had worked up her will with Suzanne. We were having a difficult time dealing with everything for all of the usual reasons, but every time we met with Suzanne we left feeling informed and secure that we were in good hands. Suzanne was professional, very knowledgable, and helped us to understand the process ahead of us. She was careful to inform us of, and explain any options that we had available to us, including the possible consequences of different choices. Suzanne was extremely patient with our many, many questions, and careful process of working things through, and we felt that we could speak very directly with her, and receive the same in response. Her compassion and good sense of humor, much appreciated in the situation, was an extra bonus, and I felt like I was dealing with a friend when working with her. Given that we were out of state, we had to do a lot of communication by email, and I have never before had someone respond so quickly to my questions. Suzanne went above and beyond helping us with everything that we needed, and was a pleasure to work with. We keep trying to talk her into moving to our state so we could have a lawyer that we both trust and like, but she has, unfortunately for us, declined the invitation. We highly recommend Suzanne to anyone needing legal help.

I had to have my dad's estate probated and I don't live in GA. Having Robert Turner as my attorney put my mind at ease. I appreciate that I never talked to his secretary or paralegal; I always communicated with him. Sometimes that meant I had to wait for him to get back from court but I was ok with that. He is very knowledgeable and patient explaining things. If I ever need legal assistance again, I will contact Mr. Turner. If he can't help me, I would trust his recommendation.

I hired Brad Macdonald and his team after speaking with many attorneys to handle my divorce. From my first meeting with Brad, I felt confident leaving his office and hiring him as I felt like I had a plan in place. My divorce was by no means simple and was quite multifaceted. Brad handled every twist and turn with ease and with a smile on his face. The divorce decree handed down by the courts exceeded my expectations. I recommend Brad to everyone and will continue to do so until he retires. His team treated me like family and fought tooth and nail to protect my children and I during my proceedings and even after.

David guided our family with Medicaid qualification for my sister who suffered a traumatic brain injury and other physical injuries in a traffic accident and could no longer live alone. We were referred to him by a judge who goes to our church. We were directed by hospital social workers to apply for Medicaid but denied. No one at the Department of Family Services helped except to talk about food stamps. In our first meeting with David, he knew exactly why the Medicaid was denied and immediately guided us to Medicaid programs that could allow my sister to live at home with caregiver assistance covered by Medicaid. We wasted valuable time speaking with other lawyers who kept pointing us in the wrong direction. We learned that Medicaid is more complicated then we were first told but he and his staff couldn't be more helpful. It was a year long process because of waiting lists. Had we first started with David rather then another attorney, we could have qualified sooner.

Nancy was hired to do a quiet claim deed on property purchased at a tax sale. She told me that she does this type work. She was hired and given a retainer in June 2016. By August 2016 nothing had been done and it took me calling the office repeatedly to get a response. She did complete a search for heirs to property in October 2019 and sent one letter, but only because I called several times to get her moving. She sent a letter to the heirs and never followed up. I guess she had my money and then did not have time to do the work. I have hired another attorney.

I am incredibly grateful for the guidance and the total experience I benefited from with attorney Andrea Conarro and paralegal Debbie. A divorce case, my biggest fear was becoming emotionally irrational and losing sight of my one goal which was to just extricate myself from a person. I also knew there was plenty of potential to get upset and go off track. A lot of attorneys “know the law” but I would certainly question the ethics of some. For example, the soon-to-be ex’s attorney called me whereupon I immediately and politely informed him that I had representation with Ms Conarro (which he said he understood). About two hours later he called again. I was polite again but it was easy to assume the second call wasn’t a mistake as he claimed. With a case that should have been easily processed mutually this was the reason I knew I needed a formidable attorney. I did want someone professionally competent (of course) but just as strongly ethically-guided as well. My best hopes were immediately confirmed as such throughout via phone conversations, the initial consultation (Ms Conarro has a very striking and confident presence) and emails, and all of the other legal machinations. Andrea kept me on point throughout (even when I was ready to do otherwise!) while rationally and assuringly guiding my expectations. If you seek fairness and want to avoid partnering with the slimy, my experience with Andrea is one purely rooted in doing what is fair and honorably right, the first time, and the right way always. Btw, I wasn’t aware beforehand but Andrea admirably does a lot with her personal time for the community here.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.
