Worst definition of professionalism I have ever seen in my entire life. This so called "attorney" had not contacted me over 2 months before my court date for my children. Unfortunately I trusted his ethics and work that he had everything taken care of and that was a HUGE mistake. I finally decided to contact him a week before my court date to find out that he decided he was not "mentally and medically " prepared to take family court style cases leaving me to push this court date back even further than it already had been. If you are relying on this man, think again . It may be the worst mistake you ever made as well . He obviously can't handle life nor a business. Poorest excuse for an attorney I have ever seen .

The team at RMRK provided us with the absolute best experience possible through a bad situation. They were extremely professional and well organized and explained all aspects of the legal strategy and process that we were going through. They were very fair to work with and obtained the best outcome for our family. We would highly recommend them to others and would work with them again in the future if needed.

I went to this law firm and asked if they had a criminal attorney. I found myself at 56 years old needing a criminal attorney because of a lie from an ex-girlfriend. I went in the receptionist said yes we have a criminal attorney that works for us. His name is Randy Fisher. Met me on a Sunday charge me $5000 flat rate I paid him in cash. I was short $460. They let me know within three days that I owe them more money. It wasn’t quite 5000 in cash. I immediately went in and paid it. Eight weeks later I was arrested while he was my lawyer and he told me I had nothing to worry about. I hadn’t seen my ex in 12 weeks. Randy Fisher told me I did not need to be at my first pre-trial that he would handle it. He then called me right after court started and said you need to be here. I was wrong. The Jud said you have to be here so I raced to the courthouse. By the time I got there, it was all over and talk to me outside the courts The next five pre-trials Randy postponed Because he had other clients that he had to deal with, he told me he was out of state during free trial On the fifth one, they denied the continuance on the fifth trial that he tried to postpone while he was in Disneyland with his Family He called me on the phone and told me I had a warrant for my arrest and it was his fault and he would take care of it not to go home until he called Then put me up in a hotel, which he paid for While in the hotel, he was on the phone with me pissed off that the courts denied his request after five other pre-trial extensions Because of him not me, I wanted this over with I am immediately Went and hired another attorney and had to spend $10,000 I told Mr. Randy Fisher that I hired another attorney. He got pissed off at me and charged me 5000 more dollars for him to stay on his attorney and he had to be lead attorney. Seems like he was more worried about being Tony then being my attorney and doing his job instead of postponing everything that came my way while he handled his NFL clients I went to his office at least five times complaining, but I didn’t think he was being a good attorney for me They told me that he doesn’t actually work for their company, but that is not what they told me when I went in. They had a criminal attorney. On Staff I went in and complained to the receptionist many times she said Randy kind of flies by the seat of his pants, but he’s got you Randy Fisher damn they got me killed in my front yard when the police came to arrest me after he said he had everything taken care of with the DA his words exactly I would never recommend this. They don’t what they say. They double their charges in the middle Of the case after giving you a flat rate. Then they his office did nothing but make excuses for Randy Fisher I’m putting this out there so nobody else gets screwed over by this company What cinnamon over within a year has now dragged to three years because for one year and 9 1/2 months all he did was continue continue continue telling me time was on my side Randy Fisher‘s words exactly Then he told me because they held me at gunpoint at my front yard. I would become a millionaire by suing the police How inaccurate he was again Also, I go to Michigan, Michigan, Michigan a lot I have a boat he told me not to ask for permission just to go and don’t get in any trouble. My second attorney I hired told me don’t ever leave the state again without the courts permission. He then asked the court if I could go to Michigan, my second attorney did and they said absolutely not. Mr. Johnson is not to be out of this state Randy told me I did not have to ask the courts permission. It’s easier to ask forgiveness than ask permission his words exactly. He. Let me go seven times to Michigan when that could’ve been a prison sentence itself. I highly don’t recommend this company They did nothing to help me. My second attorney had everything taken care of within 30 days of hiring him Randy two years nothing but continuances until they finally started denying his continuance because he asked for so many so he could handle his nfl Clie

Absolutely the WORST in Kosciusko. Felt ill advised; almost 'bullied' into agreements that were not in my best interest. When expressing concerns I was constantly made to feel belittled and unheard. Truly heartbroken! The negative outcome of this proceeding not only affectd me, but also my child. This was an Awful investment of not only time & money but of faith in representation. Complete with a total lack of professional compassion, im silently questioning..'whose side were they really on? Thank you JAY RIGDON for firing yourself.

I deleted my old review because I forgot how badly they messed up. I was reminded after my parents passed and had to deal with the mess they made. Their incompetence is costly both in time and money. They don’t return calls or emails, the lawyer will not be present at the signing, and they will not assist you with their work afterwards. Don’t trust them when they say “your CPA should stay in their lane”, make sure they are present in all discussions, as Amy will claim "that she a lawyer not a financial advisor" when their plan is poorly executed.

Maria matters represented my X-wife in divorce proceedings. I almost felt sorry for my x with her choice of attorney. Notice I said ALMOST. She’s incompetent at practicing law and loves to tell you what you want to hear. I wouldn’t recommend her to represent anyone in traffic court much less anything of substance. Update 9/2024 - I'm increasing my review to 5 stars. It did take them about 7 months to contact me, which was frustrating. (I know they must have an insanely high case load and are running low on staff...so I do get that.) Ultimately they followed through and when I met with an attorney I was treated with the upmost kindness and respect. That meant everything to me. Truly, thank you so so much! Update 8/2024 - I did hear back from them so I am deeply grateful for that. I'm increasing my stars based upon the fact that they did follow through. I will increase my stars further once paperwork is filed. I totally empathize with how inundated they must be - I just wish communication was better during the process. They sent me a letter in January 2024 stating they would take my case. I turned in everything they asked of me. It's now July 2024, and I still haven't heard anything back despite 20+ calls to them. They have not returned a single phone call of mine in 6 months. Not one. I'm happy to increase my stars if I ever hear back from them and they actually do what they said they would do.

I made the mistake of hiring Mr. Haacker and paying up front. It has repeatedly taken weeks to get a response to questions and then only after I send multiple emails to he and his assistant. This week he cancelled a scheduled hearing the afternoon before (this was the second postponement he initiated) and I still have not heard from him as to why although his assistant said he would try to call me more than 2 days ago.

Brett has helped us with several legal issues and, more recently, has given us outstanding counsel with regard to our retirement and estate planning. We are aware of his extensive service and we believe our assets are better protected since he is uniquely interested in the needs of seniors. We have always been both pleased and satisfied with the advice Brett has given us and, because of that, are comfortable with the decisions we have made.

I’m surprised to see so many positive reviews to be honest. I felt over charged and had a more similar experience to Kay’s. I didn’t feel like things happened in a timely manner due to no fault of my own and how she dealt with those delays was not to my liking. She was definitely not proactive when it came to that. I was expecting a decent refund because what started out as a potential difficult divorce turned into an uncontested one with no issues whatsoever. So to be charged the majority of my retainer was very much surprising. In fact, had I not complained about the last in office visit, where I originally would have been charged additional time of her apologizing for how things went and discussing cases not related to mine, I would have owed additional money. My attempt to get resolution and a larger refund was met with what appears to be a scare tactic that I would hear from her own attorney. I never once heard anything more from anyone and that was almost a year ago. I was very disappointed to say the least and still upset after all this time. So wanted to share my disastrous experience so others would be aware. I for one wish I would have paid more attention to the one negative review at the time.

I have/had been a client of Chris for almost four years. In all this time he had been compliant in filing most things. Though he was observant and tactful and knew the respective judicial body—which is helpful for most matters—I would characterize him as unanticipating and not too creative. I have a couple of OWIs(20yrs separate) but was immediately called out for currently being a drunk—not my favorite thing. Otherwise, he is a semipro, knows the local circuit, can get small meaningful things done and hold up his hand of conversation with the locals. For anything above a minor dalliance with the law or if you might have a meaningful case with child custody or visitation—I’d personally look elsewhere. Again I had to spark Mr Smith into action on my behalf several times, then provide him with the necessary legal arguments(not my specialty). After the first time or two, I began to sorrow on Mr Smith, then began to ask about alternative strategies. I had always paid my bill and always would but then he wouldn’t file a contempt motion until the previous month was paid—after three years of paid bills. Nevertheless I paid the bill and asked about the contempt motion. It was never heard in a courtroom, just behind closed doors. 30 days later still no visitation and still no progress I call again for a new motion. I beg holler and plead….again same thing no difference. Can you please pay last months bill and by the way—what do you want me to say??? Wow. Again? I make my case to my own lawyer again, this time and only after more money wants to file a new motion Though—he’s not sure what he would say…?? Wow. Thanks so much lesson learned enough. After speaking with Mr Smith, reviewing the casework and what not, I’d also carefully review the billing to be sure the billing clerk got things down correctly as a few minute talk with the judge got marked down as an 1.4 hour bill. The bills are erratic, not made out on the day or for the amount of time you spent so please watch those as well. Not a bad lawyer. Just uncreative, can’t create his own arguments, might be a bit presumptuous that you or any client is a looser, definitely a part of the small town system, and definitely knows the police, sheriffs, prosecutors, and all the people anyone would that worked a small town would for twenty years. Does that make him a good lawyer? Can he help out with some minor stuff here and there? Do you want him when your family and your right to see your own kids is on the line?

Simple divorce ended up costing wayyyy more than quoted. Charges $21.50 everytime I had to asked what was going on with my case. Communication was not good. Frustrating experience. Never returns phone calls. $20 consultation fee is extremely petty. Would not recommend.

I had Jon Rodgers as an appointed GAL just this year. He is not reachable and billing showed that he took multiple calls from the other party. My lawyer couldn't get through to him either. The entire process felt as if it was just a file that laid on his desk and the father was already going to take the hit. The report was filled with more accusations from the other party than professional input and painted a blatant bias against me. Notably, the report was made without Jon ever stepping out of his office to conduct a proper/honest investigation. None of my contacts were reached out to to discuss outside point of views regarding our case. I will admit that I didn't make a payment at the end in hopes that I could speak to Jon, but all attempts were a failure. After that a payment was made to end that cycle and even after; Jon would not speak to me to discuss a new GAL report and was honestly extremely rude. If you're a father looking to get an honest GAL report done that will show your potential, I would steer very far in the opposite direction from Jon Rodgers. I would give no star but it isn't an option.

What an Elder Law Lawyer Can Do for You

An elder law lawyer specializes in legal issues that affect older adults, their families, and caregivers. These lawyers handle a broad range of topics, including estate planning, Medicaid and Medicare, long-term care planning, guardianship, elder abuse, and retirement planning. The goal of an elder law lawyer is to protect the rights, finances, and well-being of elderly individuals and to help them plan for future healthcare and financial security.

If you or a loved one is aging and facing challenges related to healthcare, finances, or legal matters, an elder law lawyer can provide essential guidance to protect your rights and interests as you age.

When Should I Hire an Elder Law Lawyer?

Hiring an elder law lawyer can be beneficial in many situations where older adults need help with legal, financial, or healthcare-related decisions. Common reasons to hire an elder law lawyer include:

  • Estate planning: If you want to create or update a will, set up trusts, or ensure that your assets are distributed according to your wishes, an elder law lawyer can help with comprehensive estate planning.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: If you need help qualifying for Medicaid to cover long-term care or need advice on navigating Medicare benefits, a lawyer can guide you through the application process and protect your assets.
  • Long-term care planning: If you’re concerned about paying for nursing home care or assisted living, a lawyer can help you create a financial plan and explore options for government assistance.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If a family member is unable to make decisions due to age-related cognitive issues, an elder law lawyer can assist in setting up legal guardianship or conservatorship to ensure their care.
  • Elder abuse and exploitation: If you or a loved one is experiencing physical, emotional, or financial abuse, an elder law lawyer can help you take legal action to stop the abuse and recover damages.
  • Retirement planning: Elder law lawyers can assist with planning for retirement, including managing pensions, Social Security, and other retirement income.
  • Special needs planning: If you have a disabled family member who requires special care, an elder law lawyer can help create trusts or other legal arrangements to ensure their long-term financial and healthcare needs are met.

What Does an Elder Law Lawyer Do?

An elder law lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help older adults and their families navigate the complexities of aging, healthcare, and estate planning. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Drafting wills and trusts: Creating legal documents that outline how an individual’s assets will be distributed after death, ensuring that their wishes are honored.
  • Medicaid and Medicare planning: Helping clients protect their assets while qualifying for government benefits to cover healthcare and long-term care costs.
  • Establishing guardianships: Assisting families in setting up guardianship or conservatorship for loved ones who are unable to make decisions due to mental or physical incapacity.
  • Protecting against elder abuse: Investigating claims of elder abuse or financial exploitation and representing the victim in legal actions to stop the abuse and seek compensation.
  • Planning for long-term care: Developing strategies to cover the costs of nursing homes, assisted living, and other long-term care options without exhausting the elder’s financial resources.
  • Managing probate and estate administration: Guiding families through the probate process to ensure that the decedent’s assets are distributed according to the law and their wishes.
  • Setting up advance directives: Helping clients establish healthcare directives and powers of attorney to ensure their medical and financial decisions are carried out if they become incapacitated.

How Are Elder Law Lawyers Paid?

Elder law lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the type of legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Many elder law lawyers charge by the hour, especially for tasks such as drafting documents, handling legal disputes, or providing ongoing legal advice. Hourly rates typically range from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Flat fee: For specific tasks, such as drafting a will or setting up a trust, some lawyers charge a flat fee. This can range from $500 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the estate plan.
  • Retainer: For long-term legal representation, such as managing a trust or handling guardianship matters, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers future legal work.
  • Contingency fee: In some elder abuse or financial exploitation cases, a lawyer may work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they recover compensation for the client. This fee is typically a percentage of the settlement or damages awarded.

Be sure to discuss fees with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand how you will be billed and what the total cost of services might be.

How Much Does an Elder Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an elder law lawyer varies depending on the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estate planning: Drafting basic documents, such as a will or power of attorney, may cost between $500 and $2,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s assets and wishes.
  • Complex estate planning: Setting up more advanced estate plans, such as revocable or irrevocable trusts, Medicaid planning, or special needs trusts, can range from $2,000 to $10,000 or more.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: Legal fees for setting up guardianship or conservatorship often range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and whether disputes arise.
  • Medicaid planning: Legal fees for Medicaid planning can range from $1,500 to $10,000, depending on the level of asset protection needed and the complexity of the individual’s financial situation.

Always ask for an estimate of fees during your initial consultation to ensure you understand how much the legal services will cost.

Top Questions to Ask an Elder Law Lawyer

Before hiring an elder law lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise needed to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with elder law cases?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's estate planning, Medicaid applications, or elder abuse claims.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or a retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the best approach for my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your situation and what legal strategies the lawyer recommends.
  4. How long will the process take?
Whether it’s drafting an estate plan or setting up a guardianship, ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of the case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents should I bring to the consultation?
Ask the lawyer what documentation or information you should prepare for your consultation, such as medical records, financial statements, or prior legal documents.

How to Check the Credibility of an Elder Law Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable elder law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and experience:

  • Check their bar status: Verify with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for elder law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in elder law and have experience with cases similar to yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on elder law issues.
  • Check for certifications: Look for certifications or affiliations with organizations such as the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA), which can indicate the lawyer’s dedication to elder law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with an elder law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Existing estate planning documents: If you have a will, trust, or power of attorney in place, bring copies for the lawyer to review.
  • Financial records: Provide details of your assets, including bank accounts, investments, real estate, and retirement accounts, as well as any debts.
  • Medical information: If the case involves guardianship or Medicaid planning, bring relevant medical records that detail the individual's health condition and care needs.
  • Insurance policies: Bring information about health insurance, long-term care insurance, and any other relevant policies.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about your legal needs, the process, and the lawyer’s fees.
  • List of family members or beneficiaries: Prepare a list of the individuals you want to include in your estate plan or who will be affected by the legal process.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and receive the best legal advice tailored to your needs.
