We contacted Greg as we needed his expertise on an issue we encountered recently. I was not a client of Greg's and was calling off the cuff. He was more than gracious with his time and provided us with valuable advise. We spoke for quite some time and he informed me of my options and course of action. He was very knowledgeable and personable. It was an absolute pleasure to have called him. I can tell he really cares about his clients as he spent time to speak with a total stranger in need of advise. If he cares this much about someone that is not a client, I can only imagine what he would do for his clients. If I need further consultation with him, I would not hesitate to contact him in a second. Thanks again Greg for your help.

I am one of those who was hit by the economic downturn and faced losing my home. I had many a sleepless night and my marriage suffered from the stress. I had received a notice of trustee sale after wasting time with the so-called foreclosure help agencies and waiting in long lines at big venue save-your-home events. I contacted Mr. Schrader to discuss options. I needed to file bankruptcy. His advice was concise and his rates were fair. I could not believe how he hustled around to meet with me and make sure paperwork was completed accurately and submitted on time. I felt that I had finally found someone who sincerely cared about my situation and was ready and willing to do what it took to keep me in my home. I was finally able to rest peacefully at night. Mr. Schrader never missed an appointment, was never late, was always calm and collected and explained everything to me as we went through the bankruptcy process. Working with Link Schrader was like working with a friend, not an attorney whom I had never met before. He helped me save my home, I am back on track and couldn't be more pleased. I consider myself extremely fortunate to have found Mr. Schrader.

We have had the pleasure of having Elizabeth Ritter represent us in a guardianship case in the Barstow courts. We are grandparents who were not knowlegeable about the laws around 'guardianship' and found Ms. Ritter advice and professionalism (both to us and in the court) better than we could have anticipated. Ms. Ritter was very approachable and answered all our inquiries honestly. We found Ms. Ritter to be very forthright with information and guidance during a difficult and long process. Ms. Ritter brings a wealth of knowledge, compassion, and understanding. We are sorry that we had to switch attorneys, but circumstances changed and we had to change courts. Should we ever have to be heard in this region again, we would never hesitate to ask Ms. Ritter to represent us. We cannot thank her enough for her guidance over the years. Ms. Ritter comes with the highest recommendation from us, in areas of professionalism, knowledge, honesty, compassion, and integrity.

Scott has been very competent, compassionate, and efficient. He wants to be helpful and he's made sure I understand the legal portion of my case whenever I have contact with him. No question is stupid, or ignored. I really liked the fact that he wasn't afraid to admit he needed to verify some things before he could answer. He's very detailed and made sure all the i's were dotted, and t's were crossed so there was no delay. My biggest relief was his compassionate and human approach to my situation. I didn't feel like I was 'just a case number' as is rumored most attorneys treat their clients.

I got a speeding ticket recently as I was traveling on I8 headed Eastbound on my way to Arizona. I live in San Diego so this was a major inconvenience. I searched diligently for attorneys in the El Centro area and found Andrew Williams. He was very personable and I appreciated how he took the time to answer all my questions. He went to court 3 times on my behalf since the judge kept continuing the case (the officer wasn’t cooperating with the declaration process). Andrew’s knowledge of general principles as well as subtle details is stellar. He is very organized and approached the case in a systematic way which would catch even the best prosecutor off guard. His overall technique was flawless which led him the win the case! If you need a great attorney, I highly recommend Andrew Williams.

Bethany Ward thank you, and my family thanks you for all of the hard work and time that you put into our case. When we thought we didn't not have any other way to win Bethany Ward stepped in and made our case in a way that we could not express on our own. She was able to relay to the Judge how our rights were being violated and made our case valid and unjust in the eyes of the court. Thanks to her we won the day, and her hard work, dedication and loyalty are the only reason we won.

I'd been to another lawyer's office to attempt my bankruptcy, they put me with a paralegal who stuck some numbers in a spreadsheet and said I could only qualify for chapter 13 with huge monthly payments. Shareen looked at my situation as a whole, and was able to help me file chapter 7! It was great to work with someone who has the knowledge and was willing to take the time to advise me on the best way to proceed in MY situation. She handled my divorce as well, and now I am ready to start fresh! What I expected to be difficult and stressful, she made easy!

She was able to mediate and break through to my ex where all else had failed before. A very good person and attorney. I don't recommend many people and am highly critical as a person. I have only good things to say about Jennifer.

I have had the opportunity to study Business Law Today with Professor Cary Phu Pham, who is also a lawyer, during the past Spring 2015 Semester. He is really a very knowledgeable professor who had guided our class to go through the whole semester with interesting subjects that are very useful for our daily lives even though we don't practice law. The knowledge we gathered from Professor Phu helps enhance our knowledge that we can carry out when it comes to applying to the cases relevant to our interests.

I was referred to Cara by my foster son's attorney and she represented me in his dependency case. I can't say enough about her. She's super impressive and efficient! She is very responsive and gave me the play by play via text while in court. She was able to move my case forward from termination of services, to termination of parental rights, and towards adoption which I hope will happen by spring. She is no-nonsense type person and has good relationships with the attorneys on the dependency floor in Santa Ana. She is literally in those court rooms every day and is familiar with each judge as well. I'm so glad I didn't bring an outsider in. She works on a single, very reasonable retainer to take families all the way to adoption so you don't have to deal with expenses getting out of hand.

Mrs. Forgo is a highly knowledgeable and qualified attorney in child support issues. As a staff attorney for the County of Los Angeles, Department of Child Support Services and a Supervising attorney for the County of San Bernardino, Child Support Service, she has direct work experience of internal policies and procedures, as well as professional interactions with the presiding judges. She was able to meet with me promptly to review my child support case. She explained to me with expert detail the summons, the documentation requested of me and the other party, the court proceeding, the demeanor of the judges and the options provided by the County. She walked me through each step to ensure my level of understanding was through. I would highly recommend Mrs. Forgo or anyone of her associates.

I was recommended to see George by a friend who's family has used him for legal advice and assistance in administrating many estates, trusts, etc. George is professional, courteous, and makes no issue with telling you how it is. My personal case forced him to deal with one of my family members who was filing frivolous claims and unjustly contesting work he and I had done. It was one of the most bizarre time consuming experiences I have ever had and George was there to assist me the whole way through. He gives advice and makes sure you are adequately informed, but never blurs the notion that he is an employee and you are the client. Ultimately, everything is your decision if you hire him. His receptionist is awesome and even listened to me complain at times when I didn't understand what was going on. It made me feel like I wasn't going alone through the situation and that I had a team to support me. I have recommended him to others and will continue to. He's one of the those rare attorneys who does good work for a fair price. He will never do unneeded work to soak up money; this is a private practice so he doesn't need to bill hours. When working with a trust, this is important because the funds are finite. Thank you George and if you didn't already get this from my review, I HIGHLY recommend George Alspaugh.

Mr. McGill used his knowledge of the law to help me circumvent legal and ethical barriers to rewrite my elderly girlfriend’s Trust and estate documents. His network of associates helped me obfuscate my intentions so I have successfully taken control of assets that were intended for her members of her family. I used her funds to essentially put myself in control of her life and no one can do anything about it. If you seek revenge on those more successful than yourself, look no further than Edmond McGill. Revenge is not only on the menu, it is all that is served.

Hiring Matthew Long was the best decision I could have made. After consulting with several other attorneys, I found Matthew to be the most knowledgeable, professional and of the highest integrity in his dealings with me. My divorce has been an emotional roller coaster and complicated by real estate holdings and a business that is community property but under my spouse's control. Matthew knows what questions to ask, what information needs to be uncovered and has been extremely responsive, thoughtful and compassionate.

What an Estate Planning Lawyer Can Do for You

An estate planning lawyer helps individuals plan for the management and distribution of their assets after death or during incapacitation. Their services involve drafting important legal documents, such as wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives. Estate planning attorneys work to ensure that your assets are transferred according to your wishes, minimize tax liabilities, and avoid probate court. They also help clients plan for potential long-term care needs and protect their estate from being diminished by healthcare costs.

By working with an estate planning lawyer, you can have peace of mind knowing that your loved ones will be cared for and that your estate will be managed efficiently and according to your desires.

When Should I Hire an Estate Planning Lawyer?

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is beneficial in many situations, especially when you want to ensure that your assets are handled properly after death. Common reasons to hire an estate planning lawyer include:

  • Drafting a will: If you want to clearly define how your assets will be distributed after death, an attorney can draft a legally sound will.
  • Creating a trust: For those looking to avoid probate or provide for loved ones over time, setting up a trust can help manage the distribution of assets.
  • Planning for incapacity: An estate lawyer can help draft powers of attorney and healthcare directives so that your financial and medical decisions are made by someone you trust if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimizing estate taxes: If your estate is large, a lawyer can help create strategies to reduce or eliminate federal and state estate taxes.
  • Special circumstances: If you have minor children, blended families, or complex assets like businesses, an estate planning lawyer can create tailored solutions.
  • Guardianship or conservatorship: If you want to designate guardians for minor children or ensure proper care for incapacitated adults, an attorney can help.

Hiring an estate planning lawyer is especially important if your estate is complex or if you want to ensure that your wishes are properly followed.

What Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Do?

An estate planning lawyer provides a range of services designed to help you organize your affairs and ensure your estate is managed according to your wishes. They can:

  • Draft wills and trusts: Creating legally binding documents that dictate how your assets will be distributed and managed.
  • Create powers of attorney and healthcare directives: Appointing someone to make financial or medical decisions for you if you become incapacitated.
  • Minimize taxes: Developing strategies to reduce estate taxes, gift taxes, and other financial liabilities for your heirs.
  • Help avoid probate: Structuring your estate plan to avoid probate, which can save time and money for your beneficiaries.
  • Advise on long-term care planning: Helping you plan for potential healthcare needs in the future, including Medicaid planning and protecting assets from being depleted by nursing home costs.
  • Assist with beneficiary designations: Ensuring that life insurance policies, retirement accounts, and other financial instruments are correctly designated.
  • Handle probate and estate administration: If a loved one has passed away, an estate planning lawyer can help guide you through the probate process or act as an executor.

How Are Estate Planning Lawyers Paid?

Estate planning lawyers typically charge for their services in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of your estate and the type of services you need. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many estate planning services, such as drafting a will or trust, are charged on a flat-fee basis. The fee covers all work related to preparing the document.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex planning, such as estate tax strategy or trust administration, lawyers may charge by the hour. Rates vary based on the lawyer’s experience and location.
  • Retainer: Some lawyers require a retainer for more complex cases, such as ongoing trust management or estate administration. The retainer is an upfront payment that covers future legal services.

It’s important to discuss fees with your lawyer upfront to avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does an Estate Planning Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an estate planning lawyer depends on the complexity of your estate and the services you require. Here are some general guidelines:

  • Simple wills or powers of attorney: A straightforward will or power of attorney may cost between $300 and $1,500, depending on your location and the lawyer’s experience.
  • Trust creation: Establishing a trust, such as a living trust or revocable trust, can cost between $1,000 and $3,000 or more, depending on the complexity of your assets and estate planning needs.
  • Comprehensive estate planning packages: Some lawyers offer packages that include wills, trusts, powers of attorney, and healthcare directives, which may range from $2,000 to $5,000 or more, depending on the estate’s complexity.
  • Hourly rates: For ongoing services like estate administration or tax planning, lawyers may charge hourly rates ranging from $150 to $500 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience.

Always get a clear estimate of costs during your initial consultation to ensure the services fit within your budget.

Top Questions to Ask an Estate Planning Lawyer

Before hiring an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to ask questions to ensure they are the right fit for your needs. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What is your experience with estate planning?
Ensure the lawyer has substantial experience drafting wills, creating trusts, and handling other estate planning services.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee or by the hour and ask for a detailed estimate of costs.
  3. What strategies do you recommend for my estate?
A good lawyer should be able to explain the best strategies for minimizing taxes, avoiding probate, and ensuring your assets are distributed according to your wishes.
  4. How often should I update my estate plan?
Ask how frequently you should revisit your estate plan, especially if your financial situation or family dynamics change.
  5. Do you offer ongoing support or updates?
Some lawyers provide periodic reviews or updates to ensure your estate plan stays current with changes in your circumstances or the law.
  6. How will you help my beneficiaries if something happens to me?
Ensure the lawyer is willing to guide your heirs through the estate administration process or help manage your trust after you’re gone.

How to Check the Credibility of an Estate Planning Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a credible estate planning lawyer, follow these steps:

  • Verify their state bar license: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed and in good standing, with no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for estate planning certifications: Some lawyers are certified as estate planning specialists, which indicates they have extensive knowledge in this area of law.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Online reviews on sites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell can provide insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and client satisfaction.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from previous clients who can speak to their expertise and client service.
  • Check for membership in professional organizations: Lawyers who are members of organizations like the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) or the American College of Trust and Estate Counsel (ACTEC) often have a strong reputation in the field.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first meeting with an estate planning lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • List of assets and liabilities: Provide a detailed inventory of your assets, including real estate, bank accounts, retirement funds, investments, and personal property, as well as any debts you may have.
  • List of beneficiaries: Be ready to discuss who you want to receive your assets and in what proportions. This includes naming guardians for minor children if applicable.
  • Existing estate documents: Bring copies of any existing wills, trusts, powers of attorney, or other relevant estate planning documents.
  • Questions about your estate goals: Write down your goals, such as avoiding probate, reducing taxes, or setting up charitable donations, so your lawyer can tailor a plan to meet your needs.
  • Information on medical and financial decision-makers: Be prepared to discuss who you want to appoint for healthcare and financial decisions if you become incapacitated.

By being well-prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and begin building a comprehensive estate plan that meets your needs and protects your loved ones.
