I paid Greg Sisco to fight for custody of my daughter in court. While waiting for the judge to call our case he was bad mouthing the other lawyer and client, using explicit language. While most lawyers are looking over their cases Greg was playing games on his cellphone. Greg acted overly confident that we wouldn’t have trouble in the child custody case but when he stood before the judge he did not know what to say and took no legal stand against opposing counsel. I lost custody of my daughter after been granted years of sold custody. After court he said nothing could be done and reprimanded me for what the opposing counsel presented to the judge and said to get my life together. Opposing counsel couldn’t even get a hold of Greg on a meeting in the judges quarters, I had to let him know. Greg showed up to the meeting and his excuse for not doing his job was that the judge wouldn’t let him speak. I hired a new lawyer. Still have had no response from Greg.

Kelly Capps and her staff are dedicated to serving their clients with integrity and compassion. She was very supportive, responsive and professional to my grandson every step of the way, bringing him through a very difficult time in his life. She was able to negotiate a satisfactory outcome for his situation. I was so pleased, I have personally recommended her to several friends, who also received better than then expected results.

I foolishly agreed to process my divorce in Austin, TX where my ex was living and compounded my foolishness by hiring Ms. Capps to represent me. Weeks and weeks would go by and I would not hear from her except to receive bills from her office. Ms. Capps was so enamored with my ex's attorney, that whatever crap he put forward was okay with her. Then she had me hire a very expensive person to evaluate my ex's business value and he knew nothing about that specific business! I ended up negotiating my own settlement with my ex. I will admit that it was a very emotional time for me and I got zero empathy from Ms. Capps. I had worked for law firms in the past and I know many attorneys, but Ms. Capps brings shame on the profession.

Would give her zero stars if I could. Judith was an appointed lawyer to me and my first and only phone call with her was absolutely horrible. She speaks with her clients extremely disrespectfully, makes you feel like you’re an awful person, and yells at you. I wouldn’t even consider paying for her services. I requested a new lawyer. I was scared to lose my children after a particularly nasty divorce and ensuing legal issues. I am covered in tattoos, I have a horrible criminal record. Ms. Bohr is passionate about her work, and well versed in court. I was impressed when she won the first case. A year later my world collapsed and I found myself in need of a miracle. Then came Judith Bohr again to the rescue. She worked tirelessly for almost a year. I honestly thought there was no way for me to win. Against all odds Judith Bohr argued on my behalf and won a 2nd time. I have been happily home with my children since. I owe her a lot. She is a miracle worker with the best of the best intentions. Im eternally grateful and would recommend 10/10.

I hired Paul as a pro-bono attorney many years ago. He was never prepared for our case, did not present the evidence I provided, showed up in a suit stained and extremely wrinkled and did not put any effort into my case. He just wanted the $500 I gave him but did not put even the slightest effort into my case. He is not a good attorney, nor does he seem to have any basic understanding of how his lack of effort affects people's lives. His is not worth a dime, so do not hire him. He is easily the worst attorney you could hire for your case.

I first worked with Paul on a rental issue and I found him to be extremely honesty and helpful. He was also very fair in his pricing, which was important since I was a student at the time. I later came back to his practice for help with consumer protection where he helped advise my elderly father on a potential predatory real estate scheme. I don’t think you could find a more empathetic, fair, and honest lawyer.

No stars being given here! Not even ONE! This law firm single handedly was so ill prepared for my court hearing that it resulted in the judge's asking for "clarification" on why my ex should owe the debt that he rolled into my separate property house. Luther's response: "Uhhh, uhhhh, well... if we don't ask for it, we won't get it!" ~~ The correct answer was completely outlined, documented, and could have been so easily proven, had Luther done even just an hour or two of due diligence (he was paid over 75K in less than six months time), but he was too busy taking 32 of his collegues, attorney friends, ad litems, etc., to Europe for his "Birthday party celebration" for two weeks, prior to my trial! In short, he's not worth an hour's pay, as that is all the work he'll likely do on any case! But he sure knows how to document hours not worked! I fired him, but the damage was already done! Not able to appeal, he stalled on the return of the evidence, hid or kept important files, and generally covered his "tracks."

I hired Stephenie to represent me in a civil matter, where I was the defendant. She missed all deadlines imposed by the court and opposing counsel. She didn’t show up to hearings, where I was standing in the courthouse alone. The opposing counsel and judge actually asked me if I was still represented by Stephenie. When I approached Stephenie with her substandard job performance, despite her being on full retainer, she became hostile, defensive, and threatened to withdraw from my case. I told her not to bother, she was fired. I obtained competent counsel and the got the civil case dismissed. Do not hire this attorney.

Ms. McNamara came highly recommended to me. Ultimately, and after spending lots of money over many months, I really felt that she cared much more about her reputation in the legal community and how opposing counsel felt much more than helping me get through an awful situation in my life quickly and equitably. She had good attention to detail but ultimately failed to help me in any tangible way. We turn to attorneys to help us navigate the complex legal system and advocate for us and I did not feel I received these things even a little bit from Ms. McNamara. I was genuinely surprised at how poor my experience was given how highly recommended she was to me and how much money I wasted. Would never hire her again.

Greetings to all 💝 I would like to share my experience with Attorney Brian Bernard. I had Mr. Bernard saved in my contacts from a relative in jail that asked me to reach out to him (Brian) in June 2024. About 1 month later my son went to jail and the attorney that I initially reached out to wanted to help for the "low-low" price of $7,500 for a Class "A" misdemeanor with an initial payment of $2,500😂. I sent Brian a text message wanting to know how much should a misdemeanor charge of that nature cost. I was bracing myself for impact of his response (because I am extra broke😂) but his response pleased me. The conversation of the photo is attached💝 Brian had my son out within hours. I was relieved because as parents we want our children to do the right thing and be ok. The day was nearing for me to fly out of town for work, so I was pleased and burden lifted. Moving forward to August 2024, my Aunt called me upset and stated her son went to jail and it would cost a lot of money for the bail bonds to get him released. I instantly said "Aunty call Brian, I am sure he can help and have him released the same day for a fair price💕 " She said text me his info and I will call him (In her still hurt tone). After my aunty called Brian, she called back telling me how excited she was and I could hear it in her soul💕 Then she told me some fun facts about Brian's career from their in person meet (I paid through CashApp😊 so we did not meet in person). My aunty kept thanking me. I said Aunty we Thank God for Mr. Brian Bernard. Names to me are very important because what we are called is what we are as well as what we respond to. For example My name is Jacqueline which means "May God Protect Her" and He definitely has throughout my whole entire life💝 Brian means: High, Noble, Honor and dignity Bernard means: Brave, Hardy and strong Now look at this fair man walk in his purpose according to who and what he is called.💗💖💝💓

You are a dishonorable person. Thats why you left el paso under a cloud of shame. Even though it was a 4 hour drive there and 4 hrs back i attended every hearing for over a year and you did nothing. In 2008, I had already caught a case it was on probation. I was working as an escort on Craigslist when Mr Walter Prentice contacted me and told me he was wanting to Trade Services. I knew that I was violated on my probation because of non-payment of Child Support. So I allowed mr. Prentice to come over and speak to me about this. I explained to him that I had cases that were criminal and civil to deal with. He said he could deal with both. He has done some of what he said he would do I did everything I said I would do. Mr Prentice is totally left me hanging on this case currently going on. I turned myself in on it in January 2019 because I had some time left on it. From my understanding it was a matter of about 12 days. I sat in that jail for a month because neither Mr Prentice nor the jail let the Attorney General's office know that I was in jail. My 76 year old mother had to call and call and call until she got hold of somebody and found somebody who could speak to her on the phone and then they had me in court the next day. Mr Prentice was not there. I explained to the judge that I had done time the year before and from my understanding six months was the max that you could get after your kids turn 18. I asked the judge to run my sentence concurrent and she did and release me that day. Mr Prentice did show up to court after that on my oldest son's case. After that was handled there was one more case and he showed up for that one too. They reset it and I lost the paperwork. I am currently homeless and don't have access to any storage facility or anything like that. I have lost most of what I have. I asked Mr Prentice many times in emails about my court date and he could not answer my question. He implied that it was different because he was talking to the Attorney General's office waiting for them to call him back. Now I have another arrest warrant out for me. He is lazy doesn't do anything. He is impossible to reach. If you retain this man you will regret it.

Did not have a good experience with this lawyer. She seemed unprepared when the day of court came and was even late. She did not advise me of any potential ramifications of the route we were pursuing that the opposing counsel might use so we/I was blind-sided by the opposing counsel in court, while on the stand, which I was never prepared to even be on and shouldnt have been on. Little to no preparation and she bickered with opposing counsel in a manner that felt like junior high arguing. I was so embarrassed by her performance. Needless to say, we lost in court and my situation continued to be horrible and my relationship with my ex and their willingness to work with me further diminished. Stay away from this lawyer at all costs.

This law firm was one of the most unsatisfactory experiences I've ever had. I hired Elizabeth for a straightforward protective order case, but it took her over a month just to initiate contact with opposing counsel. Despite their claims, no communication with opposing counsel was established until opposing counsel reached out to me directly to inquire if Elizabeth would contact them. Once contact was made, it took several months for them to draft and send orders, with opposing counsel ultimately filing the orders. I have had to repeatedly request bills, statements, and payment links. During our first court hearing, I made numerous attempts to contact Elizabeth with no response. Despite firing her over a month ago and sending multiple requests for my file, she has failed to withdraw from the case and send me my file. I strongly advise against hiring this firm for your legal matters.

I hired Dario Bargas years ago. I've hesitated writing a review because not a lot of reviews were written but I check back time to time to see if I was the only one this happened to. I was in a custody battle & he took my retainer & did nothing. He asked me if I'd ever sleep wth him too, then after I sent an email asking my retainer back & that I'm going to go elsewhere - no refund! I then went and interviewed a female attorney looking for further guidance & that I had hired an attorney retained & she told me a story of his past with the law on an arrest of attempted murder. You can actually read about it on google. It's unbelievable he's practicing law & not lost his right to still represent & scam people at that. He needs to be reported & arrested for theft! He, thru the years, gets his reputation reviews cleared & clients are unaware if checking about retaining / reviewing Dario Bargas.

I sent him email after email of information involving my case...not once did he respond or assure me whether things were in our favor or not. I emailed Robert at least 3 weeks before my hearing asking him when would he like to meet. He did not respond until the last week before the hearing. This was the weekend of my daughter's birthday which happened to be on the day of my hearing....It was also the weekend of Father's Day. I suggested we meet Saturday/Sunday morning because I had no time from work and had plans for my daughter in the afternoon. Robert demanded Saturday afternoon because he had Father's day plans. Because we could not come to an agreement he withdrew from my case. He may be knowledgeable and aggressive in the courtroom, but his client relations could use some serious conditioning.

I was referred to Ms. Wheeler from another lawyer, about a child custody case involving my two daughters. 1 newborn and 1 that was at the time 2 years old. My case pretty cut and dry. The mother pretty much abandoned them and left them with me for months while she was with new boyfriend enjoying life. Ms. Rebecca Wheeler and the firm she represented was very nice and diligent at first. But, after a week or so, I could no longer reach her, via phone or email. Long story short. The way everything happened, I have suspected that she was more for the other side. As if she were paid off to throw case. Or just plainly didn't give a damn about the well being of two little children, but more concerned with making money. Not reliable, she is a talented lair and at $400/hour + expenses she is down right a thief!! She should be disbarred! RUN AWAY!!

Having researched Michael after my experience with him, including the experiences of other clients, it appears as if he makes his living by doing the absolute bare minimum required (if that). He’s handsome, charming, and very good at seeming like he cares in every regard EXCEPT actually doing his job. He would become extremely defensive and annoyed whenever questioned or pushed back on why he wasn’t doing his job. This even extended to remembering simple details, something you would expect of an attorney, but which he was very inept at. Do not hire Michael, and if the court appoints him to you, ask for another lawyer.

I have a sick wife who is an addict. Her sickness became an issue in our relationship, so i seperated from her around October 2019. Covid pandemic hit in March of 2020 and she returned to me pregnant. I cred fornher and insisted she go to rehab if not for just her sake the babies health as well. She went but still had issues with her recovery. When the time came to deliver there were issues with hospitals in Austin violating our rights so we left those institutions against medical advise. Doing so is a right that we are all afforded when we feel the care provided is inadequate and unconstitutional. Fast forward and the baby is born into a respectful institution professional and appropriate. CPS was called. I had fought off officers verbally for over a week and was emotionally and physically drained fefending my and my sick wifes rights to bear our child in any way we saw fit. CPS provided an attorneys to represent each of us. I was given this one. CPS's commissioner sent me a letter clearing me of any wrong doing. This "attorney" who claimed he was representing me would not defend my constitutional rights. He would side with the CPS in just about every matter. Being an attorney provided by the state of Texas, employed through the state of Texas, his interest and loyalties fall there. He wouldnt defend me from his own employer(the state), while misrepresenting himself as "my" attorney. If you want to be misrepresented, lied to and colluded with the opposition in your child case then by all means he is your guy. I wouldnt recommend him to represent anyone for as much as a parking ticket. Good luck to whoever uses this "attorney".

Brittany was and is to this day the worst mistake I have ever made in my life. It was insane right from the start and looking back I should have known something was wrong. First off she does not have experience in Travis County Family Court and was transplanted from Williamson County where she "says" she has lots of experience. 1) She failed to explain to me what I was signing and what It meant legally. 2) She failed to gain knowledge or advice from her team who had more experience and what I am left with is a shocking situation that looks like I was taken advantage of, to anyone that looks at my case. 3) She allowed things to happen (maybe unknowingly) that can not be reversed. Trust me, Ignorance has no bliss in this situation. I am still fighting my divorce after 2.5 years and now that I have a "real lawyer", (At a lower cost) I understand what Brittany was lacking the entire time. KNOWLEDGE and EXPERIENCE. Please do yourself and your family a favor and choose another lawyer and FIRM.

I had a broken leg. Acted like he didn't know or care. Took my Drivers license away from me and would not respond. Same result from Greg Abbott, his boss, I wrote letters, emails, called and called. Explained my problems about employment. Searched earnestly for work. Class C drivers Lic. required. Got a job and risked all my efforts to find the job and the job it's self, and the potential for them to take child support by continuing to drive illegal. No response. That's about irresponsible.

Felt overwhelmed about speaking with this attorney. I needed some legal and being from South America, it was very nerve racking trying to explain my situation to this woman. I felt ignored and patronized as though I was a child. I did not feel I could trust this persons ability in understanding and relaying my situation in court.

I placed my trust in Amy Lambert to my later regret. Among other things, when I needed a quick response she was unavailable so I had to rely on a family member who was an attorney. In hindsight the advice given was not appropriate and the results have been devastating to my family. Would not recommend.

Please do not hire Keith. He is one of the worst lawyers in Austin, Texas. He will lie to his clients that he showed up to court. He does not notify his clients to be had court. Once they get a warrant he will tell them to lay low while he sits back and try to collect the money all he want is your money he does not care about your freedom or justice. He has a very bad attitude I do not recommend him to any African-American. He has showed his true colors, and he is very disrespectful. He does not know how to communicate with his clients, his assistant better job because he has a horrible person to work for I have recorded conversations and I have every text message that we have sent to each other and it will be posted tomorrow. I am getting with the state board to hold him accountable the right way.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
