Used Philip as a divorce lawyer between my ex husband and kids. We settled on everything being 50-50 with nothing to split so it was an easy divorce. I Can never get a hold of him, he bills you if you call, the secretary never responds, and it’s been years since my divorce started and still not finalized. I’m not getting any answers why although they’ve already been paid. Don’t bother wasting your time or your money you can do it yourself much faster

hired him to assist me in a case with my daughters father where he had 2 attorneys fighting me pretty aggressively. showed up to receive my $2000.00 dollars in a waffle house shirt should've been the first sign then told me his secretary would contact me. waited 4 days never heard from either one then I finally got him on the phone and he proceeded to cuss me out for insulting him, offered to give me a refund yet only filed one motion for me. and I never heard from them again. I requested an itemized bill from them several times and to this day haven't seen one. Look I work for attorneys so I get that they are busy i understand billing especially because that is what I do for the attorneys but we talked on the phone once not even for 30 mins and he said that I needed to have better questions never sent me 1 email I shared maybe 8 emails top with his secretary. DO NOT HIRE HIM!! not to mention he told me if I was worried about my daughter being killed I needed to contact the police. BTW the attorney that was trying to assist my daughters father in getting full custody is now sitting in jail for murder of a young girl age 23.

Philip was great. He navigated the legal system efficiently for us and steered us clear of the brutal mud-slinging that characterizes many a divorce. We were fortunate to have his expertise and compassion. Highly recommended.

I highly recommend the Law Office of Vinh M. Tran, P.C. After my first accident, the team was exceptional. They clearly explained all my options and handled my case with great care, making the process stress-free. Their communication was excellent, ensuring I was fully informed every step of the way. Thanks to their thoroughness and dedication, I was made whole. I'm grateful for their support and would turn to them again if needed.

I am not his Client. My case was very complex and needed an expert opinion from a lawyer who knows Criminal, Family, and immigration. Hence I went to Vinh for an initial free consultation he offered. My experience was horrible with him. I started to give him some background and he stopped me in the middle and asked me to explain what I wanted in one line. His tone, body language, and attitude everything were very rude. It seems like since he is giving free consultation, he has the right to disrespect me. Then when I explained what I was looking for he denied providing such kind of service, which is fine. But along with that, he started judging me and giving his opinion about my personal life. I was there only for 15 minutes. He just literally told me to go away. I could have responded to him right then and there, but I controlled myself just because I didn't want to misbehave like him. I don't understand how such a horrible person becomes a lawyer.

Kelly Capps and her staff are dedicated to serving their clients with integrity and compassion. She was very supportive, responsive and professional to my grandson every step of the way, bringing him through a very difficult time in his life. She was able to negotiate a satisfactory outcome for his situation. I was so pleased, I have personally recommended her to several friends, who also received better than then expected results.

I foolishly agreed to process my divorce in Austin, TX where my ex was living and compounded my foolishness by hiring Ms. Capps to represent me. Weeks and weeks would go by and I would not hear from her except to receive bills from her office. Ms. Capps was so enamored with my ex's attorney, that whatever crap he put forward was okay with her. Then she had me hire a very expensive person to evaluate my ex's business value and he knew nothing about that specific business! I ended up negotiating my own settlement with my ex. I will admit that it was a very emotional time for me and I got zero empathy from Ms. Capps. I had worked for law firms in the past and I know many attorneys, but Ms. Capps brings shame on the profession.

She speaks with her clients extremely disrespectfully, makes you feel like you’re an awful person, and yells at you. I wouldn’t even consider paying for her services. I requested a new lawyer. I was scared to lose my children after a particularly nasty divorce and ensuing legal issues. I am covered in tattoos, I have a horrible criminal record. Ms. Bohr is passionate about her work, and well versed in court. I was impressed when she won the first case. A year later my world collapsed and I found myself in need of a miracle. Then came Judith Bohr again to the rescue. She worked tirelessly for almost a year. I honestly thought there was no way for me to win. Against all odds Judith Bohr argued on my behalf and won a 2nd time. I have been happily home with my children since. I owe her a lot. She is a miracle worker with the best of the best intentions. Im eternally grateful and would recommend 10/10.

I hired Paul as a pro-bono attorney many years ago. He was never prepared for our case, did not present the evidence I provided, showed up in a suit stained and extremely wrinkled and did not put any effort into my case. He just wanted the $500 I gave him but did not put even the slightest effort into my case. He is not a good attorney, nor does he seem to have any basic understanding of how his lack of effort affects people's lives. His is not worth a dime, so do not hire him. He is easily the worst attorney you could hire for your case.

I first worked with Paul on a rental issue and I found him to be extremely honesty and helpful. He was also very fair in his pricing, which was important since I was a student at the time. I later came back to his practice for help with consumer protection where he helped advise my elderly father on a potential predatory real estate scheme. I don’t think you could find a more empathetic, fair, and honest lawyer.

No stars being given here! Not even ONE! This law firm single handedly was so ill prepared for my court hearing that it resulted in the judge's asking for "clarification" on why my ex should owe the debt that he rolled into my separate property house. Luther's response: "Uhhh, uhhhh, well... if we don't ask for it, we won't get it!" ~~ The correct answer was completely outlined, documented, and could have been so easily proven, had Luther done even just an hour or two of due diligence (he was paid over 75K in less than six months time), but he was too busy taking 32 of his collegues, attorney friends, ad litems, etc., to Europe for his "Birthday party celebration" for two weeks, prior to my trial! In short, he's not worth an hour's pay, as that is all the work he'll likely do on any case! But he sure knows how to document hours not worked! I fired him, but the damage was already done! Not able to appeal, he stalled on the return of the evidence, hid or kept important files, and generally covered his "tracks."

I hired Stephenie to represent me in a civil matter, where I was the defendant. She missed all deadlines imposed by the court and opposing counsel. She didn’t show up to hearings, where I was standing in the courthouse alone. The opposing counsel and judge actually asked me if I was still represented by Stephenie. When I approached Stephenie with her substandard job performance, despite her being on full retainer, she became hostile, defensive, and threatened to withdraw from my case. I told her not to bother, she was fired. I obtained competent counsel and the got the civil case dismissed. Do not hire this attorney.

Ms. McNamara came highly recommended to me. Ultimately, and after spending lots of money over many months, I really felt that she cared much more about her reputation in the legal community and how opposing counsel felt much more than helping me get through an awful situation in my life quickly and equitably. She had good attention to detail but ultimately failed to help me in any tangible way. We turn to attorneys to help us navigate the complex legal system and advocate for us and I did not feel I received these things even a little bit from Ms. McNamara. I was genuinely surprised at how poor my experience was given how highly recommended she was to me and how much money I wasted. Would never hire her again.

I had the privilege of working with Bret Doyal for my child support and custody case, and I must say, his legal expertise and compassionate approach were truly remarkable. From our initial consultation to the resolution of my case, Bret demonstrated a deep understanding of family law coupled with a genuine concern for my well-being and the best interests of my child. Throughout the entire process, Bret was not only knowledgeable but also incredibly supportive. He took the time to explain every step of the legal proceedings, ensuring that I felt informed and empowered. His attention to detail and strategic approach were evident in every aspect of his representation. What truly sets Bret apart is his empathy and kindness. Dealing with matters of child support and custody can be emotionally challenging, but Bret always made me feel heard and understood. He approached my case with sensitivity and compassion, easing my anxieties and guiding me through the complexities of the legal system with grace and professionalism. Thanks to Bret's expertise and dedication, I achieved a favorable outcome in my case. I cannot recommend him highly enough to anyone in need of exceptional legal representation. Bret Doyal is not just a great lawyer; he is a compassionate advocate who truly cares about his clients' well-being.

It took me awhile in contemplation on whether or not I should write this review but seeing others' writing, I see that I owe it to myself and others to speak on Mr. Brian Bernard. I was first introduced to him by a good friend of mine who was actually upset with him that he had spent $500 on his daughter's behalf and received no service. He said he was upset with Mr. Bernard for not doing anything and he, his daughter, and his daughter's mother had reached out to him several times and Mr. Bernard became upset. They parted ways but I decided to give him a chance because I felt that any grievance over $500 is DEPLORABLE because I am a pre-law student and I understand that attorneys charge anywhere from $250 to $1000 an hour for their time. I talked this attorney for the first time last October and he was the cheapest attorney of them all. When I talked to him again this year, the price went up because I needed him to travel I was still good with it because it was 5k and it was cheap for what I needed him to do. He hastened me to get the money and said if you don't hurry, your parental rights will be terminated. Within two months, I had half of his money and a brand new apartment. I gave him the money, knowing he would not do any work without all of it. I made a good faith payment was what I called it. The first time I had ever heard him "bubbly", he called me and appointed me his paralegal. He said he would begin "making a file". For the next month, he had me collecting my own documents. The paralegal did nothing but sort them in an app. I accepted that because he didn't have to start at all ... I tried to get a loan for the rest of his money and got denied. The loan company stated I had "filed bankruptcy". A couple Fridays ago, I told Bernard how badly I wanted to get him his money but that it appeared that someone had filed bankruptcy in my name and that would prohibit me. I asked him to perform a nationwide search and told him I would pay him for his time. He obliged mentioning nothing of payment. He said he would do it the following Monday Monday morning rolled around and I woke up to a text, an email, and an app notification from his paralegal, demanding the rest of his money. I texted Bernard about it and he didn't respond. The week went by and I called his assistant to see what was up. I texted her on our group chat and also called his paralegal to no avail. Suddenly his assistant called me and apologized, stating that it was all a misunderstanding and the alerts take place every 2 weeks. She said Bernard could do my search for $750 as it would allow him 3 hours. He has 25 years of legal experience and I knew the search only takes minutes even for a beginner. It was a PRICE GAUGE. She assured me no more alerts would be made and we hung up. Funny thing is, I had never gotten the alerts in the MONTH I had worked with him. Not ONE...so if they were every two weeks, they would have alerted me at least once right? Plus, who charges someone almost A GRAND to perform a search when they are having issues getting the INITIAL money they owe to GET THEIR KID BACK. I asked for a refund last Saturday and havent gotten a single text, call, or email. I paid him $2000 to be his paralegal for a month and to be presented false hope that he was on my side. What do I think? Well, I think he is money hungry and unconcerned with your personal problems. I think he located the OC in this case and used the documents I collected for him to sell me out, making me think that ALL THE SUDDEN, he was willing to work for half the money, up front. I also think he tried to sucker the money he didn't get from my friend out of me....but who am I ... Just a paralegal in training, on the Dean's List in school, and a double major in Business.

Greetings to all 💝 I would like to share my experience with Attorney Brian Bernard. I had Mr. Bernard saved in my contacts from a relative in jail that asked me to reach out to him (Brian) in June 2024. About 1 month later my son went to jail and the attorney that I initially reached out to wanted to help for the "low-low" price of $7,500 for a Class "A" misdemeanor with an initial payment of $2,500😂. I sent Brian a text message wanting to know how much should a misdemeanor charge of that nature cost. I was bracing myself for impact of his response (because I am extra broke😂) but his response pleased me. The conversation of the photo is attached💝 Brian had my son out within hours. I was relieved because as parents we want our children to do the right thing and be ok. The day was nearing for me to fly out of town for work, so I was pleased and burden lifted. Moving forward to August 2024, my Aunt called me upset and stated her son went to jail and it would cost a lot of money for the bail bonds to get him released. I instantly said "Aunty call Brian, I am sure he can help and have him released the same day for a fair price💕 " She said text me his info and I will call him (In her still hurt tone). After my aunty called Brian, she called back telling me how excited she was and I could hear it in her soul💕 Then she told me some fun facts about Brian's career from their in person meet (I paid through CashApp😊 so we did not meet in person). My aunty kept thanking me. I said Aunty we Thank God for Mr. Brian Bernard. Names to me are very important because what we are called is what we are as well as what we respond to. For example My name is Jacqueline which means "May God Protect Her" and He definitely has throughout my whole entire life💝 Brian means: High, Noble, Honor and dignity Bernard means: Brave, Hardy and strong Now look at this fair man walk in his purpose according to who and what he is called.💗💖💝💓

Witch is really sad. Barley picks his phone up. Will NOT update you on court dates or settings. Nor does he care about your case. He prob just looks at it the day of and pushes it to the side. He should be stripped of his license. If I was as care free on things as he is to his clients I would have filed complaint after complaint. His only Interest is himself and his motorcycle. He post on social media but will def look the other way if you need him. Horrible service. And he knows it. HIRE PROFESSIONAL HELP

I paid Greg Sisco to fight for custody of my daughter in court. While waiting for the judge to call our case he was bad mouthing the other lawyer and client, using explicit language. While most lawyers are looking over their cases Greg was playing games on his cellphone. Greg acted overly confident that we wouldn’t have trouble in the child custody case but when he stood before the judge he did not know what to say and took no legal stand against opposing counsel. I lost custody of my daughter after been granted years of sold custody. After court he said nothing could be done and reprimanded me for what the opposing counsel presented to the judge and said to get my life together. Opposing counsel couldn’t even get a hold of Greg on a meeting in the judges quarters, I had to let him know. Greg showed up to the meeting and his excuse for not doing his job was that the judge wouldn’t let him speak. I hired a new lawyer. Still have had no response from Greg.

Greg is a very unusual lawyer. He actually CARES. (no offense to all the other lawyers out there, but ya know... LOL) I used him for a family law matter and found him experienced, empathetic and thorough. His fees are reasonable and he let me make payments.

In 2008, I had already caught a case it was on probation. I was working as an escort on Craigslist when Mr Walter Prentice contacted me and told me he was wanting to Trade Services. I knew that I was violated on my probation because of non-payment of Child Support. So I allowed mr. Prentice to come over and speak to me about this. I explained to him that I had cases that were criminal and civil to deal with. He said he could deal with both. He has done some of what he said he would do I did everything I said I would do. Mr Prentice is totally left me hanging on this case currently going on. I turned myself in on it in January 2019 because I had some time left on it. From my understanding it was a matter of about 12 days. I sat in that jail for a month because neither Mr Prentice nor the jail let the Attorney General's office know that I was in jail. My 76 year old mother had to call and call and call until she got hold of somebody and found somebody who could speak to her on the phone and then they had me in court the next day. Mr Prentice was not there. I explained to the judge that I had done time the year before and from my understanding six months was the max that you could get after your kids turn 18. I asked the judge to run my sentence concurrent and she did and release me that day. Mr Prentice did show up to court after that on my oldest son's case. After that was handled there was one more case and he showed up for that one too. They reset it and I lost the paperwork. I am currently homeless and don't have access to any storage facility or anything like that. I have lost most of what I have. I asked Mr Prentice many times in emails about my court date and he could not answer my question. He implied that it was different because he was talking to the Attorney General's office waiting for them to call him back. Now I have another arrest warrant out for me. He is lazy doesn't do anything. He is impossible to reach. If you retain this man you will regret it.

Walter is an excellent attorney. My wife and I have hired Walter for two different legal matters, and Walter has gone above and beyond the call of duty. Walter is extremely knowledgable in all aspects of the law that I am personally aware of, and I wouldn't think of hiring any other attorney to handle any form of litigations or legal proceedings.

Paid for a simple change of conditions or release from probation after several years of exempilary behavior. After months and months of inaction on the lawyers part I finally got him to do something. He made my judge and PO mad at me by the things he said about me. Some advocate. I didn't get anything he said he would be able to deliver on because he didn't know the laws going into my case.

I hired Mr Nettles on a case out of Travis County. This attorney is very Rude, and lazy. He never showed up in court on time. I was harrassed for his legal fees by him and his wife. They also keep telling me they would withdraw from case. I was never late on payment. He never got a plea deal. I ended up hiring another law firm and lost all my money with Malcolm Nettles. I strongly recommend you to search for someone more professional and educated. I should of known when he called me to his Home/office.

Did not have a good experience with this lawyer. She seemed unprepared when the day of court came and was even late. She did not advise me of any potential ramifications of the route we were pursuing that the opposing counsel might use so we/I was blind-sided by the opposing counsel in court, while on the stand, which I was never prepared to even be on and shouldnt have been on. Little to no preparation and she bickered with opposing counsel in a manner that felt like junior high arguing. I was so embarrassed by her performance. Needless to say, we lost in court and my situation continued to be horrible and my relationship with my ex and their willingness to work with me further diminished. Stay away from this lawyer at all costs.

This law firm was one of the most unsatisfactory experiences I've ever had. I hired Elizabeth for a straightforward protective order case, but it took her over a month just to initiate contact with opposing counsel. Despite their claims, no communication with opposing counsel was established until opposing counsel reached out to me directly to inquire if Elizabeth would contact them. Once contact was made, it took several months for them to draft and send orders, with opposing counsel ultimately filing the orders. I have had to repeatedly request bills, statements, and payment links. During our first court hearing, I made numerous attempts to contact Elizabeth with no response. Despite firing her over a month ago and sending multiple requests for my file, she has failed to withdraw from the case and send me my file. I strongly advise against hiring this firm for your legal matters.

I had Elizabeth on my case for 11 months. It was hard to contact her and when we did happen to speak she could not go over any information I've already given to her.she always had an excuse as to why she couldn't do anything I asked.when we did go to court she never tried to talk to me about anything I literally had to go to her face to get her attention.she was supposed to be my advocate but she was always with the defense. She was fired.

When first looking for attorney could not find anything on him so we hired him. He was paid over 30,000.00. He was extremely sweet until he had the money then he changed to hateful, hard to reach and rude when he did. He never explained anything and I was left blind and was hung out to dry. This man should never be an attorney. Do NOT recommend at all !

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
