Word of advice stay away from Miller and Associates they are extremely unprofessional and don't care about your case. The communication is poor to none, they will not meet you in person even if you request, they will charge you for every item and everything is limited representation they have charged a total of $5899 for my case and when I was reluctant in their professionalism and hired another attorney they kept my $3000 without rendering service be careful once you pay them money they will not return your money and claim breach of contract despite the poor representation. They have been disciplined by the state Licensing authority (see top page )and will treat you and scold you as if you are the defendant instead of issuing guidance and defend you in your case.

Someone complained in these reviews of being told to have a glass of wine. Guess what? After a full day of grueling depositions (questioning by lawyers under oath), I was stressed out, nervous and worried that I messed up, and I was told the same thing. It was clear to me in the whole context that he was trying to ease my nervousness, and adding that was just Jeffrey Miller's way of saying, "Girl, you did fine. You have nothing to worry about. You did your part. I know these depositions can be intimidating and nerve wrecking. Now it is time for you to go home and chill and relax. Have a glass of wine. We got your back and I am holding the legal fort." And he sure did! Jeff won my case hands down!! And, in the face of what I thought were insurmountable difficulties. But one by one, Miller took care of everything. The man is simply brilliant. Just brilliant. Miller seems to know how to prioritize his time to research and to find just the perfect case law that WINS you YOUR CASE! I realized, when Miller is on a roll: just do what he asks. Just send the documents or info he requests. He anticipates and thinks unusually quickly and clearly. He goes into some state of hyper-focus, working on a case it seems. My case was complex. He goes a million miles an hour. And then wants this, that and the other piece of paperwork - and wants it quickly! I just always sent the office whatever was needed in the moment. I could tell they were working hard - for me ! And I wasn't gonna let them down. Scanning and emailing it, or running to the post office as soon as I could. I just stayed organized on my end, having my paperwork in order and ready to be send off. So he can do his job which, it turns out, he does extremely well! Miller might adjust his original legal strategy, in reaction to a motion by the opposing party, or something on the docket that you as a client are blissfully unaware of because his firm is already taking care of it for you. Just trust they know what they are doing, and go with the flow. I did that, and the results were fantastic. Sometimes, it may seem to make no sense to you, but that is exactly where it pays off to have Jeffrey Miller - or he and one of his clever associates, such as Alexandra Rodriquez, together - work for you: They understand something you don't because that is THEIR job. To me it felt as if I had the A-team on my side. They are an impressive bunch! They saved the day, when I thought it couldn't be saved. Don't know how they did it, but they did. I found again, and again: they have a plan to bring you justice, and that plan comes brilliantly together in the end. Help them help you though. Send them 2 copies of everything requested. Send it, organized well, marked well. And: in 2 identical files with your name & case number on it in one envelope. As if 2 lawyers would literally be standing by the front door of the office as your envelope arrives, and they both want to look at all of your paperwork at the same moment right away. I always realized that they are helping not just me, but tens of others, and they have hundreds of papers coming in daily - so I tried to help the lawyers too. (A long time ago, I used to be a secretary at a law office.) I always marked my paperwork with case name and number clearly - and sent it in double. Don't write on the front of originals - mark on the back or in corner of the copy that you send in. And as with everything: Always, keep one copy for yourself. This is common sense. Jeff Miller and his associates have been amazing. Miller has 5 offices and several associates - they are obviously busy - but if they take on your case, you ought to thank God on your bare knees to be so lucky. Five stars ! And a gold medal !! *****

Worst mistake of my life. RUN, from this lawyer and his Associates. They don't really care for you, all they want is your money, once they have it, good luck, you are on your own! If you want someone to fight for you, THIS IS NOT the law firm nor lawyers you need. When you complain, they turn it around and make you feel like it was your fault. They lie, I came to see them in Oct 2013 to file a simple divorce, did not go with the "drive-through", paid higher fees for personal representation. They kept telling me the Petition had been filed since October, but were having problems serving the Respondent, when in actuallity, they did not file the Petition until Dec 3, 2013. Even the Petition as full of mistakes. I only found out because I became frustrated and went to the courthouse myself, and saw the court records. That's when I realized I was in trouble. Too late because I had already paid their fees. I was told that "my case fell through the crack" but from then on I would be taken care of. Wrooong! The lies and misrepresentation continued, the tria was horrendous. The Associate that came with me did not fight for me. I could have done a better job. I could go on and on, but then this would become a book. JUST DO NOT USE THESE PEOPLE!! DO NOT RECOMMEND. Not even a 1 star, BUT IN ORDER TO SUBMIT THIS I HAVE TO AT LEAST GIVE THEM 1 STAR. VERY, VERY POOR.

I hired Stephanie in January of 2012. As of September 2012 she is no longer my attorney. In the beginning Stephanie was incredibly helpful. She pointed out mistakes and flat out errors my previous attorney had made. She helped me to obtain my ex's discovery documents, and even navigated through opposing counsel's lack of interest in the case. Everything went downhill after our formal mediation. My terms agreement was rushed and no one thought of the consequences or long term impact there would be. I was told "this is the best you're going to get" and that I needed to sign it since we were being kicked out of our location. *Yes, my mediation was held at an offsite location and we were pressured to leave. While child support was finally established (after 16 months without a penny), and my ex did agree to open relocation, without me having to file a petition to relocate (only because I granted the same in return) little else was set up to protect me and my girls should my ex fail to comply. Stephanie then spent a substantial amount of time drafting my MSA, without consulting me (which I was charged for). She stated "I drafted this Agreement on the basis of the terms list we reached at mediation and our many discussions and took into consideration the need for consequences for (EX's) actions, especially with respect to timesharing. I spent a lot of time carefully crafting the language in the Agreement and am quite honestly surprised that you think it gives (EX) too much power. However, take your time, outline your concerns, and we will address them when we you are ready." I spent an extensive amount of time sending requests for modification to Stephanie. Each time I was met with the same resistance, "but you signed the terms agreement." Or, "my feeling is that (EX) would want something in return if he even complies at all." She never submitted my requests to my ex's attorney. I finally decided to send Stephanie a "bare all" email outlining my feelings and frustrations. I asked her many questions, I very pointedly explained the language I wanted written into my MSA (particularly outlining consequences should my ex fail to comply and adding deadlines for notification of intent to exercise timesharing), I added where I would compromise with my "must-haves," and ended my email with the plea that things go back to the way they were in the beginning. I desperately wanted to feel that she was my attorney again. I wanted her to stop defending my ex's position and posing everything on the basis of what was "fair" versus what was actually right. She replied the next day... In her response she stated that she had decided to withdraw as my attorney. She also noted my "failure to understand that I have been a firm advocate for both you and your daughters since day one is unfortunate, as is your failure to recognize the fact that at mediation, I was able to negotiate a settlement that was very much in your favor." Stephanie didn't acknowledge any of my questions or concerns that were outlined in my email to her, instead she dropped me. If your legal needs are easy, cut and dry, without needing someone 100% on your side, I suppose Stephanie would be an alright choice. However, if you need someone to be in your corner and on your side, do not employ her. Stephanie's view and opinions are not wavering when it comes to what the client wants and can prove are in the best interest of themselves and their family. I just wanted to make sure everything was set up/established that would protect me and my daughters from my ex. (history of not paying support, establishing dates for visitation, responsiveness, etc.). I felt betrayed; she made me out to be the bad guy. Your attorney is not supposed to do that. They're supposed to represent you to their fullest especially when you handed them everything and were very clear in your wants and goals.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
