Hired Mr. Trenkle on more than one occasion and would recommend him without a doubt. He is very realistic, knows the law front and back, answers his calls, is prepared, provides all your pertinent documentation, etc! I cant really say enough. He does not sugar coat things, he will tell you what and how every detail will play out. He will not take your money if he cant help. I hired him within a week of a court date (last minute) and he was there for me, and knew my case as well as I did. You couldnt ask for a better attorney, TRUST ME! I have hired several others.... Mr.Trenkle is second to none.

This lawyer is fantastic. She is very smart. Smarter than a lot of the big dogs in down. In fact, I hired a big dog, but Lauren was put on the case as his associate and ended up doing all the work and dealing with everything. She never overcharged me. In fact, her fees were very fair. I would highly recommend her to anyone who is a high net worth individual or celebrity going through marital discord. She really knows her stuff.

Peggy did an excellent job of covering all the bases for me. If she wasn't sure of the answer, she immediately addressed it. She is quite knowledgeable and approaches things with a great sense of organization. Because she has stepped in for a judge occasionally, she works very well in the court room with any judge I have seen her with. She shows great respect to the judges as she does to her clients. She always puts her client first. One will always feel fortunate to have her representing them and on their side. She is definiately not afraid to speak up on her clients behave. She handled both my divorce and lawsuit/dispute case for me.

My experience with Larry is excellent! I had a bad experience with an immigration lawyer once and he caused me a lot of stress. He was that SLOW and he seems to not have how to deal the time sensitivity in immigration case. When I first did a consultation with Larry, his vibe was immediately kind and personable. He will explain to you clearly your options and in my case, I came out there knowing exactly what to do. Larry is very thorough and organized when preparing your case and always there to answer your questions promptly. I felt really taken care of. I will not hesitate to recommend his firm to anyone who are looking for an immigration lawyer service.

Sandra is amazing and a master at listening to my concerns about representing what I need to ensure the safety of my daughter's well being. She first started my case as a paralegal and recently became an attorney. She is sharp, smart, and trustworthy. Not only is she a fantastic listener, but she translates my emotional (and valid) points about why my daughter needs to stay with me full time custody in a way that makes me feel good. I believe that my case is being properly heard to the court under her counsel. I feel very comfortable speaking to her about my case and trust in her work ethic.

I am currently still in the process of getting a divorce for little over a year now. This divorce is not something I wanted, but it's something that is happening. Ms . Torres has been honest and up front with me since day 1 about my case. Her office has been helpful and understanding of my situation. Before I hired Ms. Torres, I felt like I was beening bullied by my wife because I did not understand my rights. Another reason I hired Ms. Torres is because I know she would never compromise her integrity and always give good sound advise and do what is right. Which is something rare these days! If your looking for a shady lawyer who just wants your money that we always make joke about, then this is not the lawyer you want to hire. If you want honest represention then please seek console from Ms.Torres.

Mark Zeller has been my attorney for 7 years. He is the best Family Law attorney I have ever had. He is the most professional attorney I have ever worked with. In our first case he helped me get sole legal custody of my disabled daughter. In our next case he helped me get sole physical custody, and had my ex reduced to therapeutic supervised visitation due to his emotional abuse and medical neglect of our disabled daughter. Mark did what CPS refused to do. He has a calm caring nature about him, at the same time I have seen him argue and not back down with a judge that went back on her word and was about to make the wrong decision. He would not back down, until she finally relented, and did the right thing. Finding Mark was the best thing that ever happened for me and my daughter. She no longer goes to her fathers house to be abused. 4 years of supervised visits has brought me peace of mind. Thank you Mark, you're the best!

Jeremy Masys. Where to even begin. He hopped on my case quickly, became incredibly familiar with every little detail of the situation at hand, and put together an incredibly efficient and effective plan to take action and resolve things. The opposing party’s attorney was impossible to work with, and Jeremy handled it beautifully. His intelligence, familiarity with the law, and fervor to tackle some of the bizarre intricacies of my divorce were unparalleled. He answered my calls, texts, and emails not only quickly, but at any time of day or night. He always knew exactly what to do and say, and was patient with me when I asked him questions about procedure and process Not only would I recommend him, I would wear a shirt with his face on it. I would thank him at the Oscars. I would plant a flag with his name on the moon. If this seems like an overly glowing recommendation, it is, and for good reason. I can’t thank this guy enough for the way he handled my case.

I hired Eddie to handle my child custody case and have since utilized him for other legal needs. He and his assistant Chris posses care, knowledge and professionalism. When I call the office, they both not only know who I am, but the details and history of my case without my having to provide reminders. They've kept me well informed of the possibilities and changes throughout my case. Eddie is realistic and has exceed my expectations by under-promising and over-delivering. He and Chris have treated me with respect and I know they are both invested in the best interest of me, my family and my case, doing everything in their power to prevail with a positive outcome in my favor. Eddie was recommended by other professionals that I know and I have since referred him to friends in need of the same excellent work you expect from your attorney. Eddie is the third attorney I have used and will be the last.

Monica is one of e most patient people I have met. She is extremely professional in her approach to divorce and considers all involved. She is calm and precise and well educated in military divorces. Her knowledge is beyond what I expected and I learned a lot about the legal system because of her clear expectations. She is resepcted by other lawyers as being honest and to the point. She communicates extremely well not just with adults and others in her field, but also with young children and teens of which she is extremely considerate in divorce cases. Her approach in trial made me feel relaxed and comfortable. Not once did I feel she left me to be alone or unknowing during the whole divorce process , she was always available and responded to my calls and emails promptly even after hours. An expert on difficult divorces!

I'm convinced that Ann Riley is the most ethical, competent, and intelligent divorce attorney in the Bay Area. I interviewed a lot of lawyers and many of them were simply not confident about the law and fairly apathetic. Ann really cares in a way that is helpful. She doesn't waste your time, she is able to be firm when needed, and is extremely logical. She has a good understanding of the family court system in SF. Opposing counsel was unprofessional and difficult and Ms. Riley refused to engage, knowing that it would cost me more if she did so and that it wouldn't get me any further ahead. A lot of attorneys like to engage in time wasting activities because they know they can get away with billing you for them - there wasn't a single line item in Ms.Riley's bill that was questionable - she deserved every penny of her retainer. I wish I had met Ann under different circumstances but I'm really grateful to have met her when I did. She gives me hope that there are still decent and good people who find value in doing the right thing.

Michelle helped our family over a five month long period regarding the custody of a baby. Ours was an unusual case, in that for the first month the baby had not yet been born. She knew what needed to be done, and in the areas where she needed to learn the more intricate laws of our specific case, she dug in tirelessly. She is easy to talk to and work with. Our family was unfamiliar with how the laws work, and all the different legal processes that can happen during a case like this. She kept us informed and answered our questions and always stayed positive and thoughtful. She is also more than fair with how she charges her time. I would definitely use her again for any any legal issue we come up against.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
