As a client for several years, I have to state that Ms Elder's knowledge and compassion have helped me survive a bitter divorce. She has shown her follow up to be most excellent, in that she has kept me informed and up to date on any and all changes in my case, so we were able to be proactive rather than reactive in solving problems. I am most impressed with her knowledge of family law in CA. When my situation changed, she was ready to use a wide range of legal knowledge to help me win my case, when all others had failed. She is compassionate, easy to talk to, and expresses a high degree of her ability to help people without being overbearing or inconsiderate. Ms. Elder is a person who is committed to providing excellent counsel in law, and I would recommend her to anyone seeking representation for family law. I trust her completely.

I would highly Michael Christy with no reservation. Michael conducted himself with professionalism, compassion, provided a wealth of knowledge and advocated for my legal matters. If it wasn’t for Michael, I feel that I would’ve not been able to get the results that I got. He works around the clock to ensure that my concerns are heard and presented. Michael facilitated the difficult court system smoothly, helped me feel prepared, and helped me understand what to expect. He is easy to work with, kind, has my best interest and easy to get a hold of, which I truly appreciate. I would highly recommend Michael and will continue to work with him.

Mr. Larsen is a well qualified, seasoned, and experienced attorney with a commendable commitment to his clients and their needs. I hired Mr. Larsen for some special circumstances when I was unable to attend ex parte (emergency, last minute) hearings. He was available to help and guide me through a lot of court issues I was facing and ALWAYS returned my emails and phone calls. He's extremely knowledgeable and will tell you how it is, even if it's not what you want to hear, but in a kind manner.

I really had no knowledge of the way Family Law works before working with Mr. Ross. He guided me along the way and helped to clarify the situation is so that I could understand everything that was happening and why. He drafted a fair and detailed agreement that kept everything civil between parties. My first visit to his office I was a bit scared of my situation, just "not knowing" what would happen. When I left his office after my second visit, I was confident, calm, and knew exactly what direction I was headed from then on out. He was referred to me by my father when he had to deal with an unfortunate turn of events in his life. Then I found myself in a similar situation years down the road and it was comforting having Mr. Ross as my "right hand man". No one wants to find themselves in the need of an attorney, but when you do it's great to have someone like Mr. Ross to guide you through.

I went through a bumpy divorce several years and ago and appreciated Adam's advocacy, insight, and strategy. He listened to me, and worked hard to ensure that my needs in the split were met. I also appreciated his flexibility: when we finally went to court, we negotiated a settlement very quickly. Adam is very client-centered and was always transparent and realistic about our approach. He made a difficult process much easier than it could have been!

I had an issue with the Orange County Social Services at the courthouse here in Orange County. I was given a public defender from the public defender's office who did absolutely zero for my defense however managed to string me along and not do anything for me but for the prosecution did everything for them. I did not want to say anything more that will affect my case however let me tell you this if you think you're going to get anywhere with a public defender you are absolutely lying yourself. The child services people including the courts public defenders children's attorney State appointed attorneys Social Services and the judge all work together to keep you in check until you either screw up or until you find an attorney that can make things happen more quickly than normal. Martin has done wonders for me for my defense and hopefully for the immediate return of my newborn. Martin has more experience then all the lawyers including the judge in regards to my case and probably others. He knows the law he knows what is needed on both ends of the legal sides. His experience speaks for itself however he's done a great job so far on my case and we're fortunate enough to have him help us through this difficult time. Very nice guy to the point and very professional. The best part of it all is that we have a very confident competent attorney in the middle of this ridiculous legal mess that we are in.

Greg personally represented me all the way through my bankruptcy case and did a very good job. He didn't use any paralegals. He helped me to understand every aspect of what went on, including the reaffirmation of my car loan and the choice whether to try and have my student loans discharged based on hardship. Greg is a really good lawyer, and he's honest.

I found Tiffanie Spivey on Craigslist in May. I was looking to file Chapter 7 bankruptcy. I met with Tiffanie at her office (she offered to come to my house if needed). After meeting with her, she informed me that I could not get a chapter 7, because my income was too high. However she offered to help me file a chapter 13. Everything went exactly as she said it would and she even handled calls from my creditors until my BK was final. All this while charging me considerably less than what other Attorneys quoted me!

My husband and I appreciated having the opportunity to work with Jennifer Bunyan on an arduous high-conflict case. Jennifer is professional, kind, compassionate, supportive, understanding, responsive, and personable. She is passionate about helping others; putting every effort into achieving the outcome your case deserves. It is rare to find an attorney who will listen to what you have to say and who will work collaboratively to navigate the stressors these cases often bring. We felt supported, heard, understood, and valued by Jennifer. With Jennifer's support, we felt we had someone in our corner giving voice to our needs and concerns with our family's best interest at heart. We trust Jennifer and the team at Neumann Family Law with any family matter we may have. We highly recommend this law firm to help you navigate your family law matter.

Ms. Sbranti was an incredible help for a landlord/tenant case that I had a few months back. I had some renter issues with my previous landlord earlier this year. He refused to acknowledge any correspondence that my prior roommates or I sent to him regarding our security deposit. After nearly a month of no communication we got a hold of Ms. Sbranti. She immediately made contact with our landlord and within a week we had our full deposit back plus additional funds. She was extremely professional, timely and proved to be very successful. Without her help I am sure we would be in small claims court and still dealing with this issue five months later.

I was referred to Gold Law, a Professional Law Corporation in 2013 when I was made a Co-Trustee of a friend's trust. My friends Children lived in South America so it was necessary to have someone in California as part of the trust. In my first meeting at The Gold Law Office I was introduced to Marissa Garcia who would be the trust attorney. Marissa collected all the information for the trust and I was immediately at ease with how she handled everything. She knew exactly what to do in the correct sequence even though she was dealing with me here in California and my friend's son in South America; where laws differ and that was no problem for her. Within less than one year that trust was closed. In 2015 my sister passed away and I was the Successor Trustee for her trust. I knew immediately that I would go to Marissa to be the trust attorney. This trust is much more complex than the first trust she was involved in. Again Marissa knew everything that needed to be done and in what order. Marissa has been very patient with me through all of this and has kept me informed of everything. None of my questions are a problem for her to answer and to explain. Marissa is a very professional attorney and also a very caring person. She has always been there for me and is never too busy to listen to me on my bad days as I find myself with no immediate family left. I know that we will remain friends even after this trust has come to a close.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
