After my dad passed away in April 2024, my mom and I filed for Dependency and Indemnity Compensation (DIC) through the VA. Despite working with a VA liaison and following up for 10 months, we received no real updates—just that the claim was still pending. Then, my mom received a notice from the VA, which she mistakenly believed was a denial of the DIC claim. Unfortunately, even the local VA liaison misinterpreted it, causing a lot of confusion. Given that my dad’s passing was clearly linked to his disability, we realized we needed legal representation and turned to James Comerford.

Some time back I was pulled into a case involving a former employer, a federal grand jury, and allegations of bribing a state senator. Prosecutors wanted a sworn statement from me, and I was completely lost and overwhelmed. Fortunately, a good friend recommended Daniel Kessler and to this day I’m thankful they did. Mr. Kessler took on the case, explaining everything clearly without talking down to me. He negotiated with the prosecutors, handled their requests for files, and made certain that I wasn’t going to get dragged down for my old boss’ actions. I don’t know what I would have done without him. I do know it wouldn’t have been good. It’s a rare lawyer who can hold their own against the Feds but also doesn’t have an ego the size of Texas. Mr. Kessler is professional when he needs to be yet still casual enough to feel like I’m talking to a real person, one who actually cares about my situation even after the check clears.

Being a nurse with the same company for 28 plus years, I thought I was secure in my job. Through good and bad, we banded together to take care of our patients. I worked my way into management and was proud of my staff and my company. Until I became the patient.
Getting hurt on the job at first seemed like an untimely inconvenience. I was confident that I could get fixed and then back to my job. I was wrong. I was blocked at every direction by workers comp; jumping through hoops and not knowing which way to turn. I would be in literal tears with the case worker begging for them to do something to stop the pain, to please help me. I may as well have been talking to a rock.
When all else failed and I thought I was going to hurt forever, I found Jack Cannon and his team. To say I was blessed would be an understatement. His knowledge and background in navigating through the legal and emotional aspects of a workplace injury is second to none. He made sure we had money coming in, helped get me second opinions for the surgery I desperately needed, and was there for me every step of the way. The two biggest things I learned:
1. It doesn’t matter how long you have been with a company, workers comp is like any other business and they are not on your side.

I contacted Mr. Taradash over four years ago in a very desperate and lost situation. He assured me that he knew how to help. Divorce can be messy, challenging, and financially and emotionally draining. I was fortunate enough to have Shay representing me through it all. Unlike the previous lawyer I had hired, who was hostile, condescending, and dismissive of my concerns, Shay took the time to listen to my needs. She was not only patient, kind, and professional, she showed compassion. She always took the time to explain everything in detail and made sure I felt supported and understood. Because she was aware of my financial constraints, she made sure that whatever step we took was financially feasible for me. She provided genuine guidance; it wasn’t just about her making money. Interviewing various lawyers in December 2019, I met with Shay and was surprised at how young she looked. She’s the age of my daughters and I wondered would she be capable of handling my divorce which would involve several million dollars of property and division of other assets. Did she have enough experience? Another concern of mine was that, even though I would be hiring her for her knowledge of the legal system, I wanted to actively share the bottom line decisions on how certain things would be handled. She agreed to work with me, and my divorce papers were filed in February
of 2020. This event in my life proved to be one of the most stressful dragged out events ever! Shay never buckled. January 2024 my divorce was finally resolved! She was there working with me for four very long years dealing with such a difficult advisory… I don’t think many people would have had the drive to see this through. The times when I wanted to fly off the handle, she would give me Calm and appropriate advice as to my next move. She even explained that certain things would be much more expensive thus disproving the idea that ALL attorneys are just about the money. She of course, needs to make a living, but the amount of work she did and the manner which it was done , she was worth every penny of it and then some! I kept my faith in her, and she never let me down. She guided me in the right directions all the way through, and she was very easy to work with. I actually consider her a friend at this point and she not only helped me monetarily get through this divorce, she truly was there emotionally. So don’t let her youth lead you to believe that she doesn’t have the courage, compassion, and knowledge to represent anyone in need of legal assistance.

Heather was my attorney during my initial divorce proceedings and was an excellent listener. She was able to cover corners in ways I hadn’t imagined. After my ex came back in violation of our agreement, Heather should have been my first call, but I got tripped up because it was about the house and started with a real estate attorney. What a waste of time. As soon as Heather was back in the case, my ex quickly lost her appetite for the fight she picked, and then when she sold the house a few months later, Heather was there to ensure the agreement was enforced.
She has the experience to get it all done and as smoothly as you and your soon to be ex make it.
