If you require representation by a law firm with impeccable ethical standards, look elsewhere. If a cavalier attitude about the appearance of impropriety or being willing to subvert the will of Maine voters to achieve a business goal don’t bother you, then this could be the firm for you! A staffer at Rudman Winchell posed as a 'concerned neighbor', interfering in a vote on a local ordinance by writing a letter full of misinformation in support of one of the firm's clients whose interests would be affected by the outcome. This could not have happened without their knowledge. The lies were bad enough, but the concealment backfired. The advice they provided their clients was not effective; public sentiment went against them. The client claimed in public remarks that the staffer had been let go prior to writing the letter but there's no evidence to support that, nor would that have made her any less of an associate. But all that pales in comparison with their initial strategy, to push their client's proposal past an ordinance which was clearly meant to prohibit projects over a certain size. They built a house of cards on the existence of a minor wording error. Be warned: after being defeated by the voters they still didn’t take no for an answer and tried to get a favorable decision in Superior Court, further wasting their client’s money. The meritless case has been dismissed.

I received a call at my place of employment from an employee of this company and I left my shift in tears. I haven’t been spoken to in such a demeaning and belittling way in some time- that is why I am writing. I was schooled by this person about how to run a business and that not answering phones will be cause for people to look elsewhere. While I whole heartedly agree with the principle, it does not take into account that a person showing up to their job and who makes no company-wide decisions - is not an appropriate contact to put down (let alone harass). I work very hard and despite the insinuation of this person, I am not stupid; I simply have no control of staffing or volume of calls. This is not the first person I’ve encountered from this firm that has exhibited a concerning moral compass. I’m cheering everyone on to be represented adequately and fairly- so I’m not writing this to express hatred (we all have our moments, me included). I just want to share my personal experience as I know that those seeking legal advice and representation want to feel informed and secure in their endeavors.

We sat waiting for over half hour while this attorney gossiped with another woman from down the hall from her office about a previous employee. She cursed a lot and overall gave my wife and I a terrible impression. Her entire office had an odor of fast food, was overly bright and simply not cheerful. There was an older woman who worked there who talked to herself quite a bit and was very rude and seemed very unhappy to be there. After sitting with her for far too long listening to her talk about herself. we eagerly went down the street to another attorney who was professional and met our needs. Two thumbs down on this attorney.

Had a case a couple of years ago. Office staff were always nice and professional which is why I added another star. Peter himself is a nice guy, but very frustrating to work with. On several occasions, during our conversations, I noticed he couldn't remember much about my case and had to be reminded! Obviously that equaled a higher bill. A below-average performance in my opinion. He never went above/beyond. His court representation was also below expectations. I would not recommend him!

I paid him a small retainer to help me in a deposition and he did virtually zero preparation with me for my case yet charged me 2k not sure what that went to. He demanded another 2k the night before my very emotionally difficult depositions where I had to testify against a recently convicted abuser of mine. It felt like I was being squeezed. When I was asked sensitive questions that were irrelevant, invasive and triggering - I turned to him for help and he did nothing. I tried to plead the fifth, twice. He did nothing but sat there and let me be revictimized and I felt defenseless. That was my experience, very upset for my deposition, was unprotected. Funnily enough I can't find a single attorney to take my case now...

My boyfriend and i wanted to put me on one of his deeds with a mortgage. I am already on the deed where we currently live. Ken kept stating what a generous gift my boyfriend was giving me and he had dealt with plenty of divorces. We flat out told him i was divorced and my boyfriend has no children it is what we want considering we aren't getting married but have been together for 25 years. Ken had me leave the room to talk to my boyfriend privately for 20 minutes. When my boyfriend came out he said Ken says for us to do a life lease. WHAT A JOKE. Ok so apparently he sees me as a gold digger. If thats the case then i would just be happy with my boyfriend's three 401ks that i am 100 beneficiary including the other deed i am already on. We wanted just a simple quick claim deed done and he just didn't want to do it. This guy was a jerk and rude. Also, floor was not vacummed and his secretary was walking around with no shoes. Very unprofessional!

Lenny said he had done divorce cases in the past, he also bragged about how he handled cases for the good fellows in New York witch was a lie, and then he denied he said it and called me a lier, he let the court clean me out and left me homeless, I had two houses and they gave them both to my X wife, all Lenny did was take my money, I lost everything including what the judge said I could keep, how does this even happen?? He kept telling me he needed more money for things I didn’t understand, I would never hire him again and I would not refer him to anyone unless I didn’t like the person I’m referring him to, if you hire him you better watch your back and your pocket..

Not cheap but you get what you pay for, he knows how to get it done. To those who complain about losing a retainer after charges dropped, sometimes that's the way it goes. When a DA finds out he is on your side they may not want to fight against him in court knowing he is a formidable litigator.

I hired Diane a few years ago when my husband and I were divorcing. Without getting into too many details, my ex-husband had done some very shady financial things during our marriage which cleaned out my inheritance from my mother. I was financially devastated. Diane went to bat for me and I felt as though I had a guardian angel. I ended up with a decent settlement after hours of mediation. Diane was fantastic and countered every argument that the other side made. I am not sure where I would be right now if it wasn't for her. I have probably referred 10 people to her since then and she is the only divorce attorney that I would recommend!

Any divorce, by its very nature, is difficult. My divorce, you could easily say, has been extremely difficult, and exceptionally long - almost two years long. Attorney Dusini, and her firm, MittelAsen, has represented me since day one. I can unequivocally state, without any hesitation whatsoever, there is not a better, more competent Family Law Attorney in the State of Maine then Diane Dusini. I knew from the very start of my divorce that it was going to be difficult, so I spent quite a bit of time at the onset selecting an attorney to represent me. As a first step, I asked a number of prominent lawyers in Portland who they would recommend. Ms Dusini's name was on everyone's short list. As a second step I also spoke with a number of people who had gone through difficult divorces themselves. Again Ms Dusini's name was continuously mentioned. One woman, who I respected tremendously, told me this: "you have to hire MittelAsen." My divorce has had endless twists and turns, almost to the point of being unbelievable: two PFA's in two states, numerous Court hearings, working with a GAL, DHHS and Spurwink, amongst others. Whenever we were in Court it was so clear to me that Diane was always 100% prepared and ready, and that is why she/we have had so many victories along the way. I always felt confident stepping into the Court Room with Diane. I knew I had the best representation possible. Granted, I did not always agree with every Judge's ruling (and I do not think that anyone does in a divorce case), but I always knew that Diane did her absolute best for me. I could not ask for more then that. If I could go back to day one I would hire Diane again. I consider myself very fortunate to be her client. I hope she will stick with me for the rest of my life.

My daughter used Amy for her divorce and she impressed me then. My daughter was left with a large bill and I paid it. Further issues arose and my daughter's children accused her with abuse. Child protective was involved. Her 12, 14 and 20 year old refused to return to her home. Knowing this Amy took the case giving my daughter hope when there was none. This cost thousands of dollars which I paid. Then my daughter had a foreclosure and we paid even more. Three years later and the case is not resolved and we were still paying. Amy was often late for court or just did not show up. Then I needed a lawyer for an inheritance case. Amy came to my home and while looking at my paperwork got all excited when she saw my murdered cousins name stating that serial killers are her hobby. She took the paperwork that I need for my case and promised to send it back. She never did nor did she contact me regarding if she would be taking the case. You can call and call her, email or and she never responds. Then came my husband who has some type of disorder where is is delusional, paranoid and hears voices. He was arrested and hired Amy. He thinks he I Nostradamus and she took $10,000 from him for a domestic violence/criminal threatening charge. The first hearing myvhusband sat scared asking "where is my lawyer". Amy nrmever showed up. The second hearing and my husband was left once again asking where she was She was 45 min late and he was returned to jail. He was then moved after 8 weeks in the mental health unit in solitary at York County Prison. He was then transferred to a mental health hospital. I spoke to the court and asked where I should forward his mail. They said Amy. I called and wrote emails and all were ignored. She is a horrible lawyer, always missing or late for court dates, doesn't respond to correspondence as simple as where to send his mail. Not only to I think she is a horrible lawyer, out for the money (who takes $10000 from someone so delusional he thinks he is Nostradamus?) and a terrible person in general. I will be issuing complaints to the Attorney General who already investigated her regarding her billing records.

I hired Amy Fairfield for a child custody case. Amy's only interest was to expedite the process and collect as much money for doing so as possible. After three court appearances and one mediation I am no further in the process than when we started. Amy is difficult to have a conversation with, she doesn't listen to your wants or needs, and all the times I met with her and she appeared in court on my behalf she was disheveled and distracted by something other than my case.

I could not be more pleased with the outstanding legal support provided by Elliott. He demonstrated remarkable efficiency and effectiveness throughout my partition action countersuit. This was an emotional matter for me and he helped me stay focused on the facts. Elliott does not suffer fools, which is a quality you want in your lawyer when you’re being billed by the hour. I used a little more than half of my retainer and felt every billable item was accurate and fair. What truly set him apart were the multiple strategies devised that I never would have thought of on my own, ultimately securing a 100% desired outcome. Choosing an experienced and decorated lawyer over someone new in the industry was clearly the right decision. Elliott's expertise and strategic thinking were invaluable, and I wholeheartedly recommend his services. If I ever need legal aid in the future, Elliott will be my first and only call.

I do not recommend hiring this lawyer. He is at the end of his career. I hired him for 7-8 months and he did nothing for me. He just kept charging me every month and when I needed to talk to him he never answered my phone calls or text messages or my e mails in a timely manner. In fact he ignored a lot of my concerns many times. Not only that, I felt that he was acting against my interests and he was not proactive to anticipate issue and let me know my options. He was all the time driven by the other party lawyers and going with the what the other party wants. I finally got fed up with the way that he was handling my case and fired him .

I would not recommend him to anyone. He does not return Phone calls or Emails. He was not in touch with the primary conservator(My Father) for almost 4 years and now he wants to express his opinions on issues that have been resolved between the primary conservator and myself. He is holding up a Home and Land Purchase I have tried to reach out to him and he refuses to return E-mail or calls. I have asked the Probate Judge to have him removed. He is an adviser and I have the ultimate choice to make with the aid of my primary conservator who is my father who is fully on board with the land home purchase. He had not contacted my dad in 4 years now he want to hold up everything that has been in motion and planning for a year. I appreciate his advice however at this time I feel as though it is not practical for my current situation. It was my awarded money and I want to own my own property and home and help other Veterans through a NON PROFIT I am in the process of forming. I engaged an independent lawyer who had no involvement in my case and have a complete understanding of my actions. I ask that he just sign the needed documents and allow the money transaction to occur. But again he wont communicate so I can get any resolution. The conservancy is projected to be dissolved in the spring of 2015 and he is still holding up my ability to purchase my own place to live and continue with the next chapter of my life . I was the one who asked for a conservator in the beginning of a legal settlement and it was understood that it was only temporary until I was able to process the legal situation and now I am now 45 years old and of sound mind fully capable of making my own decisions. All I ask is that he allow the primary conservator and myself to move on with the project at hand. But his failure to communicate properly is causing us to have no way to redress his concerns. Thank You

When I first contacted Randa she was sharing an office in Sanford with an experienced Lawyer. I obtained her services to deal with an ongoing Divorce. Randa was very concerned and helpful in the office but was meek and disheveled in the courtroom. Midway through the proceedings Randa informed me that she was going out on her own and opening up a sole law firm. I feel that this move was exicuted too early in her career. Randa always seemed like she was just behind the curve in the courtroom. She was drastically out classed my the oposing attorney in my case. She forgot to list evidence that the court needed to see and so it was dismissed. I do not know if I would have won with a different attorney but I do know I had a very slim chance with the attorney I chose. I will not recommend her to anyone that asks.

We could not have peacefully solved our difficult and puzzling problem without the help of Mr. Hawkins. I am very thankful our EAP (Employee Assistance Program) allowed us to have legal help. I learned about Mr. Hawkins through our EAP. When I called the EAP, I received a referral for Mr. Hawkins' services. Next I looked at Avvo.com to see what he was like. Because of the tone of his written response to a review on this page, I felt like he was smart and kind and I felt comfortable calling him. I am glad that I did. He is smart and kind and really wanted to help. Regarding our difficult situation, his legal services gave us the knowledge and tools we needed to solve the problem. I had another question for him after I had used the EAP benefits. Although, he didn't need to, he welcomed the call and gave me the extra help I needed. He surprisingly said to call anytime. Though it took months to come to a good solution, it is a relief to solve our difficult problem. Thank you Mr. Hawkins and thank you Avvo.com for providing this website. You all do awesome work!!!!

Mrs. Hawkins was my attorney in 2003-2004 when my ex-wife took me back to court after our 2001 New York divorce. As I understood it she was taking me back to court for a Child support and visitation revision. Which turned into those, as well as me doing all visitation transportation, 50/50 college expenses her going after my military retirement. I argued: When we originally divorced in New York, she moved back to Maine but now I have to all the driving? Since when does the court determine that parent must pay for a child to go to College? And I also most definitely argued that at the time of the Original NEW YORK Divorce my former spouse and I were both Active Duty Soldier in the US Army stationed at Ft Drum NY. By the time everything was finalized, Mrs. Hawkins had hired a so-called expert on military retirement pension, whom I had to pay $300 on top of Mrs. Hawkins Fee, to testify and instruct to court on the proper division of said retirement funds. As for transportation and College, he said that is just how it is. As for my military retirement, mind you, we were married 8yrs and 9mos of which my Ex was Active duty for 4yrs but she transitioned out of the Army before these proceedings were finalized. My Argument was that the time that we were both Active Duty Soldiers should have canceled out and if she as my spouse was entitled to any of my Military retirement then it should only by the 4yrs and 9mos while she was a civilian. To which both Mrs. Hawkins and the court said Her service did not count as she is no longer in service. It just seemed to me that Mrs. Brian C. Hawkins was, in fact, working for My Ex-Wife, not me. Fast forward a few years my ex-wife is now a government employee her time in the Army counts for her GS retirement. I filed paperwork with the court to review the retirement dispersion and the answer I got. After a review of the case, my Original NEW YORK Divorce was filed with the Maine District Court as a foreign divorce and with that Maine Does Not gain jurisdiction over the division of marital property. I would think that: Mrs. Hawkins should have known that, Maybe the so-called Expert on Military retirement might have known that, and I would have thought that the court should have known that. I didn't that's why I hired a Lawyer. As I approach retirement I wonder if the court is going to uphold the decision they made as a direct result of the Failures or All involved. Highest on my list, Brian C Hawkins.

Do you want an attorney that will tell you that your case is just as important as any of his others but will basically hang up on you to take his other calls? Well, this is your guy! He was court appointed to me and boy didn’t he show that he could care less about the disposition of my case. His tone was that of an annoyed person whenever I would speak to him about my case. Contact was minimal at best. I ended up letting another lawyer of the day represent me when he didn’t even show up to my court date. He was absolutely no help at all and the other, much younger attorney actually helped reduce my fines etc. I would avoid this attorney at all costs, because he will cost you...

Long-time clients. Her focus wasn't with us. Sloppy work (i.e. power of attorneys listing the wrong person) and unresponsive (i.e. unanswered emails). When we switched attorneys she seemingly wanted our business back but behavior didn't change.

This lawyer clearly works for the state. She doesn’t return phone calls..she doesn’t speak at hearings on your behalf..I had to ask at multiple zoom meetings if she was there because she never would speak up on my behalf. I’d ask her questions & I would get I don’t know or what does your paperwork say? I was mislead & misinformed by her & because of her lack of knowledge of the law or concern for my child’s well being their life is in danger. I again have to hire someone else to fix the under the table deal she did to lose my case that has more than enough evidence to keep them safe. Including CPS who was recommending my children to stay in my care. Do your work..research whom you hire for representation!! Do not hire her!

I think this lawyer isn't doing anything for me. All's she does is shows up to court and the family team meetings. She never contacts me or keeps me informed about anything going on in my case. She is on dhhs's side when it comes to my child. She told me right straight out if my kid was her kid she wouldn't fight for my child because my child has health conditions. I have been told by many people she is suppose to help me not the state because she is my lawyer. I think she should be spoken to and sanctioned for her actions. I as her client would like if she was on my side and working for me like she is suppose to not go against me and try to talk me into giving my child up.

I can hardly bring myself to write his name but I hired Gene Libby to represent me following my husband's arrest for domestic violence, and he ended up representing me in my divorce as well. I believe I was as traumatized by Libby in the four months he represented me as I was by my husband in the 29 years he abused me. I also was charged an obscene amount of money for this short time. If you are a woman and want a shred of kindness or compassion from your lawyer, or for your opinion to count and voice to be heard, stay far away from him. I hired a local attorney to represent me post-divorce and that made me realize how helpful a lawyer who is a decent person can be.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
