I use to work in Mr. Maizels office for another attorney, and I can tell you from experience he is one of the hardest working attorneys that you will ever hire. He studies the law books and asks for advice from the other attorneys in the office so he does do research on all of his cases!

I ve had Harvey as my attorney for multiple cases. From criminal matters to custody and support. His courtroom tactics put me in a good light and many favorable rulings. My criminal case that Harvey handled. I was indicted on four felony counts in Baltimore County with a very tough judge (Levitz). I was looking at 60 years. What Harvey did....was 1) during plea negotiations....he sent the State's Atty. to where I was sitting to introduce himself and shake my hand (a prosecutor?) to come outside the courtroom for negotiations, 2) Harvey settled the case with three of 4 charges dropped and plead to a misdemeanor and now my records are expunged. Harvey might not look like a winner....lol but he wins. This is just one of many cases I've had with Harvey. Oh, he will even eat lunch with you and treat you like a person. I like his style!!!!

Harvey Maizels is amazing. In 2005 Harvey got me a not guilty verdict for my 7th DWI. I did quit drinking completely through his rehabilitation process and owe my sobriety and freedom all to his magnificent rehabilitation and recovery process. He also handled my sons and other family members cases with the same positive results. I have just today 8/5/19 hired him again to handle my nephews case which is extremely sensitive and he is facing 75 years in prison. I have no reservations with hiring Harvey Maizels again, and thouroughly believe that Harvey Maizels is the best man for the job, and I would not even consider using any other representation. 5 stars all the way ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

They are fine for an uncontested low-conflict divorce. However, shop around for a contested high-conflict matter. Sara Gable's litigation skills are suboptimal for a high conflict contested case with aggressive opposing counsel. I had to hire a more experienced litigator to step in on an ad hoc basis to argue more complex motions and hearings.

Chris has been representing my case since I hired him as my WC attorney. I can truly say if WC tries not to work in your favor or slow with your payments; Chris jump right on the matter and get fast positive results. When calling his office I get to speak with my attorney and not an office personnel. He is always willing to talk without rushing through the conversation. I would highly recommend Attorney Christopher Marts.

A family member used her for a divorce and I tried to talk to several times. I called and left a message for her to call me, which she never returned my call. She also charge for every phone conversation every email and every thing her paralegal does. When you ask her to get records from the school where the child goes to she gets them and charges you for getting them and them never uses them. Right before the trial she want to be paid up front for the trial. Her reasons is if you are not happy with the results you won't pay her. Needless to say we did not want to pay her more money after what we paid her for doing nothing but paper work.

Mary worked on my child custody case for many years. She sucked my money dry and didn't solve the case after years of litigation. She scheduled many meetings, emails, paperwork, and wasted my time and money. She had issues with judges and worked her connections to control outcomes of what she wanted and to continue the case and drag it out so she received more money. A few of the lawyers worked together with her to push all contempts on the other party under the rug and wasted years and money. The other party walked away with no consequences. She was a complete waste of money. I would NOT recommend her.

This woman is horrible. She’s so unprofessional and disgusting. I watched this woman “lawyer” yell at our attorney after court. Absolutely gross. Her appearance is appalling and unprofessional. She doesn’t even brush her hair to appear in court. It’s an embarrassment and how anyone can actually hire this “attorney” is beyond me.  If I could give her less than one star, I would. Consider someone else who would actually look and act the part! Yuck!  I have never in my life seen an attorney act this way. Yelling at our attorney while her clients bullied us. Ewwww. This woman has no self control. How is she going to actually represent people when she can’t even control herself?

I had a good experience with Dan and his firm. He helped me with visitation issues. As a family law practitioner in Florida, I understand that family law cases can be costly. Dan worked diligently on my case. Unfortunately, my son's mother was extremely unreasonable and refused to agree with our reasonable requests, which forced us to go to a very expensive trial. In the end, Dan and I obtained the agreement at trial that we had been requesting all along, i.e., we won on all issues. I am happy with the outcome. I am still consistently paying my monthly bill to the firm, but they have not pressured me. My biggest advice to anyone seeking to hire their firm is make sure you can afford it. The firm was probably a bit outside my price range, but in the end they got the job done and I have a good schedule with my son. You can't put price tag on your relationship with your child.

I retained this firm with high expectations. I was assigned to this attorney and he seemed more interested in running up his billable hours than anything else. Despite my repeated instructions to him to curtail his billable time, he wound up charging me over $120,000 for a divorce; far more than twice the amount that opposing counsel charged the other party. I would not recommend him or this firm.

I was referred to Hurst Hessey by a friend of mine once my ex-wife decided she wanted to separate and divorce. From the beginning I found Hurst to be straightforward and honest. He stated from the beginning it would be a challenging case and it would be better to litigate the marital separation agreement out of the courtroom. What began as a case with very little in my favor — ended with an agreement that was in the best interest of my child and me. I know that if it was not for Hurst’s consistent presence and counsel the agreement would not have ended with the same result. Hurst always made me feel as if I was the most important case he had even though I knew he was quite busy. For that I am grateful.

Nice enough over the phone, I retained Hurst Hessey to help me with a custody case. Paid my retainer and met with him an hour the day before court to discuss the case. All down hill from there. We met at the Towson courthouse and he was late. He appeared disheveled and while I cannot prove it I would swear he'd been drinking. The fact of the matter is that I was going into court with an attorney that did not even know I had twins! Yes, he actually forgot that we were going to court for custody of my son and daughter TWINS. How do you forget that? Court was a joke, lasted a few minutes, and I accomplished less than I would have if I would've just filed some do-it-yourself forms on my own. Hurst walked me out to the garage after court and I asked if we were done and he told me "I think I might actually owe you some money." Weeks later I received another bill for over $900. To this day I still have no clue what this bill is for. For fear of an attorney's wrath I thought of paying it, but why, when I legitimately did not owe it? I received no follow up, no nothing. To this day Hurst Hessey refuses to return copies of documents to me that I provided to him at the start of the case. These were the only copies that I had. He has literally blackmailed me and said he will not return my documents until I pay this mystery balance. I've been waiting for my documents for 5 years, yes - FIVE YEARS. This is the most no-professional lawyer I have ever encountered. I asked for a break down of the services that created this bogus invoice and I was simply told that he did not have to furnish one because his books were in order. He may be good in other matters, but in terms of family law do yourself a favor and skip Hurst Hessey.

Stay away from him. It's impossible to communicate with him given his bad attitude, nasty temper and some sort of learning disability. He turned a successful case into a disastrous failure for no apparent reason. He did not discuss the pros and cons of his approach and at the end of the process his charges turned out to be more that what the opposing side had asked to settle! Then the final outcome was a financial disaster for which I have to pay with my really hard-earned money forever. He should retire or better, be disbarred. A combination of greed and bad attitude plus incompetence. There was absolutely no reason not to settle but he made his money and "took tremendous pleasure" in ignoring the opposing attorney (who was actually more professional than him) basically ignoring what was good for me but pleasing himself at my cost. The legal system is plagued by monsters like this who act with impunity.

She spoke in a manner so strong, I 100% thought she would be able to get me money and marital processions once the divorce was finalized. I am delighted to write this review for attorney Ms. Julie Christopher at Stein Sperling Bennett De Jong Driscoll for her excellent legal advice and for providing outstanding professional services related to my family matters. After having prior terrible experience with two family law attorneys practicing in Rockville, who drained me monetarily and emotionally, I contacted Julie. She was recommended to me by a friend who had high regards for her professionalism and in-depth knowledge in family matters. I must admit that in my very first meeting with Julie, I felt relaxed and comfortable. She attentively listened to my concerns, realized my painful situation, and assured me to get through the process as quickly as possible. In just a few months, Julie resolved all issues fairly and painlessly and finalized the divorce process. My overall experience with Julie was nothing but pleasant and positive. She is an incredibly hard-working highly knowledgeable attorney. On personal side, Julie is a very friendly and caring individual. I would highly recommend Julie to anyone looking for a dependable, reasonable, and highly qualified family law attorney with the highest level of integrity. SD

I can't imagine being more disappointed in an attorney, or any other service provider. This guy smiled and took my (and my family's) money, promised things to be included in my divorce settlement that somehow never made it in, placated me with things like "we can go back to the judge in a couple years and revisit the custody arrangement," which he only said to keep me quiet. When that time came, he would not even respond to messages or phone calls. My ex violated every premise of the divorce decree, over and over, caused enormous harm to my children, and this "attorney," once paid, never lifted a finger on their (or my) behalf again, even to answer a phone call or email. Literally ANY attorney is a better choice.

Jerry M. Gudis is possibly the most arrogant, unresponsive, rude and insensitive lawyer I have ever let handle a case for me. His office has no administrative services. Calling them is like playing Russian roulette. The man can display anger and pettiness in a major way. Fred is one of the most bloodsucking lawyers I have ever been represented by in my life. He actually referred to me as his residual income which ended up being almost 70k in work for a child custody case. He colluded with the lawyer we were going against by purposely not handing in a motion to compel into the courthouse( which is a block away from his office) but then gave the motion to compel to the opposing lawyer. So he gave his buddy the motion to compel, and then never handed it in through the courthouse to avoid getting his lawyer friend getting sanctions against him. He missed due dates for documents. He will try and back you into unwanted settlement, end then flip it on you saying you are being unreasonable. He will pass your work off to a less competent lawyer(which will still cost you 375$ hourly) but then will say he has to double check their work, costing you thousands in double payments. Spend your money elsewhere. He’s a terrible person and an even worse lawyer.

I used this attorney 3 times. The first time was a hands down case that could've been won without lawyers. The 2nd was a bankruptcy that he continued to tell me to ignore the bills coming in. Turns out, he not only was wrong... he didn't bother to look. I got sued after the bankruptcy for over $7000 (from an original $2500) because of his advice and he never took one ounce of responsibility for telling me it was included in the bankruptcy and to continue to ignore it, even after the other party filed in court. I used him again (before I realized all this mess was happening with the bankruptcy for family court issues. All I wanted was a SIMPLE custody order, child support amount, and any other tiny simple things that must be included in such an order. There was NOTHING at all somplicated in the case. He was non-attentive, missed over all the important details, and although I did get a bit more time with my children, all of the time he spent (eating up the retainer and more) supposedly coming to an agreement with the other party, it turns out that it was written up and signed by attorneys completely different than what we had agreed upon in the first place. My child support is higher than it legally should be. My visitation is less than it legally could have been. I owed him over $1000 more once it was all said and done and I left there with more questionable legal holes than I had before I had gone to court in the first place. So, now, the family court coordinator has suggested that we take this back to court for resolution. This attorney doesn't care about your case. He just wants to take your money, not even look at the documents (or at least barely brief them) that you send him, go to court, wisp you in and out and leave you with whatever you come back with. He does not HELP you He doesn't REPRESENT YOU. Not all court orders come out the way you want them to, but the attorney is supposed to REPRESENT their client. He DOES NOT@!!!!! BEWARE!!! If you use this attorney, don't expect representation!!

Be warned that this place DOES NOT offer a free 30 min consultation. When speaking with a paralegal, she was incredibly short and rude about the process and the fact that “Andrea hasn’t used Avvo since before the pandemic and they have no control over the info there”. Also, they expect you to pay $100 for a consultation and be on standby from 1-5pm for the call. What?! You want $100 and can’t even schedule a time for the call. Spend your time finding a law firm that speaks to potential clients in a professional manner- this is NOT the firm for that. I don’t need representation from a firm that can’t even be professional on a call intended to decide if I want to use them.

My issues with the corrupt Frederick County State's Attorney Office and the thieves employed by the Frederick Police Department Narcotics Unit began when a federal agency was at my home searching for business records and found $150,000 in cash I kept at home. The feds wanted to seize the money but didn't have paperwork to do that so they contacted Frederick Police and showed them some marijuana I had in the house. Frederick Police, drunk on greed, fell over themselves drafting an unlawful search warrant and took my marijuana and steal my money from the house. Within 20 minutes of first meeting Jake he turned to his partner Mr. Poffenbarger while reviewing my documents and said, "this warrant they used is no good." I knew I was in good hands. When the Frederick police timed my arrest to occur over the Memorial Day holiday Jake was in court having me released on bail first thing on Tuesday morning. Jake is extremely personal, professional and caring. Even though his son was born during this time he always gave my case his full attention, was well prepared and presented an commanding presence in the courtroom. He stuck with me through the whole case even after I brought on a Baltimore attorney because I was convinced all of Frederick was in on the corruption. The Baltimore lawyer never showed up at any of my court hearings, but Jake was there with me without fail every other month for a year. He would have to present me the ridiculous offer, made every time to just let Frederick keep the $150k they stole and all the phony charges against my wife and I would be dismissed. Thankfully, we stood strong with Jake on our side. One of the happiest days of my life was standing with Jake in Court as he made the fat, smelly, money-grubbing prosecutor Colleen enter a Nolle Prosse on every charge in her bogus indictment. The very next week he forced the city to return all of the money they had stolen and my prescription Xanax. This was amazing because these corrupt government agencies can mount a civil case against the money even after they lose in criminal court. They just didn't have any fight left in them after the year Jake spent embarrassing them in Court. I'm happy to report those crooks didn't see a dime from their disgusting escapades. If I were ever accused or investigated for a crime, served a peace order or had a divorce or custody issue I know the first and only thing I need to do is call Jake Craven, Esquire.

We hired this lawyer December 2012 for a child support case, we paid him at our 1st visit. He told my fiancée and I (his clients) he would file the court papers within a few days of our meeting to get the situation resolved. Our meeting was December 2012 Mr. Berry filed for a court date July 2014 which is definitely not a few days it's 2 and a half years and the whole time he kept telling us it was because the Baltimore City courts are so crowded. We understood they are crowded but not a 3 and half year wait crowded, he procrastinated and was dishonest the whole time in which the truth was he hadn't even made an attempt to file for years after we paid him $1,500 at our initial visit. Well 3 and a half years later we finally received a court date in August 2015 because Peter Berry had just filed the year before. Part of the reason for the court date was a modification which Mr. Berry never even mentioned to the judge. I know for a fact that the paperwork was filed by Mr. Berry July 2014 because I called the court house and it is also clearly stated on Maryland case search.

Met with him several times, he makes you do all his foot work, get all his information together for his case. He is very smart mouthed and rude. Flirtatious to the women and bills you months late. Would not recommend him to my worst enemy

Rouse is to the point and doesnt beat around the bush. He is very good at what he does and will fight for what you want, instead of what he thinks will be the easiest to win.

Met with Joseph T. Rouse about handling a case. He refused the case, which is he’s prerogative, but before we left he was extremely unprofessional by making some very rude/smart mouth remarks. So sorry I ever called he’s office.

Failed to meet deadlines, poor communicator (could not provide clear explanations, did not keep client updated on case status, average 2 week response time), inefficient office (relied on USPS for account status, no paralegal, documents not tracked accurately).

The firm was highly recommended to represent me in my divorce. My case must have been too small. In the 30 days they represented me the first outgoing letter to the opposing counsel was sent to my son’s email address. He called me and asked if I had gotten it and of course I had not. A second communication to the opposing counsel on March 23, 2023 was copied to a misspelled email address so I did not receive it. I was informed of this email on April 6, 2023 when my attorney returned my March 31, 2023 phone call and April 3, 2023 email. I could not believe that it took two weeks to find out about this misdirected email and terminated their services at the end of the phone call. Three hours later the attorney forwarded a copy of her March 23, 2023 email to my correct email to show me that she had sent me a copy on March 23. The March 23 email showed my misspelled email. I emailed my attorney back pointing out the errant email and heard nothing back until March 12 in an email to my correct email address sending the termination letter and final billing and a copy of the check for the remaining balance left of my retainer. Only one problem with the termination letter and check. ..the mailing address had the incorrect street name. Extremely unprofessional and in the end made no progress toward finalizing my divorce at a cost of over $3,700.

Showalter was recommended to me and I hired him in August 2022 to expedite the approvals to begin construction on my home on the Eastern shore. After the initial consultation where he sounded very confident that he could help me, it was next to impossible to get in touch with him. It was to the point that I was calling the office on a daily basis to try to speak with him. On the rare occasions that he did get back to me, he'd say he was working on everything and would be going to the next county meeting to get approvals. After each meeting, I'd check in to see the progress and each time he'd say he missed the meeting and would go to the next one. Finally, I called the county who said nothing had ever been submitted by him and no meetings were set up. I even offered him to drop the case if he was too busy to which he said he could handle it. After four months of being strung along with absolutely no progress, I found a new lawyer who has done more in the two weeks I've been with him.

Met with hr regarding Power of Attorney for mother-in-law who was going downhill. Both myself and husband have sent frequent emails to the email address through which she contacted us, with no response to any of these emails across the past 7 months. Mother-in-law now in rehab after falling and breaking hip. Still can't get a copy of the POA so I can handle things that need to be handled. Very frustrating that she never provided a phone number in her emails, and only have an email address which she apparently doesn't review/answer.

Would not mail me documents after divorce was final. Wanted me to drive to her office to pick up papers. I offered to pay for the postage since I work 8-5 and the firm is open 9-4. She Sent documents which I had to sign for, but unfortunately they were addressed to my married name, not my newly changed name, which she was aware of. Invoice says correct name, address label is wrong. Need to go back on a saturday with divorce decree to prove who I am. Once divorce was final, she was impossible to get a hold of regarding FERS, never received anything from ex regarding COBRA so I went without insurance for five months; people she hired to handle my ex's retirement disbursement were a nightmare, filling out wrong forms. I finally had to contact all agencies on my own. When I contacted her because my "ex" had not followed the Judge's order about taking his name off the title of my car; no reply; When emailed regarding my ex ignored the judge's order for my ex to take my name off a loan for land that my husband got in the settlement, no reply. I had to handle all of this myself. I did get an email reprimanding me for "upsetting" her staff by a voicemail I left, I had to remind her that I DID NOT WORK FOR HER. I trusted her to help me. Big mistake on my part.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
