I hired her after a $35.oo fee consultation. She was late for the consultation. Discussing the Temporary Peace Order where I was the Respondent, I told her I had surveillance cameras that videotaped the exact interaction between my neighbor, the Petitioner, and myself where he claimed I was harassing him and that proved the very opposite. She told me to be sure to bring the taping of the encounter to the hearing. She also told me to prepare all my materials. She never made copies of the peace order during the consultation nor did she give me any literature or cards. She held my copy of the order the entire time. She told me she would represent me for a fee of $700 and I agreed.I was to meet her by 9AM prior to the hearing. I didn't notice that she kept my one copy of the order and that I was left without anything including the location, court house, judge, etc. The next day I discovered that she did not return the copy of the order to me after the consultation. When I desperately tried to contact her and she was totally unavailable. I called her partner, (no answer), the court houses,(closed for the day) . All I knew was that I absolutely had to be at the hearing by 9AM! And that was all I remembered. I was unbelievably upset. That night I did my best to tape the surveillance video with a USBPort but could not play it on my computer. I am not computer knowledgeable and was up for hours. I got very little sleep. My spouse is ill but does not get picked up until after 9AM So I had to prepare both of us. after an almost sleepless night with No breakfast, no medicine. The taxi dropped us off at one court house but it was the wrong one. There they were finally able to find my name and direct me to another courthouse blocks away. We had to walk in the heat and humidity for blocks and arrived at the proper one just before 9AM. I was so upset and scared. She was there and did not apologize. She told me she had sent an email at 8AM when we were already outside waiting for the taxi. I was completely frazzled and distraught. During the hearing my neighbor and his neighbor witnesses made me out to be a harasser who yells and curses. The facts are just the opposite. She never really challenged them, asked them any particular questions, etc. When I was at the stand in my lethargy I could barely remember what happened and she never prodded my memory to help me out. I did make a comment that showed my frustration with my neighbor and my lawyer said "You gave as good as you got, didn't you?" I responded positively when i it was not true. It was and always has been my neighbor who is the harasser. I have had to call the police on him for all kinds of crimes and misdemeanors. He is a bully and the other two neighbors have had the police called on them, as well. He is mad because we put no trespassing signs on our fence. She came to enjoy her day and was not prepared. Although it softened the effect her comment made me agree that this confrontation was as much my fault as my neighbor's. She made me come across as the terrible person. Had she been the lawyer I deserved this was when she should have brought out the video that would have exonerated me. This was the very video she told me to bring that I had spent hours preparing for the hearing. The judge found no harassment and closed the case in my favor, no thanks to Ms Wallace. By the way ,she never sent that email she claimed to have sent on the morning of the hearing. She lied to me. I do not trust her and would never recommend her to anybody.

During mediation, this lawyer was very focused on a "successful" outcome, which is good. However, she did not pay attention to details of the case, and her method of reaching resolution was to berate and sometimes bully me as a client, so that would concede things I was not comfortable with. While I am glad the situation is closed, I feel that the lawyer's approach was neither collaborative nor positive. Also, her rate is very expensive, given that she was not fully engaged in the process.

Jim has a very good understanding of the MD family law and provided solid legal advice. However, he displayed a bit of condescending tone at times and Jim and his associate, Thomas DeGennaro made a few billing mistakes. They included duplicate charges so please pay attention to the details of the invoice before submitting payments. When I questioned the bill, they admitted their mistakes and resolved the billing, but they charged me for the time Jim and Thomas reviewed the bill and adjusted the invoice. Thus, at the end, I was charged for the same amount as they initially charged me with duplicate charges. Jim' explained to me that his time is billed regardless of the activity even if that is to fix his mistakes. Lastly, I asked them to please check with me before moving forward with the next step or doing the research, but despite my request, Jim/Thomas carried on with the research. The general theme was because they know what they are doing, they expected me not to have a say. I ended up firing them. They are both good lawyers but they lack client centric mindset. They may treat their high-paying clients more favorably, but even smaller clients can turn into great referral source in the future.

Matt is professional and friendly. I believe he is liked by the legal community including judges. Unfortunately, his court room demeanor is more on the side of meek than aggressive. True story, my ex-wife had never made custody exchanges easy. We had two boys. My ex-wife refused to let the oldest return on our exchanges, then kicked him out of her house within a year. After I had both boys back with me for a month, my ex-wife took my youngest away and would not allow him to be exchanged. I hired Matt and we went in for an Emergency Hearing. The judge says, well what if he did abuse the child? Matt says nothing, just shrugs his shoulders. Swear. Not, "the ex has shown a past history, the ex has been removed from the house for child abuse and domestic violence in the past" nothing. Just shrugs his shoulders. After we left the courtroom he scolded me for wearing a dress shirt, dress pants, and a tie without a jacket. No apologies for lackluster performance.

My husband was the victim of a vicious assault. State Attorney Shane Nolan was on top of my husband’s case and kept us informed throughout the process. Ms.Stephanie in the attorneys office followed up and reached out during this ordeal and at no point did I feel we weren’t a priority for them. While they take on an enormous amount of cases and I did have to follow up on some things, which we should also advocate and stay up to date on things and not let them take it all on , they did an incredible job and justice was served for my husband. I see some reviews that people didn’t get a phone call or an email. We never received anything in writing but again we the victims must advocate and do the work too, case search is free, the dockets are posted the day before and court dates can be found online, we can not expect the States Attorney’s office to be our personal assistant. Also for other victims please know you’re not alone the MD Crime Victims Resource Center was a great help as well in our case. The Anne Arundel County States Attorney’s Office did exceptional and we thank you!

Don't get robbed at gun point by a state attorneys father. They'll give you petty sentence instead of an apology. I got robbed of at least 1100.00 in tools, developed ptsd, got a 30 day sentence, one year probation, an appeal bond paid with no release of incarceration and no refund for that bond either. The guy even thanks his daughter (states attorney which I don't have to name), for the verdict in his victim advocate speech. I acquired testimony. It's all there! Sorry for giving one star on the review. This organization deserves less in my opinion.

Mr. Baumohl, "assisted" me in my divorce case. My divorce should have been a simple case since my ex-wife, and I did not have assets to distribute. He milked me for money when this type of situation could have been handled for cheap. I paid $5,000 for his services and had to pay an extra $2,000 when the escrow ran out. Again, for a case simple and not complex. Additionally, when creating the settlement agreement, he put the wording vague and ambiguous to have me contact him in regards to the agreement. Doing this requires me to call/ email him for clarification. In return, I get billed for correspondences. He is brilliant....so brilliant; he knows ways to get money from you. From what I can determine, Mr. Baumohl is more worried about his bank account than the client. He will prolong a case to milk more money out of you. If I knew what I know now, I would have avoided this attorney from the beginning. Please, by all means, avoid using this attorney. Unless you like to spend your money with minimal results.

Represented me in a divorce case several years ago. Despite meeting with me three times for a total of six hours AND billing me another three hours for "preparation," he fumbled extensively in the courtroom. Asked me just before hearing to write him a sheet of notes of my issues. Didn't present properly labeled exhibits. Couldn't remember which questions to ask me or my ex-wife while on the stand. A horrible attorney whose focus is billing and receiving payment for inept services.

This lawyer is supposed to be representing me ..hes been on my case for 2 years and has literally filed nothing on my behalf ..in 2 years ..not one filing ..I did not request a lawyer ..i wanted to proceed Pro Se.in the first convo ..he was told to turn over all my filings i was not giving him any authorization to view them or do anything else .which he did . then..he forced himself on my case against my will despite having zero info on the case because they had been turned over . Mr Bookhard still went to court and stood in like he was my lawyer ..against my will ... As a result i have lost all rights to my daughter whom ive never met along with other things . ..ive asked him to resign several times ...he has refused ..and continue to obstruct justice . he lied last week told me he filed things and did not . i have the emails to prove it . .. DO NOT HIRE THIS CROOK he has the govt kidnap children to help his lawyer friends ... Report this man immediately he needs to be disbarred.

I totally agree with the other review. This guy was appointed as public defender in my case. Nothing he said as to the outcome or my sentence was the ending result. In fact, the ending result was NOWHERE in the ballpark of what Bookhard had been saying. I could have received a much harsher sentence but I actually think that the judge and the Prosecutor felt sorry for me because he was totally inept. Even stumbled over his words in court. I would NEVER recommend this lawyer for any legal matter.

Lack of luster for my case. Boasts his legal knowledge even if wrong on basic principals on child support. States he or his staff will fix or correct issues with child support... My issue cost me thousands in fees to him. Thousands of backed child support because of his legal advice to send money directly to my ex instead of child support. Cost me a boat load. I was in fear of losing my license and other professional license BC of his legal direction. Don Pallett stated he would fix the child support issue he never did.... It went on for months till in had to take off work and go there myself. Magically I corrected it within 45min. In two years he could have walked into the office and fixed the issue directly at child support. The staff there atbchild support were appalled to hear his advice and to see that I was charged for him contacting there office numerous times. According to there records he never once came in. In addition to that one 10 min phone call was made and another that lasted less than 2 min. My new attorney was shocked and said he told you damn near everything was backwards.... My files when given to my new representation were in no rhyme for reason order and several key documents simply were missing. My advice avoid Mr. Pallett for your piece of mind and finances.

Mr. Dore knows the law (I think) but is a terrible lawyer. He showed up for every meeting unprepared, including with the opposing party and for a court hearing. He could never retain the facts about my case, and as a result misrepresented some details about my case in court. I don't know if he has too many cases or just can't retain facts and/or can't be bothered to learn details about a case, but he was truly a detriment to my case and resulted in thousands of dollars of unnecessary legal fees, some of which I was able to get written off by his firm.

When you hire an attorney, you hope they will enter the battle by your side and will fight for your rights with all of their might. Not being familiar with family law, I was too focused on the battle to question the “warrior” fighting by my side. After a lengthy war with my ex, I had to crawl away. Ms Unglesbee had not won a single fight and charged me more than $20,000. At the recommendation of a good friend, I asked another attorney to review my case. After reading everything, he said, “Ms. Unglesbee lacked a firm grasp of family law, lacked creativity, and to be honest, she buried you… Ms. Unglesbee allowed the courts to violate federal and state law without a single response.” It was too late to correct any of her mistakes. As a direct result of her inept council, I will be forced to live with the inequitable results for the rest of my life. Another person I know was also represented by her… They suffered the same results.

I was rear ended over 3 years ago now, and this case is still going on. Bartlett does not like returning phone calls. He is not an aggressive lawyer, but a very passive one. If you want someone whom will DEFEND YOU, look somewhere else. If you just want anybody cheap, again look somewhere else. My case was open and shut, yet it hasn't been, because of him. And he made decisions without my consent or knowledge, so I've filed complaint with md courts as well. Do your self a favor, hire anyone else.

I hired this lawyer when my lawyer failed to show up for me in courts. Strimber is fond of saying "only one parent should have the child(ren)." Though I enlisted him, he chose to side with my husband, a lawyer himself, and his lawyer, to go into Judge courtrrom without me and say I was "having a fit" after which it had been reported the Ethics Commission was called. Would have been nice if this guy tapped me on the shoulder for my own hearing! Nonetheless, after behaving so badly, Strimber decided to bill me an extra $500 for "research"--AND have his wife/secretary return a different audio tape than I loaned to him--she sent a blank. The Jury's still out--and you will be, too, if you hire this man instead of a proper attorney.

Do not use Jasen Adams. I cannot stress this enough. Mr. Adams does not practice; he malpractices. The statements and examples shown below are from verifiable events. 1. Mr. Adams does not follow up with clients supposedly because he is busy with cases, but he also misses court deadlines. In my case, he missed two key deadlines. If you cannot read a scheduling order and do not enjoy chasing down your own lawyer, give careful consideration to hiring Mr. Adams. His secretary can easily keep you apprised at no cost to you. 2. Mr. Adams increases his rates exponentially, but he fails to send notices about said increases. I feel he charged me for empty hours he could not fill with legitimate client work, basically because he has few clients. 3. Mr. Adams should send monthly invoices, but he does not do so. Yet the language in his engagement agreement gives the client a one-month window in which to contest the current invoice. In my case, Mr. Adams continually told me that absolutely nothing was going on in my matter, which told me that most of my retainer was intact; no bill=no charges, right? Mr. Adams did fabricate invoices when he was required to produce them, still claiming he had treated his fictional invoices as correct because I did not contest them. I cannot contest invoices I do not receive. Mr. Adams has no problem “fabricating” in general. He is passive-aggressive. 4. Mr. Adams does not keep accurate records of client payments. In my case, Mr. Adams claimed I owed him money, and that I had not paid amounts I knew I had paid him. Again, he also did not send invoices and did very little work. My retainers should have been substantially intact. He was quite comfortable as long as I could not locate statements for a credit card I had not used in years. Mr. Adams may be surprised to know that I finally found the statements in storage, and the statements are incontrovertible evidence that Mr. Adams lied to me and to others; he charged my card thousands of dollars for which he has never given an accounting. He is on record as stating I never paid him these amounts. His are the only transactions on these statements. Mr. Adams stole from me, kept inaccurate records and violated his ethical responsibility to use an escrow account. 5. When Mr. Adams his invoices, he charged me $100-or-more per hour for paralegal duties he claimed his secretary/receptionist had performed. There are no legitimate paralegal tasks on my bill such as legal research, subpoenas, reviewing medical records or preparing legal documents. Xerox copying and hole-punching are not paralegal tasks. If you are desperate enough or naive enough to consider Jasen D. Adams as your advocate, don't. He will look you in the eye, eff up your case and rob you blind all at the same time. Staring at my credit card statements and the lies Mr. Adams had the gall to put in writing, I will be seeking a refund of the money he somehow lost through attorney oversight channels or the court or the Maryland Attorney Grievance Commission. Do not put yourself in my shoes. You will be sorry. The most disturbing aspect of this is that Mr. Adams is the managing partner over a group of attorneys, so he can modify every bill that goes out of his office to his own benefit. Beware.

June Dillard, former NAACP president (unbelievable) main objective was to squeeze as much money out of me, her clients as possible, while also tying me up in the legal system. I hired June Dillard for a criminal matter. I had evidence to prove my innocent, but June Dillard constantly refused to present the evidence to the court and request that all charges be dropped. Instead June Dillard worked with the prosecuting attorney, in hope of having a trial. Rather than see the case dismissed, June Dillard constantly invented new ways to add additional charges that were outside the initial contract. Charges that did not exist. June Dillard requested an additional $1500 after having been paid $2,500.00 stating “here is a charge I did not know about". After I proved to her that the charges brought forward had been given to her upon our initial consultation, she angrily quit by not showing up for the court case. June Dillard negative actions left me at disadvantage, without a lawyer to verify a previous judge ruling. I was arrested, held etc. it took thousands of dollars and my hiring another lawyer in order to clear up the matter that June Dillard had created out of spite and greed, and it was frighten to see such injustice. June Dillard has over 20 years of experience in law. she know that the person she's basically conned and left tied up in the system would likely be too overwhelmed to do anything but walk away. I think it great that such a site like "Avvo "exist. It could possibly spare another individual from such an unfortunately unfair fate.

First and foremost this attorney failed to keep appointments over 80% of the time. When my abusive ex husband took custody away from me to withhold my children from me, she advised me to move out of state when I was on physical disability with no income and no means to travel, and she refused to ask for any financial support or maintenance from him. This also left me without any means to be able to get back to Maryland to see my children for a long while. Then when a friend offered to help put up money to travel, my ex broke the visitation order 9 TIMES, refusing to allow me to see my children the amount of times I could have. MS. Hansen refused to file for contempt and when all funds were gone were I couldn't get back and I was panicked, she decided this was going to be too much work for her so she dropped my case, leaving me with NO ATTORNEY AT ALL, and I had no means to see my children at all for over 2 years being left without any money or any way to do anything about seeing them!!! She had over 200 hundred pages of evidence of physical, emotional, psychological, social, and financial abuse to my children and myself. She didn't bring up ANY OF IT TO THE JUDGE AT THE FIRST HEARING, NOR ASK FOR ANY OF THE VALUE OF OUR NEARLY $300,000 HOUSE WITH OVER $50,000 IN EQUITY, NOR THE ROUGHLY $10K IN ASSETS TO GO TO ME BUT TOLD THE JUDGE WE WERE NOT ASKING FOR THAT!!!!????...which could have helped me for travels to see my children minimally. As well as according to her inheritance IS MARITAL PROPERTY (despite Maryland law states it IS NOT MARITAL PROPERTY), so she said he can keep that as well! She is crooked and my counselor for PTSD from all the abuse I endured for 15 years from my ex advised I write this review to save anyone else from the nightmare Me. Ferris Hansen put me through. SHE KNOWS NOT A THING ABOUT DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, AND BELEIVES THE ONLY THING IMPORTANT FOR THE MOST FIT PARENT IS WHO EARNS THE MOST INCOME AND NOTHING ELSE MATTERS AT ALL TO HER!!!... ATTORNEYS ARE EXPENSIVE AND PLEASE DON'T WASTE WHATEVER YOU HAVE ON THIS WOMAN WHERE YOU COULD END UP IN MY SHOES!!!....Please find one who listens to your concerns and will work hard to help you and your children if applicable!!!!....Ms. Hansen will most likely NOT!!!

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
