This is by far the worst experience I’ve had dealing with any “professional”. I was a paralegal for years and worked with and dealt with plenty of attorneys. None were like this! I spoke with Amanda only one time briefly before the trial and she was in the middle of a big case so she wasn’t as attentive. I emailed her before my trial to see is she needed anything from me or needed to meet. She said no (This was a visitation case and I hired an atty because previously the judge would not hear anything I was trying to say and I could not fail my child). Amanda came walking in after trial was supposed to start and sat away from my sister and I, because she was working on another case. She was so unprepared and her focus was on a “bigger” case. She even asked the judge to step out to call her office about a different case. She had no idea it was a trial (I told her that when we first met) and how unfit my child’s dad was. My child is in therapy because of his dad but the judge ruled on the fact they we were BOTH great parents. I paid Amanda every dime she asked for without question and I couldn’t afford it. When expressing my concerns with her she wasn’t even apologetic. She couldn’t hold herself accountable. She made it a yelling match. She even made the statement “I hate to say it, but this is what happens when you lawyer up”. Technically I didn’t have a lawyer present. She kept telling the judge “well I had no idea” and “I just recently got this case” (she had it for over 2 months). Amanda ask my child’s dad one question “what county do you stay in” and she asked me a few, but it’s what I wrote on her pad during trial. She told me she didn’t know anything about my case because I didn’t meet with her. Told me she is available every Saturday for her clients. How was I supposed to know that if I’ve never been told? Even when I asked her before trial, she never mentioned it. I’m disappointed that money I didn’t have went in her pockets for nothing. However, I’m more hurt because she failed my child. Thanks Amanda!

Exactly what the title says. I've had dealings with attorneys for years for business and never have struggled so hard for communication. We even scheduled a set time to chat, confirmed the time in two emails and then was stood up and never really got an apology or any acknowledgement of the issues it created. I always like to feel that maybe an interaction happened at a hard time (End of 2020 and we're all stressed) but when you are dealing directly with things that have profound effect on someone's life, good communication shouldn't be a compromise.

One of the best criminal defense attorneys in Davidson and Williamson county. I'm fortunate to know Mr. King and to have been able to work with him. He helped me out BIG TIME when I needed a lawyer. I'd gladly recommend Greg to anybody looking for an attorney. He does a lot of DUI cases, theft, drug charges, juvenile defense and pretty much anything criminal defense related. He REALLY knows his stuff. Referred him to friends and family who have used him recently and they all have had great experiences in criminal and civil matters. From all of us - thank you Greg!

Tarsila Crawford is an excellent attorney and you will be very impressed with her insightful knowledge, responsiveness and professionalism! She is a pleasure to work with and we were very lucky to have her on our side! Prior to meeting Tarsila, we were somewhat lost, had all sorts of questions and concerns about the case and didn't really know where to start. She truly listened to our concerns, made sound recommendations and answered many questions for us. Not to mention, we were on a very tight deadline and she made it happen. We honestly couldn't have asked for a better attorney! Thank you, Tarsila!

I have gone through a hard year of trying to get a divorce and while my divorce is still not over I would not have wanted to go through this without Tarsila in my corner. She is always fair and has helped to keep me grounded ( even during my many melt downs and freak outs). She always keeps me up to date on all information and is very fact based which I love as I believe a divorce should be about the facts. She will even respond to my many emails after hours and while away on vacation (again even if it's just to calm me down or help me understand something). While no one gets married with the desire to get divorced if that does happen and you want someone who will be in your corner who is truely fair and gives you realistic expectations based on your situation she is the lawyer you want. I can't relay my gratitude enough for her services this far even though it's not over yet.

Miss Blair met with me for information to prepare a will for me. I picked up the will when it was completed and had it witnessed and notarized. When I read the will she had written, it was six pages long and there were several spelling and punctuation errors on every page of the will. It made me wonder how many content errors had been made. Find someone else to handle your legal work.

The Firm was hired for a divorce. Didn't seem to feel like they fought the case for me, just went through the motions. Then bill after bills. Felt like i was not a client but a place where they could keep asking for money. Never got a real breakdown. Even went back to them after divorce for advice on child support and all they wanted was retainer fee. Not saying I dont understand about retainer fees, just feel like the divorce ppwk wasn't detailed enough where i have to keep going back to pay for any adjustments. Should have nail all that down in the first place. Guess 40k- 50K not enough for them.

During a phone consult with Helen Rogers, I was sincerely polite and explained my unlikely family law situation. Ms. Rogers told me that I should have called her when I had major trouble with my previous lawyer in June 2019. I did not even even know Ms. Roger’s name in until August 2019. After Ms. Rogers stated that she would not help me, and instead of answering my questions on a referral, she cut me off, she simply said, "I cannot help you." and then proceeded to hang up the phone on me for no good reason. I was in shock as I stared at my phone. I was not rude to Mr. Rogers at all. I just wanted to ask her for a recommendation on a referral. She never gave me that chance. Before and after this call, I have spoken with over a dozen lawyers regarding my case. I was never treated even close to as badly a Ms. Helen Rogers treated me during my consult. I have no interest in hiring an attorney that has zero sympathies for someone’s plight. She treated me badly without just cause. She does not know me, so why would she not treat someone else so badly that she knows nothing about? In my opinion, Ms. Rogers’ unchecked behavior reflects badly on her firm, Rogers, Kamm & Shea. I cannot give any level of recommendation for this lawyer or her level of client (customer) service. I would never hire this lawyer, nor am I able I recommend this lawyer or her firm, Rogers, Kamm & Shea, to anyone seeking family law representation in his or her future.

Helen is the best divorce lawyer I know of in the Nashville area. If there was a better one I would have hired them. I was personally in divorce related litigation for years including numerous appeals. Trial after trial year after year and we never lost on any issue. In my business I work with lawyers all over the country on a daily basis in all areas of civil litigation including divorce, custody, support , abuse, etc. Helen and her team have seen it all and done it all. I did not have to pay for their education. Helen was very efficient and accessible. She worked to keep the bill down by using less costly staff as much as possible but when it came time for depositions or trial I felt like I was the only client she had. Most importantly Helen was always kept the focus on what was in the best interests of the children and very effective in obtaining that through her understanding and knowledge of the law, the rest of the players in the litigation and who the most credible experts were. Helen worked aggressively and wisely for settlement and fearlessly and prudently in trial and depositions. Helen and her team's work was the bright spot in an otherwise bad situation.

I retained Pam to represent me for an order of protection and a divorce filing. For both hearings she would not return calls or meet with me until one day prior and so was not well prepared for the case. When we did meet, she gave me a list of twenty or so documents to come up with by the very next day, in triplicate, which I was unable to do. When I emailed her documents she would frequently say she never received them and she showed up to court late and without any evidence. She would file things without consulting me so I never knew what was going on in my case. She suggested strategies that sounded good but then never followed through with them. She consistently responded to my voice mails and emails by emailing me with "so it sounds like you're saying…" and then following with the exact opposite of what I had said. I would not recommend this attorney.

I hired attorney Corletra Mance on February 1 2019 as my attorney . She is Very unprofessional she doesn’t deserve a 1 star rating. I am disabled and hired her to help me get split custody and to save my son’s life. She stated 1,500 dollars retainer fee that she allowed me to break down to three payments. I started first payment on February 1 2019 and finished payment plan on April 5 2019. I filed the petition on my own also she didn’t show up to court didn’t send someone else from her firm I had to speak for myself. Since I felt like she wasn’t doing anything to help me so I fired her and now she stated that I still owe her $1,500 dollars for the retainer fee. Thank God I kept copies of my receipts. I wouldn’t recommend her at all to anyone!

We hired her because of her reputation for providing the best work for making sure children's best intrests always came 1st. She failed to contact eye witnesses, did not keep us updated on court dates, and became hostile to us in the middle of a hearing. These failures caused a child to be separated from her family for a minimum of 14 weeks. Upon hiring a new lawyer, we discovered paperwork she had never given us and undisclosed meetings with opposing counsel.

I see the: Stick to the facts. Reviews that contain unsupported accusations will not be approved. Hmm I wonder why my other detailed review was taken down? Everything that I stated in my prior review was matter of fact. Nevertheless, if you have no problems with your attorney not knowing what's going on in your case to the point of placing the WRONG names on your petitions, if you don't mind your attorney making deals with the opposing party against your will, or just not showing up for court at ALL then this attorney is for you. She quotes you an initial retainer just to get you in the door then lets you know before stepping into court that another retainer is due or she'll walk out, etc..... it's just one hurdle after another. If the "justice" system isn't bad enough to navigate through, it's even worse when your attorney is clueless and selfish.

I hired this firm to represent me on an appeal concerning a ruling in juvenile court. I won the ruling but the attorney by the name of Emily Pfeiffer, who is no longer active at that firm did not follow up to see where I stood on child support payments, and when the final order was drafted the court was under the misconception that I owed $10,000 and back child support which was paid at the end of the year prior which put me back in a position to owe child support arrears that I’ve paid already. Also, I was very detailed at what I wanted because opposing party was going after me for $20,000 in attorney fees I also wanted appealed and council representing this firm did not follow up, but left me in a position to get garnished by opposing counsel and insisted on me paying my $800 balance with them , when the job was not finished. Rob turner also garnished my wages for the remaining balance and left me in debt, leaving me to do my own footwork and prove to the court that my arrears have been paid would cost me three years of wasted time. I reached out to the firm to have this taken care of on a walk-in visit and a lady by the name of Chelsea Stevenson literally lied to me for six months straight after I explained to her in detail what was going on and had me under the impression things were getting resolved when they weren’t. After I had proven my case to the court as of recent I sent the firm the updated order to show them. I wasn’t lying and have not heard from any of them, that is “Rob Turner“ and “Chelsea Stevenson“ who used a personal matter concerning my ex-wife as leverage from me not contacting her and said I was harassing her after she surrendered her personal number to me to keep in contact with her. Absolutely nothing got done, and this firm is horrible in representing anyone, but will take your money immediately. I paid the full balance for 3 court appearances on my appeal in the dollar amount of $4000. This firm should be shut down by the bar of Nashville literally . They’re a bunch of liars and do not have the people in their best interest. They care nothing of their reputation and left me in shambles. Rob Turner is a crook and from what I was told he had a life-threatening accident from falling off of balcony, it’s not to wonder if someone threw him off with how his firm conducts business.

Go find other representation. Do not let the urgency of your situation put yourself into a position where you end up further taken advantage of by this law firm. $11k down the drain, crappy advice, lack of engagement & communication, missed deadlines and they contributed to prolonged suffering. The attorney I was assigned was nowhere to be found unless it was to bill another retainer and receive that $$$. Do NOT hire these people. They will manipulate you and string you along to get more money for themselves with zero results for your case. They did it to me and every other person here warning you. This office is also known as Nashville Law Offices, PLLC, Turner Law Offices, and Robert J. Turner & Associate.

I find it odd that the only 2 positive reviews are just a day apart. I hired Bohn last year. I met her in that same library parking lot as I see others did. It should have been a red flag, no office. I asked her for a copy of our contract every single month. I finally received a copy 6 months later and it was illegible! I fired her just just about that time. This was just one problem. Bohn goes away for 10 days at a time not answering her phone. She just doesn't care. She had surgeries and can't let you know ahead of time either. She lost evidence and she is extremely dishonest. Monies you pay her come up missing. She sends invoices that she totals up hundreds over what they should so keep an eye on that. I had to hire another attorney and he picked it up from her house. In my file she had another persons evidence and my file stunk like cigarettes from her house/office. She is filthy and sloppy with your files. You should ask to see her desk before you hire her, OMG! She is so unorganized! I didn't return her call one day and she threatened to send the Sheriff to my home. She was lying just to threaten me. I could go on but my best advice to everyone is to keep looking. All these years in business and she only has 2 positive reviews? She actually brags about her 29 years in law but from the looks of it, they have not been good years by any means. If you already have a problem, get yourself a good lawyer, not this one.

You will just be giving money away. She does not return phone calls. Barely remembers your name. Will tell you two days before court. That you have court and she doesn’t knows the address. Send her evidence and she won’t present it. Use your retainer to send bills about phone calls and motions. Will not give you copies. Act like she works for opposing counsel. Threaten to withdraw if you ask her to job. The give you other clients information when you request your client file. Loves to meet in library parking lots on Gallatin Rd. Smells like menthol and hair products.

I had a consultation with this guy, and he was quick to anger. He was rude, and would interrupt me mid sentence with lines like, "I think you have a misunderstanding of situation" I would attempt to explain and he would again cut me off. After I said something, he would then use like like, "So what you're telling me is. . ." and then he would insert argumentative statements that were not what I just said or a correct summary of my talking points. I would stay away from this guy, he seems verbally abusive to his clients, which might result in him putting blame on his clients when he failed them.

I met Cathryn Armistead after seeking counsel regarding matters concerning my mother, who could not represent herself. Ms. Armistead convinced me that I needed a conservatorship on my mother. She claimed that she would assist me with the conservatorship and any matter connected to it once it was obtained. Before hiring Ms. Armistead, her level of communication was high. After being hired and after she was paid, communication almost ceased entirely. Several months after the conservatorship was granted, I hired Ms. Armistead in an attempt to seek justice for my mother, who had been the victim of neglect in an area nursing home. Once again, Ms. Armistead communicated with me regularly until a retainer was signed for services. After not hearing from her, I reached out via email to ask about a timeline for starting proceedings; I did not receive a response to my email. I then reached out to her office about the matter and was told by her paralegal that she did not know and would speak to Ms. Armistead concerning my question. I never heard back from her office and Ms. Armistead. I reached out again, but still no response. After repeated attempts via email and phone to contact Ms. Armistead, I reported her to the Board of Professional Responsibility of the Supreme Court of Tennessee. After receiving a copy of the complaint, it was only then that I heard from her by mail. I received a letter terminating our contract because "our relationship had deteriorated" This is not about a "relationship" but business. I understand that it is within an attorney's right to decide not to pursue a case. It is grossly unethical and bad business not to communicate with a client. I knew Ms. Armistead had her faults in communicating, but given the fact that it was a case of nursing home neglect of a loved one, I thought she would step up. It is inexcusable to keep a client waiting when time is wasted on helping an elderly patient (my mother) in a nursing home. Unfortunately, it appears that Ms. Armistead is only interested in obtaining new business without doing the work she is hired to do and doesn't like being held accountable, given that she terminated our "relationship" after being reported. It says a lot about a person when they are incapable of offering an apology for wasting your time and resources.

Friends and professionals questioned integrity of how the case was managed, -- rather mismanaged.

I had found Jonathan Wardle through an online search and spoke with his receptionist and then Jonathan about an urgent legal matter I needed help with. We came to the agreement that I would pay them to write a letter on my behalf about the issue with some back and forth with the other party, and if we couldnt come to an agreement with them he would take my case on contingency at 25-30%. He blew off writing my letter to the other party for two weeks until I had to remind him that I paid him to do a service. Once he finally wrote the letter, he told he my case wasnt worth his time, and that if I wanted to pursue the matter further, I would need to pay him up front to represent me in court, which completely goes against what was said me about taking the case on contingency if the letter didnt work. I asked for a refund for what I paid him, and he refused and told me not to contact him anymore. Do not do business with him.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
