Hank made something as sensitive and difficult as a divorce an easy and straight forward process. He listened to me, gave me honest and fair advice, and advocated for me throughout the whole process. Hank had my best interest at heart and this was evident from the beginning. I wholeheartedly trust Hank, and would recommend him to anyone in need of a lawyer. Hank constantly provided updates, and answered any questions I had happily. He was very easy to contact and hear back from promptly. Hank fights for his clients and handles your case efficiently. If I had to do my divorce process over again; the only thing I would change is reaching out to Hank sooner.

I would suggest looking elsewhere! There are plenty of other GOOD attorneys out there. This is not one of them. Hired his services, and did nothing but put me in a hole of 5 mo. Couldn't remember my file, then charges you to re-review and consult. Never requested the Discovery from opposing counsel in 5mo time. Never special set our hearing, since most if not all divorces take 5hrs to litigate. So left this as an assigned trial which could and would be a continued roller-coaster of delays even getting a judge scheduled for 5 hrs in Multnomah County. Never relayed any information that should have been given to opposing counsel, asked if I was seeking retribution for being upset based on the opposing counsel parenting plan (very limited access to kids for no reason) which any judge would deny (verified this with another attorney) and then up and quit the firm at Goldberg Jones. Asking if I want to retain and asked for an addition $10K retainer. Ha! If you want to be dug into a hole than what is already a bad situation, then Hank is for you.

Hank without a doubt search the bar when it comes to being an advocate for fathers and men. My custody battle took two years due to the courts jerking us around. Hank never quit and fought tirelessly to and sure I got what I wanted. After a year and a half my ex finally signed over what I wanted, butwhen the courts decided to sit on the paperwork for almost a year they came back saying signatures were too old and we had to go to court. Then my ex refused to sign the papers. He never stopped fighting and standing up for me with the courts along with my ex. Every step of the way he had open communication with me, kept me in the loop every second, and when my head was spinning and stressing me out he always calmed me down and made sure I was thinking straight. Hank doesn’t treat you like a client, you’re not just a number to him, he treats you like a friend. He looks out for you to make sure you are protected and make sure you are doing good. If you’re looking for an attorney who is a bulldog, someone that will be extremely aggressive and get what you want, Hank is by far the one you want.

100 percent. That's how much every person in the building gave. They made me feel like I was the only client. From the receptionist, to Casey himself, I felt that they truly cared and could tell that I was not just a client but that I actually mattered. The saying goes that you get for what you pay for, and not only did I get the best legal representation, I got so much more; people who actually care. Not only would I recommend them to anyone i cared about, if I ever need future assistance in a matter I know I can count on Casey and the entire Baxter law team to help.

I can't say enough about how well I was represented by Van McIver on a restraining order case in June. This was restraining order was filed with the court by my wife with many false claims and my parental rights were violated and in jeopardy. It was mandatory that I sought representation that would help me win back my right to be a father to my beautiful 1 year old daughter. This was the most traumatizing experience of my life, and Van really helped to keep me calm and hopeful for the truth to prevail in our favor. Van was so professional, and his experience really showed in the courtroom. He was able to fight our case aggressively, and even was able to get my wife to admit to her secret boyfriend while on the stand. As heartbreaking as this whole experience has been for myself and my innocent young daughter, the silver lining is that WE WON IN COURT AND THE CASE WAS DISMISSED! I will forever be in debt to Van and Baxter Law for their help, and in fact I will be using them for representation in my upcoming divorce case. THANK YOU AGAIN VAN MCIVER AND BAXTER LAW!

I just had a paid consultation with Cathy. She was so kind, and honest!! I truly appreciate her guidance in the matter of my divorce (as well as on child support/custody issues). LaMont Law's fees are pretty standard for divorce (both retainer and hourly fees), but what you CAN'T buy is that honesty and kindness of someone who truly wants to help. That, to me, is priceless. I'm so glad I spoke with her today!! I feel a lot more prepared and knowledgeable about my situation(s). If you've been searching around tirelessly for the right lawyer, like I had, I would highly suggest you give these guys a call! I do not think you'll be sorry.

So, I never really hired anyone here, but I did have a consult with Kurt back in 2019 for a custody filing. He was extremely helpful and very compassionate, but he was confident I could move forward without a lawyer representing my case, based on my own 'evidence'. I was a single mom of two, no financial support, and I 100% was so thankful that Kurt was an honest lawyer who wasn't just going to take my money. I believe he has retired but I still recommend Bendixsen Law to anyone who asks for a lawyer!

They have hearings without serving papers. They don't follow the law. They're sneaky and snakey. Update: my paralegal told me about how this law firm ran and I posted it on here. Now Brad Miller is questioning my mental health because I posted what my paralegal Nicole told me about how this firm runs. Because I posted an honest review Brad Miller is trying to retaliate in my current custody battle. Brad Miller emailed me May 2 2023 in the evening and had an immediate danger hearing May 3 without serving me papers. He has griped that I emailed him when he has emailed me personally. If you really want to stick it to your ex and you want that feeling that you beat them, this is the firm for you. This firm is effective! They will bend the truth for you in court and in numerous superfluous memos. They will bully your ex and drag out the process to ensure that your ex suffers. In fact, they copied me on an internal communication which showed that they will even lie to each other within their own firm. Now, when you come out of the divorce, they will have taken everything from you financially, but who cares when you succeeded in making your ex suffer and that their tactics make thing so toxic that you will hardly be able to co-parent with your ex in the future. To ensure this process drags out as long as possible, they will neglect to let you know that your ex has made offers to settle. For over two years, SKH will make no offers settle with your ex and they will encourage you to not accept any offers because why do that when they can make more money taking this to court. They have so many cases going to court that the judge rebuked SKH for delaying court for 4 months because they had so many court cases booked, but the judge can’t actually do anything to stop these grey area tactics, so it gives you more time to bully your ex! This firm will back you up and encourage you to take your ex for everything. And while this won’t let you move on with your life, who cares as long as you get to falsely believe that your ex is suffering more because of it. Thanks SKH! I don’t have anything left to pay you with anymore, but at least I can feel like my ex suffered.

I'm really not sure how there are even any negative reviews on here about Tom at all. There is not one thing in either of those reviews that even slightly resembles my experiences with Tom. I initially hired Tom several years back to gain access to my daughter. Since my daughter's birth, her mother refused to let me see her. I was young and naive and paralyzed by the legal system. I have no idea how to navigate the courts and gain access to my daughter. I tried to file a motion on my own and could not even get the paperwork filled out correctly to get my motion into court and of course the court clerks cannot offer legal advice or make suggestions. I didn't make good money and I had spoke with a few attorneys to get an idea of cost. I was quoted 15,000-25,000. One attorney wanted a $7,500 retainer and the other wanted $10,000. I was crushed. I was referred to Tom by a friend and I had a consultation with him. He told me how he could help me and outlined a plan of action. He was very confident that he would gain me access to my daughter. The cost he estimated was much less than the other attorney's and quite frankly he seemed much more knowledgeable and competent than the other two attorneys I had met with. The retainer is what really made this possible for me. Tom's retainer was very reasonable and allowed me to afford his services even with my lower income job. He went right into action and we filed for Custody/Visitation. I had questions all along the way and he gave me detailed and informed answers. As nerve racking as going court can be I was actually very confident with the whole ordeal with Tom as my council. I was aware a healthy amount of parenting time and have a fantastic relationship with my daughter today. It was a rough go at first but it was the best decision I have ever made. I only wish I met Tom earlier. Last year I called on Tom again for legal help. I was getting divorced and hired Tom to represent me. The whole thing was resolved in less than a month. I got to keep my house... if you know what I'm saying. I'm really thankful to have met Tom. I've heaped enough praise on Tom. I also wanted to comment on his staff. His assistant Alex actually was very helpful during this whole process as well. I spoke with him on a few occasions when Tom was not available and Alex knew all the details about my case and had answers to many of my questions. I don't leave too many reviews on the internet. Mostly because my time is important to me and I can think of 100 things I'd rather be doing, like riding dirt bikes with my daughter or going taking her fishing. Well, I wouldn't be able to do those things without Tom's help so I wanted to take the time to share my experience. I happily recommend Tom Brasier to friends and family, and anyone taking the time to read this. Cheers.

Recently, my old settlement had to be reopened and I hired a lawyer. What I learned from this new attorney is that I had learned very little from my first round with Mr Brasier years ago. When working with him he would get impatient when I had questions. He even left me a frustrated and unprofessional message about not having reloaded my retainer yet when I actually had (he just hadn’t communicated with his secretary). Years later, I’m finding out that my settlement is poorly written, a result of both attorneys involved, with ambiguities in the language that are creating problems for me and costing me more money. I’m learning from my current attorney about rights I’ve had all along regarding custody, tax credits, and child support that Tom never informed me of. My current attorney cares about informing me of my rights and giving me the information I need to make good choices. When I recently called Mr Brasier to ask a question about my settlement, he joked that he never remembers his clients. While this may be true, it certainly doesn’t seem like something worth saying out loud.

Tom picked up a pretty complicated case that didnt have a clear-cut winner. He was overly patient and understanding. When he had a suggested course of action, he laid everything out and even gives you his very best guess of each outcome, with context. Tom explained each and every part of the process... and he did it without ever being disingenuous with billing. His assistant Alex is warm and inviting as well as efficient. Alex was always communicative when Tom wasnt able or necessary. Tom was so good, cordial and timely that even the opposition preferred to communicate with him instead of their own counsel, and fired them. Tom won my case the very best it could and it was because of the legal maneuvers he suggested. It delayed the outcome, it costed almost twice as much as expected... and Tom explained each and every reason why things resulted as such. We won, I got exponentially more time with my daughter. Tom is a man of his word and if you dont hire him right now, theres a chance youll see him at the other side's table... and I promise you, that is not an opponent you want to have.

My situation was very stressful as i needed to recover this in order to pay for the coinsurance for a surgery my son will need to get in january. Mr. King was extremely compassionate to my situation. He helped me recover the money and more importantly, my ex previously threatened to embarrass me if i should pursue the judgement and threats of future lawsuits headed by King Family Law have kept him minding his own business and now we can both truly move on. King Family Law has my highest recommendation. Retain them!

Erin is wonderful. I went through a very lengthy, messy, and litigious divorce and hired multiple lawyers. I wish I had Erin representing me the entire time. I would have likely not had to go through many of the additional and unnecessary court cases as she would have gotten the divorce agreement right from the beginning. When going through this process it is important to have someone who will guide you appropriately and actually care about the outcome for you- not just the amount they are able to charge you for erroneous court cases. Erin will walk you through your options and guide you through the process. While we did try to avoid court, it was impossible with the other involved party. Erin is thorough and tough and gets the job done. In my case our outcome couldn't have been better and I truly believe it is because I had Erin and her team representing me.

Kaori is a great lawyer and worked really hard on my behalf when I was getting a divorce. I had met 3-4 other lawyers before her and felt like she was the only one that really cared and listened intently when we met. Throughout our time together, she knew how to best communicate with me when I was feeling frazzled and was very patient when I need explanation. I felt like we were a team -- I knew my history/situation and she knew the law. As a result, we worked well together to make a strong settlement case. As things got more intense, and I often got overwhelmed, I was really happy to have her in my corner. She is calm, focused, smart, very capable and kind. This woman is a gift to any family she represents. I trusted her with everything I was fighting for (my family) and she not only delivered, she was honest, she was sympathetic and she provided absolute guidance in a world of chaos and pain! She was worth every penny and then some. She is a strong advocate with a heart and also, importantly, not afraid to tell you the hard truths. She never treated me like my feelings did not matter, even though they may not have mattered to my case. I cannot say enough good about her. We had a three year long high conflict case that involved a transfer from another state and a lengthy parenting evaluation. Laurel Hook was my family's savior. There is not another way to put it. She was just that solid, reliable and trustworthy. She is exceptional, she is a valuable asset for your family and she will go to bat for you to defend you and your children. There is no one I would rather have spent years with on my custody battle, in an effort to protect my child. She gave me my life back and that means more to me than anything.

I first consulted Shannon Hall after my husband decided to separate from me when I was 74 years old. She thoroughly explained what a separation agreement would entail, and under what circumstances it would be worth pursuing one. I was impressed that she did not push me to do so unless I felt it might be necessary. When he decided to divorce me a year later, she guided me through the whole process, with kindness and understanding. She knew how to obtain information about his financial activities, and how to protect my future livelihood. Without her experience and acumen, I could have been a victim of my own naivete. I am very grateful to her.

trustworthy responsive dedicated reputable informed efficient diligent brilliant ethical sharp Kevin Gage is all of these, and more. I cannot imagine a better divorce attorney. Little could I appreciate, when my journey first began, the intricate complexities of family law. Kevin's handling of my case was masterful. I always felt like my case was the most important one on Kevin's desk. Kevin is highly conscientious -- all conversations were conducted swiftly and responsibly with a keen regard to my needs and my time. Whenever opportunities for lessening costs were available, Kevin made sure I was presented with these options. I truly believe that had I selected a different attorney, I would not have received the robust spousal and child support Kevin secured for me. The death of a marriage brings many regrets -- don't let the attorney you select be one of them. Go with Gage, you will not be disappointed.

I appreciated Sam J. Kuzma’s highly skilled abilities in navigating Oregon Family Law, in patiently listening to my complex case details, in showing compassion with professionalism, and in prioritizing the imperatives to develop a powerful, truthful, trial action plan! (He will cross multiple county lines, and learn the nuance differences of the law in your county, to successfully have your back in mediation and trial. Ask Sam as many questions as you need to spur consistent, productive, and clear communication. He will respond to what is most important for defending you and your best interest.)

Sam Kuzma did a masterful job navigating the minefield that was my divorce. Since I was the Petitioner, he wrote the Stipulated Judgment. He did a fantastic job of preparing me for what was to happen down the road. I certainly wasn't the best client, but he persevered and did not stint on effort. I highly recommend Sam, especially if you are the Petitioner in a High Conflict Divorce case. 100% recommended

Sam is a rockstar and went above and beyond for our family when faced with an unexpected divorce and custody dispute. He helped streamline the process and simplified things, he helped me understand what my rights were and what I could and couldn’t expect out of the process and really supported our kids’ best interest. As a father and husband himself, I appreciated his unique professional and personal perspective because it’s easy to get tunnel vision when we are in crisis. He is honest, responsive, reliable, trustworthy, knowledgeable and genuine. This is the attorney you want by your side, 110%.

I would recommend them to anyone seeking help with any and all legal issues. If they don't specialize in your area of need, they have an extensive group of legal experts who do. Give them a call. Grant has done a great job handling my divorce over the now two years that it has been going. He is intelligent and direct. He also knows the Hillsboro legal community, which is a great plus. I give Grant my highest recommendation. The rest of this review is just general advice on divorce with some comments as they relate to Grant...the stuff I wish someone had told me. 1) Things will go bad in the divorce. I don't care what you are saying to yourself right now. They will go bad. I promise. Get a lawyer right now if you can afford it. 2) Remember that lawyers get paid by the hour. Don't waste time telling them how much of a jerk your spouse is. They know. Just treat it like a business contract that went bad. The more emotional you are the worse the mistakes you are going to make. All that stuff is better done in mediation. 3) Get self counseling. I know that you believe that your spouse is the one with the problem. You are likely correct. But there are still insights that you can gain. Do you know why you picked the person you did? Do you know what you don't want in the future? Do you know what's best in terms of parenting time and your behavior around your ex? Maybe you do, but this is another thing I can only promise will help you. 4) Don't argue with your lawyer. You are probably wrong and they are probably right. This doesn't mean that you shouldn't question things you don't understand and also "trust but verify". Still, you are not, whether you know it or not, in the best mental condition. Grant, as well as any good lawyer has a much better perspective on the case than you do. Help them. 5) If you have assets over, let's say 50K, buy yourself an accountant. Believe me. They are very cheap compared to the expense every time the lawyer on the other side is confused. Grant is pretty good at accounting. However, don't assume that lawyers know anything about finances. The accountant can also talk in terms that your lawyer understands and can clarify much better than you can. They can also testify, if need be, to explain things to the judge. 6) Your lawyer is on your side. If he says something you don't like, well maybe its something you need to hear. Talk with him and treat him as if you are a team working for a common cause. 7) Always be the "good guy". Treat everyone with respect, be honest with the other side including admitting when you make a mistake. The process understands that no one is perfect. If you show you are trying your best to be fair and civil you will really do much better. 8) Oh, one last thing: Don't worry about how much a lawyer charges per hour. Why not? Well frankly you will rack up thousands of dollars in legal costs except for the most trivial of divorce. So, let's say you have a great lawyer that charges $250/hour and the crappiest one who was at the bottom of his class charges you $150. Yes, that's a big difference, but you get what you pay for. Seriously, not all lawyers are good...some are down-right crappy. So don't pick one only based on price. 9) Whoops, one final thing: Pay your lawyer NO MATTER WHAT. Money will be tight, but the last thing you want is for your lawyer to be worried if he is going to get paid or not. Imagine wondering if you will get paid at your job every week...a real demotivator! Work out what you need to do..talk to them if you can't pay, but always pay. Good luck. It is a long road, but it does get better and there is an end.

I have had 3 different needs for an attorney, and Grant was able to help me with all three. I was able to meet with him in the Beaverton satellite office, which was much more convenient for me. I was also able to get an appointment in a timely manner. He is easy to talk to and non-judgmental. I would definitely use his services again should the need arise, and would recommend him to others.

When my brother passed away unexpectedly last August, I had no idea what to do next. I live 2800 miles from him and I had no idea what the laws in Oregon were. I contacted an attorney that was extremely busy and could not help me, but they recommended Kirk Strohman. I feel like that was truly the luckiest recommendation for me. Kirk was the best attorney for my situation for sure. He and his staff guided me through a very difficult situation with kindness, patients and empathy. I would highly recommend Kirk Strohman and his associates for anyone that needs help with settling an estate.

My mental health is fine Brad Miller. Had a psych evaluation done.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
