I was referred to Dan by another trusted attorney and thank goodness because I think it would be difficult to find the best just by going "to the phone book" aka online. I've worked with Dan and his firm on a couple of family law occasions and he was highly responsive, professional, and overall very reasonable for the value provided. He didn't every abuse time or make you feel "on the clock" but rather worked efficiently to solve the issues at hand, and worked in a very good timeline for the results that I had hoped to accomplish. Highly recommend him and his firm for family law.

Any custody case can be difficult, but with a narcissist you will be in for one of the most painful, stressful and expensive rides of your life. I knew I needed the best. I chose Dan - after meeting with several attorneys - because he actively listened to my needs and wants and responded intelligently. He also didn’t just tell me what I wanted to hear. His view was informed and balanced. I knew, no matter how willing I was to compromise, I was in for a battle. I needed an attorney who would take the high road but would also be aggressive when need be. Dan is honest, seasoned and smart. I am extremely happy with my decision to work with him and with the job he has done representing me. Dan zeroed in on the immediate significant issues for me and my small child, as well as the future I wanted to build for us. After many years of squabbling with a narcissist and getting lost in crazy-making circles of disagreement with no resolution, I needed a plan in writing that we both agreed to. I got that and I was pleased with it. It took a lot of negotiation (because the other side created barriers) but in the end it was well worth it. Dan also did an excellent job of distinguishing the limits of the law. Many times he encouraged compromise where appropriate and he repeatedly encouraged me to only pursue what a judge would uphold. Throughout my case he was an advocate and helped me avoid court for some time. However, in the end, because of the other side, it was unavoidable. Dan was incredibly well prepared for the trial, and he did a phenomenal job. He argued fairly and intelligently; he is a quick thinker and he didn’t miss a beat. We were successful on every single issue. This outcome makes an enormous impact on my child’s life. I would definitely want to work with him in the future and I have already recommended him to friends and colleagues. Dan has decades of experience. He is also empathetic and has fair billing practices. Top-notch professional and decent human.

I'm not writing this review after realizing how grateful and fortunate I am now that my legal crisis has finally ended. I am writing to give the sincerest appreciation I can for the tireless efforts given by Dan Margolin and his entire staff for defending me against the most hostile, untrue, dishonest, calculating and devious attacks that anyone should ever have to be exposed to in one lifetime, and I am not exaggerating. I have never met anyone with such legal acuity and intensity when called upon than from Dan Margolin. I was frequently surprised and honored as I witnessed his tangible defensive responses against opposing council at each turn. I've also witnessed many times when the judge and opposing council thanked Dan for his legal enlightenment which assured me that Dan is no common attorney. I strongly recommend that IF you want the very best, you want your hard-earned money well spent, and by luck Dan Margolin is available? Then look no further and consider yourself very well protected as I have.

Alex is professional, knowledgable and personal. Considering that divorced family dynamics can be a bit challenging at times, Alex was able to keep things in perspective in a constantly changing family dynamic and she often noticed things that I did not see being so wrapped up in the difficulty; because of this, she was able to help guide the process along with efficiency, capability, knowledge and understanding. I like that she is serious when required and necessary, but also has a dry sense of humor that comes out when appropriate. She is always approachable and helpful. I would highly recommend her.

I had an excellent experience with Alexandra Nowlin. I chose her after interviewing two other lawyers. She was very calm, kind, and very analytical. She was also realistic about the details of my divorce case. As we worked together I always found her and her staff to be very quick and thorough in all communications. She did a great job at guiding me to plan and prepare for my case. She was very attentive and thorough throughout the entire process. I felt extremely well prepared for my divorce mediation. She was also very emotionally supportive and truly knew me as a client when we entered mediation. I highly recommend her.

Marshal helped me with a very complicated divorce involving multiple homes, a very large business, and my two small children. He was kind, compassionate, tough and ruthless when necessary. Marshal is extremely smart and I would recommend him for the most complicated divorce situation to the simplest divorce situation. He can do it all. He is still a friend today and one of the best lawyers I know. Looking back on how complicated my situation was I really appreciate him even more.

I engaged Marshal Spector as my attorney to represent my interests in post-divorce conflicts regarding child support and custodial issues. He was in every way responsive to my concerns: a thoughtful listener, a wise advisor, and a trusted counsel during difficult times. I especially appreciated his focus on mediating, as opposed to litigating, ongoing contentions, and believe his method of gently yet authoritatively interacting with opposing counsel/client would be of significant benefit to anyone who finds s/he cannot adequately speak for him or herself. Beyond that, Marshal is a generous man who treats his clients with the respect and graciousness that is often absent in the world of divorce. I cannot possibly recommend him more highly, and I will be forever grateful for his service to me.

Marissa Roldan took over my case mid-way and that was pending to be litigated in court in a very contentious lawsuit. Her professionalism and competence enabled an acceptable conclusion. I not only thank her, but I am also pleased to recommend her as a competent attorney.

Marissa helped me with the last (I hope) of a series of many family / parenting plan matters that Easley Law represented me on throughout the years. Marissa quickly got up to speed on my case, the scope of the matter at hand, and the nuances and challenges with the opposing party. Marissa provided solutions and counsel with creativity and realistic approaches with great competence. She managed opposing counsel with respect and collegiality, yet very adeptly and assertively on my case's behalf. I also appreciate that Marissa was humble enough to research matters to ensure she had the latest and best information. My case included some uniqueness that required some extra research, and her assessment and subsequent strategy was right on, leaving opposing counsel's client without loopholes that were not in our child's best interest. Marissa's was assertive yet tactful, and I feel that she effectively led the process along without excessive costs or time, despite backups and delays on the opposing side and large court backlogs. When needed, Marissa could handily, kindly, and respectfully explain things that became frustrating or not realistic to me, and kept the case moving as effectively as possible. In other words, she quickly and effectively brought me "back down to earth" when things became intense, as it sometimes does in this process. I know I got the best outcome without excessive billing. Most importantly, the interests of my child prevailed to the greatest extent possible, thanks to her superior work and support. We are forever grateful to Marissa, and also to everyone at Easley Law.

I highly recommend Cassandra Snelling as an attorney. Her specialty is family law and she was excellent in her representation of me throughout my divorce process. Not only was she a great attorney, advocating for my needs and educating me on my rights, she was kind and compassionate. One of the things I most appreciated about Cassandra was her excellent communication, her quick response time, and her ability to explain the process and answer questions in a manner that was understandable to me as a lay person, but without condescension. I was represented twice by Mrs Pritchard and both times she has fought like a Tiger on my behalf shreding the oponent party to peaces before a court of law. Her tacktics are amazing. I was in the Washington county jail when I met her in early 2006. She is an attorney that is not financially incline in order to defed because she takes cases like if they were her own personal issues and not her clients. To me, it felt that she protected me from anyone or anything coming my way from any direcction at any given time. When she stood next to me before the Judge in open court, her presence was my strenght and it felt like if I was shield with an armor against the enemy. I really, really admire Mrs. Pritchard for her experience and her agressiveness. She also is someone that no matter what you tell her about your case. Good or bad, she just will not change her manners, nor erase her soft smile and those gorgeous eyes she has will continue to see directly onto yours while at the same time listens to you as if a mother was listening to her child. I am in the process of hiring her again. I think of her from time to time because she will always have a place in my heart for her. I have and will always recomend her as long as I live. If she ever looses one of my cases is still will not change the way I feel about her and the respect I owe her. I know she is a Tiger. My legal Tiger.

Cordelia, aka "cordy", is a very smart, very skilled attorney. She is a fighter at the right times, and smart/calculating at other times. She knows when to go which route to get results. She is very down to earth, and not afraid to tell you or anyone else how it is - Which is A GOOD THING. Would you want an attorney who beats around the bush and is "ho hum" about things? I know I did not, nor do want. I feel very lucky to have been assigned her as my attorney. If you are having a difficult go of things no matter what you do, and really need a skilled attorney for complex issues - she is the person to have on your side. I cannot say enough good things about her. Her support staff is also outstanding. Top of the line in my opinion. They got back to me on the rare occasion they did not answer their phones even know they are very busy. I could also get ahold of Cordelia just about any time I needed her, and if not, she too would get back to me that same day; even if she was running out the door. She always listened to me, never talked down to me for my ideas, and really tried to make my voice heard. She could go anywhere and make the BIG DOLLARS, but she is working at Multnomah Defenders - that should speak alot about her, too. She obviously cares alot about families and helping them navigate this so-so system we have. A++++++++++++++++++

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.
