I hired Caleb as my back up for amicable mediation. When this plan failed, Caleb stepped in as my full time lawyer. In the 2 year 9 month long divorce process, I was unbelievable impressed with Caleb (and Susan, his para-legal!). There was no detail overlooked. He was totally dedicated to representing my needs and more importantly, what was best for my three kids. He is a fierce negotiator which resulted in avoiding court and ended up with a fair and reasonable settlement. I HIGHLY recommend Caleb.

Caleb was my attorney in my divorce and custody case. He is very skillful, knowledgeable and compassionate. Caleb kept me informed about the progress of the case, updated me with news from opposing counsel, and always explained everything I did not understand at first. Caleb fought for me and my son and got more than I imagined going into this. He represented me in trial and built a solid case to present to the judge. Caleb always went above and beyond in all areas with my best interest in mind. He remembers every word I said to him, every detail and date. He honestly cares about his clients and thoroughly loves his profession. He is a great lawyer and he exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend him!

After meeting with Denise only one time, I was confident in her. Her team at Teller & Associates are not only intelligent, well-read, knowledgeable of laws and the nuances of said laws, but they also care deeply about their cause. Denise was our lawyer, but she was also human, relatable-- a sure, realistic and calming presence in a difficult time. She is fantastic at her job, competent, methodical in her work and understanding the situation, and a sure, firm representative in interactions with the opposing counsel. I can't thank you enough, Denise!

Working with Denise has made a terribly hard situation easy, or as easy as it could have been. I am so impressed with her knowledge of the law and her ability to work under the most stressful of situations. Working with many different people on both the defense and opposing sides to our parties did not phase Denise and her countenance showed just how respectful she is. Not only is her knowledge of the law unparalleled, her ability to see me and others as people and not just another paycheck, was truly heartwarming and made me feel safe in her hands during an otherwise very difficult part of my life. I hope to never be in as bad of a situation as I had been when I initially called Denise, but if ever I am I know I will be calling her the first chance I get because she has my loyalty and trust forever due to the hard work and personal involvement she showed me. Being as this was my first experience in any sort of legal matter, it was only "easy" because of Denise's knowledgeable background in the law and her personal passion to uphold what is right. If you have a difficult case and need someone who is on your side in both the law and who can also demonstrate sincere understanding, call Denise. It will be the only call you need to make.

Mr. Campbell is an exceptional lawyer...He was very professional in dealing with my divorce proceedings and wrote up court documents in a timely manner to be filed. He acompanied me to all court appearances and also went on my behalf when I was not able to attend. Mr. Campbell helped me through a difficult process which I thought I would never be able to resolve. Now I can live the life I was always wanting all because of him. We definitely recommend Mr. Daryl Campbell. He assisted us by helping us comprehend a financial document that we had signed. He was prompt in contacting us at the agreed upon time and counseled with us for almost forty-five minutes interpreting the language of the document, making sure that we understood our financial position, the legal implications, and informed us of our options and limitations concerning the signed agreement. He was succinct when answering our questions, patient, and certainly knowledgeable. We ended the conversation feeling satisfied with the information given us, and better equipped as to what negotiations we may have going forward concerning said document. We will definitely use Mr. Campbell if we need assistance with any future legal matters.

Pat and her incredible team stepped up to help when our family lost an Adequate Cause determination due to an insufficient review of the evidence we presented showing extensive medical and educational neglect of my fiance’s kids by their mom. We had been turned down by multiple well known appeals attorneys in the area. Apparently NO ONE wins appeals for adequate cause in family court — ESPECIALLY DADS — so no one wanted to take us on. We were running out of time, when at the last minute we were referred to Pat. I think because of her strong civil rights bent, and her work with LGBTQ clients, she had an open mind when it came to our dilemma. We had strong evidence that had been ignored. We had a suicidal, special needs kid going without treatment or support. I think her sense of fairness is what made her scratch the surface where others shied away. The mom worked at the courthouse where the case was heard and all of the commissioners and judges knew her. Several recused. But even the ones who didn’t saw her as a colleague and we never stood a chance for a fair hearing - though there was no way we were ever going to be able to prove bias. Instead, Pat approached the appeal as a thorough, logical, evidentiary walk-through which systematically picked apart the lies, inconsistencies and unsubstantiated claims made by the mom. This deconstructed her narrative and showed it for the smokescreen it was. By the time she had laid out 2+2, it was obvious the case equaled 4, and that the Skagit County court had missed it completely. It was amazing to watch her talk to the appellate panel. It was obvious they viewed her as a peer and someone who would bring very valuable arguments to be considered. Until we saw those interactions I don’t think we were really aware of WHO she was in the legal community and the tremendous respect and standing she had. But we got it at that moment and now recognize the last second miracle we were given when she took our case. 10 months after we filed the appeal, the opinion came back that the Skagit judge had abused his discretion and our case was remanded for trial. They even published the opinion. We went on to win primary custody, sole medical and educational decision making (with a minor area of exception for one child) and have been able to start getting them the help and support they needed. Pat went up against the SYSTEM that is stacked to the rafters against fathers and prevailed. She saved our kids from a lifetime of neglect and an abusive level of alienation that had been going on for many years. She saved our family. It’s that simple. We are forever grateful.

THANK YOU TATIANA! Tatiana is a fantastic attorney! She does so much for such a good price! She was very knowledgeable, and when she didn't know something, she got help from her parter, Janet Watson, who also went to trial for me because they thought Ms. Watson was a better fit. She gave me excellent advice, she was always very quick to respond and to file necessary papers. Extremely professional, and always following legal proceedings to a T. She never wasted my money, always keeping correspondence as short as possible, while still answering all my questions (and I had a lot!). I am so happy I found her and Janet. PS- she's beautiful too!

Mr. Musafia accepted my case after I found myself with no lawyer in the middle of the divorce, dealing with DV history and custody battle. Nobody wanted to take my case. Finally, Wechsler Becker, LLP was recommended to me by another law firm. Mr. Musafia was honest with me from the beginning. He clearly explained to me how difficult my case was and how hard it will be to correct the mistakes and achieve desirable results. He fought fiercely for me and my son. He was transparent and honest every step of the way, always explaining options and outcomes. His experience and the support of the rest of his firm helped to achieve the best result. If you are looking for an honest, knowledgeable, experienced and reliable lawyer, who will be with you every step of the way, then Mr. Musafia is the right choice.

I have had the privileged of having Glyn as an attorney in my child custody case for over 4 years. Glyn is trustworthy, honest and professional. Truly one of a kind. I also would like to comment on his assistant: Crystal Wang. I am so grateful to have them to settle my case, answer my questions and always provide me professional advice. Glyn was a wonderful representative of Calm preparedness during what became an emotional and tenacious child custody litigation. He helped me to stay focus on the larger picture, and he worked on my case in a caring and timely manner.

She gets right back to me (when she's not in court) and works an unbelieveable number of hours. She's worth every penny! Don't compromise, just hire this attorney.

I really wish I knew what to say to describe my experience with Ross Amkraut. I can only convey the feelings that I experienced after each consult. Ross gave me strength throughout the beginning process of my divorce proceedings. Whenever I was feeling anxiety, it seemed as if he knew, and would call to inform me of updates in my case. I feel Ross was extremely attentive to whatever I needed. If I felt uncomfortable in a situation dealing with my spouse Ross would offer to handle it. Ross gave me strength throughout the eight months he worked on my divorce case. I would highly recommend Ross to anyone needing a lawyer. BBS

Earlier this year, I learned that I had to pay several years of back child support. I only had a small amount of money to offer for both, my future attorney and the mother of my child. Having been in legal trouble before, I have had several experiences with attorneys. The first attorney that I spoke with about this issue used a song-and-dance that I heard before,"I can do this...if...if... then if....maybe...". The one thing that the first atorney was certain of was his price. His price was twice as much as I would end up spending, well beyond what I could afford and the money that my family would end up lending me to settle this issue. The second attorney that I spoke with was also named "Marcus". He wanted about half as much as the first attorney, but only had a couple of years experience. However, he was willing to offer payments. Being a person with very limited resources, I thought I would call him back. When I called "Marcus" back, I heard a different voice. The voice was soft spoken and very articulate. I thought I had the wrong number. As I would soon learn... I did have the wrong number. I had actually dialed the number of Marcus Lang, a Seattle, Washington attorney that has been handling personal injury, wills and family cases for more than 20 years. After admitting my mistake, Marcus was kind enough to listen to the details regarding my current situation and past history (he offers a free 30 minute consultation). He not only said he could help, but made me feel confident that he could help. Very importantly, he offered to handle the case for $500 less than the previous attorney named "Marcus" that I had called. I know $500 may not be alot to many of you, but to me, it could be the difference between being homeless or not. After a couple months of negotiating, Marcus was able to get the amount that I had owed down to a fraction of the original amount. After pleading with family members and friends, I was able to get a couple of loans to satisfy the settlement. Throughout the entire time, Marcus responded promptly to my emails and was very professionally. When my finances were exhausted at the end, he worked for next to nothing. Unlike ANY of the other attorneys that I have had reperesent me, Marcus Lang has been the only one to care about doing his job professionally and my welfare. If you need an attorney, Marcus is the best! Thank you, Marcus.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
