I was injured in a car accident and my pain and suffering claims after the treatment weren’t taken seriously by the party at default. Then I hired Abe Law Firm and thanks to their professionalism and commitment, I was able to settle my claim for fair amount that I deserved. I was represented better than I could have ever imagined, they kept me informed throughout the progress and finally received what I deserved. I highly recommend Mr. Serawit Abebe

Mr. Eshetu assisted us with an immigration case. He has tremendous experience and knew exactly what needed to be done. It took a very long time to find a qualified immigration attorney who understood the complexity of our situation, someone whom we ould rely on and trust for representation. Even outside of office hours he took our calls, text messages, and emails. Sometimes stayed late to meet with us. An honest, hardworking, and devoted man. We were very grateful for his services and can not wait to work with him again. We highly recommend Mr. Eshetu.

You should consider David. A friend just now asked me about my divorce lawyer and whether I liked him. It’s indeed been years since I really thought about this exact relationship (divorce in 2017) so I was reminded to review him. I met David at a wedding of some friends in which he was serving as the groom’s best man. I thought it was great that I met him organically. I think I met with a few others but a reference from a friend is worth pure gold to me. I agree with everything all have said below. He always spent good time with me, he has a sense of humor and even though at the time, I could barely crack a smile, it frankly diffused a hell of a lot of tension. He had a clever strategy and though we never discussed it, I think I picked up on his waiting game with my ex-sociopathic con man louse of a husband. I am a get- it - done - NOW- -person as soon as I make up my mind. That’s not gonna serve you best with a sociopathic poor man who has no source of income of his own. David took the long view and looking back now I know it served me well. By the time we waited him out he was willing to take far less than originally “requested”. I was my usual impatient. But in the end, not only did he honor my request to finalize the divorce on a certain specific date (it was meaningful to me and sent a secret sayonara message to my EX), he saved me a lot of money with his tactics.

I have known David Huber almost 20 years, professionally and personally. He was the clear choice to represent my interests when I divorced in 2010. My then wife and I had been married over 30 years and had lived together for eight years prior to that. We had two adult children and a somewhat complicated estate of community and separate properties. I wanted a fair, equitable and friendly outcome. Unfortunately, my former wife engaged an attorney to represent her interests that was not interested in a fair, equitable or friendly outcome. David’s even and principled representation was able to neutralize the vitriol of opposing counsel while remaining a strong and persuasive advocate on behalf of that ‘fair and equitable’ outcome. David and I both understood that the problem was not primarily my wife … and after 18 months of discovery (of questionable good faith), David was able to persuade opposing counsel that no assets were being hidden. From that point we were able to proceed to a formal mediation process which resolved in one day. On both a professional and personal level, David was a superb lawyer and counselor. He was always prepared. He communicated well the different perspectives of each issue before making his recommendation … and then accepted whatever decision I ultimately made. He shielded me effectively against difficult opposing counsel. He advocated for and so allowed a fair and equitable outcome to occur. Friendly even. My highest recommendation.

In 2009, I went through a terrible divorce and my counselor at that time mentioned “the children are young enough you can leave now and they won’t remember you.” Had I met Nelson nd had him as my attorney from day one I am confident I would’ve been the sole custodian of the children. In 2009 related to the job market and economy I lost my employment had to short sell a house on top of a recently fresh divorce with children. In 2009 related to the job market and economy I lost my employment had to short sell a house on top of a recently fresh divorce with children, my x refused to pay her Proportionate share of household expenses and bills that she herself accrued on a joint credit card. The “hold harmless clause” was clearly violated. Nelson rectified this situation and had made sure that my ex could not get away with more financial damage. It is now 2019, my ex still thinks we are fighting a divorce, still refuses to properly cooperate with regards and respect to our now 11-year-old daughters. I trust Nelson, he’s easy to talk to and knows the letter of the law and most importantly he does not mince words. He will be my chosen attorney from here until he retires.

I retained Mr. Berry to assist with a simple Quit Claim deed my Ex had failed to complete. It suddenly turned into a more serious matter and I found myself having to defend my ownership rights and equity of the real property awarded to me by divirce decree. Mr. Berry immediately engaged with a level of professionalism and knowledge of the laws specific to my case that were key to why this ended in my favor. He was patient with me (and how!), he filed swift, consise pleadings and he was and is a force to be reckoned with. I am more than pleased and I highly recommend Mr. Berry's legal services.

Mr. Berry is a complete professional, in every sense of the word. Compassionate, honest, prudent and versatile in matters of law. I am a single mom and very able, competent and successful. I am the founder of my own non-profit, although small in scale, that serve the needy with a determined and compassionate mission statement. I had a terrible last year with personal crisis and being harassed by Cps investigators twice. The first round I was completely oblivious to what their demands and ridiculous requirements were doing to the fiber of my family. I had no attorney at that time because I thought for sure I could not afford one. The second round I was empowered and immediately reserved my 5th amendment rights to not speak to anyone until I consulted an attorney. I was able to find Mr. Berry on a fluke chance that he did not want a huge retainer for his services. His services were extremely reasonable. I recommend him for anyone feeling lost, desperate, hopeless, or oppressed. He really helped me more than he will ever truly know.

I called James for a consultation and to interview him for possibly doing a prenuptial agreement for me. I found him to be forthcoming with accurate information. At the end of our conversation, I requested a ballpark price. He completed the job on time and under the price he quoted. This is very rare in this day and I've hired many lawyers in the last 30 years. I would not hesitate to hire him again if I needed legal assistance in his field.

During 2011-2013 John helped me with the process to change my Visa Status. The school I was enrolled in committed several mistakes leading the change of visa from a J1 to an F1 that eventually the Visa was denied and the case was cancelled in two different occasions. John finally took care of the process and later on had to intervened with the school to avoid having me paying the fees that the USCIS required in order to re-open my case. After waiting for a long time I did get my Visa. John charged me a fee that took in consideration my financial situation.

There are lawyers who try win for you by cheating and lying. If they dont succeed then it will be the client who looks bad in the end. Marguerite Smith is one who will represent the best in you by doing things the right way and winning with ethics. I didn't exactly win, but had I not had Marguerite as my attorney then I might have lost greatly. Marguerite is the best lawyer you can get. We had a very difficult and complex case together, no one else could have won. She was always spot on, and her advice and strategy has been excellent. She is also well connected with her network of top colleagues she can draw from. I only can highly recommend her, don't go anywhere else if you want to win the best for your child. Her billing is clearly structured, reasonable and just. Apart from being an outstanding expert in family law she is also a wonderful, highly intelligent down to earth person, who will understand your needs and fight for your best interests. If you want to get the best out of your case, I would highly advise you, to work close WITH her- she is an excellent team worker, as better you you work with her and provide her with all she will ask you for as better she can work with you for you. At court in litigation she excels even higher, she has been always quicker and one step ahead of opposite council before they even realize what happened. While being fast thinking and moving, when it really matters, she is also very structured and good organised, which gives you an easy ride in difficult territory. This is what you need, when you emotionally blocked in these situations. She will steer you clear through a stormy sea. She is not only on the money, she is the best value you can find for your money. You will never regret choosing her, but really regret not have chosen Maggie, when and have her as your opposing council, than you are doomed! Well you had a choice - choosing Maggie Smith at the first place. Thank you for all you have done for me and my child, I will never forget.

Ms. Smith helped during a long and difficult international divorce involving child custody issues. Besides being very knowledgeable, she is also very organized and proactive. Throughout the whole process, she clearly explained the alternatives and their consequences. She sought and found advice on foreign law as needed, consistently kept me in the loop on what was going on and answered my numerous questions without delay. Her calm and friendly demeanor was reassuring in those circumstances when you're clearly not in control but merely trying to understand what the next step is. You can't turn divorce into something easy, but it sure helps knowing you have someone on top of things on your side...

My father retained Mrs. Johnston for a juvenile criminal matter. Mrs. Johnston was skillful and persuaded judge to try me (a first time offender) and co-defendant (who had a considerable amount of criminal history) separately. A class "A" charge, carrying a 2-5 year sentence was dismissed and I entered a plea on a remaining charge that was a class "C" offense. Over the years my family has been in contact with Mrs. Johnston who has made her wisdom and legal services available to us. She responds timely, asks questions for clarity, once having an understanding of all of the stakeholders and applicable statutes she gave us realistic feedback and informed advice. I highly recommend Mrs. Johnston.

I was faced with a nearly decade marriage ending with one of the toughest personalities I've ever encountered in my life as the adverse party. I chose Integrative Family Law and Paige because of the reputation for fighting for what is right, not for destroying the adverse party. My case even had a complex international adoption from a non-Hague country which was a contributor to the end of the marriage. Paige cut through all the nonsense expertly, as well as brought in the right parties to get to as amicable an agreement as we could and also gave reasonable advice as a casual "relationship counselor" to help me keep a cool head through this emotionally charged ordeal. I kind of want to make sure Paige meets my next serious girlfriend...

Paige fulfilled all these roles with superiority. I am grateful that she supported me and often told Paige that she should wear a hero's cape to work. I could blather on and on about Paiges' excellence. Fact is , I walked into Paige's office with nothing other than the fear I would never see my son again. Today I live with my son!

Laura is an incredible lawyer. We knew from the first moment we met her that she was smart, competent, and had an excellent grasp of family law. She gave us clear advice with such confidence and authority that we felt our initial consultation was the best money we could have possibly spent. We did not anticipate hiring her given our particular situation, but when we called her back and asked for help she did not hesitate -- AND she got a job done that literally seemed impossible to us. Jessica really knows the law, and the legal documents she writes are incredible. She is very smart, professional and it is at her core to help people. She helped me and my children immensely. I know we wouldn't be where we are if it wasn't because of her help, wisdom, hard work and big heart. I highly recommend her to anyone who is unfortunately dealing with DV!

I hired Jessica to help me with my family law modification. Jessica's compassion, kindness and professionalism really made a positive impact on me and my family law case. She really has a strong understanding of domestic violence and the family law system, and will help you to strategize the best outcome to protect yourself and your children. She is also unafraid to speak up if she thinks that you need to look at things from a different perspective, which can really benefit clients during what can be a very emotional period of time. For me, the honesty was welcome and very much appreciated. Jessica is one of the best attorneys I have met or worked with in a long time.

Kristina Selset was my representation, and I had the pleasure of working with her. She was very knowledgeable, professional, and calm. Our case outcome was very uncertain and could go either way, but she guided us smoothly and provide us lots of options to minimize the potential bad outcome. Due to her excellent representation, we are pleased that we did not get any bad outcome and are free of charge. I would like to recommend Kristina and the Marshall Defense Firm when it comes to life’s precious gems like your children or dealing with CPS. I can’t tell you how comfortable I felt during the whole process by knowing someone on my team that was knowledgeable and put my mind at ease. I really appreciate everything she has done for my family!

I was referred to Kristina Selset from Marshall Defense. She was a very bright light for me at a time of really high anxiety. Her calm and professional demeanor showed me she cared for her clients and it gave me emotional support when I truly needed it. My situation was a bit unusual so she stopped the consult about half way through to research the law and then gave me excellent factual advice. I'll be forever grateful and recommend Kristina's services without hesitation. Sincerely, thank you.

Leslie was my attorney for my divorce this past year. She did a fantastic job advising me--helping me to understand each step, making sure I knew the implications of every decision, and constantly advocating for my position. Although the other side's attorney was very difficult to work with, she maintained an incredible level of professionalism. Leslie was also very responsive throughout the process and a pleasure to work with. I certainly recommend her.

Maya is an excellent family lawyer and absolutely worth hiring. Here are the criteria that were important when I was looking for a lawyer to help with my divorce: 1) Overall personality: a lawyer must be trustworthy and also easy to work with (there is a lot of back and forth). I interviewed Maya along with several other lawyers and after working with her for a year (which was not what either of us had hoped to spend on the divorce), I can only say good things about the above. 2) Price: her hourly rate is in line with most family lawyers. While there are some work-discount programs and also private practice laywers that may have a lower hourly rate, being at a firm has the benefit that for smaller tasks, Maya had the support of a paralegal who bills at a much lower rate. 3) Efficiency: This is wrapped up in price because if someone bills at half the hourly rate, but takes twice as long to do something, the amount of money spent is the same, but...the task took twice as long. This is tough to gauge beforehand, but I will tell you that Maya works fast and her work product is excellent (intelligent and insightful comments on documents, deep knowledge of the system and the law). 4) Results: This, also, is tough to determine beforehand. Here is what I will say: Maya is excellent in court and when push comes to shove, she will throw down the gauntlet and advocate in a respectful, but firm way. She was able to send specific, motivating emails to opposing counsel that got results at critical points in time. Overall, Maya is an excellent choice she is reasonable and would tell me when what I was asking was not. Honestly, I have no points of criticism. You can do your due diligence in seeking a family lawyer, but if you want to simplify the process, hire her and never look back.

I highly recommend her and have already referred a friend to her. If you have to go through a divorce, you should have someone who treats you with respect and works hard for you.

Alexandra "Xana" helped me as a single father retain 50/50 custody of my two children. My ex-wife and mother of our two children decided that after 8 years of being divorced in another state that she would paint a completely untrue picture of me as an abusive, alcoholic and unfit father. Since the children's parenting plan was from another state, that added to the complexity of the case. My ex-wife hired an attorney from a "prestigious" Bellevue family law firm that has profiles of countless lawyers on their website. Her lawyer asked for three different emergency injunctions due to child safety. All three were rejected by multiple judges! The difference between Xana and the Bellevue law firms lawyer is that Xana uses facts, the laws and the truth. This case lasted nearly a year, and was the worst experience of my life. It was not cheap and emotionally exhausting to say the least. Xana was always there to answer my questions and give me guidance. The Bellevue law firm and my ex-wife decided to request a dismissal of the case because Xana was more prepared, more knowledgeable and ultimately a better lawyer. If you need a family law lawyer, Xana is the best there is in the Puget Sound!

I have worked with numerous attorneys and “Xana” is a 10 out 10. I had a very complicated case with the custody of a special needs adult daughter. It required knowledge of family law (involving stipulations from out of state), guardianship law, and special needs law. Finding someone knowledgeable in these separate pillars is very rare. I was very impressed in how “Xana” quickly got her arms around the key issues, and developed a comprehensive strategy to counter the opposing council’s motions. I was very impressed with her knowledge of the new and emerging laws (in these areas), and how we could take advantage of them. “Xana” is a very smart, creative, and compassionate person. It was a real pleasure to work with her and her staff. I would not have prevailed without her.

Alexandra ("Xana") represented me through my divorce, and was someone who I could rely on not just for legal advice, but also to keep the focus on the underlying issues, and help dial down the emotions when the other side would make aggressive moves that were simply not child-centric. At many points, it was a draining journey and she was a rock steady resource. She truly has an encylopedic knowledge of the law and one thing that helped to keep the many loose ends tied down was to have her assistant keep a punch list of the items that were in play. Certainly, you'll benefit from Xana representing you and providing the right context about the implications of a given situation.

Kathryn is recognized as one of the leading divorce attorneys in Washington. I know this because I did a lot of research before I hired her; I also know this because my neighbor is a judge recommended her above all others; I know this because I watched her work in court; and I know this because she was so highly recommended by her former clients. Kathryn truly cared about my case, but moreover, she truly cared about me. She went out of her way to schedule appointments that considered my schedule; she sympathized with me where it was appropriate to do so; she showed "tough love" when it was necessary and she fought for me like a veritable pitbull. My case was very complex, including custody issues and 7 figure financial issues. Kathryn presented the case like an accountant, social worker and legal scholar all wrapped into one. She is truly the best of the best and I cannot recommend her highly enough.

I hired Paul on a chance and a prayer in a desperate situation and a suggestion from an NPR attorney I contacted that was referenced in an article on cyber-stalking and domestic abuse. I have spoken to many attorneys and was looking for someone who would listen to my story, read my evidence and no matter what, be honest and submit truth to the justice system. My ex-husband and his attorney have submitted perjurous lies and base their litigation on chicanery, abusive use of the court system and backing an innocent person into a corner when they are unrepresented to cover up lies and criminal activity. No matter what has been cast against me or submitted to the courts as backhanded strategy I will not partake in unethical conduct. Paul has advised me based on experience, honesty and best case scenarios no matter how dim that picture may look or the little light in the corner. He is an ethical family man who makes you feel comfortable, does not judge, has a sympathetic heart and shares a wise story or joke. He’s the kind of guy you’d like to just sit and listen to, talk to or learn from. I highly recommend Paul and commend him on upholding the morals, values and laws he swore to preserve. Accolades to Paul for making me believe there are still good people out there!

At all times, she remained focused on the well being of my child and was highly committed to a residential plan that reflected her experience and deep understanding of what was most important for the psychological/emotional health of my child. Specifically, she guided through the process of reviewing and documenting issues and concerns that were highly relevant to the final residential plan. In addition, she was able to throughly and comprehensively review large sets of financial documents including forensic accounting and executed appropriate timely legal actions /briefs that ultimately led to a well considered property/financial settlement. She exercised sound and forward thinking with the understanding of legal precedents. What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
