This attorney avoids returning phone calls, text messages, replying to emails, and has a tendency to disappear when you need help. This attorney is quick to believe non-credible people and non-credible information about his client and jump on the bandwagon / false narrative without getting the other side of the story or prematurely before getting the proven facts. If you communicate to him how you feel things are going with his "services" and improvements you would like to see, he is quick to dismiss your concerns, act in a rude manner by calling you a name and/or make false assumptions about you based on no evidence. He doesn't like getting constructive criticism.

I was in an extremely messy divorce process with a spouse who was making false allegation. I went from having supervised visitation to joint physical and legal custody, defended me successfully in mediation, he got me a good deal in spite of the negative experience a divorce is. Mr. Cahill gave me lots of advice before the divorce filed which was a huge help for me as a client in the legal issues I faced in the process. Highly recommended.

Trent Cahill seemed like a nice professional guy when I first met him; however, during the process of him representing me, there were many times where I felt he was representing the opposing party. He tried pushing me to make decisions that would help the opposing party. He would sometimes send time sensitive emails later than I would expect something of time sensitive nature to be handled. I tried to communicate that I would prefer to receive emails sooner. But I continued to receive emails late. I would recommend Trent Cahill if you want to spend a lot of money for subpar performance and results. I would not recommend Trent Cahill if you want to be strongly represented.

I was referred to Jeremy Jones through an acquaintance a year into my family case. It was a smooth transition from my previous lawyer and Jeremy starting working on my case right away. Jeremy worked on my case for about 3 years. I always felt like he was taking care of things effectively and efficiently and making sure I had peace of mind through the whole thing. He always explained things well I wasn't clear on and he kept my best interests at heart. I was never shocked by a bill that came and was never rushed to pay. His firm even charges less an hour for these cases because they are hard on clients who find themselves in these situations. I would highly recommend Jeremy and his firm. They were honest and fair to work with and yes, we did happily settle our case.

Jeremy Jones was the worst decision I made during my divorce. Not only is Jeremy ineffective counsel, he created a procedural nightmare. Now I am paying back child support to a deadbeat dad, while my children were living with me! His ineptness cost me over $30,000, set me back years, I cannot undo what he has done. Had to hire a new attorney to finalize my divorce.

One star is too many, zero should be an option. The amount of damage Tamara did to my case is unforgivable. She made glaring errors, completely forgot to file orders, would ignore emails/calls/texts for months and months on end, and gave advice that has harmed the lives of many, including children. She made no efforts to take accountability for what she did or try and fix the damage done, withdrawing when the full scope of her mistakes became apparent. It will take years to attempt to undo what she did, and more money than I can imagine. Tamara should not be a licensed attorney. She has been reported to the office of professional misconduct with hundreds of pages of documented evidence. I will take all necessary steps to hold her accountable for her actions so she cannot do this to another unsuspecting client. Do not consider her in your search for an attorney if you are looking for competency and professionalism, or even just an attorney you’d like to be able to get a hold of within a month two. There are bad attorneys, then there are attorneys who will ruin your life. Tamara is the latter.

She helped me through some incredibly hard times this last year. I have PTSD and she did everything for me concerning my ex so I didn’t even have to speak directly to him. She helped my divorce go through and made me feel incredibly comfortable the entire time. She listens attentively and was always comforting and never judgmental. I can never thank her enough for all that she has done for me and my family.

Arrogant and incompetent. She never wanted to see or send the evidence of my case to court. She sold me a plan that would supposedly resolve my case in 3 months and simply did not comply. She leave the case without telling me and go on a trip and leaving a person that don't have any idea of case. The case was turned against me and as I did not agree they told me that if I was not agree, they would charge me money that I had already paid months ago and that she was not going to allow me to harm her prestige since she had to please the judge and the commissioner. I ended up firing her and looking for another lawyer. I don't recommend it at all. Nor did they return my full money for non-compliance of his work

Mr Mcconkie represented the other party in long and messy divorce case —which never should have been been long or messy. Several of his colleagues have confirmed that Mr Mcconkie’s work persona had shifted im recent years, and he often gets caught up “pleasing” clients (including incredibly unstable and abusive ones), rather than looking for smart ways to shorten the case & reduce the cost + trauma of family court. If you’re looking for a trusted attorney who is actively finding ways to mediate quickly, save time and costs, and not invoice you for years while he gladly feeds the drama, keep looking.

I hired Sallie Benedict of Alder & Robb, P.C. The service I received was very poor at best. I spent a substantial amount of money for time supposedly spent on my case which resulted in the court nearly dismissing the case twice because of inactivity. The only reason the case was not dismissed, and costing me even more money, was due to opposing counsel asking the court to keep the case open. Neither Sallie Benedict nor Alder & Robb, P.C notified the court that they were representing me; therefore the court assumed I was representing myself. I strongly suggest you look elsewhere if you need good legal representation!

I was charged criminally in Farmington. Ryan took the time to go through the evidence and even sent out requests for more evidence to see if the case could be argued from a different angle. I could tell that the prosecutors respected him and listened to what he had to say. Also, the Judge listened to Mr. Bushell and considered his arguments. I have been in court before and it seems that court is where Mr. Bushell excels. I would recommend him to family and friends. He was worth the money.

I worked with McKenzie for several months. She is nice and helpful, but i was disappointed in her grasp or recall of the details of my case. I should have recognized the signs. I corrected the details in the case many times, in fact each document sent to me for approval needed corrections. At my hearing, while the opposing counsel was dressed professionally, spoke confidently and knew all his facts, McKenzie did not meet those same standards of professionalism. In her presentation of my case she often looked up and to the right, a sign that she was trying to remember or trying to formulate what to say. She even stated some facts of the case incorrectly in front of the judge. Part of our request was allowed to go to trial (which my ex wanted completely dismissed) and part of the opposing party's request was granted. The outcome wasn't all bad, but I was disappointed in the way she represented me. I spent a lot of extra money correcting the documents over and over.

Trevor Fugate took over my divorce case after my previous lawyer, whom I'd only worked with for a couple weeks, left the practice for another firm. He caught up quickly with the particulars of my case, was great at responding to my emails, and explained everything going on clearly. He was also quite personable and easy to chat with for the five to six hours we were together in mediation. And last but not least, when my soon-to-be-ex-husband's lawyer kept (repeatedly) dropping the ball and stalling progress on the case, Trevor took it upon himself to do the other lawyer's job for him, pro bono, and push my divorce through the court. Great guy all around.

He refused to look at my case until months after key hearings. Was never prepared or had key documents showing I'd been cleared. Refused to call out witness intimidation or deceptions by others. Let them make up whatever they wanted until I made a video showing they were lying about everything. Even then he let them make up more without sticking up for me -- and I have over 40 pieces of evidence showing they were lying about everything. It was ridiculous. Mr Murphy even let them lie about their financials in court when I have evidence showing they left out a raise and thousands in bonuses. He can make deals, but not advocate for his clients or read the details of a case. I was not represented and when new orders were suggested, he allowed them without argument and didn't give me a copy of the new orders. He even told me orders had been removed when they hadn't. Very dangerous to have this man as your attorney.

In trying to find lawyer, I contacted Michael Murphy. He was flaky when we set up a consult and wasn't even around when it was time. Called back again, flaked out again! When he finally called back the next day he was incredibly rude like I was inconveniencing him! He didnt take the time to listen and complained that he wasn't getting paid for this. The consult lasted less than 5 minutes! I would hope his attorney skills are better than his client repertoire which turns out is terrible. I would go somewhere else if you want to actually be heard on your situation. He didnt even ask enough questions to have a grasp on what needs to be done.

My estranged wife hired Todd Sessions as her divorce lawyer and got a bad deal, which makes me feel bad for her. Granted my estranged wife is a drug addict; however, Sessions did very little to help her get alimony and maintain positive visitation with our children. At one point in court, Sessions committed a logical fallacy and appealed to a higher authority (dropped another judges name) in an attempt to make himself look good... wow! In the end he was more concerned about getting paid then helping his client :(

Mr. Sessions at first was eager to help, seemingly giving information and instructions for our custody case. After my husband and I did all of the work and put everything together on our own for our hearing, Mr. Sessions scanned it in (leaving out documentation he had that we didn't) and emailed it to the court...charging us $1000 in the process. We had a very strong case, however, he continued to convince us that having him there at his hourly rate would be beneficial. After the Commissioner gave her orders, Mr. Sessions DID NOT reference the court minutes before filing orders with ORS, leaving out a major portion of the orders for us to receive 7 months back of paid child support, as well as 50% of the medical expenses from that point on. Three months after filing incomplete orders to ORS, we have yet to receive a return phone call or email, or have the corrected orders given to ORS. It's a several thousand dollar mistake, and it still isn't corrected. We're having to get him formally removed from our record at the court as being our attorney so that the court will allow us to proceed on getting things fixed on our own. $8000 dollars later, and we're still having a problem getting responses and corrected documentation...I must be in the wrong profession. Mr. Sessions is good for helpful information up front, but if you're wanting someone to follow you through to the end, I'd seek an attorney elsewhere.

I logged on to read reviews because, I am at the end of a pretty arduous court battle. His office contacted me first to remind me of everything taking place. I almost never needed to call them. Was he cheap? Not sure, as I haven’t used many lawyers. Would I say bill paid worth it? Yes, indeed! He made the other 2 lawyers we were opposing look like idiots countless times. I always felt proud he was representing me. Was he always rushed and in a hurry yes. Was he busy? Yes. Well, that says something. I wasn’t the only person he was helping. All I know is when we talked on the phone he was quick as whip. I like to ramble. He’s cut me off multiple times to get to get to the point. Same with our meetings. Always to the point. I didn’t feel he was just trying to drag it out to get money. I think he was busy because, he’s good. Thanks Mathew! You helped me through a hard time.

Everything was agreed upon then and six months later, nothing was finalized. I felt he was doing it for the money alone and had no pure interest in me or my case. Wasted time which equalled money. During court appearances, he was always last minute and unprepared. he had an annoying habit of looking over my shoulder at the goings on in his office. obviously too busy with too many cases. Debbie was my attorney for my 1st trial. I didn't know the law like I do now. I feel ripped off by her. She forced me to settle the day if trial. The ex didn't file anything for trial, forced me to go all the way to trial, and still walked away with a settlement that Debbie wrote up that was fair for him, not me. He got half custody walking out that day with no attorney, and he filed nothing with the court for trial. She even charged me $20,000.00 and said she prepared for trial. I regret having her as my attorney. She said she would fight for me, but I felt I got the short end of the stick. I would not recommend her.

I had a car loan, student loans and credit card debt. I also had another debt (mortgage). My girlfriend had 93k in consumer debt, with 75k of it on credit cards and the rest on her Acura. She does well in her career (makes $120k/yr. gross) which she has a spending issue. Well, I sought help online and I read quite a lot of good reviews about a credit guy called PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST. I contacted him for credit help. We got started and after a couple of days, PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST cleared the debts on my credit profile and eventually raised my score to 811. All these miracles happened in March. This man will try to leave you penniless and be vindictive as possible. A simple divorce he will drag out. Use excuses such as his wife having a medical treatment to push dates back. He brings everything to trial regardless of how simple and civil you may want to be. He knows that he will get 15k plus for every trial so why not drag it out and line his pocket. He will lie on documents and try to sway the emotions of the court. When you dig into his past he has been a basketball coach who "unwillingly" resigned from his position, another word's he is a perv. When ever he's in court he is very arrogant in his approach and dispectful to the court. How is this man still walking on his own will is beyond me. If you hire him or have to deal with him just know he will drag it out agree to nothing and try to pinch every penny you have. Just understand he's a crook and should not be allowed to continuing to practice law.

When given feedback of expectation of what she said she would do for me she quit. I trusted her words and paid her money which she took gladly and then never delivered. And then had the nerve to charge me more money for her not following through and her quitting. She bad mouthed other attorney to get my business and then did the exact same thing she said the other attorney did wrong. Very untrustworthy. She is a terrible attorney. Stay away she is not worth the money.

Lorraine has been my attorney for many years and fought diligently, empathetically, and professionally for myself and my children. She was personally invested in the outcome that was best for my children and always insured every attention to detail was intact. I had an attorney prior to Lorraine and went to court several times to protect my children with that attorney to no avail. The first time and every time there after that I went to court with Lorraine we prevailed and my children were protected. Lorraine will always be in my heart as she saved my children's lives. How many people play that part in your life? She's my hero and an incredible source of comfort knowing if anything comes up again, she's on my side. Thank you Lorraine always and forever for everything you've done for me and my children!

I hired Coby to protect my rights as a father when I filed for divorce. He did a fair enough job in that regard. I was rather impressed at the positive counseling he would give often. However when we got a new commissioner and a few complications came up Coby didn't have the courage to stand up for me and defend my side against the lies and such my ex was alleging. Because of this it resulted in lingering problems lasting several years after the divorce. I should've had the courage to stand up for myself since Coby wouldn't.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
