Ladies, if you are getting divorced, this is the place you want to go, specifically Bart Johnson's team. Bart in particular will comfort and console you and even take you to his home in the avenues and sleep with you. Pictures of him and his clients have been taken exiting and kissing outside of his home, he prefers women of authority, like a doctor or a principal at a school as examples. If you want them to win a case for you however, that is where they lack. They file a lot, but don't succeed in much other than waste your money but at least you get screwed in more ways than one.

I engaged John Snow to represent me in March of 2023 with the only request being to remove a Trustee who had embezzled millions of dollars from a family Trust. The issue with it was that it implicates Kirton McConkie in the fraud so I made certain Parsons Behle had no problem going after “The Lords Lawyers” to which John responded “of course not” On April 14th 2013 he issued a letter to KMC law requesting answers to various questions but in the end has nothing to do with removing the Trustee. KMC Law refused to respond and John brought in Angus Edwards and Mindy Kids to assist. On June 7th or almost two months later Mr Edwards sent the exact letter knowing there would be no response.. August 9th 2023 the three attorneys filed an unrelated derivative claim against my siblings but did confirm the KMC fraud within the body; but just refused to add KMC as a defendant in this $100M estate case. August 18th The attorneys filed amended complaint forgetting to add the summons. They refiled three weeks later on Sept 12th but forgot to verify the complaint. Oct 3rd; I complained to John Snow via emails to which he responded “I do not have the time to read or respond to your questions and we are “done”! I paid approx $75k in fees and accruals to have a trustee removed and instead I was dropped the day before the hearing in which I was forced to go pro se against KMC who Judge Faust let off with a false Jurisdiction issue. He wasted 7 months of my life; took all of my money; and left me with no representation to face the law firm who refuses to account for my parents $100m estate which has been embezzled by my sister and Craig McCullough through “The Old Switcheroo”… Please review case# 230905835 wherein John Snow states Mr McCullough KMC Law has a Professional Conflict of interest and everything the law firm did should be “void” When asked why he refused to go after KMC Law and stand behind his words; he responded “just because I said it does not mean it is true”. All that Parsons and the three attorneys needed to say last March is “sorry; we have a conflict of interest”. But chose instead to breach their fiduciary duty to me and my daughters in favor of apparently keeping their fiduciary duty to the most prestigious religiously affiliated law firm in Utah.. I’m speechless as to how cold hearted and ruthless these attorneys are I’ve been dealing with for four years while being prohibited to see my own dad who is still alive and abandoned by KMC Law who he paid hundreds of thousands in fees to have them protect him; and not my sister Lisa Stephens and her husband Bryan.. Greed is a terrible curse..

If I could do a zero star: I would. I am writing this review because I feel a moral obligation to warn people about trusting this law firm. From the outset, it is deeply concerning that the attorney failed to prioritize my case by neglecting to thoroughly review the information provided by the guardian ad litem. This negligence reflects a lack of professionalism and diligence on their part. By disregarding crucial documentation that could have supported my case, they effectively hindered my ability to present a strong argument in court. Furthermore, the attorney's consistent denial of my requests to submit important documents is nothing short of unacceptable. As a client, I have the right to expect prompt and efficient service, especially when it comes to gathering evidence. The attorney's failure to prioritize my needs and instead divert their attention to unnecessary communication with the opposing party's attorney is a clear indication of their lack of commitment and disregard for my case. Equally troubling is the attorney's attempt to pass me off to other attorneys under the guise of providing them with "experience." This is a direct betrayal of my trust and confidence in their abilities. When I hired this attorney, I did so with the expectation that they would personally handle my case and provide the necessary expertise. Instead, they attempted to pawn me off onto less experienced attorneys, essentially treating my situation as a learning opportunity at my expense. The sense of bias that I felt from the beginning of my case is deeply distressing. It is the duty of any attorney to approach each case with objectivity and a commitment to ensuring their client's rights are protected. However, it appears that my attorney failed to uphold this fundamental principle. As a result, i was forced to constantly prove my worth as a fit mother, adding unnecessary stress and burden to an already difficult situation. I would have never hired anyone from this law firm after my initial experience with Britt Beckstrom. However, after moving on and hiring Brian Eggleston, he moved to this law firm and my experience with Brian was even worse than my experience with Mr Beckstom.

If you’re looking for a lawyer look elsewhere. Mike Branum is definitely not the guy to go to. He is two faced. He will act like he cares to your face then go behind your back and talk bad about you to opposing counsel. He is unprofessional and a liar. We hired a new attorney and he acted so surprised about many things that were brought up to his attention. Ended up finding out a lot of the thing he said and were told to him that were never once mentioned to us. I would recommend everyone to save their money and look elsewhere. *** Is that right because you NEVER told us what was going on you. We saw emails of you talking bad about YOUR OWN clients to opposing counsel. We have the evidence, is that professional? I think not, who talks bad about the people PAYING YOU. All you wanted to do was for us to give, give, give. What exactly were you doing to “help”. Go figure 😊

After interviewing several lawyers I decided to retain Kelly Ann Booth. I was impressed by how aggressive she was--though the retainer fee was steeper than other lawyers. I liked her personality and felt she would represent me well. That faded over time as she showed up late to my initial hearing. She never contacted me or kept me apprised of what was happening. I didn't feel like she was representing me very well so I found another lawyer. It was an expensive lesson--as I lost my entire retainer and didn't really have anything to show for it. I think she could be a very capable lawyer, but I wouldn't hire her or recommend her.

I was very impressed with Kelly Ann Booth and her partner Rudy Bautista. They are very aggressive defense attorneys. We fought my case to trial and after a 2 hour deliberation the jury came back not guilty. Such a gratifying moment. Kelly Ann and Rudy worked hard on my case from start to finish.

We had the honor of having Kelly Ann represent us recently for a criminal matter related to my spouse. Not only did Kelly Ann get us the best outcome possible and do an amazing job fighting on our behalf, she also helped us get through the whole expungement process as well to get the arrest taken off his record. If you find yourself or a loved one in trouble with the law, you can’t go wrong with Kelly Ann.

Not sure where to start on this amazing lady! My ex told me she hired one of the best attorneys in Utah,. I had no clue, I used Google and called first attorney. It was Veronica. She schooled my exes first and then second attorney. She is fair, she is human,. She understands the stress we are going through scared to loss our children. When I first hired her I was only seeing my kids a couple hours a week, nothing I had done just part of the games. I left with nothing but my dog and my guitar. I was in the worst possible divorce you could think of. It took time but now I have joint legal and Physical and got my fair share of equity and personal property. Something I didn't even know I should get. I will never forget going to her office one evening to drop of payment and she was working and her baby was sitting on her desk. That's when I knew I found right person. She is ultra dedicated, she will not sugar coat and she is amazing in court. She has ethics and Confidence. She knows the judges and what they don't want to hear. I am forever grateful for this lady. Well respected, I have sent another couple to her and they got same results. She does not waste your money. She will tell you what is worth fighting for. Thank you Veronica and her firm, much respect,

It’s clear that she either needs a better secretary or have a handle on the people that she represents and set up times to follow up on cases or petitions that she’s working on. I’ve called for a couple weeks no with no return call from her, and sent emails to a lawyer in her office who helps her: NO RESPONSE. It’s been 40 days since our petition was filed per her law office and the state of Utah requires 21 days for the served party to respond. Why haven’t we heard anything from her ?? Anytime we call this older woman answers “Law Offices” with a baby in the background crying or other noises. And it’s always an excuse why she doesn’t call back... or can’t answer the phone. We are extremely disappointed that Veronica eluded to her willingness and vowed dedication to help my husband see his daughter (as are his rights). But this is just poor business dealings. Strange how those who have cases that won’t pay more than a few hours of work never hear from her but those who go to court or are big cases are giving her rave reviews. Not impressed. Don’t take cases you can’t give 100% to, Veronica. It’s not a difficult concept. $2,000 retainer means you work for me. Not on your time. Do not hire her if you have an issue that requires her attention but won’t give her a big payout.

I hired Jared to help me reclaim my earnest money (thousands of dollars) from a real estate transaction where I had to pull out of the purchase. I knew I was in the right, but the real estate agents were being very difficult and I had spent weeks trying to work through it, but to no avail. Within a day of hiring Jared, I received a call that I could come pick up a check for the entire amount of my earnest money. Jared did a great job and did it fast. I would definitely recommend him to any body seeking an attorney.

Based on my consultations with them, Jaclyn and JR Law Group have some serious issues. Before you ever consider retaining this firm, take your time to read their draconian (excessively severe) fee agreement. The retainer and fee agreement for this firm is the worst retainer and fee agreement I’ve ever seen. It speaks to the kind of one-sided relationship a client would need to engage in with Jaclyn and her firm. I’m happy to share a few details, but when I very respectfully called to discuss what I found to be a one-sided agreement, Jaclyn called me back in a very aggressive, rude, condescending way, and told me if I had questions about her fee agreement that I basically needed to go away. That’s how she’ll handle conflicts with you. It’s her way or the highway, without consideration for you. By way of contrast, when I spoke with a very seasoned attorney, with extremely high reviews, about two concerns re: their contract, he was calm, kind, listened, offered their reasoning and we came to a mutual agreement. That’s how it’s supposed to be done Jaclyn and Elenia!! So here are a few details from the agreement: They require an extremely high retainer for the work considered. Theirs was more than twice as high as anyone else’s and 3X higher than Elenia said the main part of the case would cost. Unlike every law firm I’ve ever heard of or encountered, their fee agreement states that their “billing rates serve only as a BENCHMARK, and not the sole determinant of the value of the firms services for the client for billing purposes” and the primary attorney, at her sole discretion, can decide the value of the services. What that means is you don’t pay their hourly rate — you pay what they demand. That’s absurd and abusive!! There is no provision in the agreement for the client to review bills and let the firm know if they do not believe that the bill is accurate or if they have a question in the bill. Nothing. Rather than a fair provision to review your bill, it says that outstanding balances are “due UPON RECEIPT of the invoice” and provides the firm the right to auto debit the client’s credit card whatever amount they deem appropriate. They bill every two weeks. Imagine that you get a bill every two weeks and you have no time to review it and it is due the moment that you get it and they can auto charge your credit card whatever they decide you owe. Again, excessive. They have the right to quit your case, “at any time” according to their fee agreement, but specifically if you don’t forfeit your right to take time to review your bill because then you wouldn’t be paying immediately. If you had a billing or other issue and Jaclyn or Elenia were unreasonable in resolving it and your only option was to go to court (which is hopefully unlikely but it exists in the realm of possibility) they say that you must pay them while it’s being litigated and you grant them the right to lien your funds or property. It’s paragraph 9. Read that again: While you’re protecting your rights, they can lien your funds or property. In my interaction with Jaclyn, it’s clear she is a very high conflict person. So your chances of resolving a disagreement with her or her firm (Elenia hides behind her) are likely slim. Her contract leaves you with ZERO power in the dynamic. I believe that’s how she wants it. I’ve spent two decades mentoring tens of thousands of women and empowering them. This firm is not for you if you want to stand in your power and have a fair, trustworthy, equitable relationship with your lawyer.

Honestly, I could not have asked for a better attorney. First, I never hoped to ever need an attorney for my divorce, but secondly, I always heard about how horrible attorney's are for returning their client's phone calls. Never have I been more wrong. Who would have thought my attorney would be so quick to answer all of my questions whether it be through email, phone, or sometimes even for a last minute in-office visit? Unfortunately, divorce is becoming more and more common. If anyone needs a divorce, this is the guy to go to!

I watched my friend get eaten alive by the opposing counsel. Lillian just sat there shuffling papers. No objections the whole time from her. Sloppy, unorganized. Unprepared to represent anyone. She also didn’t keep my friend informed of anything going on for weeks and days before the divorce hearing. I seriously question her competence.

Don't use her. She doesn't know what she is doing. Getting a bill from her is impossible. No accounting. Just tells you what you owe her, but you can't get a breakdown on what charges are for. PLUS, she is untrustworthy.

Chad was extremely helpful in my case and went above and beyond what I expected. He was timely in his communication and made me feel like I was his only client. Please read this before hiring Chad Shattuck or his firm to represent you. I am a former client of Chad’s and I am only writing this review after trying multiple times to resolve my concerns with him and his law firm. Their unwillingness to stand by their work and make things right has been very disappointing and makes what would have been a 2 or 3-star review (or no review at all) a definite 1-star review. While he was representing me, Chad was okay to work with and I didn’t have too many complaints, but after my divorce went through, I discovered critical mistakes were made in my divorce paperwork relating to retirement account division that led to an unexpected tax loss of $3,700. In speaking with other attorneys, the penalty could have been avoided if Chad understood basic retirement account division in divorce, had advised me appropriately, and drafted my paperwork correctly. As a new single mom, having to come up with thousands of dollars I was not planning on was financially painful to me and my kids at an already stressful time. When I contacted Chad and pointed out the problem, he was dismissive and initially told me I didn’t know what I was talking about. When I pursued the issue and pointed him to the specific things that he had not done correctly, he changed his position and told me he had never advised me to do it that way. When given proof that he did in fact advise me incorrectly, he stopped responding to me. I understand everyone makes mistakes. What upset me most was that when I respectfully brought the mistakes to his and his law firm’s attention, instead of looking into the issue and trying to make it right, they have done everything possible to avoid responsibility for the mistakes made. This has been extremely disappointing because when you pay a professional like Chad thousands of dollars for their expertise and advice in order to have things done correctly, there is a certain level of expectation that when mistakes are made, they will stand by their work and make things right, and this has simply not happened. Avoid them if you can!

My mother has used Scott for a long time and never had much of an issue, HOWEVER...I retained him in January of 2023 for a child protective order I had filed on behalf of my son against my ex, and in court, despite the overwhelming evidence, he more or less just sat there and did nothing which allowed my ex to get it dismissed. Fast forward to now (December 2023) and I have filed to gain full custody of my son, called Scott again more due to history to see if he'd be willing to take the case, said he would but we'd need to get the hearing date changed due to him not being available that day, ok that's fine, we also had a verbal agreement between us directly that he was willing to wait on payment for retainer so we could get the money, but he would start on everything right away, upon attempting 3 DIFFERENT TIMES to come in and sign the retention paperwork, I was turned away by paralegals that "needed to talk to him first" about what? I made the agreement with him, not with a paralegal. Finally was able to come in to sign the papers, but I was told by Josie that he "needed everything up front first" 100% contrary to what we agreed to, and that "HE was the one who said it" yet refused to ask him with me standing there to confirm, as he came out of his office and saw me sitting there, and to this day still have not gotten a return email or phone call to confirm or deny any of this Like others have said, if you want to not be jerked around by this firm, then don't bother even talking to them, and they've missed out on a retainer and a guaranteed case win that would bolster their reputation Oh well 🤷‍♂️

Scott did help me with my divorce case, but when it came to needing follow up done he sent a letter to my ex and pretty much told me I was on my own to fill the paperwork out, but charged me 300 for what! sending a letter!!! He wouldn't continue helping me with my case but charged me anyways. Sounds like a waste of money to me! Sad Just make sure he likes you and maybe he will finish the case.

It's been a while, but it's probably worth sharing my experience with Marilyn. Better late than never. I went through my divorce back in 08. I hired Marilyn, who told me to put an order on my (now) x wife, because I told her she had punched me in the face on multiple occasions and pulled a gun on me once. When I returned to Marilyn's office to read what they had drawn up, I wouldn't sign it because it wasn't truthful. There were things added I had never mentioned. I had to pay Marilyn more money to have her assistant Grant change things back the way I originally said it happened... We ended up at the old 4th District Court and as a group of us were sitting in a waiting room before court, Marilyn asked everyone to leave the room except me. She then told me to lie in court and when I told her I wouldn't, she told me I was "too difficult to work with" and basically dumped me right before court. The order was dropped and I was left with a massive bill, over $10k. Anyway, her and Ron Wilkinson, my x wife's attorney, were a couple of mud slingers who clearly only cared about getting paid and doing the right thing. I would never recommend either of those two, unless you're into that bs.

I also heard they Marilyn was a great attorney. I was married for about 28 years, was hoping I would get at least 28% of my ex’s half million dollar a year income, I didn’t. I helped put him through phd school, stayed home with the kids while he was out of town alll the time and took care of EVERYTHING! I did the acre of yard work by my self, was the one who cleaned the garage and had no maid for a 5,000 sq ft home. When I said I did everything I mean it. But, I guess I was not worth 28%. She did not put in the decree his documentation of some the percent of the alimony I am suppose to get so now I just have to take his word on my portion, so frustrating obviously he is not an honest person. He purchased a brand new bmw 2 weeks after the divorce, had plastic surgery, has been on multiple vacations and is building a big brand new home while I am trying to keep my bills paid and flip credit cards to gets points everywhere to be able to take my kids on vacations. I am older, have no skills due to being a stay at home mom and taking care of our family, so I am unable to get a decent job. Marilyn is a nice person but, I don’t feel like I got what I should have. I also feel like if we would have met and had a plan before mediation it many have worked out better. She made me feel like I was already a winner going into mediation but, did. It feel like one after.

I was terrified of my ex, because he was trying to manipulate me in every possible way. Our marriage was dysfunctional. I asked around for referrals for a divorce lawyer and Marilyn’s name came up. I called right away and was scheduled in. I just felt good about it. It was only after I hired her that I heard she was the most intimidating and honest attorney in Utah. She knows what she’s doing and strives to be fair and reasonable. But she takes no BS. My ex tried to take our kids, tried to say I was mentally unstable, and tried every way possible to get out of child support. He’s still trying, over a year later. :) I was an emotional wreck and Marilyn was there for me, every step of the way. When, during mediation, my ex brought up for the first time that he thought I was too “mentally ill” to have our kids, I started panicking. She held my hand and told me firmly that she would never let that happen to me. I relaxed, and for the rest of our mediation, I calmly watched her SLAY the competition. She did not back down. I ended up getting more than I thought I’d ever win. To the point where I actually felt bad for my ex. I expressed this to her and she told me that what we’d won was fair, and that I was going to need it. She was right, and I still consider hiring her as the best thing I could have done during my divorce.

I can’t say enough good things about The Park Firm. From day 1 I was welcomed in and treated with respect. Throughout the entire divorce process Jim was very knowledgeable and focused on my case. The #1 thing that I can say that blew me away about the park firm is that Jim was always concerned and watching out for how much this was costing me. He didn’t request or review any unnecessary documents form my Ex’s attorney. Jim knew what I was wanting for an end result and stuck to the plan. Didn’t contact me unnecessarily and therefore saved me a bunch of money on this particular case. The girls working behind the scenes in the office were very knowledgeable and always willing to answer questions. Very quick to respond. I can not say enough good things about The Park Firm. Highly recommended, and I will use them for all of my future needs.

Went through the Park firm for my divorce. I had an unusual situation and The park Firm was amazing! I needed Treyson to be my voice because I was too scared to stand on my own. Which he did I never made me feel small about it. Treyson was always proactive with things that needed to be done. Took a long time waiting for the other side to do the things that they needed to do. Which made me appreciate even more that my lawyer was on top of all the things he could be. The receptionists were very kind, ynderstanding, knowledgeable and were able to answer many questions I had about my case. Not only do I highly recommend this firm, but I recommend anybody going through a bad situation to retain a lawyer. It's a lot easier to start off with one who will stand for you and protect you, then try to change legalities later.

So we hired Roy to help my husband with something. We went to court the first time and Roy did nothing to defend my husband. NOTHING! my husband paid him $2200 to hire him and that was all he owed. Well we the went to court the 2nd time and Roy AGAIN did nothing to defend my husband with a case we had. He would say, “ I will take care of you , don’t worry. I will help you. “. He didn’t take care of anything. He just kinda shrugged his shoulders like oh well. We went to court again to appeal something and the judge told my husband that he would let him get rid of what he had going. Well everything was ok. Well the Roy emailed my husband and said the he owed $750 dollars for extra work that he went above and beyond to get the outcome we did. And then he told my husband that, “I cannot control the judge.” He said if we do not pay him he will take us to small claims court, get a judgement on him and take it from you, the choice is yours. He never said a word about my husband having to pay more. I will never recommend anyone to him.

Attorney Karra Porter said she would send a gramma request to get a 911 call and other police records for our family. After a month or two I called back to follow up and her paralegal stated that they had forgot to do it due to a family emergency but that they would definitely still do it. After another month or so I called back to see if there were any updates and was not called back. Over a period of close to 4-6 months they have not returned my phone calls or voicemails. At one point the receptionist told me that Karra would call me back the next day and she did not. If they were not interested or willing to look into this I would have found another attorney. But both Karra and her paralegal said they would do this for me and they did not; or if they have done it they have not given me any updates. Due to this delay we have now passed the 1 year mark of my family member’s passing and may not be able to hold the city accountable if there was in fact any neglect of duty. I believed that Karra was sincere in her willingness to help out my family but due to either her failure to act or failure to inform us of any actions taken, she has done our family more harm than if she would have simply declined.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
