...Greg Wall’s office shouts, “Get the hell out!” Unprofessional: Stood me up in court. Refused calls. Lost paperwork repeatedly, until I started emailing instead. Unapologetic: Wasted the entire time until, on the last day, I switched to Scott Brown and Brian Coutts who won $200,000 in a short period of time for about the same cost. Greg Wall made NO effort until it came time to collect his $30,000+ for doing nothing. I would love to meet these other people who gave him 5 stars. I suspect they’re members of his church ward.

Greg represented me on my divorce modification. He did a wonderful job representing me. He was very clear in where I stood and rather than making any promises he just got the job done. His experience shows in the way he handled my case. My x-wife's attorney was very difficult to deal with and rather than thumping his chest and making matters worse he handled her in a very cool and calm matter. Greg did everything he could to avoid going to trial and he succeded not only in that outcome, but getting everything resolved fairly. I was very pleased with the way everything was settled. Kudos also to his assistant Victoria. She was extremely helpful. I highly recommend using Wall and Wall.

I highly recommend Gregory Wall for your legal needs. He immediately honed in on the situation, came up with solutions, and ultimately made us feel at ease with my legal case. When armed with information, your level of stress decreases. Gregory always had time for us and came up with concrete, poignant solutions with a kind delivery. I value his knowledge and appreciate his willingness to help us through a very sticky mess.

I hired Diana a few years ago and put her on a retainer to help with family law issues pertaining to child custody. She helped me understand the law in the State of Utah and how it applied to my situation. Diana is an empathic listener who explains the law in understandable terms. She is prompt in her communications and always asks what the overall goal is for each call. I felt very empowered after each time I communicated with her. I'm very pleased with the outcome of my case and I highly recommend working with her!

When I set out to find an attorney to represent me in my divorce, I knew I was very interested in the collaborative process, but I knew nothing about it and if was the best route to take. It ALL felt overwhelming and scary. Minutes after my general inquiry to the Utah Association of Collaborative Professionals, Diana reached out to me with information about the collaborative process. I called her almost immediately. She was generous with her time and knowledge, helping me get clear and feel a little less anxious about the process. Needless to say, I hired her. Throughout the process, Diana listened, was responsive (which was SUPER important to me), compassionate, competent and straight forward. I felt I could trust her and knew she had my back. When things got tense she did her best to diffuse things, but when it was necessary she got tough. I would absolutely recommend the collaborative process and I would absolutely recommend hiring Diana.

I hired Diana as my divorce attorney specifically because she offers a collaborative divorce option, and I wanted things to go as amicably as possible. When a divorce on "cohesive terms" did not work out at all, Diana helped me navigate the ups and downs of the divorce process. She even offered to work on Memorial Day so that my ex-husband and I could come to an agreement. During both mediation sessions we had, Diana sought out a very professional and helpful mediator. Both Diana and the mediator carefully explained the pros and cons of the offers as we went back and forth. I am satisfied with the outcome of my divorce. I appreciate Diana being at my side the whole way, answering questions, clarifying points, explaining the process, and calling me to offer support. While divorce is a slow and painful course, Diana was steadfast and hard working. I am grateful that Diana, using her professional skills, and also her humanity, guided me through a very hard time in life.

I can't say enough good things about Brenda and her assistant Amy. I first met with Brenda when I was still in shock after my ex-husband left our family via text for his mistress. I interviewed several attorneys and immediately felt the most comfortable with Brenda. While I wasn't ready to file at that time, I was so grateful for her support and advice. A couple months later I did file for divorce and I couldn't have asked for better service. She is an excellent communicator and advocate. She answered questions/emails quickly and billing was transparent. She always made sure I was well prepared and understood every step of the process and exactly what to expect. I felt overwhelmed at some points, but always knew what I needed to do next. She helped me achieve the best possible outcome for myself and my kids. She also provided excellent advice when I needed the help of our local police department to stop my husband's girlfriend's harassment of me and my son. Truly she was part legal counsel and part counselor. I never thought I would find myself going through a divorce, but I couldn't have been in better hands. Don't hesitate to hire Brenda!

I originally hired a divorce attorney out of Salt Lake City where I live. He seemed smart and I figured he was similar to most attorneys and would do a great job. Long story short, I fired him. He was not a good advocate, a very poor communicator and I was being taken. A friend of mine recommended Brenda Beaton, she is based out of Ogden, but well worth the drive. However, I needed a "great" attorney, so I interviewed and hired her that day. Brenda is a take charge attorney. She is intelligent, knows the law, and fought hard for me. She communicated everything she was doing and would always reply if I had questions or concerns. I highly recommend hiring Brenda.

I went through the most surprising, undeserving, painful , and shocking experiences in my life this year that progressively got worse till it could worsen out. Anyway a family tried to frame me up in the nastiest way possible and I sought help from Attorney Steve of Christensen law. He saved me out of this situation that has landed most innocent people like me in jail. Highly recommended!

Kyle Witherspoon has a brilliant legal mind. But what makes him such an excellent attorney is his ability to vigorously represent his clients with a compassion and humanity that many other lawyers lack. In every instance where I have brought a legal matter to Kyle, he’s done exactly that while achieving great results. As a fellow attorney, I have no hesitation recommending Kyle to anyone looking for legal representation.

I was introduced to Kyle Witherspoon through a family member. I live out of the state but the issue was involving someone in Utah. Of course this added another layer of work and representation, but he and Katelyn Kendall were always very responsive, worked with me to answer my questions and keep me informed of the process. They were always very professional and I would definitely use them again. You will be in good hands if you use Kyle and Katelyn.

This one star review is for PGAL, Sam Sorensen. Overcharged for rediculous items, and added no value. Minimal effort to collect a check, and poor judgement. In the end, God knows. Thank heavens for Anna Trupp, our custody evaluator. She came through for us in the end. Think about a custody evaluator over a PGAL, is my recommendation. Especially if you have parents on the other side involved in various versions of substance abuse. It’s not just clients that feel this way, it’s attorneys in the industry that see his lack of effort, as well.

I first met Nathan at my first appearance where he gave me his card and told me what to say to the judge to get enough time to find counsel. I reached out to him and he helped me work out a payment plan and let me know how he would proceed from there. The past 6ish months, he has taken amazing care of me. He was always available to meet to answer any questions or concerns I had. His knowledge of our justice system is impeccable and he was able to significantly reduce and even dismiss some of my charges. He’s even willing to go back to court with you the next year to fully close your case. I would absolutely recommend him to anyone looking for an attorney. Thanks a billion, Nathan!

Ron has been my attorney for a little over two years as I navigated a highly contentious divorce. I’ve also worked with his associate, Jennifer closely and often. They have been an absolute dream team. They have always looked out for the best interest of my kids and I and did everything in their power to get us through this process and into a better place so we can heal and move forward. They were always prepared, listened to my experiences and concerns, explained things well, and were often available quickly when situations would arise unexpectedly but needed attention. Ron is wonderful at balancing the line of keeping peace and avoiding conflict when possible, but being aggressive and an advocate when he needs to be. Every time we were in court he was prepared, quick with information and answers, and aware of even the smallest details of my case. I had complete confidence in him in the courtroom, which brought me some peace in very stressful situations. Jennifer is adept in the legal world and has always been able to answer my questions and help me understand the process. But the most beautiful thing about her is she can do that while still holding space for compassion and empathy for the ways this experience affects a person emotionally. That’s not an easy combination to find in an attorney. Ron and Jennifer saw me as a person, not just as another one of their many clients. They trusted me as much as I trusted them and believed in me during the times it was hard for me to believe in myself. They guided me with great legal advice while still allowing me to trust my gut, they always had my back. As things are finally coming to a close, I am infinitely grateful that I had them in my corner during the hardest part of my life. Heritage Law lived up to its name, because the ways they helped me and my kids will undoubtedly have a positive ripple effect in our family for many generations to come.

Before we hired Ron Wilkinson we read reviews and wondered if the poor reviews were credible since they seemed so different compared to the good reviews. Well, after experiencing Ron Wilkinson firsthand for ourselves, we can confirm the poor reviews about him are credible. When we had our consultation, Ron told us quote, “I can probably get this case resolved with one phone call.” And he said that we would get the rest of our “retainer back to spend on Christmas.” We understood it wasn't a guarantee but that it was a good probability he could get the case resolved with one promised phone call since that is what he told us. Ron never made that promised phone call. We emailed him and called the office countless times over the next 6 weeks. We did not receive replies to our emails or any callbacks. We finally scheduled a phone call in advance to speak with Ron, which costs almost $400 an hour. We asked Ron if he made that one phone call yet that he promised us. He seemed surprised we remembered him promising he would make this phone call and that he probably could get this case resolved on that one phone call and that we expected him to make that call. He said the individual he was going to call was hard to get a hold of. We did not believe he was telling us the truth. Another time opposing counsel sent us a very harassing email on a Thursday filled with lies and threatening sanctions (court fines) against us if we didn't reply by Monday. We called Ron's office, we emailed Ron and forwarded onto him the harassing email. Ron never called us back, never emailed us back. We made it clear this was an emergency and we heard nothing but crickets. We had to reply to the email ourselves and represent ourselves in order to get the email back to this other unprofessional attorney by Monday. It is almost impossible to communicate with Ron. He does not reply to emails or return phone calls. If you want to talk on the phone, you have to schedule a call weeks in advance for almost $400 an hour. But there are times when emergencies or situations arise that you need a relatively quick response. Then when you do get a rare chance to talk to him, it's very difficult to bring up your concerns to him as he gets easily triggered and he has a short temper. Ron even told us he gets easily triggered. We were scared to say anything to him. Ron often engages in manipulative gas-lighting techniques where he creates a false narrative and tries to place the blame for his irresponsible actions onto us and blame us for his bad actions. As one example he would accuse us of not listening when Ron is the one who was not listening to us. The ultimate betrayal was when Ron falsely told the court we agreed to things which we absolutely did NOT agree to. Ron or his office also engage in falsifying their bills. As one specific example we were charged $720 for witnesses being served subpoenas. However only 4 witnesses were subpoenaed at a cost of $18.50 each which would be a total of $74, not $720. When we point this out to both Ron and his office asking them what is going on with the billing, we again receive no response. We also had to do a lot of babysitting. We had to constantly call and email over and over and over to make sure things are getting done. For example, we called multiple times about correctly scheduling something. We were finally told there were about 5 dates to choose from and we would get a call back to get our permission to schedule the time and place. About a week goes by with no one calling us back. So we have to call into the office again. And we are told that the thing was scheduled without ever talking to us. And this thing was scheduled at a time we could NOT make and at a place we clearly did NOT agree to. So we have to spend more time and more money getting it rescheduled and fixed to the correct place. In short, instead of us being properly represented, there were multiple times we were misrepresented by our own counsel.

3.5 STAR REVIEW OF CHAD STEUR LAW Chad regularly lies and tramples the rules--which might be fine to you, if you benefit from his cheating. He is an impetuous attack dog who cares about his clients and fights hard for them. He is what people, myself included, look for in a litigator. While most attorneys are averse to conflict, Chad is not. Moreover, Chad is not greedy like many attorneys. Then why not a five-star review, you say? Chad's problem is that he lacks wisdom. He fights--and usually wins--legal battles that might ultimately, and unwittingly, lead to your losing the war. Though I recommend Chad, he is like nitroglycerine; so I suggest you consult a second attorney before you let Chad loose. (The above is my opinion as a lay person based on my dealings with Chad Steur. I do not present it as a statement of irrefutable fact.)

I had an international family law case. I would have preferred a lawyer not taking the money they way she did, as the experience and practice not in international family law was not present, instead of taking a case and then having me do some of the work as it was in a different language. Poor experience and then I received follow up and change in procedures that were never addressed (regardless their contrary guidance) then consequently a withdrawal of counsel. Horrible experience. Would not recommend

Working through my divorce with Ashley and Brooke made the whole awful process a lot more tolerable. They worked quickly and efficiently and always responded to my calls and emails immediately. Ashley is always calm and level headed and was never ruffled by my ex's crazy antics. I really appreciated this quality in her. I would highly recommend BartonWood to anyone in need of a family law firm.

Ashley Wood is amazing. I hired her for assistance with my relocation case. She is very knowledgeable in family law and has a passion for what she does. She is very attentive and prompt in all of my encounters with her. I appreciate how she listens to my concerns and is very honest with me in what can potentially take place in my case. I completely trust that she is always looking out for the best situation for me and my children.

Our experience working with Patricia Kuendig was beyond what we ever could have hoped for. The issues of our case spanned over a decade and included numerous ambiguities. Multiple mediators, a commissioner, and a judge all stated that this was a very complicated case. I hate to think what the outcome would have been if we had not been in the competent hands of Patricia and her amazing paralegal, Kristy. We were able to see Patricia in multiple settings including in front of a Commissioner (where we prevailed), the Summit County Judge (after the opposing party appealed previous rulings), and in two separate mediations. Watching how Patricia carries herself and operates in a courtroom setting brought us so much peace of mind and confidence. Each time we left the law firm offices or the courtroom, the first thing my husband and I would say to each other was "thank god we have Patricia." As insane as this is to say, while we are beyond happy this case is over, we are sad to no longer be working with Patricia and Kristy! Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.

Russell took my case and then took a very circuitous approach to resolving what (turned out to be in someone else's hands) a slam dunk resolution, only to announce that he was quitting the law. He then charged me his full rate to spend many hours transferring the case to my new counsel, who looked over Russell's work unable to understand much of his strategy. The ethics of taking my case knowing he was preparing to quit law (he's apparently since returned) and then changing me plenty for his decision, are deeply troubling to me. I cannot recommend Russell Gray.

If I could do a zero star: I would. I am writing this review because I feel a moral obligation to warn people about trusting this law firm. From the outset, it is deeply concerning that the attorney failed to prioritize my case by neglecting to thoroughly review the information provided by the guardian ad litem. This negligence reflects a lack of professionalism and diligence on their part. By disregarding crucial documentation that could have supported my case, they effectively hindered my ability to present a strong argument in court. Furthermore, the attorney's consistent denial of my requests to submit important documents is nothing short of unacceptable. As a client, I have the right to expect prompt and efficient service, especially when it comes to gathering evidence. The attorney's failure to prioritize my needs and instead divert their attention to unnecessary communication with the opposing party's attorney is a clear indication of their lack of commitment and disregard for my case. Equally troubling is the attorney's attempt to pass me off to other attorneys under the guise of providing them with "experience." This is a direct betrayal of my trust and confidence in their abilities. When I hired this attorney, I did so with the expectation that they would personally handle my case and provide the necessary expertise. Instead, they attempted to pawn me off onto less experienced attorneys, essentially treating my situation as a learning opportunity at my expense. The sense of bias that I felt from the beginning of my case is deeply distressing. It is the duty of any attorney to approach each case with objectivity and a commitment to ensuring their client's rights are protected. However, it appears that my attorney failed to uphold this fundamental principle. As a result, i was forced to constantly prove my worth as a fit mother, adding unnecessary stress and burden to an already difficult situation. I would have never hired anyone from this law firm after my initial experience with Britt Beckstrom. However, after moving on and hiring Brian Eggleston, he moved to this law firm and my experience with Brian was even worse than my experience with Mr Beckstom.

During one of the darkest times in my life I hired Laura as my divorce attorney. She was kind and yet so knowledgeable of the law. She always kept me informed of procedures and timetables with the proceeding. Divorce is never an easy process and she made far better than I could have imagined. She is very professional and yet is able to listen and know what needs to be done and how to do it. I would recommend her highly to anyone I know.

My case had to do with custody of my child. Michael did not represent me well in court or I should say almost not at all. Me and Studebaker had conversations about things the other party was trying to use against me and he was supposed to look into some things to get it dismissed because it was incorrect. He completely forgot about these conversations we had, and in court when the matter was brought up he looked at me and asked “is that true”. Very unprofessional when we had a couple conversations about it. When I tried speaking to him to have him bring up certain points he pretty much shushed me and I looked ridiculous while the other party got his way. I left the court so in shock and in tears because I did not deserve that treatment especially since I had to pull money out of my butt for this help that I did not get. When trying to reach out to studebaker for a week to go over my concerns, he would not even give me the time of day unless I was on his schedule and he was charging me by the minute. So I never even got to voice my concerns to him because he did not care. I would not recommend him for custody. He just showed up for the money and didn’t pay attention to the clients needs and facts AT ALL and certainly did not remember them. I am a great mother who had financially provided while the other party got away with not financially providing for 4 1/2 years. I have always worked and I deserved much better than that.

Lance Starr was my attorney in 2012 to 2019 he fought so much for me he represented me in a cancellation of removal. He appear personally in each court hearing and worked with my local attorney to release me from custody and fight my case. He made possible for me to be released from jail and continue the fight from outside. In the long process he was able to support my case in making the immigration Judge see the hardship my deportation will cause to my family. In the end I was deported and I had a different attorney fight my appeal with BIA. In the end because Lance C Start was able to prove the hardship, my new attorney was amazed of Lance and my case was remanded to the immigration court again. This time the immigration judge granted me the reliefs and Permanent Residency. The fight is over and I am forever grateful to Lance. He was the master and maker of immigration fight. His team and everyone that was on my side. Thank you and you want this team on your side. LANCE WE DID IT!! Thank you!! ☺️ Forever grateful to Lance and his team.

What a Family Law Lawyer Can Do for You

A family law lawyer provides legal services related to family relationships, including marriage, divorce, child custody, and adoption. Family lawyers help clients navigate emotionally charged legal issues, providing guidance and representation in disputes that affect spouses, children, and parents. Whether you're going through a divorce, seeking custody of your children, or drafting a prenuptial agreement, a family law lawyer ensures your rights are protected and your interests are represented.

Family law attorneys often handle sensitive matters and offer objective legal advice, helping clients reach fair outcomes either through negotiation, mediation, or litigation.

When Should I Hire a Family Law Lawyer?

Hiring a family law lawyer is beneficial in several situations, especially when legal matters involve close personal relationships. Common reasons to hire a family law lawyer include:

  • Divorce or separation: When ending a marriage, a lawyer can help you navigate issues such as division of assets, spousal support, and child custody arrangements.
  • Child custody and visitation disputes: If you and your co-parent can't agree on custody or visitation, a lawyer can represent your interests and work toward a solution that benefits your children.
  • Child support: Whether you’re seeking child support or defending against a claim, a lawyer can help ensure the appropriate amount is calculated and enforced.
  • Prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: A lawyer can help draft or review agreements that protect your assets in case of divorce.
  • Adoption: Family law lawyers guide you through the legal process of adoption, ensuring that all requirements are met.
  • Domestic violence or restraining orders: If you're a victim of domestic violence or being falsely accused, a lawyer can help you obtain or challenge protective orders.
  • Paternity cases: If there are questions about the paternity of a child, a lawyer can help establish or dispute legal fatherhood.

Hiring a lawyer early can prevent issues from escalating, and they can offer you the best chance of achieving a favorable outcome in emotionally charged situations.

What Does a Family Law Lawyer Do?

A family law lawyer provides a wide range of services depending on your specific legal needs. Their responsibilities may include:

  • Advising on legal rights and options: Helping you understand your legal rights regarding divorce, child custody, support, and other family law issues.
  • Filing legal documents: Drafting and filing petitions, motions, and agreements with the court, such as divorce papers, custody agreements, or support orders.
  • Representing clients in court: Arguing your case in front of a judge if a settlement can’t be reached through negotiation or mediation.
  • Mediation and negotiation: Assisting with alternative dispute resolution methods, such as mediation, to reach agreements on issues like custody, property division, and support without going to trial.
  • Enforcing court orders: Helping you enforce court orders related to child support, alimony, or custody if the other party fails to comply.
  • Drafting prenuptial or postnuptial agreements: Creating agreements that protect your assets in the event of a divorce.
  • Handling adoption proceedings: Ensuring that the legal process of adoption is followed, from filing paperwork to finalizing the adoption in court.

How Are Family Law Lawyers Paid?

Family law lawyers typically charge clients in one of several ways, depending on the complexity of the case and the lawyer’s experience. Common payment arrangements include:

  • Hourly rates: Most family lawyers charge by the hour, with rates varying based on experience and location. Clients are billed for the time spent working on their case, including consultations, court appearances, and document preparation.
  • Flat fees: For more straightforward legal services, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, some lawyers offer flat-fee arrangements.
  • Retainer fees: In cases that are expected to require significant time and attention, such as contentious custody battles, a lawyer may charge a retainer, which is an upfront payment that covers the initial costs of legal services. The lawyer then bills against the retainer as they work on your case.

The exact cost will depend on the complexity of your case and the lawyer’s fee structure, which should be discussed upfront.

How Much Does a Family Law Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a family law lawyer varies based on factors such as the lawyer's experience, the location, and the complexity of your case. Here are some general cost guidelines:

  • Hourly rates: Family law lawyers typically charge between $150 and $500 per hour, depending on their experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Flat fees: For simpler cases, such as drafting a prenuptial agreement or handling an uncontested divorce, fees may range from $1,000 to $5,000.
  • Retainers: For more complex matters, such as contested divorces or custody battles, lawyers may charge a retainer ranging from $2,500 to $10,000 or more. The lawyer will bill against the retainer for the work they do on your case.
  • Additional costs: You may also be responsible for additional costs, such as filing fees, mediation fees, or expert witness fees.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of the lawyer’s fees and any additional expenses during your consultation.

Top Questions to Ask a Family Law Lawyer

Before hiring a family law lawyer, it's important to ask questions to ensure they're the right fit for your case. Here are key questions to ask during your consultation:

  1. What experience do you have with family law cases like mine?
Make sure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it's a contested divorce, child custody dispute, or adoption.
  2. How will you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges by the hour, a flat fee, or requires a retainer. Ask for an estimate of the total costs involved.
  3. What are the possible outcomes of my case?
An experienced lawyer should be able to give you a general idea of what to expect based on the facts of your case.
  4. What is your approach to resolving disputes?
Ask whether the lawyer tends to favor negotiation and mediation or whether they prefer to take cases to court. This can help you determine if their style matches your goals.
  5. How long do you expect my case to take?
While it’s difficult to predict, the lawyer should give you an estimate based on similar cases.
  6. Who will be handling my case?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may do much of the work, so make sure you understand who will be your main point of contact.

How to Check the Credibility of a Family Law Lawyer

To ensure you're hiring a reputable family law lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and reputation:

  • Check state bar association records: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice in your state and is in good standing with no disciplinary actions.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on websites like Avvo, Google, or Martindale-Hubbell. Previous clients can give you insight into the lawyer’s professionalism and success in family law cases.
  • Request references: Ask the lawyer for references from past clients who can speak to their experience with the lawyer.
  • Review their website or professional profile: Look at the lawyer’s background, case history, and areas of focus to ensure they have substantial experience in family law.
  • Look for professional memberships: Membership in reputable organizations, such as the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML), can indicate a lawyer's expertise and dedication to family law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a family law lawyer, it’s important to come prepared. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Relevant documents: Bring any documents related to your case, such as marriage certificates, prenuptial agreements, financial records, custody agreements, or court orders.
  • List of assets and debts: For divorce cases, prepare a detailed list of all assets (e.g., homes, bank accounts, retirement funds) and debts (e.g., mortgages, loans, credit card balances).
  • Details of the family issue: Provide a written summary of the situation, including key dates and facts related to your divorce, custody dispute, or support issue.
  • Questions for the lawyer: Write down any questions you have about the legal process, costs, and potential outcomes.
  • Your goals: Be prepared to discuss your objectives, such as custody arrangements, property division, or spousal support, so the lawyer understands your priorities.

Being organized and clear about your situation will help the lawyer evaluate your case more effectively and offer the best advice for moving forward.
