Elizabeth was very friendly and nice to talk to, but her experience really disappointed my expectation. I interviewed 5 immigration lawyers before finally deciding on one to apply for an O-1 visa. Among the 5, Elizabeth's firm charged the most for initial consultation ($250), which gave me an expectation that they must be very experienced with O-1. But after meeting with her, I realized that she was actually the second least experienced one among the 5 I interviewed. She was not sure if she should take my case so she had to consult with her colleague halfway during our consultation. She took the USCIS O-1 criteria documents word by word and said she was not sure if I qualified. She discouraged me to apply and suggested I should come back to her in 6 months. Our conversation was pleasant, she sounded professional and she even looked up documents on her computer for a small question I asked. But thinking back about my experience with her, these were all signs of inexperience. The lawyer I picked at the end gave me a lot more insights on O-1 application, was confident on my case, and answered my small question straight from her experience without the need of looking up anything, because she has done so many more similar cases. My application went very smooth, it was approved in 10 days. After that, I told many of my friends who were seeking O-1: don't be discouraged by one lawyer who said you don't qualify, they said that because they have not dealt with any complex cases. Consult with multiple and use your best judgement.

I switched my GC case to Liz from another lawyer in 2012 and that was probably the best decision I took in my 8 years of GC processing! Liz was transparent, cared about making progress, very proactive in follow ups and got the job done. She is the only lawyer I know who will follow up with USCIS on your case without you even asking... I got my GC this month! Thanks Liz..

Elizabeth is honest, caring, extremely patient when explaining complex details of immigration law, and manages expectations appropriately. She never promised me anything she wasn't sure she could deliver and was always available to answer questions or give advice.

They ONLY help the rich, powerful, and those with connections. Did an excellent job with Ms Carroll, but there are thousands of regular people who suffered abuse on a daily basis and not just one encounter like Ms Carroll, yet this firm only goes for the high profile cases and does not care about the rest of the women out there who endured heinous abuse simply because we are not rich, powerful or have connections.

I had the pleasure of working with an exceptional attorney, Chris Sally, over at Queller, Fisher, Washor, Fuchs & Kool, and the Law Office of William A. Gallina, LLP, for the past couple of years. His dedication and expertise in handling my case were truly outstanding, going above and beyond in every aspect. Thanks to his diligent efforts, I received a settlement that far surpassed my expectations. If I ever find myself in need again (fingers crossed I don't), he's the attorney I'd trust without a second thought.

Mr. Beatty is very knowledgeable, thorough and professional. He provided my family and I with very helpful guidance and walked us through the process step by step. He treated us like family and was always available for any questions and concerns that came up along the way. He made us feel heard and in control. Without hesitation, I recommend him for any accident involving injury.

I hired Betty for my family petition, while F2A was recent. PROs: She guided me at the beginning professionally and helped with the documentation set. She was always responsive to questions CONs: she filled my income in a wrong way (instead of 0$, she declared by foreign income from 1040) so the application was rejected 2 times. I had to guide her to correct the numbers with my understanding from the forums. While we had these rejections, the bulletin date has retrogressed and we lost our chance to get timely LPR status. She was not aware of retrogression as an immigration lawyer, until i informed her. She told me that we had our documents approved by NVC so retrogression would not affect us, which was also wrong as we did not even had the interview yet. I also had misleading suggestions from her that my family would be denied entry with B1/B2 visa while petition is pending. But they entered US without any problems. So in overall, i could do everything in a better way following up the discussions and forums myself, instead of spending money for a failed-delayed process.

Betty Huang is a terrific attorney. A friend referred me to her after my traumatizing first-attempt at applying for the O-1 visa. My old lawyer had utterly disappeared after her negligence with an RFE resulted in my petition being denied due to abandonment. Ms. Huang, in contrast, is all professionalism. She's also genial, communicative and warm. When I first reached out to her in distress, she made time for me immediately. She took steps to resolve my situation in the short term before we even discussed long-term representation. During this interim period, she treated me like any client and was patient with me. Betty is extremely well-informed about USCIS—not only with regards to its official rules and customary processing times, but also with its little 'annoyances' and flaws. Her knowledgeability was instrumental towards an expedient re-application, which we accomplished in only a month’s time. Best of all about Betty, though, is the respect she has for her clients. When Ms. Huang believed that I might have more information on a given topic than she, she deferred to me. As we assembled my petition, she respected my wishes while checking my naiveté. We worked in tandem on my case, to put together something that we both felt good about. The ultimate success of my O-1 petition was due in no small part to this symbiotic approach towards legal representation. In relaying this testimony to friends, family and colleagues, I have been reminded repeatedly that it is rare one should have so many good things to say about a lawyer. It is telling, then, that I mean every single one.

My disabled parent is currently working with this agency on my stepfather’s disability appeal. The senior paralegal B. Lopez has not returned any of our calls. My stepfather’s claim is about to be denied again since SSA has reached out requesting additional information that has not been provided. I’m sure the attorneys and paralegals are super swamped with work as this is an non for profit agency. I’ve worked in agencies like this before and have noticed the challenged workers have there. My frustration lies with the fact that this issue has a huge impact on the families they service, including the disabled who have little to no resources.

I unfortunately had hired this lawyer to represent me in court. I won’t recommend her as a lawyer because of her poor performance. She lives in some imaginary world where she believes she a good one. My employer is spousing me for employment-based Green Card. And Huiyue(Oliver) Qiu is the lawyer they hired. This lawyer is negligence. As a immigration lawyer. He forgot to fill the i140 after the perm's approval, and let it expire. While he still charged the fee and pretend to do the premium processing. PP should ensure us a result within 2 weeks. But he keeps saying there is no results for over 2 month. And refused to give us any approve he did submit the application. Can't reach out to him in person. Hardly reply the emails, never pick up the phone. Tbh, not sure if he is still alive or real.

Lawyer Qiu is professional, detail-oriented, and patient in handling my cases. I started working with him for my H1-B visa petition, and later obtained my permanent residency through his continuous professional legal assistance. He studied my cases in depth and gave me clear directions for gathering evidence or case-supporting materials. He prepared all the paperwork with details, accuracy, great logic and persuasiveness. He also followed up for my case with patience. I appreciate all his help and highly recommend him to whoever is seeking assistance for immigration cases.

I am writing to express my profound gratitude for the outstanding service provided by Dina Corigliano and her incredible team especially Tracy. From my personal experience and the feedback from those I've referred, Dina and her staff have consistently demonstrated an unparalleled commitment to their clients' needs. Dina is an immigration attorney who stops at nothing to ensure the best possible outcomes. Her in-depth knowledge of immigration law, combined with her relentless dedication, sets her apart from others in her field. She takes the time to understand each client's unique situation, providing tailored advice and support every step of the way. The staff at Dina's office are equally commendable, especially Tracy (Teresa). They are professional, responsive, and genuinely care about the clients they serve. Whether it’s answering questions promptly, assisting with paperwork, or providing moral support, they go above and beyond to make the process as smooth as possible. I cannot recommend Dina Corigliano and her team highly enough. Their exceptional service, expertise, and unwavering dedication have made a significant impact on my life and the lives of those I've referred. If you're in need of an immigration attorney who will truly fight for you, look no further than Dina Corigliano and her remarkable staff.

Was referred to by a friend. The assistant who booked my appointment was nice, however she put me on a 20 mins wait just to schedule the initial appointment. On the day of my appointment, it was cancelled 30 mins before the scheduled call and no reason was provided. My email inquiring the same was unanswered. I called them, the assistant said Dina would not work with me as I am working with another lawyer ! FYI, I wasn't neither did I mention to that in my emails to her ! Probably some cooked up reason to not take up the case ! The assistant said the attorney would call back once the misunderstanding is clarified. Obviously, never got a call back. Glad I did not go along with her !

I was recommended by a friend to meet with Dina Corigliano. She was wonderful in the meeting and made me very hopeful. Then after signing to process a visa with them and paying the first half, she stopped replying to emails and became really hard to reach. A few weeks after she said she was going to have a partner in the firm do my application instead. I thought that was okay because she spoke very highly of him. Then this person became unresponsive and passed my case to a third person, who turned out to be the worst lawyer I've met in my life. He took forever to do anything and still made me do most of the work myself. The reference letter samples he "wrote" for me were full of typos and unbelievable grammatical errors. English is not my first language but even I can write considerably better than what I got. I ended up being denied, wasting a year of my life believing in this guy, and losing my money. I later showed the application to a different immigration lawyer and they were outraged by how bad it was. So in summary, run away. Don't give your money to these people. They do not care and their services are just bad.

I was very pleased with the quick turnaround for obtaining a work visa through this firm. The assistant assigned to my case informed me of every step along the way and the attorney I worked with was always available to answer my questions. I must admit I did not give them a long time frame in which to get my visa (I was working with another firm prior to switching to Daryannani & Bland) but they exceeded my expectations and got my application filed and approved quickly. I would and have recommended Daryananni & Bland to my friends.

The only reason for the 4 stars is I had to originally reach out to them initially, but afterwards everything was perfect. In other words, if it's important to you, then it becomes of an importance to them. After 5 years of back and forth with my complex N-400 case, I finally decided to hire a specialize law firm to help me with my re-application. Like many New Yorkers and I who struggle to understand the legality of the immigration system, I highly recommend you consult an immigration lawyer even if it means paying a little extra to help you with your case done promptly. In the end, having a peace of mind is what matters. The lawyer assigned to me was Ms. Sae-Jung Lee and her paralegal Maria Cheng. Even in the midst of COVID-19, their prompt response to any questions I had was valuable to my case. Sae-Jung and I communicated through email and the google meet weeks before my interview to go over the details of my form. On the day of the interview, it was a breeze. Long story short, I was naturalized during the pandemic because of the help from Sae-Jung and Maria. The whole process took over a year span. Now to be clear folks, there are a couple of people that work under Bretz & Coven, so this opinion is for the two individuals mentioned above. I am writing this review because they deserve these good appraisals for their hard work.

Mr. Waxman is truly a national leader in the field of NIW and an expert in immigration law. I got referred to him based on the recommendation of my prior lawyer as I was told Mr. Waxman is the best one for employment based immigration applications. It is simply true. He knows the law inside and out. He is very academic and has written extensively. I interviewed with him last year and I was impressed by his skills, focus and attitude. He was very knowledgeable and answered all my questions (and I had a lot of questions). He optimistic but realistic with great sense of humor and wonderful spirits. He presented all the options to me and offered the best honest advice. He and his team especially Dr. Pasa helped me build a strong case for my application. They were always on my side. I was looking for a Preeminent Immigration lawyer and happy that I found Waxlaw team recommended by a friend who's case was successful with them. I can honestly say that this team is finest immigration lawyer. My case was really interesting in EB1 category and other lawyers didn’t know where to begin and how to support me. I sent my CV to Waxlaw first and I got their phone call right away. Attorney Nathan Waxman and Attorney Susu Durst reviewed my case and listened carefully to details of my case and explained to me the process I was about to go through. Later Attorney Bithi Mukhopoddhay joined me with every details of this case and they all showed me the right path. Specially, understanding about my case and write the petition. Our green card application by EB1, done very efficiently with their guidance. Attorney fees were reasonable and communication was prompt. If anyone need a strong and determined attorney, Waxlaw will be the best choice.

I found out about Atty. Shannon through my family members, and he specializes in immigration law. He helped my relatives successfully change their legal status, and he's very experienced in his field. He conducts himself professionally, and from my personal experience, his fees are reasonable and make sense. Unlike my previous lawyer, he genuinely cares about his clients and keeps them informed throughout the process. Thanks to his expertise, I smoothly went from obtaining a work permit to getting my permanent green card without any issues. Now I'm a US citizen and I'm very grateful to him; I highly recommend his services. I've already referred many people to him, and I continue to do so.

He didn’t do my husband’s immigration process the right way and now he has to wait 10 years to come back... He lied to us saying he was going to appeals and he asked me for a bunch of letters and he didn’t even appeal.... He just wanted his money. He knew it since the beginning and he lied to us... Last time I went to his office he didn’t even know what happened with my husband.... Shame on him....

What an Immigration Lawyer Can Do for You

An immigration lawyer specializes in helping individuals, families, and businesses navigate the complex immigration process. These lawyers provide legal guidance on various immigration matters, such as obtaining visas, gaining permanent residency (green cards), applying for citizenship, and defending clients in deportation or removal proceedings. Immigration lawyers also assist with employment-based immigration, asylum applications, and resolving issues related to visas or immigration status.

Whether you're trying to immigrate to the U.S., facing deportation, or sponsoring an employee or family member for a visa, an immigration lawyer can help you understand your legal options and navigate the often complicated legal system.

When Should I Hire an Immigration Lawyer?

Hiring an immigration lawyer is beneficial in many situations where you are dealing with U.S. immigration laws, whether for personal or business reasons. Common reasons to hire an immigration lawyer include:

  • Visa applications: If you need assistance applying for a visa, whether it's a work visa (H-1B), student visa (F-1), or tourist visa (B-1/B-2), a lawyer can help ensure the application is properly completed and submitted.
  • Green card applications: If you're seeking permanent residency, an immigration lawyer can guide you through the process, whether through family sponsorship, employment, or the Diversity Visa (lottery) program.
  • Deportation or removal defense: If you’re facing deportation or removal from the U.S., a lawyer can defend your case in immigration court and seek to prevent removal.
  • Asylum applications: If you’re seeking asylum due to persecution or fear of persecution in your home country, a lawyer can help you prepare a strong case and file for asylum.
  • Family reunification: If you're a U.S. citizen or permanent resident looking to bring family members to the U.S., a lawyer can assist with the family sponsorship process.
  • Citizenship and naturalization: If you're ready to apply for U.S. citizenship, a lawyer can help you navigate the naturalization process and ensure you meet all the requirements.
  • Business immigration: If you're an employer seeking to hire foreign workers, a lawyer can assist with employment-based visas, labor certification, and compliance with immigration regulations.
  • Special immigration categories: Immigration lawyers also handle complex cases, such as visas for victims of human trafficking (T visa), crime victims (U visa), or those seeking Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

Hiring an immigration lawyer early in the process can help you avoid delays, errors, and possible denials due to incomplete or incorrect applications.

What Does an Immigration Lawyer Do?

An immigration lawyer provides a wide range of services to help clients with their immigration needs, whether personal or business-related. Their tasks often include:

  • Assisting with visa applications: Helping clients fill out and submit visa applications, ensuring all documentation is complete and accurate.
  • Filing for green cards and permanent residency: Guiding clients through the process of applying for a green card, including family-based, employment-based, or other forms of residency.
  • Defending against deportation or removal: Representing clients in immigration court who are facing deportation and working to prevent removal from the U.S.
  • Preparing asylum cases: Assisting clients in applying for asylum based on fear of persecution in their home country due to race, religion, nationality, political opinion, or membership in a particular social group.
  • Handling citizenship applications: Helping lawful permanent residents apply for naturalization and ensuring they meet all the legal requirements for U.S. citizenship.
  • Employment-based immigration: Assisting employers with the process of sponsoring foreign workers for temporary or permanent visas, including H-1B, L-1, and EB-1 through EB-5 visas.
  • Representation in immigration interviews: Preparing clients for immigration interviews and attending interviews at U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) offices.
  • Appealing denied applications: If a visa, green card, or citizenship application is denied, a lawyer can file appeals or motions to reopen or reconsider the case.

How Are Immigration Lawyers Paid?

Immigration lawyers generally charge for their services based on the type of immigration case and the complexity of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Flat fee: Many immigration lawyers charge a flat fee for specific services, such as preparing a visa application, green card petition, or citizenship application. Flat fees help clients know upfront what the legal costs will be for a particular service.
  • Hourly rate: For more complex cases, such as deportation defense or appeals, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates vary depending on the lawyer's experience and the complexity of the case.
  • Retainer: For ongoing immigration matters, some clients may need to pay a retainer, which is an upfront payment billed against as the lawyer works on the case.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale: Some immigration lawyers or nonprofit organizations may offer free or low-cost services for clients with limited financial means, particularly in asylum or humanitarian cases.

It’s essential to discuss the fee structure with your lawyer during the initial consultation to understand the costs and payment arrangements.

How Much Does an Immigration Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring an immigration lawyer varies based on the type of legal service required, the lawyer's experience, and the complexity of the case. General cost estimates include:

  • Visa applications: For help with visa applications (e.g., H-1B, L-1, F-1), legal fees may range from $2,000 to $7,500, depending on the complexity and the type of visa.
  • Green card applications: Fees for family-based or employment-based green card applications typically range from $3,000 to $10,000, depending on the case.
  • Deportation defense: For defending clients in removal proceedings, costs can range from $5,000 to $15,000 or more, depending on the complexity of the case and how long the case takes.
  • Asylum cases: Asylum applications may range from $2,000 to $10,000, depending on whether the case is defensive (in removal proceedings) or affirmative (not in removal proceedings).
  • Citizenship applications: Legal fees for filing a naturalization application usually range from $1,500 to $5,000, depending on the complexity of the client’s immigration history.
  • Business immigration services: Fees for assisting businesses with employment-based visas (such as H-1B or EB-5 visas) often range from $3,000 to $10,000 or more.

Always ask for a clear breakdown of costs and fee arrangements before proceeding with legal services.

Top Questions to Ask an Immigration Lawyer

Before hiring an immigration lawyer, it's essential to ask questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Important questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with immigration cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling cases similar to yours, whether it’s family-based immigration, employment visas, or asylum.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a flat fee, hourly rate, or retainer, and ask for a detailed estimate of the total cost.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask for an honest assessment of your case and the potential outcomes, including any challenges you might face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Immigration cases can take time, so ask how long it may take to process your application or resolve your legal issue.
  5. Will you handle my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle parts of your case. Make sure you know who will be working on your case directly.
  6. What documents do I need to provide?
Ask the lawyer about the documentation required to support your case, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, or employment contracts.

How to Check the Credibility of an Immigration Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable immigration lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their state bar status: Confirm with your state bar association that the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no disciplinary actions against them.
  • Look for specific immigration law experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in immigration law and have experience handling cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients who can speak to their ability to handle immigration cases.
  • Check for industry affiliations: Membership in organizations like the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) can indicate the lawyer’s expertise and commitment to immigration law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with an immigration lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Passport and immigration documents: Bring your passport, visa, and any documents related to your current immigration status.
  • Family documents: If you're applying for a family-based visa or green card, bring marriage certificates, birth certificates, and proof of family relationships.
  • Employment information: For employment-based visas, provide your employment contract, offer letter, or other documentation of your job.
  • Criminal records (if applicable): If you have any criminal history, bring copies of court records and other relevant documents.
  • Timeline of events: Provide a clear timeline of any prior immigration applications, visas, or issues with immigration authorities.
  • List of questions: Prepare any questions you have about your immigration case, the process, costs, and the likelihood of success.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer understand your case more effectively and get the best possible legal advice on how to proceed.
