Contacted Mr. Callender for a free consultation concerning filing an elective share claim for a spouse. We never discussed the reason for the free consultation because he became fixated on the method used to obtain legal guardianship of the spouse. He was reminded that the legal guardianship was not the issue. He advised if his questions on the legal guardianship were not answered he would not represent me and then ended the conversation. Seek an attorney who will listen to your legal problem and provide recommendations. Also, avoid attorneys who advertise flat or fixed fees on their website then only quote hourly fees like Mr. Callender does.

Alan was hired on recommendation to handle the liquidation of my parent's trust following my mother's death. He was well aware of certain family dynamics although he couldn't have cared less. He was unprofessional, uncommunicative and beyond slow. He did not return phone calls and there were interminable waits before we could reach him to discuss serious issues. I could go on and on. But suffice it to say, I would never, never recommend him. I have dealt with many attorneys in my life, some good--some average, but this one is just indifferent to the point of bad. More often than not, he sluffed us off to paralegals. His bill was exceedingly high but there was zero value for money.

Susser withdrew as attorney of record for a legal malpractice case two weeks before the Statute of Limitations had expired. He had accepted the case 41/2 Months earlier when he was sent all pertinent information. His withdrawal based on his belief case “too tough to win.” Legal malpractice expert had previously endorsed my claim. Could have and should have withdrawn much earlier allowing me time to hire another lawyer.

Gary Susser has been a guardian angel to me. He took my case when no one else wanted it including big names on TV. They all said the same thing " its a big insurance company that you are up against". and "its too hard to prove" my case. I was in a car accident, and had to go up against my own insurance company in court! It was the day that I met this man that I started to have hope again. He took my case and it was as hard as everyone said it would be. Gary and his assistant, Yvonne guided me through this terrible ordeal and won my case! I will forever be in debt. Sincerely, Linda

Outstanding attorney. Hired her to handle a probate matter, and found her to be honest and trustworthy. Probate takes forever, and there are a thousand hoops to jump through, but Ilene made sure everything was done properly so at the end of the day the case got wrapped up with no problems. Her fees were more than reasonable. Would strongly recommend her for any probate case.

I retained Ms. Schnall to handle the probate of my father's estate. Once we were a bit into it, I found her to be petulant and the giver of poor advice. Even though I believe she is not worth what she charged, once involved with her it made more financial sense to take matters to their conclusion. I think. Perhaps not. Beware of getting into long, seemingly innocuous chats with her that she initiates. You are always being charged and my lasting impression was that she will attempt to generate that type of revenue for herself.

I find this firm. David Drill...is more a workers comp lawyer..he is there to work with wc NOT me as a client I was ignored blown off and stalled out so that he let the insurance company decide what settlement I was to receive..even tho I am in such shape It is impossible for me to return to wk when I was stalled off for so longI had no choice but to settle for the insulting settlement. And Mr Drill stalled me off for months before actually having me in to sign and now I'm being stalled off getting back after they take over 3 thousand for doing absolutely nothing and now refuses to return my calls and still after 3 weeks no ck saying post office to blame...they Do NOT care about wc client's but I guess it's a great scam $ 3500 for doing as Mr Drill said...nothing...and I am the one who is paying an accident at wk. I would never recommend this firm for anything

This lawyer is both unprofessional and incompetent. She did not believe it to be prudent to immediately inform one of her clients that his wife was also being charged in the same jurisdiction with a crime stemming from the same incident. There is simply no way that she was unaware of this charge for the entire time that she did not inform her client and her client should not be expected to discover this on her own. She has made it apparent to the public that her personal political beliefs are more important than providing the best representation to her clients. Avoid doing business with this woman at all costs.

Cohen & had to pay $200 upfront & had a 28 minute phone call with him & everything he claimed he could & would do, did nothing. I spent $200 for nothing. I began using Mr. Cohen after I was the Plaintiff in 2 separate lawsuits a few years apart and he represented the Defendants in each case. I was amazed at how he representd them and constantly had my hired attorneys on their heels trying to deal with his knowledge and presentations to the Judge. After the second time dealing with this I decided to hire him myself and he has been my business and personal attorney ever since. I am in a business field where I deal with occasional lawsuits as the Plaintiff and wanted to make sure I was represented as best possible. Aside from his knowledge and polished approach in the courtroom one of the attributes I like most is his ability to review the facts you give him about a case and seldom having to go "research it", or go "talk with co-counsel" like most attorneys tell you.... always ending up in increased consultation bills. Mr. Cohen's rates are not cheap but they are within industry standards from what I have found, and the best part is he is so knowledgeable he doesn't waste time needing to go "research" most issues when you speak with him based on his legal experiences. I have also found (based on my frequency working at the courthouse) that many other local attorneys use him whenever they need assistance, or need someone to mediate their cases. If you want someone who understands all aspects of 'contractual law' and 'real estate law', and want him/her to give you the best represenataiion possible, give him a call. On the other hand if you are looking for someone to stroke you and make you feel good about your case, no matter how bad it may be, you're probably better off using someone else. There are many of them out there....Dennis Warren, Current Real Estate Investor and Retired Captain, Internal Affairs, Orange County

5 years ago Kenneth Lancaster did estate planning for me and a probate when it was time, he came highly recommended by several church members and close friends of my fathers who have used him. He did the things that needed to be done to minimise the cost of death, burial, taxes and distribution, Kenneth eliminated any surprises that would have popped up before they became a surprise. I am now using him for another probate and distribution of estate property. In my opinion he is very very good at what he does. I think his down to earth demeanor puts one at ease during the process which is not a joyful one for most. I would recommend and have recommended him to my friends as he did take care of me on the first estate case, and is working on another for me at this time.

When my husband died tragically and unexpectedly, his children contested the will. I called the Clarkskatof firm to seek legal representation. They gave my case to Jordan Hammer. At first, Jordan seemed wonderful. He got us in for our first court appearance quickly. The ball seemed to be moving along and, he was easy to talk with. However, when my husband's children offered a settlement that included Jordan's firm acting as fiduciary, which would earn them firm six figures, everything changed. He and the senior partner began to pressure me into accepting the agreement. This was odd since they had been convinced that going to court was the right thing to do. Previously, when I had told Jordan that I didn't have the stomach for court he would give me a lecture about "Deserving vindication." I was hesitant to sign the agreement, given his previous, very passionate advice. I also wanted a couple of days to think on it. Jordan showed up at my house that evening. )(Yes, at my house.) My daughter was doing her homework in the dining room. I was crying in the kitchen. He strong armed me into signing the agreement. I regretted it immediately and called him within minutes, asking him not to file it and give me more time to read through it and think about it. He basically said "Too bad." I had another attorney call him and ask him to hold off on filing it. He got the same, "Too bad response." It was clear to me that Jordan's focus was on representing his firm rather than his client. I don't any doubt that Jordan was more interested into bringing the hefty fiduciary fee into this law firm than acting on my behalf. I have been very unhappy with the fiduciary service his firm was entrusted to perform. His children have indicated that they are not satisfied either. A house that was under construction and is a trust asset has been neglected. Even though I only own 25% of it, I finally hired someone to mow the lawn because the weeds were taking over and no one in Jordan's firm would act. It cost me $70. and took a single hour to find someone to mow the overgrown lot. This is just one example of many of how they have failed to look after trust assets. It genuinely seems that Jordan and the firm he works for, Clark Skatoff, put their own best interest over what is best for their clients.

In hiring an Attorney you will not always get the partner but an associate. In contacting Clark/Skatoff I was assigned Mr. Jordan Hammer as my attorney. Due to his neglect I loss everything I hired the firm to protect. As I cannot recover from my loss due to Mr. Hammers neglect of my case my hopes is to prevent others from suffering as I had. To begin Mr. Hammer does not answer you calls even if he is in the office. He does not return calls. His conduct is unprofessional. Mr. Hammer does not provide the client with information with regard to the case no matter how vital. I was not informed of a court hearing. In discussing the hearing Mr. Hammer was unaware of the documents provided to the court which was to be in three days. He informed me to sign and retracted advising me to wait until he reviews. He provided contradictory information and was not aware of all the particulars. He had this information for 4 months, plenty of time to review. On one occasion he provide the opposing Attorney information on the cut off date. Adding insult to injury Mr. Hammer lead me to believe we were in negotiations. I received notices from the opposing attorney stating otherwise. Mr. Hammer told me to send all information as he was not aware why negotiations were not proceeding. I finally learn that Mr. Hammer did not provide paper work in the allotted time frame which lapse due to Mr. Hammer's neglect. I lost the negotiations and would have to spend money to fight the incompetent work. I tried in vain to contact Jeffrey Skatoff and his only recourse was to defend his Attorney. It will cost me a great deal of money to correct these oversight if I can at all. As an attorney it is important to know the facts, relate to the client and provide all paper work in the time frame. He was negligent on all accounts. Mr. Skatoff did not take responsibility or assist in correcting the problem. He did not intervene or provide solution but blamed the client making me a victim a second time.

In October 2019 I was falsely accused of a crime that never occurred. In October 2021 I was falsely convicted of that “crime“ due to the abhorrent representation of Mark Alderuccio. This man sat on every piece of information I gave him. Every piece of exculpatory evidence, every defense strategy, and let every single lie told about me at the trial go unchallenged. The sheriff falsified the police report from top to bottom, vilifying me and impugning my character in every way imaginable, asserting that I confessed to this woman’s accusations. I wanted to have a jury trial, but Mr. Alderuccio was concerned that they may believe the lies that were being told about me. Instead… “You couldn’t have a better judge for a bench trial“ he said to me. Giving me example after example about just how fair minded this judge was, explaining how he’s worked with him since the 90’s — KNOWING full well that “burden of proof“ and “reasonable doubt” don’t even factor in at a bench trial, it all comes down to whoever the judge wants believe. In this case an immigrant from Honduras who “hardly speaks any English“ or a man who admitted to angrily yelling at her for disturbingly him. Who sounds more likable already? I didn’t know any better, I trusted him, I agreed. I couldn’t have known that I’d just hung myself. The sheriff perjured himself on the stand by repeating what he said in the report, that I had admitted to what I was being accused of. Instead of rebutting the sheriffs lie by submitting my 911 call incident detail report which states: 1. “Patrick Fitzgerald… Someone made a false police report about him and he wants to file a report about the report” Mr. Alderuccio Left me to spring it on the judge minutes before the end of the trial, at which point he cried out to the prosecution “Now how am I supposed to believe that?” I was told to return to my seat. I asked Mr. Alderuccio If he submitted that 911 detail report (proving that what I just said on the stand was the true) and he said excitedly “I didn’t have to because you just told him!” As though ANY judge would consider the word of an accused criminal over an official document. The most critical piece of information that needed to be communicated to that judge was the fact that I have denied that anything even happened from the beginning. Mark Alderuccio had proof of that and sat on it. Making matters worse, he made two incriminating motions to dismiss. Arguing that because the sheriff had to wake me, I couldn’t have been aware of a crime, so the case should be dismissed. His voice was cracking both times, he didn’t believe the words coming out of his mouth, and for good reason. Without challenging the judges believe that a crime had occurred, he was arguing in effect that I had committed the crime, forgot about after the fact, and that’s why the charges should be dismissed. Thanks to Mr. Alderuccio, the judge had no other option but to conclude that everything he already believed to be true, was indeed true and convicted me. I saw Mark Alderuccio a week later in his office to ask if there was still time to appeal, something he never even told me was an option. After defending the prosecution and judge as having gone into the trial with an open mind, I attempted to ask a question about the trial to which he angrily cut me off, exclaiming “You were convicted! you can’t second-guess every little thing after the fact!“ Every “little” thing. I have no doubt that man fully expected me to be carted off to jail that day to have nothing more to do with me as he has treated me with utter contempt ever since. These are just a scant few examples, the list goes on and on and on. How many other peoples lives has this man ruined, and how many more will he?

Mr. Black handled an estate case where I served as P.R. It lasted almost 12 years, because of multiple beneficiaries with their own attorneys, and many complexities. There are too few probate judges in Miami so all cases take a long time. Mr. Black is very knowledgeable about FL statutes and case law and was able to dismiss tens of thousands of charges from unscrupulous and incompetent creditors. His hourly rate is quite reasonable considering his skill level and I feel that he didn't bill for many hours that he spent. He has a good memory, a good demeanor, and professional appearance.

I am completely dissatisfied with his "representation" of my case. Upon our initial consultation he seemed willing to fight for me and I foolishly trusted him. He would tell me "dont worry I'll handle everything" after I delved a lot of personal information relevant to my case. He failed to represent me and fight for me. He was extremely hard to reach. Everytime I would call he would either be "in court" or it was a "bad time" and would promise he'd call me back at a more convenient time. There were tons of emails that I sent without so much as a response. He is a very unprofessional attorney who just shoved my file under desk paperwork. I had finally gotten so fed up that I fired him and was still presented with an invoice for services that were not rendered. SEEK ANOTHER ATTORNEY FOR REPRESENTATION! HE IS THE WORST!

Ms Wright is not a lawyer you want to have to go in front of a judge with. She falls apart. She lost the case because she was unprepared to present the case. She was missing documents that the judge asked for. She also failed to return my calls at the time leading up to the case. I spent more time talking to her assistant Betty than her. I hired Dara via Proskauer back when her name was Dara Factor, prior to marriage when it changed to Dara Howard. She is basically a decent and intelligence person, though incentivized by her firm to bill with extreme prejudice. A "the client is always wrong" attitude came to prevail and I did not feel represented, but instead felt that our objectives were never the same, so much so that we became in opposition: she and her firm wanted my money and so did I, and every dollar that I retained meant a dollar less for them. I fell into the "sunk cost fallacy" which is that having spent so much money on them I could not admit that the money was gone, that it was lost, and that I needed to accept that. I have put two stars above as a review because there is always hope and room for anyone to improve, but I must emphasize the relationship was not a good one.

Our family was deeply hurt and disappointed by this lawyer, who had created or modified three estate plans for us that seemed procedurally fine. Mom died after great pain, only weeks after being diagnosed with cancer. Two days later we called Crawford to tell her and ask estate-related questions, and left voicemail. She never called back or had anyone in her office respond. What she did, abruptly and without any alert or advance notice, was to send irreplaceable original documents via regular, untrackable mail, with a letter saying she had a conflict of interest and was withdrawing. The letter had no explanation and no suggestion for any help for us, and contained an incorrect and erroneous statement that the package was sent via certified mail. Except for that letter, we never heard a single word from her after Mom's death. We are not legal experts, and the Florida Bar told us that Crawford's behavior meets its standards. It does not meet our family's standards for common courtesy and adherence to the Golden Rule.

Just wanted to make sure everyone knew how cruel and heartless this all about the money this company is... just so you're aware you could have caused my daughter and I our lives. When everybody has come together to help out in a time of need, you decided to freeze my bank account, the absolute only money my 9 year old and I have access too the day we were told that we had to evacuate because of hurricane Irma. I contacted this heartless company and they did not care one bit. Long story short we were unable to leave our home as we were told to do because we are in zone A as we had NO money, no money to buy supplies, no money for gas, no money to leave or even drive to a shelter. I have been out of work now going on a week because there is no power at our office, and still can not leave our home. I am grateful that we lived trough this, but still have no access to my money for almost one month. How do you think I will be able to go out and purchase gas and food???? We have no other family here. Again.. your company is cruel and please take the little money I owe you and do as you please with it, I hope your conscience is clear.

I am from out of state and was in a hurry to close my mother's estate. I had a feeling that I was in the wrong place when I got to his office but I did not have time to find another lawyer. A simple probate case took them nearly 14 months and $8,000 to close. I should have known better. I will say that his legal aide was always polite and understood my frustrations. She gets 5 stars!

Mr Harrison and his staff are terrible about getting back to you. I felt that important issues were falling through the cracks because of his lack of responsiveness and followup. I feel like we overpaid for simple services-as we didn't come out of our foreclosure any better off than if we would have had no lawyer at all. I often had difficulty understanding Mr Harrison too because he stutters. I feel very frustrated with this law firm most of the time.

I was referred to him and hired him to represent me in a chapter 13 bankruptcy case. His performance, follow through and legal guidance was mediocre. He missed two major events that he could and should have anticipated that cost me tens of thousands of dollars. I fired him and had to hire and pay for another attorney to complete my chapter 13 filing. He just was not apologetic and just seemed to be relieved that he no longer was obligated to complete his representation. I would advise not using him under any circumstance.

After weeks of going nowhere, Mr. David R. Singha finally mailed needed paperwork for me to sign, notarize, and mail back to a P.O. Box (March 9, 2016). His words "Once he receives paperwork he will send me my check." I haven't heard anything from him since letting me know he received my paperwork, nor have I received my check. Mr. David R. Singha Probate Attorney knows the laws of the state of Florida. He was hired back in June/July of 2015, and should've anticipated Medicare process. Now I'm waiting, again, for any scrap of information, as to: Where is my money? Why don't I have my money yet? What is taking so to get long to get my money? Who has my money? How come my money is not in my hands? Mr. David R. Singha I want closure, I want my money.

I am sick, Mr. Singha knows this but he continues to manipulate my wait time for disbursement of an awardment. Instead of relaying my check has come and he's sending paper for me to notarize and send back, then promptly sending check, Mr. Singha continues still to leave me in a state of confusion and frustration by continuing to keep my awardment with no known just cause. I would not recommend Mr. Singha to anyone.

Mr.Boles was the trustee of my deceased mother's estate. He failed to communicate with me and my sister and chose only to communicate with my(estranged) brother to the financial detriment of me and my sister. He was paid approximately $25,000 and did not do his job. I recommend that you don't hire him.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
