Good service - they take time to understand the details and workings of your idea. Professional writing above what an individual can likely produce on his/her own. But wildly expensive - would absolutely NOT recommend trying to get a patent (or even a Provisional Patent) when you're young. They quote you one amount and the overall price ends up being about twice what they estimate. If you're older and more established and actually have money, I recommend using this service

I was recommended to him by another firm, which he immediately criticized. He looked at my injury and saw the damage , and said he had a knowledgeable Dr. that could help us through the process.I went to his Dr. who wanted to treat me but did not want to testify against another Dr..At the time of my deposition he sent a fellow attny who was not at all familiar with my case. At one point Joe told me the Dr who injured me seemed like a nice guy, who was just trying to help me. But he would go to court if I would like but felt accepting an offer out of court before trial would be a better option. I was young and trusted him,. I received a paltry sum for my injury ,and have gone through life in constant pain. Always regretting I trusted him as I felt he was just out to make the quickest amount possible with the least amount of effort.

How do I report my former lawyer to the Bar? He already has been Centured.... probably looked at that as a merit badge. I am a true victum of medical mal., I was obviously unknowingly practiced on for dollars. Have all the backup to all claims. Back to, I was scared to death of "my"s attorney for good reason, he lied about his background, laughed when I cried, and I am so not a cryer. I was having, still have symtoms of stroke, anyersyms, granulomas, that is what is finally being admitted to by the FDA, blinding and stroke. I saved my entire life for the rainy day, spent some, saved some, their isn't a surgeon on the planet who can fix. Not a Specialist with a magic bullet pill. Brain damaged, disfigured, close to toothless (infection); chronic facial nerve pain. The surgeon who did this to me, well, the drug co. made him a Trainer "after" of course, 1/2 million a year plus. The judge asked me, did you5 lawyer explain what you are signing, (my rights away for basically medical bills, but in court "my" lawyer, he would have been clueless) I was so afraid of this gorilla type, I said yes to the Judge. There Isn't a second I am not in pain, disfigured, constant inflammation, infections. I lost my good life, my savings, my ability to take care of myself. Any suggestions. Aside from jump. Sort of like stepping out on the curb and not seeing the bus coming but the trauma is repeated every second or every waking moment.

I contacted Joseph J. Brophy in hopes of pursuing a psychiatric medical malpractice case. He told me immediately on answering the phone that he isn't currently taking clients, but despite this *still* offered to speak with me about my case so that he might offer feedback concerning my odds in court, other potential attorneys, etc. Mr. Brophy –– or "Joe," an address of familiarity and a complete lack of pretension –– proceeded to talk me through the specifics of my case for nearly twenty minutes, conveying both immense sympathy for my experience while also being very blunt about the difficulties I would face in proving lasting damages. He provided a very accessible outline of the way contingency cases work in the area of medical malpractice, and explained the limited types of psychiatric case likely to be taken on by a reputable attorney. He ultimately said he would not refer me to anyone, as he believed the case would prove too difficult, but was very humble in saying that he might be wrong, and encouraged me to keep looking if I feel I can, or must, meet the bar for a compelling case. I finished the call with the knowledge that I likely do not have a case –– and yet I *still* felt compelled to look up a forum online where I could sing his praises. Mr. Brophy is an extremely kind, empathetic, and *smart* attorney who seems genuinely invested in helping others, to the point of providing unpaid educative labor to a rather clueless caller. Even given my disappointment with his conclusions, he still somehow left me feeling empowered by my new (albeit limited) understanding of this area of law. If Mr. Brophy is this generous with individuals he knows he *won't* be representing, I can only imagine what it must be like to have him as one's attorney. 17 stars.

Please note that they hid the review I wrote for them on their business page on Google, so I will post this review wherever I can. Kaplan was dozing off during a meeting with my relatives. Very unprofessional. As of writing this on 5/28/2023, Kaplan persistently contacted my relatives through calls and emails, urging them to remove this supposedly "defamatory" review or they will "take action". Regrettably, this LLP seems unaware that their actions violate the provisions of the Consumer Review Freedom Act. I am determined not to retract this review as it is essential for people to be aware of the potential risks when engaging in business with this attorney. "The Consumer Review Fairness Act makes it illegal for companies to include standardized provisions that threaten or penalize people for posting honest reviews." (https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/resources/consumer-review-fairness-act-what-businesses-need-know). "In effect since 2017, the CRFA bans provisions in form contracts that restrict a consumer’s ability to communicate reviews or performance assessments about a seller’s goods, services, or conduct. The law also makes it illegal to impose a penalty or fee against a consumer who engages in communications protected by the CRFA." (https://www.ftc.gov/business-guidance/blog/2019/06/consumer-gag-clauses-totally-not-awesome-under-crfa). I am merely exercising the right to post honest reviews on behalf of my relatives.

Just briefly, I had big issues with my Federal tax return from when I worked as an expat and my UK accountants made an error and I didn't get the foreign tax credits I was due. The process took over a year to settle and there were many times that it looked hopeless, but Jim Kaplan and Sal Candela, Jim's associate that took on my case, never gave up and we just settled with the IRS, which was a very unlikely outcome. The rates were in my opinion, very reasonable and the work outstanding. Here's the note I sent back to Jim Kaplan, if it helps: "Hi Mr. Kaplan, Indeed the process was long and frustrating, but Sal Candela was a star. He went above and beyond at every turn, even when earlier this year, it appeared very unlikely there would be any upside to this IRS appeal. He's got a very difficult job, but he never lost his composure and quite frankly, had to keep me calm through most of the process. Sal kept pushing to move forward, even when over the summer I told him that I was done and I wanted to give up and just move on. Thank you for providing me such stellar, steadfast support and guidance through the unending maze of process, paperwork and procedure, that is the United States IRS."

I rarely write reviews for anyone or anything online, but I was so bothered by the disappointing free consultation I had with Ms. Shay that I was moved to do so. I began our conversation by providing some context, but I was rather coldly cut off and told to "skip the backstory" and state the problem and questions I had. In response, I then began to explain the problems I was having, but she again cut me off mid-stream, provided her recommendation as though she'd heard all I had to say, chided me for not asking questions, and reminded me she that she has been practicing for 30 years. Additionally, I'd made a couple references to the "ORA" during our conversation (the Office of Rent Administration, which is within the Division of Housing and Community Renewal). At the end of the call, one final reference to it resulted in her saying (paraphrasing), "you keep saying ORA I don't even know what that is." When I explained the acronym, she shot back (paraphrasing), "nobody knows what that is, if you said ORA nobody would know what you're talking about." I was stunned, frankly, by her impatient tone and for being admonished for my familiarity with a component of the DHCR which she evidently did not know existed. Finally, she ended the conversation with what I interpreted to be a sarcastic "good luck" that was--shall we say--less than decorous. I stipulate to the fact that it was a free, 15-minute consultation. I can understand her desire to cut to the chase. I also know we are all human and at times we all can be impatient and unfriendly--things happen. Perhaps I caught her on a bad day. But by not wanting to hear any backstory nor having the patience to listen to my problems themselves in full, how can she (or anyone) reliably advise on recommended next steps? Moreover, how can I (or any prospective client) know exactly what questions to ask when we are not subject matter experts? While she very well may be competent and a good fit for others, the combination of unfortunate components to our conversation listed above left me feeling like I was at the hospital being attended to by a doctor with little to no bedside manner. Someone contacting an attorney is (not always but) often in a bind, unsure of what to do, feeling vulnerable, and in need of help. I do not know her personally, so all I can do is make a judgment based on my 15-minute interaction with her. That judgment was disappointingly negative. To sum up my experience succinctly, I found Ms. Shay to be unfriendly, impatient, and lacking in knowledge and calibrated emotional intelligence despite her 30 years practicing. As such, I would not recommend her.

Eric came recommended and represented us on a home purchase under unusual circumstances. We had an accepted offer on a home in E Northport, NY back in February 2020. Then the COVID-19 pandemic hit full force. Eric worked with us and the sellers' attorney to get us closed in April with proper 'social distancing' guidelines in place after some delays. The end result was a successful transaction. I'd say that's an ABC situation.

Eric represented my family when it came time to sell my parents’ longtime home on the north shore of Long Island. He apprised me of all the issues, advised me what the ramifications would be of certain of these issues, e.g. obtaining retroactive certificates of occupancy which we lacked, power of attorney issues, and various other points large and small. But the coup de grace was when, literally the very night before the closing, my elderly father took ill and was hospitalized. Eric came into NYC and went to my father’s hospital room to get power of attorney at our request so the closing could proceed the next day as planned. Thankfully my father’s OK. We would hire Eric again in a second. If you’re involved in a real estate transaction and you don’t hire Eric, you’re crazy! :-)

These people are some of the world’s best. They helped me every step of the way start and grow my advertising and communications business into a global powerhouse. Their advice, their practical advice, their genuine concern for our firm and its principals, their knowledge of the industry and our clients proved invaluable at every stage. And they continued to provide invaluable services when we sold our company and to its new owners. They are doing the same for the firm I work for now. Work with them. You won’t be disappointed. I’d bet you’d be as delighted as I was. They get it. As their website says, “legal mastery is essential but insufficient. Even the best lawyering must work in tandem with business realities.” They demonstrate genuine care for you, your goals and success. Most lawyers I’ve worked see all the problems, they will help you find the path thru them!!

I hired Jonathan Trotto because he gave me false confidence. My case should’ve been an easy win considering all the evidence and everything we had against my ex. At first, he acted like this would be a slam dunk win and I would get everything and more that I was seeking. After the first hearing, I lost all hope in him. He practically laid down and let my exes attorney run the court. He never was aggressive or assertive about anything in the courtroom. He was pushing for me to settle every meeting afterwards. It felt as though, by the end of it all, he was brokering deals behind my back. I ended up exactly where I started. I wouldn’t recommend this firm to anyone in a million years.

I hired them to represent me in a personal injury case, but instead of acting in my best interest, they only seemed to care about their own agenda. The lawyer assigned to my case was rude, incompetent, and lacked any sort of empathy for my situation. He failed to communicate with me in a timely manner, ignored my concerns, and repeatedly missed important deadlines. Despite my numerous attempts to get answers and receive proper representation, the firm failed to deliver. To make matters worse, their billing practices were outrageous and seemingly designed to fleece their clients of as much money as possible. They billed for every single phone call, email, and minute of work, even if it had no bearing on my case. The bills I received were inflated and did not seem to reflect the actual work being done. In addition, the firm was unprofessional in their communication with other parties involved in my case, often causing unnecessary delays and further frustration for me as a client. The firm was also unresponsive to my requests for documentation, such as itemized bills and court filings, making it impossible for me to understand the progress of my case. I would strongly advise anyone considering Finer & Fanelli to choose a different firm. They lack any sort of ethical standards, take advantage of their clients, and do not provide the level of representation that one would expect from a law firm. I am in the process of filing a complaint with the state bar association and hope to prevent others from having to endure the same experience that I did.

I normally do this work myself but didn't have time. The paperwork sent to NY by Frank Zappala was rejected by Clinton County. Upon my review, it was in fact done incorrectly. I redid it myself, and it went through with flying colors as always. I cordially offered the information to Frank Zappala hoping it would assist both him and his clients in their future endeavors. I did not request even a partial refund. This guy has the arrogance to bill me for research that further confirms his errors. You think about that.

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
