She new the facts going into the situation and said it shouldn't be a problem. She strung us along for months and then said it would cost $5000 to continue and we may not win. If she is such a great attorney why did she not tell us that going in. I would not have wasted my time or money. She now sent us a final bill for $500 with no details. Don't use her.

Absolutely recommend Ms. Sarah Duncan to those who need an attorney to help parents and families put in place all appropriate documents. She is caring, a whip smart and savvy attorney, and is very pleasant to work with and she inspires a great deal of confidence. She is the 6th attorney I've dealt with regarding family / elder estates. Some were better than others. Sarah tops them all.

My mother and I needed assistance with some power of attorney materials and updating her will. She was starting to have some difficulties and he was very impatient. For my issues, which involved creating a will, he treated me like a nobody and I was making the issues too complicated. He was never patient or listening. He got paid and was irritated when the work stopped.

Krista was able to answer all questions knowledgeably and intelligently about setting up the wills for my Mom and Dad. She also was willing to meet with us at our convenience, even coming down to where Mom and Dad live in assisted living in order to get things squared away easily. She is very easy to work with and we are very confident in her work. Her work and attitude is very professional, and she is also very accessible and explains things well to laymen like us. We will continue to use her for our legal needs.

AMAZING attorney and law firm! I cannot say enough great things about Mike! He is knowledgeable, understanding, thorough, caring, and will fight for you. Mike’s willingness to not only listen, but care about you and your case during the most stressful times speaks volumes. I have never felt rushed speaking to him. Mike and his paralegal, Sam, are quick to respond and they will fight for you! They give it to you straight and provide you with options, so you don’t feel “stuck”. You can tell DeWitt Law apart from the rest because you do not feel like just another client or that they are there to just take your money like other firms do. They make you feel like family, which doesn’t exist anymore. Sam (paralegal) listens, truly cares, and works hard for you. Mike’s knowledge in family law has no limits. If you want to feel like you matter, be heard, and taken care of by a knowledgeable firm, RUN TO DEWITT LAW! You won’t regret it.

My spousal support modification case was complicated but Michael understood the details thoroughly and prepared documents which were tailored to my specific needs. The paralegal was courteous and prompt in her responses which helped to alleviate my stress in this emotional process. I highly recommend DeWitt Law PLLC for anyone seeking family law services.

Wish I could give even less. This man does not give a single care about his court appointed cases. He didn’t even care enough to show in person stating that he could “do other things” while his client was waiting. He didn’t bother to set up a way to communicate with his client in the court room and made a sorry excuse about how “complicated it is to set it up because he has to use a certain software” like my guy it’s called being prepared to do your job. He provided the worst “cross examination” I’ve ever witnessed. He struggled to find the word adversarial whilst chuckling during “cross examination” and had little to no questions for the defendant while he lied several times under oath. Lastly, he assured his client they wouldn’t have to testify and then strong armed her into spilling details of an open investigation which now compromises the immediate safety of a minor. I’m disgusted and horrified that man is allowed to practice law. Absolutely shameful.

My husband and I hired David to draft our estate plan soon after we moved to Washington in the spring of 2020. He answered all of our questions, responded to all emails promptly the entire process was quite easy. This happened during Covid shut down and he made arrangements for us to sign our documents from our car so that it was safe. His rates are very reasonable, he charges by the hour rather than a flat fee. That was nice because our case was pretty straight forward and simple, I suspect a flat fee would not have worked out in our favor. Its fair to both the client and the attorney when it's billed by the hour. About a year and half after we drafted our estate plan we decided to make a change to our will. David was super prompt in handling that change for us. We did this right before the holidays and I expected it would be drawn out process. Instead he got it turned around in a couple of days. It was great.

Mr. Haroldson responded to a posted question of mine regarding a family law case Im currently involved in. His answer was genuinely thoughtful and empathetic to my situation, providing me with a solid understanding of what I could anticipate when going in front of a judge. I appreciated his reply so much that I sought out a 30min consultation with Mr. Haroldson in order to discuss more specific details regarding the best way for me to proceed in this situation. The consultation was at no cost to me which I was deeply grateful for him providing to me. During our conversation, he was upfront, honest and forward about his true thoughts with what I was going through and gave me the best he was able to within this appointment. Not only that, but he was also very generous to me in regards to his offered available services. If I decide to hire an attorney in this matter, hands down, I would contact Mr. Haroldson right away without hesitation. I feel completely confident that he would provide me with exceptional service and legal assistance. I am deeply grateful and appreciative of his time and the advice I received that day. Mr. Haroldson was courteous and professional even when the court-appointed attorneys were not. He gave me great legal advice and stopped the litigation from snowballing out of control in my father's guardianship case. I should have easily won my petition to modify support for my kids but I don't think Marie took it seriously. I came with good reason to modify and the judge decided in my deadbeat exes favor in my opinion with minimal change to the support order, support for my kids extra costs and a decision to make him pay for their college and activites. Would not use again.

I had hired Ms. Caulkins in 2009 she seemed great at first meeting , but once paid the retainer fee everything had changed , I could never reach her to get details on my case and she over charged me for just simple emails or phone calls which added up to me paying thousands of dollars more than I should have. my case never went to trial due to Ms. Caulkins lack of commitment to my case instead she just sat back and kept charging me but I ended up receiving nothing in the end only a huge bill that I could not afford. if you are smart and are looking for a good lawyer trust me save your time and money go some where else.

When I first meet with Caulkins she seemed like she was a go getter and very organized. The first time we went to court she was amazing. Then it changed. She waited until the night before our documents for court were due to have me review them. When we went to court she was completely unprepared, she had this little file folder with papers just jumbled and shoved in it. She dropped it and everything fell out, she just shoved them back in not even caring what they were. His attorney completely slammed me with false allegations, she said nothing. I had told her before my ex threatened to kidnap my kids and she completely disregarded this when he has the means to do it. I was so appalled I didn't know what to do. She put my kids endanger and me in financial ruins.

Absolute worst possible experience with this law firm. They sent a different lawyer to our court date and didn't tell us until he showed up. He had no knowledge on our case. Billing was ridiculous. Due to screwing our case up entirely, Todd himself told us there would be no cost for him to fix his mess up. Not only did the other side get what they wanted.. They were COMPLETELY in the wrong.. With complete confidence before our court date that we would win, the other attorney Daniel that works for him, was awful in court. He didn't use all the evidence that was given to him.. He managed to leave out the most important details.. I have literally met with the attorney twice! I hired him 8 months ago. We have to go through the paralegal for everything. The whole firm fails to take us serious. Telling us it would be a bad idea to go back to court, unless we paid another full retainer... In that case they could get the judge to take us serious, and be on our side. I am now moving on to a new attorney, and will NEVER even consider sending someone to buskirk and associates.

We hired Daniel Rogers to represent us in a property line dispute. The duration of our contact was 4 months. I give Dan the highest recommendation as he guided us through the laws that impacted our situation which turned in to an adverse possession of what was originally our property. but now legally was our neighbor's. What I appreciated most was his ability to listen to and understand my concerns and feelings; then with sensitivity he explained the law, talked about our options, and interfaced with the other party's attorney. When I questioned his ideas he worked diligently to answer all of our questions. Even though the final outcome was not what I hoped for, in hindsight it was the best solution. Dan was so patient with us and he was right in his advice. We were not the easiest clients to handle, but Dan navigated our case very well. Because of Dan we have a deeper understanding of the law. Without hesitation we will employ Dan again if we need legal counsel.

I initially worked with Dan over a year ago regarding a dispute with a previous employer with which I needed some guidance. Dan was professional, honest, and extremely responsive in helping me resolve this matter. He had a clear legal understanding of the issues at hand, was very fair in how he billed his time for me, and always replied to my phone calls and emails within 24 hours. Additionally, Dan was incredible about proactively reaching out to me to keep me informed every time something happened, whether or not it required action on my part. I was so happy with my experience that when I needed a lawyer to review a contract for a business opportunity that emerged, Dan was the first call I made. While my first experience was good, my second experience was even more impressive. The contract negotiations for this opportunity came right up against a deadline and Dan went above and beyond to make sure that everything was completed on time (I believe he even worked over the weekend to accomplish everything). My experiences with Dan have been so good that I have not hesitated to refer him to my family, friends, and clients. If you are ever in need of an honest, trustworthy, and knowledgeable attorney, Dan is your guy. I look forward to doing more business with him as needed in the future.

For nearly a year Dan Rogers was working my wrongful termination case. In that time frame he acquired absolutely no useful or beneficial discovery from the opposition while diligently meeting their every demand. His inexperience and naive nature allowed him to bullied and swayed by both opposing counsel and his own management to the detriment of his client and case. Often during our tenure working together Dan Rogers would contact me detailing a discovery he had made in the case. Each and every one of these discoveries was something that I had already explained to him months prior. Usually more than once. Ultimately I was told that my input and opinion were not needed in my own case because I was not an attorney and therefore could not understand the process. After alienating most of the witnesses and getting one terminated my case had been damaged almost beyond repair. I warned Dan Rogers about the negative possibility of each one of these aspects and was ignored at every turn. He proceeded against my advice and the result was predictable.

If you read this review and still hire Daniel Pizarro you can't say you weren't warned. I worked directly with attorney Pizarro as he was assigned to work my case by his employer Thomas Dickson. Perhaps the individuals that gave him 5 star ratings did so on false pretenses. I found Mr. Pizarro completely inexperience and lacking legal gravitas. I was forced to spend a great deal of time on the phone with Pizarro and sent dozens of emails to him to get him up to speed. This was a complete duplication of effort as I had already done the exact same thing with Pizarro’s boss – Thomas Dickson. Not only was this an extremely frustrating experience – I felt like I was paying for Pizarro’s continuing education. Having being a licensed realtor, real estate investor and rental property owner for ~35 years I felt Pizarro didn’t know much about real estate. Mr. Pizarro was working for the law firm Dickson/Frohlich when I was involved with him. Thomas L Dickson and his partner Daniel J Frohlich are both rated on AVVO as 1 star attorneys. Their reviews by others all indicate that they overcharge their clients, lack professionalism, and fail to communicate with their clients. I agree. Don’t take my word on it. Just type in their names and see for yourself. Same on Yelp and other attorney review web-sites. Unfortunately, as a senior citizen, I was not aware of these rating web sites before I hired Dickson/Frohlich law firm. I agreed to hire Dickson as he talks a great talk when I was interviewing attorneys to hire for my case. He claimed that he had more than ~30 years of experience. To me – experience equates into efficiency. And efficiency equates into value and cost savings. I had no idea that Dickson was going to turn over my case to Mr. Pizarro. What I learned from this experience is Dickson/Frohlich hires inexperienced new attorneys, i.e., Pizarro, and uses them to do case management. However, because these junior attorneys have little or no experience they have to consult with Dickson/Frohlich about every little aspect of your case. Both Pizarro and Dickson’s names appeared on the on the documents that were prepared for my case. The end result in my situation - I ended up paying for 2 attorneys. I received a bill for more than $4K for 5 pages, (double spaced, huge top and bottom page margins), for a simple standard summons and complaint for breach of contact. (1.5 pages for the summons, and 3.5 pages for the complaint). What a joke. These are cut and paste documents that should have taken a paralegal 15 minutes to prepare. Being shell shock after seeing my bill – I called other attorneys to determine if this was a reasonable price for a simple summons and complaint. The consensuses was – no is was not a reasonable price. From the 4 attorneys that I talked to I found that the average price for this work should have been around ~$2,500. Not more than $4,000.00. I fired Pizarro and hired one of those attorney’s. I can tell you my new attorney not only consulted with me to get the case going but consulted with apposing attorney, prepared and filed court documents, appeared at a hearing, argued and won the hearing, prepared and filed more documents, and debriefed me – all for less than $4K. If you want to pay double to get little or nothing – Pizarro is your guy.

We worked with Derek to set up a living family trust and found him to be an affable, knowledgable and very patient attorney. He explained various tax state and federal laws in a simple enough way for us to understand what the trust structure would be. He was able to set up a trust in such a way to protect our family from high state and federal taxes esp. around inheritance and estate taxes. Would strongly recommend him for tax and estate planning. He does appear to be quite busy, so it helps if you contact his PA/staff occasionally to make sure the planning meetings are arranged as discussed. But that was not a major hassle, given how nice our experience was with Derek.

My wife and I met with Derek for initial consolation for estate planning. The meeting was great and it seemed clear that Derek knows his stuff. We left that meeting with a plan that Derek would provide a quote and a timeline for the work that needed to be done. Unfortunately, that was the last productive contact that we had. It's been about 6 weeks since that meeting, and despite multiple requests, we have not received a quote or an estimate of when we would get one... Not sure what's going on.. Dereks Admin is Rosalie. She is nice, but keeps giving me non-commital run-around. I said that if Derek just does not want to do this work, just let us know, but all we get is "I'll check with Derek and get back to you" ?? Strange..... We are really disappointed because we have been searching for an estate lawyer that we felt good about... Thought we had found one.

My mother used Foster Law for her will. Unfortunately, she never went in to have it signed. She is now in assisted living and not only wants to sign it, but make some updates. I contacted Foster before coming into town (I live in SoCal), and was told they would squeeze us in on a Tuesday or Friday. When I got into town, I was then told the next available meeting was 3 weeks out. I explained that wouldn't work - could we do something with a mobile notary, any solutions that didn't require a trip into the office, etc. I was offered a day two days earlier than the first, which again, would definitely not work. I told them I'd pursue other solutions on my own. I was then left a passive aggressive voice mail from Dorothy Foster chiding me for my obvious lack of understanding of WA law. Do yourself a favor - use legal zoom, line up 2 witnesses and a notary and save yourself the frustration of using an attorney who has zero empathy and zero customer service. Do not support these folks.

You can not trust these people they lie and we all know lawyers are liar's and they don't care about anything about the family of the deceased and I am so tired and watching my sister loose her mind over this. I hope you have a blessed day and I love you and how hard you worked for the money you got put of it. I hope that you and your family and friends never use you cause you are not for the families and it's all what you are going to get. I hope you have a good day and a and yourget to feel God's wrath for all the lies..

I trusted Mr. Hawkes. But since he received my payment, he's been uncooperative and even won't share a copy of my estate documents with me. His assistant keeps saying they either don't have them or they need time to find them. When I finally got him on the phone, to my surprise he started yelling at me. Such an attitude is disgraceful. I have since found another attorney and made sure to write "have revoked all previous estate documents" in my new papers so that Mr. Hawkes can't cause trouble for my estate -- and so I won't have to beg for my papers ever again from him and his assistant. Shame on them.

For a review of all my research and a phone call to his former co-worker at the very utility company causing me damage, at over a thousand dollars charge I was disgusted. Total milquetoast and questionable ethics. Complete waste of money. Did not feel he would or could represent me. I could do better on my own.

After some financial struggles I had 4 charge offs and 4 collections. I have two cards still that are in good standing and each had two 30 days lates that are 3 years old. My credit score was TransUnion 585, Equifax 583 and Experian 528. I have been facing depression due to my poor credit score. Luckily for me a friend introduced me to PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST who helped me raise my credit score to TransUnion 805, Equifax 809 and Experian 811. Also removed all charge offs, collection and eviction from my credit report. I now have a clean credit report with an Exceptional credit score. He’s the real deal. All thanks to PINNACLE CREDIT SPECIALIST. Hit him up by email:

What a Probate Lawyer Can Do for You

A probate lawyer assists with the legal process of administering a deceased person’s estate. This often involves guiding executors (if a will exists) or beneficiaries (if no will exists) through the probate process to settle the estate according to the deceased’s wishes or applicable laws. Probate lawyers can help validate the will, distribute assets, resolve disputes among heirs, handle outstanding debts or taxes, and ensure the estate is legally and efficiently administered.

Whether you’re an executor of an estate or an heir facing probate proceedings, a probate lawyer can help you navigate the often-complex legal process to ensure the estate is settled correctly.

When Should I Hire a Probate Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a probate lawyer when you are responsible for managing the estate of a deceased individual, especially in the following situations:

  • The estate has substantial assets: If the estate includes significant assets like real estate, investments, or business interests, legal assistance is often necessary to handle the distribution properly.
  • The will is being contested: If there are disputes among heirs regarding the validity of the will or the division of assets, a probate lawyer can help resolve the conflict.
  • The estate includes complex or unclear provisions: If the will contains complicated instructions or there are no clear beneficiaries, a lawyer can ensure that the estate is administered according to legal requirements.
  • There is no will (intestate estate): When a person dies without a will, the estate is subject to intestacy laws, which determine how assets are distributed. A probate lawyer can help navigate this process.
  • Debt or tax issues exist: If the estate owes significant debts or is subject to estate taxes, a probate lawyer can help ensure debts are paid appropriately and taxes are minimized.
  • Probate disputes: If family members or other parties are disputing the distribution of assets or challenging the executor's actions, legal representation is crucial to defending your rights and ensuring the estate is handled properly.

Hiring a probate lawyer early in the process can help avoid costly mistakes and ensure the estate is settled efficiently.

What Does a Probate Lawyer Do?

A probate lawyer provides a wide range of legal services to help manage and settle an estate. Their tasks can include:

  • Validating the will: Filing the will with the probate court and ensuring its legal validity.
  • Guiding executors or administrators: Advising the person responsible for managing the estate on their duties, including inventorying assets, notifying creditors, and paying debts.
  • Filing necessary paperwork: Preparing and submitting the legal documents required to initiate and complete the probate process.
  • Resolving disputes: Mediating or litigating disputes among heirs or between beneficiaries and executors, including challenges to the will or disagreements over asset distribution.
  • Handling debt and tax matters: Ensuring that outstanding debts, taxes, and estate taxes are properly calculated and paid from the estate’s assets.
  • Distributing assets: Ensuring that assets are distributed to the beneficiaries according to the will or intestacy laws, and that all legal requirements are fulfilled.
  • Closing the estate: Completing the final steps of the probate process, including filing a final accounting with the court and formally closing the estate.

How Are Probate Lawyers Paid?

Probate lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the estate and the nature of the legal work involved. Common payment structures include:

  • Hourly rate: Most probate lawyers charge by the hour, with rates depending on the lawyer’s experience and the complexity of the estate. Hourly rates can range from $150 to $500 or more.
  • Flat fee: For simple estates or straightforward probate tasks, some lawyers may charge a flat fee that covers all of the necessary legal work.
  • Percentage of the estate: In some states, probate lawyers are allowed to charge a percentage of the estate's value as their fee. This percentage typically ranges from 2% to 5%, depending on the size of the estate and state regulations.
  • Retainer fee: Some lawyers may require an upfront retainer fee, which is billed against as the probate process progresses.

It’s important to clarify the fee structure during your initial consultation to understand how you will be charged and avoid unexpected costs.

How Much Does a Probate Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a probate lawyer depends on several factors, including the complexity of the estate, the type of legal issues involved, and the lawyer’s fee structure. General cost estimates include:

  • Simple estates: For estates with straightforward assets and no disputes, probate legal fees can range from $2,500 to $10,000, depending on the lawyer's fees and the state's probate laws.
  • Complex estates: For larger or more complicated estates with multiple properties, business interests, or disputes, probate costs can exceed $10,000 and may reach $20,000 or more.
  • Hourly rates: If charged by the hour, expect rates between $150 and $500, depending on the lawyer’s expertise and geographic location.
  • Percentage fees: In some cases, a probate lawyer may charge 2% to 5% of the estate’s value, particularly for larger estates or those involving complex legal matters.

Always ask for a clear estimate of fees during your initial consultation to understand the total cost of probate representation.

Top Questions to Ask a Probate Lawyer

Before hiring a probate lawyer, it’s essential to ask the right questions to ensure you’re hiring someone qualified to handle your estate needs. Key questions include:

  1. What experience do you have with probate cases like mine?
Ensure the lawyer has experience with estates of similar complexity, especially if disputes or high-value assets are involved.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Ask whether the lawyer charges an hourly rate, a flat fee, or a percentage of the estate, and request a cost estimate.
  3. What is the likely timeline for my probate case?
While it’s hard to predict exactly, an experienced lawyer can give you a general idea of how long the probate process may take based on the specifics of your estate.
  4. What steps will you take to manage and distribute the estate?
Ask about the lawyer’s approach to handling debts, taxes, and asset distribution.
  5. Will you be handling my case personally?
In larger firms, junior attorneys or paralegals may handle some aspects of your case, so it’s important to know who will be working on your probate case.
  6. What are potential challenges we may face?
A good lawyer will be able to anticipate possible issues, such as will contests or creditor claims, and explain how they would handle them.

How to Check the Credibility of a Probate Lawyer

To ensure you’re hiring a reputable probate lawyer, follow these steps to check their credentials and experience:

  • Verify their state bar status: Check with your state’s bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed to practice and has no history of disciplinary action.
  • Look for probate experience: Review the lawyer’s website or professional profile to ensure they specialize in probate law and have experience handling estates of similar complexity.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for online reviews on platforms like Avvo or Martindale-Hubbell to see what past clients have said about the lawyer’s probate experience.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who can vouch for their professionalism and expertise in handling probate matters.
  • Look for membership in professional organizations: Membership in organizations like the American Academy of Estate Planning Attorneys (AAEPA) or the National Academy of Elder Law Attorneys (NAELA) can indicate a lawyer's commitment to estate and probate law.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most out of your first consultation with a probate lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • A copy of the will or trust (if applicable): Bring any estate planning documents left by the deceased, including wills, trusts, or powers of attorney.
  • List of assets and debts: Prepare a detailed list of the deceased’s assets (e.g., real estate, bank accounts, investments) and outstanding debts (e.g., loans, mortgages, credit cards).
  • Death certificate: Bring a certified copy of the deceased person’s death certificate.
  • Contact information for heirs and beneficiaries: Have a list of all individuals or entities named in the will or who are entitled to inherit under intestacy laws.
  • Questions about the probate process: Write down any questions you have about the process, costs, and potential issues you might face.
  • Relevant financial records: If available, bring any relevant financial documents, such as bank statements, property deeds, and tax returns.

By coming prepared, you can ensure a productive consultation and allow the lawyer to provide the best advice for your situation.
