Kate is a wonderful lawyer! We were so blessed to find her to help with our adoption. She was a joy to work with. She kept us updated throughout the whole process, explained things in an easy to understand way, answered our many many questions, responded to our questions very fast, helped us figure out other details after the adoption was final and was all around just wonderful to work with! Thank you again for everything Kate!

She was quick to make a plan and put my mind at ease, then didn't follow through with any of it. She missed court deadlines that resulted in limited options. She neglected to provide me with very important information relevant to my case; things which would have influenced my decisions. This mistakes were expensive and have caused great hardship. I do believe she had good intentions but when she was needed, she realized the mistakes she had made and went completely MIA. If you want the peace of mind that your attorney is doing everything possible to represent you, I would highly recommend rolling the dice with a different attorney. This attorney is still very much a novice in the field with much to learn about the law as well as people.

After I became under investigation, Hannah was able to get me cleared in less then a week. I would recommend anyone to contact her for representation. I was accused of a horrible crime. I less then a week Hannah was able to get the case closed and me from being charged with a crime I was innocent of. No other lawyer was willing to help me, but she took my case and got the case closed. I thank you Hannah for the time you took to help me.

I highly recommend Hannah Vellinga for any legal services you may need. Ms. Vellinga represented my family member in a very sensitive, complex legal matter and always displayed the highest level of integrity and professionalism. She was dedicated to the case and doggedly pursued even the small details of the case that ended up making a big impact in the outcome. My family and I could not be happier with her services. I also greatly enjoyed working with her and the law firm. All were very friendly and most helpful navigating a very complicated legal system.

If you are reading this you are apparently looking for an attorney. You should stop now. Your choice of John Bednarz could not be better. My first introduction to John was when my wife and I won a will donated by John to a charity auction. Even though this was a simple interaction we were treated with respect and John showed a sincere interest in us and our lives. Life went on and several years later I was badly injured in an accident at work. I did realize that I would need a lawyer to help me with interpretation of legal jargon and to protect me from manipulation by my employers insurance company. I did think of the varying "TV lawyers", but was so glad I did not call them. Beware of doing so. When I met with John I quickly became aware that he knows the process and would definitely be my advocate. He listened, and more importantly "heard" what I had to say. He was knowledgeable in all areas and was able to suggest the best ways to handle situations that arose. I say suggest here as he did present options to me, allowing me to decide things. I was always able to reach him and felt comfortable asking any question. Nothing was trivialized. I never felt that he was going through motions. I genuinely believed he wanted what was most beneficial for me. To sum things up, I would highly advise you to consider John Bednarz. Meet with him and discuss whatever legal proceeding you are a part of. You will see his professional, down to earth integrity. Give him the opportunity to help you. you will not regret it.

I was very fortunate in finding Attorney Bednarz as both my Social Security and Workman's Compensation lawyer. He was successful in his first attempt to win my Soc Sec Disability case. I couldn't believe he got a "win" for me so expeditiously. I was totally amazed at his knowledge and professionalism during that time. At the same time he took on a "first ever" {at the time} of my unique Workman's Comp claim. John fought long and hard for 10 years for me. Often going outside the box for me and my case. He spent many hours of his own time researching the truly difficult and unprecedented case that it was. Ten years after the battle began, Attorney Bednarz came home with anther victory for me.. I would highly recommend him to anyone looking for outstanding representation in both fields of law. He does NOT give up...nor does he give in to the powerful "big business" people whom have millions to spend to defeat you.... You won't go wrong with this professional and diligent man. Once again, I thank you, Attorney John...as I've come to know him.

Stated he would represent me. Asked that I not appeal, wait and re-apply for disability. Asked that I forward medical and employment paperwork but would not meet me face to face. Stated no contract needed to be signed as he was giving his word and I didn't need to worry about that. Stated he needed me to pay a neurologist 2k to get disability work up and that this neurologist was going to diagnose me with "XYZ", nothing close to my actual physical diagnosis. Insisted that I must pay and see this provider and that I could not use a neurologist covered by my insurance. Totally unethical and misguided then dropped me when he realized I wasn't going to pay to see his buddy. Wasted 1 1/2 year of my time. I have since found a real honest to goodness attorney who is really trying to help me. Accepted the case on contingency and signed a proper agreement. The fight is difficult enough when you are sick and seeking legal help. Find someone who will not waste your time. The stress boiler room only gets worse as time goes on. My medical condition is much worse now because of this.

My experience with Mary Conner Pool was an Absolute bad experience! Half the experience, she didn't even know what was going on, I literally asked her about terms or things that I knew of and she's supposedly a lawyer, she told me "no". So how could this be!! My case got dismissed!! I feel if you want to keep your livilihood, based on what happened to me, which was horrible, we paid a lot of money and our interest was a joke. But, God is not sleep and He is the ultimate Judge, this gives me joy. Don't waste your time, I beg you!!!!.

Mary Pool was excellent! She provided me with knowledgeable information on both Chapter 7 & 13 Bankruptcies in a professional manner and really helped me navigate the process. She accomplished more in 2 sessions than a former attorney did in approximately 8 months. The initial consult was informative, I was given a packet of information to complete/gather and the next time we met I just brought the completed packet along with support documents and she filed it. She was by my side when I met with the bankruptcy trustee and has been great to work with. She explains things very well and is thorough. I would not hesitate to recommend her to anyone needing bankruptcy assistance.

Mr. Rockafellow represented me in my recent divorce. He listened to my side of the story, and provided advice based my case and my facts. He worked with me on a payment plan; he wasn't the cheapest lawyer out there, but I decided I didn't want the cheapest. I wanted someone that would represent my best interests, and those of my children as well, and he made that possible. This lawyer was very sloppy in court. He would often show up late. Every time I met with him, he would have food stains on his clothes. He doesn't seem very knowledgeable in landlord tenant law. I won this case on the grace of God. During meetings, he often spoke up for the opposing side instead of representing his client. He was also extremely rude during a follow up call once the case was over and he was paid in full. If your considering hiring this attorney, DON'T!

Mike Jewett is a decent lawyer, hes helped my husband out in the past on a discounted fee (family friend of my husbands) but he is rude and a bit disrespectful. While trying to talk to him on the phone regarding a matter i guess he couldn't hear me because of my 20month old and 3 year old who were talking to me. I moved in a room where i could still see them but hopefully he could hear me and my girls (being only toddlers) did not like that and only got louder. Now as any parent knows you cant just go somewhere and leave toddlers alone to go talk on the phone or anything for that matter without jeopardizing their safety. You also cannot tell a 3 year old or 20month old to be quiet and expect them to comply. I told him when he stated "cant you get them quiet?" i said to him "no, what do you want me to do mike? They are 3 and 20 months! I cant just make them be quiet!" he told me then " you have no parenting skills and need to get some!" WHAT! So innapropriate and disrespectful! I wonder if he has kids? Just doesnt seem like something someone who has had children and has been in my shoes would say. I just told him "thanks for your help! Send me the fee!" and hung up. So if you want a decent lawyer hes your guy but expect rude comments and unprofessionalism on his part!

Harvey Grad is an excellent lawyer who showed me he truly cares for his clients by going the extra mile to help me resolve my personal injury case that had become quite overwhelming to me while I was dealing with recovering from severe injuries. Mr. Grad and his staff were very helpful in explaining the process and helping me reach an optimal outcome. He even provided me with a much needed pep talk reminding me that we were pursuing the case to recover damages from the defendant who's negligence took so much away from my life. While I would never wish anything like I went through on anyone else, I would highly recommend Harvey Grad to anyone who has been wrongly injured due to someone else's poor decisions.

I felt that Mr Slater was a decent attorney. I cant say that I was completely satisfied. I feel like he in many cases went with the easy resolution rather then fighting for what I wanted and could legally have with some negotiating. My biggest issue is that I was not kept informed with what was going on in my case. We only met once outside the court house and he didn't take enough time to understand my position on many issues. In between hearings I would get court papers no human contact. When I did call him to clarify the documents I was often told its just a formality don't worry about it. I feel that he will do what he has to do, although if you are looking for someone who will truly work with you and and take the time to fight for you then he may not be your best bet. If you have an easy separation and just need someone to be there for paperwork then he is great.

When I met Mr Lambert, I was a Pro Se litigant in a discrimination case in The United States Federal Court, Western Tennessee District,The Honorable Judge- Beatrice Donald (presiding). He was not my attourny, but instead the representation of the respondant in my case. At the beginning of the Pre-Trial Conference, Mr Lambert took the time to tell the Judge "Your Honor, "Miss Bxxx" has been the best pro se litigant we've ever encountered. She is more knowledgable of the Federal Rules than most of my constituents" . While the Judge was impressed with this , I also was impressed with Mr Lamberts candor. He did not have to offer such a compliment while serving the interests of the opposition. This immediately told me that Mr Lambert was fully capable to see both sides of the coin. If I could,I would work for this man.

Sharon was incredibly motivated, but obviously operating under very immense stress levels. My case was very high conflict with many complexities, but Sharon often seemed annoyed when I asked for advice. In the short time she represented me, she frequently complained that she would rather be doing anything else than deal with my case. This made it very difficult for me to approach her with anything, and the working relationship quickly deteriorated. Regardless, I really liked her, and I believe Sharon is a good attorney. I still sincerely wish we could have worked things out. I think maybe she has just reached the burnout level in her career and should consider retiring or doing mediation full-time instead.

I would recommend this lawyer if you have plenty of money. He did an excellent job with the custody motion, however I was only able to use him until a hearing was scheduled, and had to proceed pro se. This lawyer requested a larger than normal retainer (due to my particular situation) and stated that when the retainer ran out, he would let me know before he started billing me. This did not happen and he billed me $8,000 beyond my retainer.

What a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Can Do for You

A Social Security and Disability lawyer specializes in helping individuals navigate the complex process of applying for and securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. These lawyers assist clients in filing applications, gathering necessary medical evidence, appealing denied claims, and representing them in hearings before administrative law judges. A lawyer can help maximize the chances of approval by ensuring that the paperwork is accurate, deadlines are met, and legal standards are addressed.

If you are disabled and unable to work, or if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied, a Social Security and Disability lawyer can guide you through the legal process to obtain the benefits you’re entitled to.

When Should I Hire a Social Security & Disability Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer in the following situations:

  • Applying for SSDI or SSI benefits: The application process for disability benefits can be complex, with strict requirements and documentation. A lawyer can assist in completing the application correctly and submitting the required medical evidence to improve your chances of approval.
  • Denied disability claim: If your initial claim for SSDI or SSI benefits has been denied, a lawyer can help file an appeal and represent you in hearings. Many claims are denied initially, and having legal representation during the appeal process significantly increases the chances of success.
  • Requesting reconsideration: After an initial denial, you have the right to request reconsideration of your claim. A lawyer can help present new medical evidence or correct any errors in your original application.
  • Hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ): If your reconsideration request is denied, you may request a hearing before an ALJ. A lawyer can represent you during the hearing, preparing you to answer questions and presenting a strong case based on your medical and work history.
  • Proving medical conditions: If your disability involves complex medical conditions, a lawyer can help gather expert medical testimony or additional evidence to demonstrate that your condition meets the legal criteria for disability.
  • Overpayments and cessation of benefits: If the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims you were overpaid or attempts to terminate your benefits, a lawyer can assist in challenging the decision and protect your right to continue receiving benefits.
  • SSI for low-income individuals: If you are applying for SSI, which is based on financial need in addition to disability, a lawyer can help ensure that your financial records are correctly submitted to meet SSA’s strict income and asset limits.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid mistakes that could delay or jeopardize your claim.

What Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Do?

A Social Security and Disability lawyer provides a range of services to help individuals navigate the application and appeals process for SSDI or SSI benefits. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing initial applications: A lawyer can help prepare and file your SSDI or SSI application, ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately and medical evidence is included.
  • Gathering medical evidence: A lawyer works with your doctors and healthcare providers to collect medical records, treatment histories, and expert opinions to support your disability claim.
  • Filing appeals: If your initial application is denied, a lawyer can file an appeal and guide you through the reconsideration process, ensuring that any additional documentation or evidence is provided.
  • Representing you in hearings: A lawyer will represent you in front of an administrative law judge, helping you prepare for the hearing and arguing your case to demonstrate that your disability prevents you from working.
  • Handling deadlines and paperwork: A lawyer will ensure that all deadlines are met, and that any requests for additional information from the SSA are responded to promptly.
  • Negotiating settlements (for private disability insurance claims): If your disability benefits claim involves private disability insurance (in addition to or instead of SSDI/SSI), a lawyer can help negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company.
  • Fighting benefit terminations or overpayment claims: If the SSA attempts to terminate your benefits or claims you were overpaid, a lawyer can defend you in administrative proceedings or file for a waiver or reconsideration.

How Are Social Security & Disability Lawyers Paid?

Social Security and Disability lawyers are typically paid on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if your case is successful, either through the approval of your disability benefits or winning an appeal. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The fee is usually 25% of your past-due (backpay) benefits, but no more than $7,200. This fee structure is set by the SSA, and lawyers cannot charge more than this amount for SSDI or SSI cases.
  • No cost for future benefits: Lawyers are not entitled to any portion of your future monthly disability benefits. Their fee is strictly limited to a percentage of your backpay.
  • Additional costs: In some cases, you may need to pay for additional expenses, such as obtaining medical records or expert witness testimony. These costs are usually minimal, but it’s essential to ask your lawyer about any additional expenses upfront.

It’s essential to confirm fee arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid misunderstandings.

How Much Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer is typically structured around the contingency fee system outlined by the SSA. General cost information includes:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer’s fee is capped at 25% of your backpay, with a maximum of $7,200. For example, if you are awarded $10,000 in backpay, the lawyer will receive $2,500 (25%), and you will receive the remaining $7,500.

Overall, there is no financial risk in hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, as they only get paid if your case is successful.

Top Questions to Ask a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

Before hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with Social Security Disability cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling SSDI and SSI cases similar to yours, particularly if you have a complex medical condition.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Confirm that the lawyer charges a contingency fee and that you won’t owe any fees unless your claim is successful. Ask if there are any additional costs for medical records or other expenses.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Disability claims can take time, especially if you’re appealing a denial. Ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what the typical timeline is for cases like yours.
  5. How will you help me prepare for my hearing?
If your case is going to a hearing before an administrative law judge, ask the lawyer how they will help you prepare for testimony and present your medical evidence effectively.
  6. What happens if I’m denied again?
Ask about the next steps if your reconsideration or appeal is denied, including the possibility of further appeals to federal court.

How to Check the Credibility of a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable Social Security and Disability lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for Social Security experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in Social Security and Disability law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on Social Security Disability matters.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Membership in organizations like the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to representing disability claimants.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Medical records: Bring copies of your medical records, including doctor’s notes, test results, treatment histories, and any disability-related diagnoses.
