Child custody case. I talked with Neva Witt one time then the rest was through her office. I completed paperwork and paid in full up front. That was my first mistake. The communication was horrible. I would call with no return call. I would email with no return email. When I finally said that I was taking my business elsewhere someone contacted me. I was told they couldn't keep up with their caseload. Eventually I had to contact my ex's attorney to get closure. Oh and all the UNRETURNED phone calls and emails....I was charged for EVERY one. DO NOT USE unless you want a lengthy drawn out process and pay a high price for it. The judge laughed at my petition because it took them to long to file (7 months). I had to settle with his attorney myself. I went to Witt because of reputation, and got burned. Total bill around $4000 and I did all the work.

We used Neva Witt in our difficult guardianship case of our 8 year old granddaughter. Neva kept us informed at all times and guided us in the directions we needed to take. In the court room she was prepared and the opposing counsel was put to shame in her presenting her clients case. We trusted Neva completely and did exactly as directed and we could not be more happy with the results. We have our granddaughter!!!! We would recommend her 100%

Mr Benedetto represented me in my divorce. My case had international elements, and I had previously consulted another lawyer who told me that even serving my foreign spouse would be very difficult. Mr. Benedetto got this important task done easily and quickly. Right away, he had some creative ideas that I would not have thought of, and that I believe most lawyers would not have thought of. These creative ideas led to a very good settlement for me, whereas less creative thinking would have probably left me with very little. He was knowledgeable throughout and struck a good balance between consulting me as to what I wished done, but advising me on what would be best. I never felt he forced my hand, but still, he had a way of easing me into what would be most in my interest for me to do. I would say he is a peacemaker at heart, which is not what one expects from a lawyer. But I feel it is the best approach in family law cases, and in my case led to settlement. The opposing lawyer was always trying to fight, and to escalate situations that were already anger provoking. Mr. Benedetto had a great way of calming the situation at various junctions where, without his input, I think a settlement might have become impossible due to the anger of everyone else involved, including the other lawyer! Another real plus is that he is very easy to get in touch with. I have heard nightmarish stories from friends who hired other lawyers, who were not responsive to their calls. Mr. Benedetto was very responsive and available. He really made me feel as if my case was special. I'm sure he makes every client feel this way, and I highly recommend him as a great lawyer, ethical person and just an all around good man.

I worked with Ted about 15 years ago on a very big case. He was the most attentive and efficient injury lawyer I’ve ever dealt with. His follow ups sometimes were frequently but needed and he won my case in a very short time! Over the past 15 years I have trusted Ted to refer many friends and family; as well as him always being available to answer my questions. I highly recommend him and would definitely work with him again!

Even got my hair cut for me once as well as helped to connect me to my mother and her side of the family whom I hadn’t seen nor spoken to in many years. His office was slow to keep me updated. He was late to my hearing. He tried calling while racing to my hearing and to prepare me. The call dropped several times. He didn't call before the hearing date to prep me. Once the hearing was over his Assistant Sheila began harassing me for fees owed to them "by agreement." Cost me a lot of money and time and extra pain. There is literally no compassion from this person concerning your injuries. I found it impossible to reach him, or to get a response from him. There would be weeks of emails and calls and no return call or email. Because I felt stuck and he was telling me I had to pay him so I needed to settle, I settled for nothing. I think he displays the conduct and behavior we all believe to be true for lawyers; being similar to used car salesmen.

I had a hearing for SSDi, my lawyer was late, but thankfully the hearing started even later. He had not even reviewed my case case since our first meeting six months earlier. We had about an hours wait until my hearing that he did ask about and review my information, but during the hearing answered several questions incorrectly and had to continually read and ask me for information I think he should have known. The judge was getting annoyed from every time my lawyer was prompted for information and had to pause to read through the paperwork.

I legit have court in the morning and I am not prepared. I asked my attorney (MARK BESTUL) to get a continuance and that I couldnt miss work for 90days and he emphatically said no! He said the judge wouldn't approve it as the initial order would be "halfway into the order." Ummm, what the hell does that even mean IF they can be granted from 1 year to 5? Nevermind my abuser (yes, it's DV) was granted a continuance to 1) LEAVE THE COUNTRY. Then, they 2) gave me the wrong address to the courthouse. Then, 3) it was reset for lack of time last week. I asked Mark this last week as getting all the necessary documents, etc would take some time AND I did not want to lose my job. I called and asked what I could do to escalate it for his boss to speak with him and was told I could file a grievance. Yes, a grievance that WOULD take weeks/months to resolve. I have court in the morning, less-than 1 weeks after the last court appearance that was reset by the judge. This is ridiculous. This is why people handle things their own way as doing it the "right/preferred" way gets you wholly ignored and minimized. I will end up dead and it'll be my fault that I didn't do what exactly? Report, file, comply??? He is a joke and this agency is a bigger joke. 😔

This is supposed to be an organization that helps those who cannot help themselves in a tricky, confusing legal system. They know their clients are likely to not have computers (why are their documents barely fillable on a phone??), and they know their clients likely do not have bank accounts (why TF do they ask for a debit card???), and they know their clients have likely been screwed over by the legal system time and again (why do they make it difficult to complete a process like getting a d*mn ID????). If I could leave zero stars I would. Do your job, Legal Aid of Nebraska. Do your job.

I am very grateful that I found Rebel Brown Law Group. Marianne Brown was incredible from day one. My separation/divorce process took almost 18 months. It was contested and very stressful to say the least. I listened to Marianne’s guidance and direction every step of the way. She fought for me and was relentless at every turn. I was fighting an uphill battle, but she believed in me and was supportive to the end. Ultimately Marianne was integral in avoiding a trial and successfully mediating in the final hour. I attained 50/50 custody and reached a compromise. If you are looking for help from someone who genuinely cares, then call Marianne!

Mr. Cook is very knowledgeable and experienced. Glen has provided guidance to me on two occasions. Glen took my case before an administrative law judge and prevailed on the merits. It was a difficult journey and Glen and/or his staff was there for questions, explain the law, encouragement and of course, sometimes to correct my thinking. "Just the facts," is the motto! It is helpful if you listen carefully and ask questions, keep an open mind. At times things might seem difficult, yet you must learn to adapt. There is no such thing as a "slam dunk." Mr. Cook will give you a candid opinion (might seem blunt); however, this is his style. On meeting, assess whether you think he will be a good match, then evaluate your situation accordingly. Mr. Cook is the best of the best in my opinion; I was more than satisfied with the outcome!

Glen Cook was my first foray into the scary world of Disability. I had spoken with his paralegal? over the phone & thought, she was great, she asked all the right questions and felt my case was a slam dunk. (It was). She set up a consult for the next day. However, Cook was not as impressive. (Just don't tell him that) as he condescending spoke to my wife and I. I happened to repeat what I felt were key points and he asked my wife "does he always do that? We've already covered that" and suggested a mental health evaluation, (for clarifying my position!?) The cost of which would come out of my pocket after the case was closed! What? Did I hear you correctly? I'm about to pay you 6K for a day's work! So I said, "look, I don't know what you're talking about, my case is a physical issue, not a mental one & I'm asking you to be my attorney, not my doctor". (He also misinterpreted a "new law" that would have cost me about $12K) He then sarcastically told my wife that she should show all my medical records to "whoever we found to take the case" she asked, "so you're not going to take it"? He replied "No". I guess you need to kiss his a** to be a client and, that's just not me. We left that office very upset, this was our first shot and I felt afraid I'd screwed things up. (yet I had to listen all about his G.B. Packer partial ownership) Bottom line Mr. Cook is an egomaniac, with a mental disorder of his own. Our next stop got me the proper amount ($12K+ more than if Cook had taken it) and of course, no silly doctors were ever mentioned. I won without going to court. I suppose I should send him a Thank You card. I was never able to assess his legal skills but his bedside manner needs a ton of work. Go elsewhere and save some humiliation and more unnecessary stress. This process has plenty of that without an adversarial relationship with your own advocate. I'm certain all would agree with that. (see all these other reviews, even good ones refer to his "brusque" manner & pay close attention) I should have done it myself, but it appeared just too daunting a task. I'm not going to recommend anyone but if you like being treated like a child sent to their room & grounded, Glen Cook may just be your guy. He doesn't deserve a star, which would be more accurate.

I hired this firm to file an SSDI claim. I was wounded in Afghanistan and eligible for expedited SSDI claims processing. In attempting to communicate this to the staff representatives when I filed my claim and in subsequent phone conversations. I was told the firm was not familiar with the Wounded Warrior expedited process and I would need to handle that myself. In an effort to explain the provision the lady I spoke with identified herself as an attorney but then refused to answer my question and passed me off the a supervisor. I informed him that she had identified herself as an attorney and was rather rude. He assured me she had not identified herself as attorney when clearly she had. The end of the conversation was the same. I would need to handle my situation directly with the SSA and the firm could not help me. If you are veteran/wounded warrior I would be very cautious about engaging this firm.

Working with this group has been a very poor experience, this group needs to be more detailed oriented when it comes to estates, would not recommend them in dealing with probate or estate issues. For example, sending the original will to another firm without notifying executor of estate and telling me they don't have it in their possession anymore. They lack attention to the details and a don't care way of dealing with matters.

Very professional and extremely knowledgeable. We needed to change our Wills and related documents after we retired to Ohio. We were very pleased from the beginning to the end. The cost for their services was more than reasonable.

In 2018 my father passed away, unfortunately due to not having a will, we had to begin the probate process. Here we are beginning 2023 and his file is still active, sitting on a shelf. I'm still having to file for extensions like I'm asking for more time, when all I am trying to do is get past this whole process. I have called, emailed and reached out too many times to count and here we are, approaching almost 5 years, still not settled!!! Unbelievable

For anyone considering hiring this firm for divorce representation, I highly encourage you to reconsider. Upon retaining them for my own proceeding, I had thought I was hiring the best in Cleveland. In every aspect I felt I was under-represented and there was a complete disregard for communication and explanation of processes. Unanswered emails, phone calls never returned, attempts to reach out to senior partners (that never responded) to try and resolve matters. In short, I can only say that as one of the most stressful situations you will face in life, it is my opinion that you will only be compounding that stress in hiring this firm. A truly disappointing experience.

People try to find lawyer because they need help. They have a income guideline, $60,000 a year. If I have a child and need the child support, isn't obvious I don't make that kind of money. Especially while in school. Terrible. Layers just don't care anymore

What a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Can Do for You

A Social Security and Disability lawyer specializes in helping individuals navigate the complex process of applying for and securing Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits. These lawyers assist clients in filing applications, gathering necessary medical evidence, appealing denied claims, and representing them in hearings before administrative law judges. A lawyer can help maximize the chances of approval by ensuring that the paperwork is accurate, deadlines are met, and legal standards are addressed.

If you are disabled and unable to work, or if your Social Security Disability claim has been denied, a Social Security and Disability lawyer can guide you through the legal process to obtain the benefits you’re entitled to.

When Should I Hire a Social Security & Disability Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer in the following situations:

  • Applying for SSDI or SSI benefits: The application process for disability benefits can be complex, with strict requirements and documentation. A lawyer can assist in completing the application correctly and submitting the required medical evidence to improve your chances of approval.
  • Denied disability claim: If your initial claim for SSDI or SSI benefits has been denied, a lawyer can help file an appeal and represent you in hearings. Many claims are denied initially, and having legal representation during the appeal process significantly increases the chances of success.
  • Requesting reconsideration: After an initial denial, you have the right to request reconsideration of your claim. A lawyer can help present new medical evidence or correct any errors in your original application.
  • Hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ): If your reconsideration request is denied, you may request a hearing before an ALJ. A lawyer can represent you during the hearing, preparing you to answer questions and presenting a strong case based on your medical and work history.
  • Proving medical conditions: If your disability involves complex medical conditions, a lawyer can help gather expert medical testimony or additional evidence to demonstrate that your condition meets the legal criteria for disability.
  • Overpayments and cessation of benefits: If the Social Security Administration (SSA) claims you were overpaid or attempts to terminate your benefits, a lawyer can assist in challenging the decision and protect your right to continue receiving benefits.
  • SSI for low-income individuals: If you are applying for SSI, which is based on financial need in addition to disability, a lawyer can help ensure that your financial records are correctly submitted to meet SSA’s strict income and asset limits.

Hiring a lawyer early in the process can help you avoid mistakes that could delay or jeopardize your claim.

What Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Do?

A Social Security and Disability lawyer provides a range of services to help individuals navigate the application and appeals process for SSDI or SSI benefits. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing initial applications: A lawyer can help prepare and file your SSDI or SSI application, ensuring that all necessary forms are completed accurately and medical evidence is included.
  • Gathering medical evidence: A lawyer works with your doctors and healthcare providers to collect medical records, treatment histories, and expert opinions to support your disability claim.
  • Filing appeals: If your initial application is denied, a lawyer can file an appeal and guide you through the reconsideration process, ensuring that any additional documentation or evidence is provided.
  • Representing you in hearings: A lawyer will represent you in front of an administrative law judge, helping you prepare for the hearing and arguing your case to demonstrate that your disability prevents you from working.
  • Handling deadlines and paperwork: A lawyer will ensure that all deadlines are met, and that any requests for additional information from the SSA are responded to promptly.
  • Negotiating settlements (for private disability insurance claims): If your disability benefits claim involves private disability insurance (in addition to or instead of SSDI/SSI), a lawyer can help negotiate a fair settlement with the insurance company.
  • Fighting benefit terminations or overpayment claims: If the SSA attempts to terminate your benefits or claims you were overpaid, a lawyer can defend you in administrative proceedings or file for a waiver or reconsideration.

How Are Social Security & Disability Lawyers Paid?

Social Security and Disability lawyers are typically paid on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if your case is successful, either through the approval of your disability benefits or winning an appeal. Here's how it generally works:

  • Contingency fee: The fee is usually 25% of your past-due (backpay) benefits, but no more than $7,200. This fee structure is set by the SSA, and lawyers cannot charge more than this amount for SSDI or SSI cases.
  • No cost for future benefits: Lawyers are not entitled to any portion of your future monthly disability benefits. Their fee is strictly limited to a percentage of your backpay.
  • Additional costs: In some cases, you may need to pay for additional expenses, such as obtaining medical records or expert witness testimony. These costs are usually minimal, but it’s essential to ask your lawyer about any additional expenses upfront.

It’s essential to confirm fee arrangements with your lawyer during the initial consultation to avoid misunderstandings.

How Much Does a Social Security & Disability Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer is typically structured around the contingency fee system outlined by the SSA. General cost information includes:

  • Contingency fee: The lawyer’s fee is capped at 25% of your backpay, with a maximum of $7,200. For example, if you are awarded $10,000 in backpay, the lawyer will receive $2,500 (25%), and you will receive the remaining $7,500.

Overall, there is no financial risk in hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, as they only get paid if your case is successful.

Top Questions to Ask a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

Before hiring a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to ask the right questions to ensure they have the experience and expertise to handle your case effectively. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with Social Security Disability cases?
Ensure the lawyer has experience handling SSDI and SSI cases similar to yours, particularly if you have a complex medical condition.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Confirm that the lawyer charges a contingency fee and that you won’t owe any fees unless your claim is successful. Ask if there are any additional costs for medical records or other expenses.
  3. What is the likelihood of success in my case?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case and the potential challenges you may face.
  4. How long will the process take?
Disability claims can take time, especially if you’re appealing a denial. Ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to last and what the typical timeline is for cases like yours.
  5. How will you help me prepare for my hearing?
If your case is going to a hearing before an administrative law judge, ask the lawyer how they will help you prepare for testimony and present your medical evidence effectively.
  6. What happens if I’m denied again?
Ask about the next steps if your reconsideration or appeal is denied, including the possibility of further appeals to federal court.

How to Check the Credibility of a Social Security & Disability Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable Social Security and Disability lawyer, follow these steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Verify their bar status: Check with your state bar association to confirm that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and has no history of disciplinary actions.
  • Look for Social Security experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in Social Security and Disability law and have successfully handled cases like yours.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about the lawyer’s professionalism and success rate.
  • Ask for references: A credible lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on Social Security Disability matters.
  • Check for memberships in relevant organizations: Membership in organizations like the National Organization of Social Security Claimants' Representatives (NOSSCR) can indicate that the lawyer is committed to representing disability claimants.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a Social Security and Disability lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Medical records: Bring copies of your medical records, including doctor’s notes, test results, treatment histories, and any disability-related diagnoses.
  • List of medications and treatments: Provide a detailed list of any medications you are taking, treatments you have received, and ongoing medical care related to your disability.
  • Denial letters (if applicable): If your disability claim has been denied, bring a copy of the denial letter from the SSA, along with any documentation related to your appeal.
  • Work history: Provide information about your previous jobs and work history, including details about how your disability has impacted your ability to work.
  • Social Security application (if already filed): If you’ve already submitted an application, bring a copy of the application and any correspondence you’ve had with the SSA.
  • List of questions: Prepare a list of questions you have about the legal process, the lawyer’s fees, and what to expect in terms of timelines and outcomes.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your case more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice tailored to your situation.
