I made the best decision when I chose Catherine Fleming of Fleming Law to represent me in my lawsuit against the city of Seattle. I had a bicycle crash on a poorly marked Seattle street which left me semi-paralyzed and permanently in a wheelchair. Catherine is a personal injury attorney but has a special interest in representing injured cyclists, pedestrians or vehicle drivers who sue municipalities for negligent road design. My case was a complicated one due to a preexisting condition, but Catherine had built a strong case, and the city did not want to risk going to trial. They proposed settling out of court, and during her skillful mediation, I was granted a 7-figure settlement, an amount which far exceeded my expectations and for which I am forever grateful to Catherine. This can only be attributed to her in-depth preparation, knowledge of the law, and prior experience with cases against the city of Seattle. I found Catherine because of another attorney’s high praise. He is a prominent Seattle attorney, and even though he specializes in bicycle accidents, he said he doesn’t like taking cases like mine, against the city of Seattle, as they were high risk and hard to win. He said there’s only one attorney that he knew of who has won these types of cases, and that’s Catherine Fleming. It was this referral by another highly reputable attorney and my initial conversation with Catherine that led me to retaining her for my case. She absolutely proved to be the right choice. Catherine is a hardworking perfectionist who skillfully builds a case with tenacity, thoroughness, and an unwavering commitment to fight for her clients. If you have been injured, either cycling, walking, or driving, and think it may be the result of poor signage or road design (or any other reason), consult with Catherine Fleming at Fleming Law. She is one of a few who has the expertise to take on these cases and has earned respect for her many wins. She has earned mine, and I am most grateful that this large settlement amount brings us a newfound financial freedom and peace of mind for whatever our future holds.

We are so glad we found Catherine Fleming and Fleming Law! After my wife’s bicycle crash in Seattle and subsequent spinal surgery, we faced an uncertain future. Before, she had been a strong cyclist and active hiker, but now was confined to a wheelchair with incomplete paraplegia. Not only did we experience the loss of the many activities we had once shared, we now faced looming medical expenses, and the possibility of needing long-term care in the future. We believed that the area where my wife crashed was confusing and dangerous for bicyclists, but were unsure if we had any hope of recovering anything for damages. Catherine agreed to take us on as clients and worked tirelessly to build our case against the city. She amassed evidence that the street design at the site of the accident was unsafe, and furthermore that the city had been aware of this fact. As the case progressed, it became clear that we had chosen the right attorney for the job. She demonstrated a thorough understanding of the issues and the law surrounding bicycles and traffic safety. It was also evident that she also commanded the respect of her counterparts in the City Attorney’s Office. After Catherine guided us through a successful mediation, we were delighted with the settlement. While no amount of money can replace my wife’s mobility, we now face the future with less anxiety. -- Bobby Ball

I wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the outstanding service Sky Law Group has provided throughout my case. From start to finish, professionalism and dedication were evident at every turn. I am particularly grateful to Rosie, who was truly exceptional in every aspect. Steve has been my attorney for my child custody case for the past almost two years. He is understanding, compassionate, and at the end of the day only has my child's best interest at heart. It was been a very complex case and he has helped me through it. We are not out of the woods yet but I know whatever we might have to deal with in the future Steve will have my back.

Attorney Franko was very helpful, knowledgeable, and caring during the events of my case. I had previously hired an experienced attorney from a well-known area firm, and had I continued to retain his services over Attorney Franko's, not only would I have lost financial compensation, I would have incurred increased bodily damage from a misdiagnosed spinal injury that he discouraged a second opinion on. Attorney Franko doesn't over promise compensation, but he also works his hardest to reach the best possible outcome for his clients. I was, and continue to be, treated with respect and kindness. I have recommended him to friends and colleagues, and would continue to do so.

I would like to point out that I was contacted by Mr. Poindexter late on a Saturday night regarding specifics about my case. I truly appreciated the fact that he was working on my case during those late hours, which is a testament to their dedication toward their client(s). Mr. Poindexter's negotiation skills are extraordinary; you won't be disappointed. I am truly grateful for the Delegal & Poindexter firm taking on my case and fighting for a positive outcome.

I had reviewed a few employment and labor attorneys/firms online and consulted a couple before being referred to his firm. His firm was recommended by another attorney and having that endorsement made it an easy choice for me. When I am looking for a specialist in a field, I expect that professional to know his/her trade like the back of their hand. James is very knowledgeable and diligent, and meticulous in his approach. He was very quick to grasp the nitty-gritty of my situation. I would have to say that my case was probably a little unusual and it turned out to be more complicated than I had initially foreseen but that did not faze James. He outlined the probable outcomes and developed a course of action. He gave good advice and patiently answered my numerous questions. His negotiation skills are par excellence and I believe that clinched the matter in my favor in the end. I would strongly recommend Attorney James Poindexter to anyone looking for legal counsel or representation in the area of employment related issues. He will meet or exceed your expectations.

Attorney Seth is for sure a great attorney to have watch your six . If you weren’t in the military that mean to watch your back . He handle my case like a great attorney should and what you expect from a great attorney and even after my case is settled he still handles the little problems that will pop up from your insurance company not paying your medical bills that they should Pay One phone call from him and it’s taken care of and I would recommend Him hands-down 100% And I have recommend at least four people to him . Think of him as going into a hand to hand combat but he has a sledgehammer with him . That’s why when the insurance company sees his name next to your name On a leather head they know they’re in for a fight they won’t be able to get away with anything Or push you over

Robyn is a great lawyer and super personal. I had to acquire her service to help fight for custody of my only son. For a long 18 months, she communicated and explained every question or concern I had throughout the process. she was very professional and transparent throughout every step by sharing email exchanges of the negotiation for custody of my two-year-old son. In the end, she did the impossible by settling my case with 50/50 physical custody because we live in the south and family court is one-sided. Listen, lawyers are expensive, but it was worth it in the long run because now I no longer have to pay child support, and claim child tax credit every other year. Now, this doesn’t mean it will work for everyone, but she will advise you on the do’s and don’t, to help build your case. There's hope for good fathers that want to be a part of their kid's life and Robyn will be a solid asset to your fight.

I can't say enough about my positive experience with Robyn and her staff. My case was very complicated with many financial details. I was told many times by other attorneys that my case would not end in my favor. I felt that my situation was hopeless. Only until I met Robyn did I feel that I was getting heard. She listened carefully with compassion and wanted to understand the details of my case. She actually cares. I have the upmost respect and gratitude for her. I absolutely listened to any advice she gave me and got her the information she needed to help me. I understood very early in meeting her that she means business and that she would always act in my best interest. Truly amazing. I can't thank her enough for helping me get through such a difficult time in my life. By far, THE best attorney.

Aimee Lin helped us with a very stressful, employment law matter. Before deciding to hire Aimee, we had another legal consultation, but we immediately felt at ease with Aimee and moved forward with her. She'll calmly assess the strengths and weaknesses of your case. She'll put you at ease, not in an emotional crutch kind of way, but by bringing her vast experience in employment and contract law to bear on your case. Aimee was reassuring, articulate, knowledgeable, and very committed to developing the absolute best legal arguments for us. She presented many solid legal strategies. She communicated with us throughout our engagement and was super responsive to our questions. Being involved in litigation is terribly stressful, especially for the uninitiated. We felt like Aimee had our back the entire time. If you're considering Aimee for your legal matter, I would definitely recommend her.

A few months ago, my job laid me off without notice. They handed me a 14 page document to read and sign full of legal jargon. Feeling uneasy about signing these papers a friend recommended Aimee to me. Not only did Aimee attend to my needs, but she took the time to go through the document page by page. She explained to be what the job was requesting and negotiated on my behalf for different terms. Not wanting to have any contact with the company Aimee did all communication on my behalf. By the end of the negotiation I received more money than what was originally offered to me. I am not recommending Aimee because she got me more money. I am recommending her because it was clear that my needs were her first priority. She is detailed oriented, trustworthy and caring. Needless to say she is also a phenomenal lawyer. It is without doubt that I would 100% endorse her to anyone.

So far he's an excellent attorney. Spoke with him directly, he spent some time gathering. Info on my initial call himself. Scheduled in person consult within a week during that phone call. Left me with some research to complete to further my position. So far he is right to the point, gets things done; a roll up your sleeves and plow through it kinda lawyer. I like it and hope it stays this "full steam ahead".

Atty Matt Karr is excellent. He spent the time to understand our need for a credit bypass trust. He explained the process in clear declarative English rather than legalese. I feel that his fee was very reasonable. He supported his documents with a video explaining everything so that I could replay it if I had questions. We spoke to other lawyers that charged more and some that charged less. It is very hard to compare prices like buying a car. I recommend that you meet with Matt before selecting an attorney. BTW trusts are his specialty not just another work product.

I have suffered from several illnesses associated with the contamination. After searching out a law firm to handle my claim, I decided to go with Timothy Young Law Firm. The firm has been very helpful by keep me informed of what’s going on with my claim. I feel that they got my back by trying to get me the best result when the Navy decided to settled my claim. I would recommend Timothy Young Law Firm to anyone looking for great legal representation. Boris Simpson

Jose is very clearly good at what he does. I had spoken to a few lawyers before choosing him for my mother's estate planning and none made me feel quite as comfortable as he did. I read every page of those documents and came back with what seemed like a thousand questions. He never missed a beat and never made me feel like I was taking up too much of his time. He showed my mother the utmost respect and patience and for that I'm so grateful. I would absolutely recommend Jose if you're looking for a kind, patient, and capable lawyer.

One reviewer on GOOGLE gave him 1 star for telling her he was "too busy" to take her call -which I HIGHLY DOUBT ---- SO TACKY to take the time of her day to do such a thing. I have NO doubt that Shands would have NEVER EVER told anyone he was, "too busy" because of my 7+ years of knowing him and his professionalism. She missed out with her "quick-to-judge" attitude & hurt feelings because he does not employ a receptionist, or a paralegal to field calls. I will explain to you why this is awesome. And I never ever had difficulty with communication with Shands. He always took my call when he could, and always called me back promptly - even long after my case was over. So, In my opinion, Shands is best described like old school doctors when it comes to bedside manner; very professional, reserved, and compassionate. If you are looking for the best of the best when it comes to employment law, here you go. Shands handled my case about 6 years ago and of course he won it for me because Shands won't take a case unless he KNOWS he can win it. There are no paralegals to plead your hour long story to, only to miss important key details before getting turned down by the attorney. It's just Shands. You actually meet with him and he takes extremely detailed notes and asks tons of questions to help establish your case. I paid my retainer immediately after my meeting with him which was more than fair. Shands was and will always have been a blessing for me, and the validity and justice of my case. I love going back and reading his Prima Facie and the demand letters because they are powerful. I only accept the BEST in my life. I got turned down by a few firms who would not listen to me, and left out key details of my case. It was like I had won the lottery when Shands answered the phone, listened to me, and asked me to come see him. I spent hours and hours, and days researching attorneys before I found Shands. Do not question your judgment - Just hire him. Even if on the first call he is busy and has to call you back--You will be forever grateful. I am So thankful I did--even if I would have lost my case because I know he would have done everything to fight for me.

I was referred to Jason through another attorney and let me tell you, I could not be more pleased. He did an amazing job helping me get guardianship for my 55yr old brother. I had been trying for a few yrs to get this task accomplished. Jason is very professional and compassionate, he truly understands how family's feel going through this rather tedious ordeal. Jason knows exactly what the courts need for all date sensitive documentation. He was always willing to help with calling the Dr. or going to pick up documents for me if need be. My brother and I are very pleased that its completed and safely filed away. I would highly recommend Jason to friends and family! Thank you again Jason!!

I don’t know what we would have done without Jason. My husband and I hired Jason to help us obtain guardianship for our disabled daughter who turned 18 years old this past December. From our initial meeting to help us understand what the guardianship process entailed, to our last meeting in court, Jason was an amazing resource and always so patient and understanding…no matter how many questions I had. My husband and I thought the final court appearance would be a simple formality, but unfortunately, we had a rather cold judge who made it a very unpleasant experience. Thanks to Jason’s calm, knowledgeable and professional demeanor with this judge, we were granted guardianship. We would highly recommend Jason as an attorney who is extremely smart, kind, and professional!

I am the representative payee for my adult disabled son. After five years of my son being disabled and collecting disability, his Doctor and I received a form to fill out for a medical review to see if he was "still disabled." I filled this out perfectly describing my son's day to day life and impairments. Although I am a medical professional, obviously I did not do this as well as I perceived as just before Christmas 2014, we received a notice stating my son was no longer disabled and his disability payments would stop in two months. Social Security was not at all helpful and gave me the run around re: the appeal process. Sometimes Social Security employees were not nice or helpful. I knew we needed help. I researched disability attorneys and found Jason. All I can say is "Thank God." He met with both of us and asked questions about my son's disability and symptoms. My son and I provided all the answers to the review to him however Jason worded it in the manner that SSDI requires, unlike what I had done in the previous summer. He was kind, patient, and understanding. There were a few times when my emotions got the better of me, "How can they do this to us?" These were the times when Jason stood behind us and helped us stand on our own two feet. He directed us in following the instructions on the appeal as they are not easy to understand, Jason understood exactly what they were and explained them in a manner that was both understandable and helpful, never degrading. On May 6th of this year, I received the notice from disability stating that after reviewing all the information, they found my son to continue to be disabled, therefore there was no need for a hearing. Of course I would prefer my son to not be disabled. However it is what it is and I do not even want to think of how awful this denial could have been without Jason. I wish I had known him and used him to initially get disability for my son back in 2009 as that process was not pleasant and took three denials/appeals. I definitely could not have done this without his help! My husband and I are now going to be using Jason for estate planning and our wills.

It is easy to dismiss a 'perfect' review, but my results were what I needed and not over the top in fees or drama. I employed Ms. Fruchtman to intervene on an employment issue that had be washed over by previous attorneys as too insignificant or politically charged in the non-profit sector. My concerns were taken to heart, letters written, conversations had, and in the end, that is what I wanted. I did not want to go to court or sue over a sexual harassment claim. I wanted to be heard and apologized to by the employer. I wanted the perpetrator fired. I wanted them to acknowledge that they were wrong and that I was still watching them to prevent future misdeeds. They were scared. They listened. I was heard. Finally, I was able to sleep again. The perpetrator was 'retired' and women will be safe at that location. I owe that to her calm and relentless professional pursuit of the truth. They listened. That's what I needed. No court, no drama, just a good result for everyone.

My firm was experiencing a major expense reduction and my position was to be eliminated. There was a meaningful discrepancy between what I believed the firm's obligations were to me and the firm believed their obligations to be relative to severance. I highly recommend David Scher and The Employment Law Group (TELG) for labor and employment matters. From the outset, he served my interests in a very timely, professional and knowledgeable manner. David is always prepared for opposing counsel's next move. Working with Scott Oswald, the two are a formidable team that protects their clients interests, along with strong involvement and support of the firm. David's skilled handling of my case and cool head led to an out of court settlement early in the litigation, enabling me to save tens of thousands of dollars in upfront costs and possibly two years of litigation and appeals. He along with the team at TELG are to be commended for their commitment to professionalism and protection of the rights of the everyman and the everywoman, who find themselves facing discrimination and retaliation, or other unlawful acts, by employers who believe they can violate the law with impunity. David and TELG prove them wrong!

What a Discrimination Lawyer Can Do for You

A discrimination lawyer specializes in handling cases where individuals or groups face unfair treatment based on protected characteristics, such as race, gender, age, religion, national origin, disability, or sexual orientation. These lawyers assist clients in filing discrimination claims, representing them in legal proceedings, and ensuring that their rights under federal, state, and local laws are upheld. Discrimination cases may arise in employment, housing, education, public accommodations, or other settings.

Whether you’ve been discriminated against at work, denied housing, or treated unfairly in other areas of life, a discrimination lawyer can help you navigate the legal process and seek compensation or corrective action.

When Should I Hire a Discrimination Lawyer?

You should consider hiring a discrimination lawyer in several situations where unfair treatment occurs based on protected characteristics. Common scenarios include:

  • Employment Discrimination:
    • Workplace discrimination: If you’ve been treated unfairly at work because of your race, gender, disability, religion, age, sexual orientation, or another protected status, a lawyer can help you file a claim with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) or a similar state agency.
    • Wrongful termination: If you were fired due to discrimination or retaliation for reporting discriminatory behavior, a lawyer can assist with filing a lawsuit and seeking compensation for lost wages, emotional distress, and other damages.
    • Failure to promote: If you’ve been denied a promotion or opportunities due to discriminatory practices, a lawyer can investigate the claim and represent you in legal actions against your employer.
    • Harassment: If you’ve experienced workplace harassment, such as sexual harassment or a hostile work environment based on your race, gender, or other characteristics, a lawyer can help you pursue legal remedies.
  • Housing Discrimination:
    • Denial of housing: If you’ve been denied housing due to your race, disability, family status, or other protected factors, a lawyer can help you file a complaint with the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) or sue the landlord or property manager for violating the Fair Housing Act.
    • Unfair rental practices: If a landlord or property manager treats you unfairly based on discriminatory factors (e.g., refusing reasonable accommodations for a disability), a lawyer can help you enforce your rights.
  • Education Discrimination:
    • Discrimination in schools: If you or your child has faced discrimination in an educational setting based on race, disability, gender, or religion, a lawyer can help you file complaints under laws like Title VI, Title IX, or the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA).
  • Public Accommodations:
    • Denial of services: If a business or public service has discriminated against you based on race, gender, disability, or other protected characteristics, a lawyer can assist you in filing a complaint or lawsuit under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) or other anti-discrimination laws.

Hiring a discrimination lawyer early can help protect your rights and ensure that your claim is filed within legal deadlines.

What Does a Discrimination Lawyer Do?

A discrimination lawyer provides a range of legal services to help individuals and groups fight against discriminatory practices. Their responsibilities often include:

  • Filing discrimination claims: A lawyer can help you file a complaint with government agencies, such as the EEOC, HUD, or your state’s human rights commission. They ensure that your claim is properly documented and filed within required time limits.
  • Investigating discrimination claims: Discrimination lawyers gather evidence, interview witnesses, and review documents to build a strong case for proving discriminatory practices.
  • Negotiating settlements: In many cases, a lawyer can negotiate a settlement with the employer, landlord, or other party involved in the discrimination case, seeking compensation or corrective action without going to trial.
  • Representing clients in court: If your case goes to court, a lawyer will represent you during hearings, present evidence, and argue your case before a judge or jury.
  • Handling retaliation claims: If you face retaliation for filing a discrimination complaint or reporting discriminatory practices, a lawyer can help you pursue a retaliation claim.
  • Advising on legal rights: A discrimination lawyer explains your legal rights under federal and state anti-discrimination laws, such as Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, the ADA, the Fair Housing Act, and others.

How Are Discrimination Lawyers Paid?

Discrimination lawyers typically charge for their services based on the complexity of the case and the expected duration of the legal process. Common payment structures include:

  • Contingency fee: Many discrimination lawyers work on a contingency fee basis, meaning they only get paid if they win or settle the case. Their fee is usually a percentage of the settlement or court award, typically ranging from 25% to 40%.
  • Hourly rate: For cases that don’t involve a contingency fee arrangement, some lawyers charge by the hour. Hourly rates for discrimination lawyers generally range from $200 to $600 or more, depending on the lawyer’s experience and the case’s complexity.
  • Flat fee: For simpler legal tasks, such as drafting a discrimination complaint or providing legal advice, some lawyers may charge a flat fee.
  • Pro bono or reduced fees: Some discrimination lawyers offer pro bono (free) or reduced-fee services, especially in cases involving low-income clients or significant civil rights issues.

It’s important to discuss fee arrangements during your initial consultation to ensure that you understand the total cost of legal services and how payment will be handled.

How Much Does a Discrimination Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a discrimination lawyer depends on factors like the complexity of the case, the lawyer’s experience, and the potential for a settlement or trial. General cost estimates include:

  • Contingency fees: If the lawyer works on a contingency basis, their fee will typically range from 25% to 40% of any settlement or court award. For example, if you win a settlement of $50,000 and the lawyer’s fee is 30%, they would receive $15,000, and you would keep the remaining $35,000.
  • Hourly rates: Discrimination lawyers who charge by the hour typically bill between $200 and $600 per hour. For example, a case that takes 20 hours of legal work at $300 per hour would cost $6,000 in legal fees.
  • Flat fees: Some legal services, such as filing a discrimination complaint or providing a legal consultation, may be available for a flat fee ranging from $500 to $2,500, depending on the complexity of the task.
  • Pro bono or sliding scale fees: In some cases, particularly for low-income individuals, lawyers may offer reduced fees or work pro bono.

Always ask for a detailed estimate of costs during your consultation, and clarify whether the lawyer offers flexible payment options.

Top Questions to Ask a Discrimination Lawyer

Before hiring a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to ask key questions to ensure they have the experience and qualifications to handle your case. Key questions to ask include:

  1. What experience do you have with discrimination cases?
Ensure that the lawyer has handled discrimination cases similar to yours, whether it involves employment, housing, or public accommodation discrimination.
  2. How do you charge for your services?
Clarify whether the lawyer charges a contingency fee, hourly rate, or flat fee, and ask for a detailed breakdown of costs.
  3. What are my chances of success?
Ask the lawyer for an honest assessment of your case, including potential challenges and the likelihood of success.
  4. How long will the process take?
Discrimination cases can take time to resolve, so ask the lawyer how long they expect the process to take, from filing a complaint to reaching a settlement or going to trial.
  5. Will I need to go to court?
Ask whether your case is likely to settle out of court or if a trial may be necessary. If a trial is possible, ask what steps the lawyer will take to prepare.
  6. What damages or remedies can I seek?
Ask about the types of compensation or corrective action you can pursue, such as back pay, emotional distress damages, job reinstatement, or policy changes.
  7. What steps should I take to protect my rights?
Ask for advice on how to document evidence, handle workplace or housing interactions, and avoid retaliation while your case is pending.

How to Check the Credibility of a Discrimination Lawyer

To ensure you are hiring a reputable discrimination lawyer, take the following steps to verify their credentials and track record:

  • Check their bar status: Verify that the lawyer is licensed to practice law and in good standing with the state bar association. You can check this on your state bar’s website.
  • Look for discrimination case experience: Review the lawyer’s website or profile to ensure they specialize in employment law, civil rights, or discrimination cases and have successfully handled similar cases in the past.
  • Read client reviews and testimonials: Look for client reviews on platforms like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to see what previous clients have said about their experience with the lawyer.
  • Ask for references: A reputable lawyer should be able to provide references from past clients who have worked with them on discrimination matters.
  • Check for certifications or memberships: Look for certifications or memberships in civil rights organizations or employment law associations, such as the National Employment Lawyers Association (NELA).

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To get the most out of your first consultation with a discrimination lawyer, it’s important to come prepared with relevant documents and information. Here’s what you should bring:

  • Detailed account of the discrimination: Provide a clear description of the discriminatory actions, including dates, locations, and individuals involved. Document specific incidents and any witnesses who can support your claim.
  • Workplace or housing records: Bring copies of relevant employment or housing documents, such as job performance evaluations, rental agreements, emails, or written correspondence related to the discrimination.
  • Company or organization policies: If the discrimination occurred in the workplace or housing, bring copies of company policies, employee handbooks, or housing agreements that outline anti-discrimination policies.
  • Evidence of damages: Provide evidence of any financial losses, such as lost wages, job termination, or increased rent, as well as emotional or psychological distress caused by the discrimination.
  • Previous complaints or actions: If you’ve filed previous complaints or taken any action related to the discrimination, such as reporting the issue to HR or filing a complaint with a government agency, bring copies of those documents.
  • Questions about the process: Prepare a list of questions about your legal options, potential outcomes, and the lawyer’s approach to handling your case.

By preparing thoroughly for your consultation, you can help the lawyer assess your situation more effectively and provide the best possible legal advice for pursuing your discrimination claim.
