Due to the previous circumstances of my marriage, I was facing a twelve-year alimony liability that would have been financially disastrous for me, and would have prevented me from making a new start. Paula weaved together an astonishingly favorable settlement agreement that saved me tens of thousands of dollars, through courteous and efficient negotiations with the other side, even factoring in overseas jurisdictions, due to some of my assets being in Europe. She drafted depositions and related court documents that helped my case enormously, and represented my interests in the courtroom with aplomb; the courts were at the time Zoom-only due to COVID. I found myself in need of a divorce lawyer. A friend recommended me their attorney. My divorce was not going to be typical. I had two boys that were 6 and 3 and their mom was not in a grounded place. I needed to have custody. I had to hold things together. It was not promising. Dads did not fair well in 1999 regarding custody.
After a number of meetings it was clear that there was going to be trial. My attorney had a vacation planned and she had to bring in a partner. Enter Paula Berg.
In under an hour Paula told me a few basic things that I could rely on when testifying at trial. She was honest, and that does not always mean what I want to hear. She told me that I had the right lawyer and that I had to do exactly what I was told, because we were a team. She explained that dads do not typically get custody, and she followed that up with "so what, I do not have a problem going against the odds". She is a kind, warm person, but that is not how I would describe her professionally. Paula is very no nonsense, direct, and she knows the law. She knows what judges need to do their job. That is worth reading twice. I have referred Paula to a few friends, which also resulted in success. Again, pick the right lawyer and do exactly what she says. She is the right lawyer.

Matt handled my divorce proceedings simply and efficiently. He thoroughly and promptly answered my many questions, made all requested modifications to the agreements, and communicated with my ex and all officials so that I didn't have to. Starla Zehr helped me navigate the divorce process that included 2 small children within the Oakland County, Michigan court system. I was grateful to have had her expertise and ear when it came to representing me and my best interests. She always took into account my overall situation and presented me with all the potential options I could pursue. She assisted me in making reasonable and thoughtful decisions during stressful times and fought for the issues I was steadfast on with her lawyer gloves strapped on. As lovely as she is, I don't *hope* to see Starla again, but with that tricky ex, it could well be a reality eventually. I am just glad I have a solid professional to turn to should anything that requires a motion or a judge ever comes up in the future. I had a couple of referrals to attorneys, but Starla actually represented my ex's 1st wife in her divorcing him, so I looked her up, saw she was closeby in Waterford, took it as an overall sign from the Gods and gave her office a ring. The time she took with me during the free consultation was generous and the information she provided was eye-opening. Figured hiring her would make also make it twice as nice for the ex, so I would like to thank him for the personal referral when. He would periodically mention Starla's name over the years with low-grade hate, wincing eyes, and a wee bit of a snarl. If that isn't the best form of marketing for a lawyer referral, I don't know what is. And who doesn't love a highly personal recommendation, right? Elissa Perkins is beyond a wonderful, smart and amazing attorney! She was appointed to me during my very complicated and difficult divorce and child custody case. I am a single mother with a young five year old boy which whom I was very concerned about and was seeking supervised visitation with his father. Without the help of DCPP, Elissa was my only hope. At first we were not sure of her style but after a 3 hour consultation we knew Che was the type of attorney we wanted. She listened to us and gave us feed back as well as possible superiors. Lisa Sale was my daughter's court-appointed counsel in a custody matter, my daughter is "special needs" and quite sweet and emotionally fragile. Lisa Sale was a compassionate ear and reassured my daughter's that her voice would be heard which eased her emotional frustration of not being able to explain herself due to her delays. Further, Lisa was always firm and fair to both parents but also made it clear she was representing my daughter's best interest; independent of us. Mid 2011, I engaged Robert to resolve an intense family law matter that occurred subsequent to my divorce. Robert was able to not only efficiently solve the issues at hand, but he skillfully laid the groundwork for future boundaries and behaviors.

My case was in really bad shape, the other party secretly filed for sole everything! without my knowledge, then lived with me for 2 years and never mentioned a thing. When we split they claimed to the courts I was never involved in my childs' life and never responded to the paternity papers. They used every dirty trick you can think of, I had back to back Temporary Restraining Orders being thrown at me, at the same time finding out about another request in our case. The other side wanted to zero out all my time with a default judgement to lock it in. I had only days to reply and went with a family recommendation. This was a mistake! I didn't research the guy, I didn't feel comfortable with his laid back game plan. In fact, he had no plan, and did more harm than good. I wish I would have contacted a serious attorney like Jesse. But I didn't, instead I researched and contacted legal aid organizations. Another mistake. They did help me understand the legal process and really made me feel like I was part of the case, but in fact I see now after using them so many times, they are just lazy and wanted me to write my own case, while they polished it up with legal jargon. After wasting my time and money with those downtown organization and still getting hassled by the other parties unemployed boyfriend and the drunk step dad, the final straw came when they started punishing my daughter for not wanting to call the boyfriend dad. I FINALLY CALLED JESSE! I looked around, did my research. I knew what to look for in an attorney now, I wanted someone who knows the way around the courtroom, who's not afraid to square up in the hallways with other parties attorneys. Jesse didn't let us get pushed around, I immediately got results at custody court and quickly retained Jesse Verdin for my child support case. When I called him, I was a few weeks away from a serious court date. We met up at my conveniences near my house, I have a 5 inch thick case file over the last 4 years. I have been dealing with attorney's for all of my life and I trust this lawfirm like I trust my family. I found Christopher Melcher's name while feverishly researching IRS codes etc., regarding alimony and mortgage contributions. My ex-husband was insisting that I claim not only my spousal support for the entire 2012 tax year as income (which I knew about and was prepared to do) but also his "mortgage contributions" as well.
My ex gave me 40% of the mortgage monthly for the "marital home" from January 2012 to October 2012. This was home, not only to myself, but to our children as well. Both my ex and I were on the deed and the mortgages. I never imagined that mortgage consideration would be taxable to me!
My own attorny was zero help on this. After 2 grueling years of being his annuity, I wasn't surprised that once again, he was unable to give me a definitive answer. That's why I set out on a mission to understand the divorce and IRS tax laws on my own, which quite frankly, is comparable to my becoming a physicist. But I persevered, and came across a terrific article on the topic by Mr. Melcher. I was so impressed with this article that I decided to contact him, even though we were in different states. I was hoping that since this was a federal tax income issue, he might still be able to help me regardless of where I lived.
I am not only happy that I reached out to Chris-- but I'm ecstatic! He responded immediately to my online inquiry and he asked me to email him all the various court orders. I emailed the files and he wrote back-- again on that same day---outlining his advice, answering all my questions concisely and thoroughly.
Thanks to Chris's keen perusal of my 3 court orders, he caught something that I would have never realized (and sadly neither would my own attorney). The one court order that was executed in June of 2012 had modified the September 2011 court order, and made it "retroactive" to September 2011. Chris explained that the IRS will not recognize that type of modification, retroactively. The June 2012 order was modifying the older order for child support, keeping the amount of money the same, but changing the breakdown from all child support to child, spousal and mortgage contribution. Chris explained that the IRS would only recognize the order that was in place at the time of the payments. So.....now this meant that EVERYTHING my ex paid me prior to June 2012--in the eyes of the IRS---would be considered ALL child support!
He also weighed in on the mortgage consideration issue, explaining that since my ex was also on the mortgage at the time of those payments, they were not spousal support, and that it would be a very difficult case for my ex to make. He confirmed my thinking that I should not take those payments as income, and suggested how I could give my ex his "fair portion" of the mortgage interest. This will now be a very small amount since, as Chris pointed out, according to the court documents, there was no mortgage contributions ordered until mId year! Can you say KARMA?!
Chris and I exchanged a couple of emails and we had one phone call (which by the way he made to me while on his family vacation!). Chris is obviously extremely sharp, extremely knowledgable, very kind and he was very generous with his time.
I was also very impressed that on all of Chris's emails, his cell phone is listed along with his other contact info! Very unusual, and I think that says a lot.
Moral of the story? Trust your instincts, be your own advocate, don't be bullied, do your homework, and call Chris Melcher.
If I had a "re-do"- I would live in CA and hire Chris to handle my whole divorce!

We chose Amy Wicks after interviewing about a dozen attorneys for a move-away case. We were moving out of state and our daughters father was disputing. She handled everything quickly and efficiently. She made sure we understood all angles that could be taken by the opposing party and she was honest with us about the possibilities of what could happen. In court, she was by far the most prepared and hard-hitting attorney in the room. The opposing (and actually more experienced) attorney threw a fit and had to apologize to the Judge because he could not keep up with Amy in a professional manner. She had an immediate and valid response to every argument he brought up. In the end, she kept the move-away case from developing into a trial and we were able to settle, gaining more than what we had originally asked for because Amy is that good! We will use her for everything custody related moving forward and we only wish we had found her 6 years ago when this all began.

Attourney Paula Fox represented my daughter in a custody case, which lasted about 3 years, as her "ARC" Attourney. Kevin is incredibly knowledgable and smart, and he is one of the very few lawyers who can handle high-conflict trial cases well. He is never afraid of litigation and will maximize your chance of winning. He won the restraining order against me in multiday trial. Kevin was recommended to me by my uncle and was at first reluctant about changing my lawyer. What has impressed me about Kevin is that he is honest and efficient in tackling the various roadblocks that have come up in my case.
