Jack recently represented us in a CPS trial. It was a tricky case that involved another family as well as our own. We were terrified but Jack absolutely came through for us. Neither myself nor my husband had ever been involved in any sort of legal problems before and he was there for us every step of the way. As awful as our situation was, we thought there was no way we would lose our case because we hadn't done anything wrong. After an initial hearing (with another attorney that was friends with Jack and referred us after the first hearing), we realized just how serious our situation was. Apparently civil cases don't need the burden of proof that criminal cases do to convict, and with our children being threatened, well, there just aren't words for what we felt. Jack walked us through the entire process and his knowledge on the topic of family law was intimidating to say the least. I hope that no one ever has to experience what our family experienced but if you do, you could not place your trust in a more deserving individual. He absolutely knows what he is doing. Just to add, I will say that we were initially put off by his office because I think we expected some nice, spacious room with a bunch of furniture that never gets used, plants all over the place, etc., and I think we called him entirely too often because of our inexperience with attorneys but he was never impatient with us and always returned our calls as soon as he was able. Oh, and for anyone familiar with CPS, even though we lost the initial hearing, our case was, for all intents and purposes, over only a month later. Even though we didn't have another hearing for 6 months, we did everything Jack asked us to which showed the Judge that we had nothing to hide. CPS allowed our children home well before the closing date of our case.

Mr. Watson represented my company in a case where we were fighting to obtain what was rightfully ours based on a set of rules an organization had provided but did not choose to follow. Mr. Watson was incredibly attentive and swift which was necessary due to strict time constraints. We won the case and owe it all to Mr. Watson. I highly recommend.

We were in an auto accident several years ago when a large truck hit our mini can at high speeds causing a back injury and eventually a surgery. Even though we were not at fault, the insurance company would not help out with medical bills and time off work. We decided we needed a lawyer and we contacted John Frances. That was the best decision we could of ever made. He went above and beyond in helping us. Anytime we called his office, he returned our call immediately and kept us informed and up to date. He made sure we were taken care of. He had the insurance company pay for the medical bills, the surgery and we were reimbursed for lost wages and bills that accumulated. He's a man of his word and he did a fantastic job.

I was personally involved in a car accident a few years back. I was taken to the hospital and treated for a neck injury that resulted in surgery. The accident report showed the other individual was at fault. But as I learn quickly dealing with the insurance companies was almost impossible. A friend recommended that I should go see Greg Zarzaur. Greg set down with me many times as we reviewed my case. Of course there was no question after meeting him that he was the right attorney . I could tell that he cared deeply and understood my situation. The case is over today and the insurance company settled with me for around $120,000. I am sure that without Greg I would never have received any substantial amount of money. It's not really even the money. As of today I have gone through two surgeries but with that said I do feel like the insurance company's were held liable. Would I recommend Greg to a friend, ..........I'd put them in my car and drive them to his office.

I have just hired Melanie Bradford and her partner, John Holliman, to help with my parents estate. They are hands down some if the best probate attorneys in the state. They were very knowledgeable regarding various trusts, documents, etc when it came to VA and Medicaid law. They also were very professional and prompt to get back with any questions I had. I would highly recommend them for any estate work you need. I will also be using them to update my husband and my wills and trusts.

Five years ago we purchased a timeshare and have regretted it every day since. Many times we wondered if there was any way to terminate, but reluctantly continued paying and began to accept that we were probably stuck with it until the contract expired. After contacting Zetrouer Pulsifer, we worked with their team and we are now beyond happy to say that our contract has been terminated! We couldn't be happier with the outcome and the experience we had working with Zetrouer Pulsifer!

Our construction company, RRA Construction, had to sue a non-paying client and Thomas came as a referral from another attorney for our case. If you are going through or have gone through a case, then you would know how imperative it is to be armed with a winning attorney. Even though we were stressed out of our minds, Thomas reassured us. He helped keep us calm throughout the process. RRA Construction was impressed with Thomas's extensive knowledge and in utilizing his services, we have become a better company in the end. We have Thomas to thank for helping us with our case.

I had an insurance claim that the insurance company quickly denied coverage for. An attorney friend referred Mr. Les Robertson to me because he's an expert in insurance coverage and has a great reputation. Since the first conversation, Mr. Robertson was warm, empathetic, and very clear at explaining the law related to my situation. He told me the insurance should have provided the coverage and was willing to help. In a surprise turn, the insurance company changed their mind a couple of days later and decided to cover for the claim. I didn't need to work with Mr Robertson further but I will not hesitate at all to reach out to him again if there is a need. Highly recommend him!

Vicki Shoemaker is an excellent attorney who is knowledgeable and tenacious and who prepares thoroughly. She has an uncanny ability to quickly identify all issues related to a matter and to decisively put a plan of action into effect. She does not waste a client's time or money. Her integrity is beyond reproach and she has a true passion for justice. As the attorney who represents me in a complex litigation, she works with me, listens to me patiently, keeps me informed in a timely manner and advocates diligently on my behalf. She researched exhaustively and prepared fully for depositions and filings and she advanced compelling arguments supporting my position.. She used expert witnesses to great advantage in order to support our case. We have had a number of successes along the way and I am confident my case will ultimately be resolved fairly and in my best interests. Vicki's attention to detail has proved to be of great value because she does not miss small bits of information that can be crucial in winning points and she knows how and when to use her arsenal of information. Her arguments are always reasonable, rational and based on fact. I am happy to recommend her to any prospective client for litigation and business disputes as well as arbitration and mediation to settle disagreements for which she is certified and eminently qualified

I hired John to assist me with an auto accident case. John was a pleasure to work with. When I first met John, he had a professional and calm demeanor, which immediately put me at ease. The auto accident left me in pain, anxious, and worried about paying my medical bills. John was very reassuring and encouraged me to continue the treatment that I needed so I could most importantly, start to feel better. I found John to be very knowledgeable of the legal process. He communicated well with me during the process and kept me up-to-date via phone calls and e-mails. He worked diligently on my case and I received full compensation for our injuries. I received a much larger settlement by using John than if I had settled with the insurance company without using an attorney. I had met with the insurance company prior to hiring John, and the amount they wanted to settle for would not have covered hardly any of the treatment that I needed. John went above and beyond to negotiate my major medical bills down to a small percentage of what I was initially required to pay. He even followed up on a couple of the lingering bills after our case was settled. I would highly recommend John to friends and family and would use him again if needed.

An associate of John Kelly at Hanft Fride, PA, Mr. LaCoursiere helped successfully defend me in a civil suit. He initiated and finalized very thorough legal case precedent analyses and memoranda of law, as well as interviewing affiants and securing affadavits. His communications with me were timely and helpful. I think he is polite, capable, competent, professional, painfully honest, objective, articulate, and honorable. I'm convinced he'll mature to become one of Minnesota's best lawyers.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
