The free consultation was no-pressure and very informative. I felt at ease and it really gave me confidence in hiring Mr. Handler. My divorce was going to be nasty and he assured me that he would help make it as smooth as possible. It was tough but in the end Mr. Handler more than earned his fees.

Mr Probus took my case a couple of years ago and he was able to save my business. I do not want to get into particulars but, I was scammed by a hard money lender and Matt was able to turn a horrible situation completely around for business. I have known Pablo for a few years and he has helped me greatly with 2 of my cases. One was dismissed and the other got reduced to a very minimum charge, compared to the original charge. He is one of the more affordable attorneys in town as well, but that dont let that fool you, he is very professional and willing to help! He has been around for some time and he really knows his stuff. I would highly recommend him!

I was referred to Mr. Shaw in 2005 and retained him to represent both my company and me in a breach of contract / deceptive trade practices lawsuit in District Court in San Antonio, Texas. Unlike the several other attorneys that I retained prior to Mr. Shaw, he successfully extricated my company and me from any liability. Since that time, he has represented my business, me personally, and many of my business associates and friends based on my recommendation. He has resolved every claim and protest pertaining to my company's contracts with the federal government and the State of Texas. Most of these matters were settled without litigation, which saved my company thousands of dollars. He has successfully represented my company and me in lawsuits in the District and County Courts in Texas. All of these lawsuits were resolved favorably. His legal advice on labor issues and contracts has enabled my company to avoid legal problems on numerous occasions. My business associates and friends, that I have referred to Mr. Shaw, have an equally high opinion of him and his work. Anytime I need an attorney, he is the attorney I call.

I hired Mr. Guequierre long-distance after receiving his name from the Lawyer Referral Service. I felt confident I had a solid case, but needed legal expertise to move past a stalemate in direct negotiations. After an initial call with Mr. Guequierre, and a few emails to clarify some questions, I felt confident that he had the necessary expertise and experience to help, and was trustworthy (of particular concern being out of state). In the initial call, Mr. Guequierre also clearly explained how the case might unfold, and what legal costs would be involved, so I knew what to expect and could assess the cost/benefit. He also indicated that he felt we had a good case, given the issue and the fact that I’d documented everything along the way. Thus, I hired him. He began with an intake process to gather information and documentation for me in a well-organized way. He then engaged the other party's legal counsel, and we eventually reached a settlement that matched what I'd tried to negotiate without legal assistance. Through the process, Mr. Guequierre responded to my inquiries in a timely manner, shared detailed knowledge about relevant areas of the law and legal proceedings, kept me in the loop on all communications with the other party, shared helpful advice to help me make decisions about potential settlement terms, was diligent about following up with the other party to get a response in the agreed upon time, and was easy to communicate with (personable, approachable, etc.). Overall, I found him to be professional and honest. I would recommend him and hire him again if needed.

I became Ms. Smith's client when I was unable to get a mortgage loan because there was a mistake on my credit report and my score dropped more than 50 points. Ms. Smith was so kind in listening to my concerns and the damages I experienced because of the mistake that was not even my fault. She sued the credit card company and the credit bureaus on behalf of me and was able to remove the mistake on my credit report. Once the mistake was removed, my credit score flew sky high and I was able to get a mortgage loan. THANK YOU!!!!

I brought a breach of contract lawsuit to Ray in which I was the defendant. This was a complicated case which involved a fraudulent SEC regulated security and a settlement agreement obtained through duress and fraud that I was forced to sign. After being forced to sign the settlement agreement or lose my retirement savings over a fraudulent securities deal, I wanted to inform the authorities about the brokers, who were the sellers of the securities. So I went to FINRA the SRO who regulates the brokers. I explained what had happened. They suggested I try and workout a solution with the brokers before taking any action with them. The sponsor of the deal, the one who had forced me and my fellow investors into signing settlement agreement sued me when he got wind about what I was up to. (the broker contacted them) I had to explain to Ray how the agreement was being used to cover up several crimes. Those of fraudulent securities sales , theft of fiduciary property, elder abuse , conspiracy between attorneys, the bank, the brokers and the sponsor. Ray quickly figured out what was going on. After that point he use all his skills and knowledge to figure out ways to turn the case around and put the plaintiff on the defensive. The Plaintiff had the judge in their pocket as the plaintiff's firm was a big powerful political contributor. The judge gave the plaintiff every break at every turn. We lost three MSJ's and the judge was hostile to my attorney. The judge refused to allow us to make a record until we finally got in front of the jury at trial. Long story short. We took the case to trial and the 12 member jury found by unanimous decision that the plaintiff had not been damage by my breach and the judge was forced to render a decision that I could report the crimes to the authorities. The plaintiff was forced to pay all my legal bills and his own totaling nearly $400,000 in legal fees and expenses because Ray had tendered a certified offer to settle early on in the lawsuit. Ray knows his stuff, he is a fighter and seasoned trial lawyer and I would recommend him in a heart beat to anyone looking for someone knowledgeable in SEC securities litigation and contract law. At the end of the day Ray was able to put the plaintiff in a worse position then before he had filed his lawsuit against me. Now the plaintiff will have to wonder who's going to be knocking on his door next....could it be the SEC or maybe a DA or the FBI.

All I can say is this man works tirelessly to win your case. Very low key. Works for you even during court recess. Show me anyone who does that. Former Trial Chief for Travis County. I was impressed and I am hard to please. A so called utility worker filed a criminal charge on me and Mr. Roark exposed him as just a tree cutter tresspassing on my property. The jury was out 15 minutes and found me not guilty. If you pass this guy up for an attorney you are making a mistake. I had a lot to lose. He stopped the prosecution in their tracks.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
