Clayton was excellent to work with! He walked my husband and I through a very difficult process...writing our wills. I didn't realize how many details we would have to ponder. Luckily, Clayton was prompt with answering our calls and emails. He also took the time to explain various "hypothetical" situations to us so that we could have the appropriate wording in our wills. He was quick to revise each draft which allowed us to complete the process in a timely fashion. I also appreciate that he was understanding of my husband's travel schedule, and even arranged night and weekend hours to meet with us. I feel confident that we chose the right lawyer and will definitely utilize his services down the road.

I contracted Mrs. Cummings for some advice on employment law. Even though she didn't have expertise in the specific area of employment law I needed help with, she produced a thorough, concise, and well-researched memo that far exceeded the results I've gotten from other boutique employment lawyers and is better than 95% of the work product I've received from white-shoe firms I've worked with in the past (that charge $800/hr or more!). Highly recommended

Shawn handled my divorce case incredibly well. He explained everything thoroughly. His rates are reasonable. And he’s kind and caring. I couldn’t ask anything more of an attorney. Shawn also volunteers his time with Vesta, a great non-profit service for those getting a divorce: They have workshops–most are free–as well as low-cost retreats with experts in law, finance, dating, etc.). They helped me keep my sanity. Check it out at vestadivorce.com. I recommend Shawn highly!

I CANNOT say enough positive things about Attorney Levitz. To give a brief summary, I was recently going through a divorce w/ child custody involved. I started out with a different attorney. Although the process started a year ago it was dragging out. What should have been a simple, textbook case cost me SO much unnecessary time and money. Several days before the most recent court date I was frustrated and knew I needed to switch lawyers because I was so unhappy with mine. I asked a personal injury attorney I knew for a recommendation for a family law attorney and he recommended Bob Levitz. Despite the fact I only had a few days before the next court date I called Attorney Levitz's office and my call was immediately returned by his paralegal Michelle (who is WONDERFUL as well). Attny. Levitz was on vacation, interrupted his trip, and came up to meet with me and to take my case. At the consultation he was personable and knowledgeable and assured me he would take good care of me and hopefully be able to wrap up the case. I felt confident in his ability. Although I had a good experience at the consult, his demeanor and assistance in court really blew me away. He has been in practice for over 40 years and seems like he knows every inch of the law. He is a true advocate for his clients, and stood by me and for me unconditionally. His approach is firm, yet calm and he made me feel at ease the whole time. In the one court session he was able to tie up all loose ends of my case and get everything finalized and me out the door within a few hours with everything in the case going the way I had hoped and prayed it would. My ex-husbands attorney who had previously been giving the run around/playing games at all the other court dates suddenly became reasonable when my lawyer dealt with her, and by the end of the day was even asking Attorney Levitz for advice on some of her other cases. He is THAT respected, personable, and knowledgeable. It was honestly a pleasure to have him as a lawyer. My only regret is that I didn't start out with him to begin with! If you are looking for a lawyer I HIGHLY recommend scheduling a consultation with Attorney Levitz and seeing if he can help you. I cannot fathom how anyone could be disappointed by him. If I could give him 100 stars I would. -Laura B. / Franklin MA

Like the plumber with the stopped up sink, I am an attorney who put off having an estate plan done for a decade or more. I finally decided to engage the law firm of Samuel, Sayward & Baler to do my own estate plan, including Wills, Trusts, Homestead, Durable Powers of Attorney, Health Care proxies, etc. I will confess that it takes time and was challenging for me. The law firm was professional, knowledgeable and “user friendly”. They were responsive, diligent and had tremendous follow through. They did outstanding work which was tailored to my family’s needs. Once it was completed, the relief and satisfaction at having my estate planning behind me was enormous. I couldn’t be happier with the estate planning work done by the law firm of Samuel, Sayward & Baler. Do yours sooner rather than later. They understand, they can help, and the peace of mind you will feel afterward is priceless . As a satisfied client, I would recommend this law firm to anyone.

I highly recommend Michelle for both elderly law and handling estate considerations. She handled all matters regarding my husband's elderly parents. When my parents-in-law passed away, her advise and expertise in elderly law was invaluable. Everything went smoothly and during the stressful times of sending parents to nursing homes and death it is important not to have to worry about legal matters. Michelle handled my will which is something my in-laws did not complete and could have caused many hard feelings. I have recommended Michelle to several people. She handles my mothers legal matters as well. So I am confident that her matters will go as smoothly as my in-laws.

He performed an initial assessment of our situation and carefully crafted recommendations for changes that he was able explain to us clearly. He then gave us a fee estimate for his scope of services and drafted all new documentation for us (as well as correcting some errors he discovered in our title documents). He performed all work in a timely and professional manner.

Boyd & Boyd, Centerville, MA, are experts in elder law. We went to one of their free seminars that was advertised in a mailing. We liked what we saw, and there was no pressure. we learned that Probate will cost our heirs 3-5% of our estates. We also learned that only a trust, not a will, avoids probate. Even if a Trust only saved our heirs 3-5% of our estate (although it can do much more), it would be a no-brainer. That alone would far far exceed the cost. So we worked with Keats Boyd to set up a comprehensive estate plan- Trust, Wills, Powers of Attorney, Health Care Proxies, Living Wills, Homestead protection, etc. Some of the things that especially impressed us were: 1. Working with Keats-it was very easy-he's likable, friendly, down to earth, gentle, patient- a quality person. 2. Services and fees were clearly explained ahead- no surprises or misunderstandings. 3. Permission to call with questions without being "on the clock" for extra charges. 4. Yearly updates of documents, and three year reviews, at no extra charge. 5. Should anything happen to us, Boyd & Boyd has everything, knows everything, and will walk family members through what needs to be done. In summary, we had a great experience, and enthusiastically endorse F Keats Boyd III. Dave & Nancy

Shani Rae Collymore helped me through the process of buying my first multi family investment property. Not an easy transaction as it was also a short sale. Ms Collymore made herself available to me for all the questions and uneasiness I had during this process. She made me feel comfortable even to ask what might have seemed like a silly question. She had more professional ism in this transaction then one could ask for. She knows the laws, the correct procedures and has the sense of urgency when requried. More than I can say for the others involved in my transaction. When I start to think about purchasing my next properly, Ms Collymore will be the first one I call. I am confident she will get me through the process with as little heartburn as possible. Without reservation, Shani Rae Collymore will be recommend by me to anyone in need of legal services.

Attorney Kinder helped me during a very difficult and terrifying time in my life. I had significant concerns and questions during my custody/support dispute. I was very concerned about being able to financial handle the burden of a trial, and litigating the issues that needed to be addressed. Attorney Kinder walked me through each phase of the process and was very considerate of all of my concerns. I was kept informed of everything throughout the process. Attorney Kinder truly cared about myself and my child. She remembered everything about me and my child that we discussed and was able to repeat details when speaking to the judge that not many other attorneys would remember. She advocated strongly for me and was able to negotiate in such a way that benefited me and my child, but did not bankrupt me or my family. I would highly recommend her in the future.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
