While acting as a "judge" in a South Carolina Circuit Court, Newman refused to appoint legal counsel for me, after Newman relieved my previous counsel. Then Newman compelled me to represent myself in a "trial" that, purportedly, was to commence within hours. Additionally, Newman denied me a continuance to prepare for "trial". It was all a SHAM! I have filed a civil rights action against Newman and others. Visit: https://unicourt.com/case/pc-db5-laconey-v-lott-et-al-998465

I found Mr Dubois though Google. I liked his description of practice and thought he was an attorney who actually wanted to help people. That was not a good basis for my decision. I have since learned to consider more concrete and reliable information. I contacted this office about holding my property manager responsible for illegally interfering with MY contract of service on the property I own. I have everything from pictures, emails and text messages concerning this case. (A slam dunk) I paid a $500 retainer for Mr Dubois to address this case and included other infractions that my property manager has done including allowing a rottweiler into the unit ( a breed that is banned within our POA and my insurance), Said dog bit my HVAC tech and failed to report it me, the property owner. Along with a couple other smaller issues. THIS RETAINER WAS PAID ON APRIL 19th 2023. MAY 2 2023, I get an email with a template asking me to insert my monetary demand. The demand letter was provided to the defendant on (claimed) JUNE 14 2023 - over a month later JULY 5th - I am told the defendant did not respond, and would I like to send another letter? AUGUST 1 - I get emails asking me to confirm information that I am ending my contract with the manager!!??? I am asked what to tell the tenants? I spend MY time reiterating my case and expectations of why I hired Mr Dubois. It is now FIVE MONTHS LATER and I got a demand letter that was denied. And I am left fending for myself yet again. With the same Accountability of emails and timelines, I can support my claims on my own. Mr Dubois is a thief of not only $500. He is a thief of precious time. He threw away my case and ruined my timeline of a logical suit.

My husband and I met with Attorney Warren Johnson in November of last year for some help on a Worker's Comp issue. We were told "time was of the essence" by attorney Johnson and he would write a letter and start communications with our Insurance provider. I followed-up the next day emailing his firm the additional documents he requested. For TWO MONTHS, this firm failed to return any of my phone calls or emails. I finally sent an email asking if the attorney had no intent to pursue our matter with the insurance company, to please let us know. We never received a response. We've taken our case to another attorney in the area who has handled our matter expeditiously and professionally. I am completely disappointed in the lack of response and professionalism in the Johnson Law Firm and Warren Johnson himself.

After a consultation with someone in her office and spending $150 dollars it took a week for them to tell me that they don’t have the time to handle my case. Call me crazy but you don’t know your case load or trials before you take their money. Seems pretty sketchy to me.

I made the mistake of using Mr Miller to update some documents for me. Mr. Miller indicated that he did not do project pricing and I made the mistake of assuming he would be judicious his time. What has previously cost less then $1,000 Mr. Miller attempted to charge me over $5,000 to update a few sections of a policy manual. Mr. Miller then attempted to place a copyright on material sourced from my original document. I would encourage anyone considering Mr. Miller

Ms. Patel of Burr Forman was the outside counsel of our lender The legal documents that were sent to attorneys contained multiple errors, some conflicting errors in the same document. I am the buyer and sole signer of a commercial property, three incorrect versions of my name, including the wrong spellings and a totally different surname in same document. I have worked with many attorneys in different fields, never seen such errors How did they not get caught before getting sent out? There was also an issue with documents being delivered on a timely basis, even bring sent the morning of the closing. When my attorneys contacted her about the errors, they were told she was too busy to fix them. Our attorneys had to make the corrections. What should have been 20 - 30 mins turned out to be almost 3 hours. Simply unacceptable. I will never work with any party that requires working with Burr Forman and Ms. Patel.

I hired him to handle charges against me. I gave him a retainer. He was very hard to communicate with rarely answering phone calls or emails. After charges were dropped he was suppose to file a custody suit for me. After 3 weeks, never heard from him. Office he worked out of hasn't seen him in a while. Finally ran into him at a Wal-Mart in Taylor's. Told him I needed the rest of the money so I could hire a another lawyer. Told me he would call me on Monday, still haven't heard from him. I filed a grievance against him with the South Carolina Bar Association, which takes a while, and he still has the rest of the money I gave him as a retainer.

I would never suggest Ms.Dain for ANY type of legal representation. In my opinion, after many months and thousands of $$, I gained no insight on my case per Dain and most definitely no progress. Instead, she was overly concerned with $$, frustrated when asked questions, sided with opposing party and agreed with their opinions of me when I continued to claim my innocence and need for legal help asap, and never followed through on tasks. In my experience, Ms.Dain acted with extreme negligence handleing my case (where my precious little girl has/had severe loss) and she claims that she actually did work in my divorce/custody case. Rather, she asked ME to get records and reports (so I would save $$), but I saw no change in payment requests and definitely nothing in even simple responses to regular and common things like...itemized bills and requesting same documents from opposing party like they requested of me. She consistently acted in a juvenile and sometimes aggressive ways when questioned or def when pertaining to something she was not interested in discussing/doing. I recently went through my old emails and found a response from Ms.Dain in about refund promised to me and my family once let go. In email, She claims that it is my fault for her incompetence, the PROMISED refund is not going to occur, and that I no longer needed to have contact with her at all. My suggestion is to first-never hire this woman and second-if you have/had issues contact SC Bar immediately. Also, you can look up a couple of her cases online in public domain. I'm not the only one.

I had an initial consult with Parise. We had an hour conversation and I asked her to review only 2 documents to see if she would accept my case. After charging me $1000 to accomplish this, she stated the only reason she couldn't accept my case was that it would be heard in court in a county she didn't feel she could travel to. The county the case was to be heard in was the first question on her intake form-even before my name. That should have alerted her or at least her staff that they shouldn't have even scheduled an appointment. My next attorney was shocked at the $1000 charge to see if she would just take the case.

Difficult to contact and she rushes through the conversations. Every meeting was cut short due to Mrs. Pruitt's personal life, such as her spouse waiting in the car or dinner plans with her daughter. The one returned phone call lasted a total of four minutes. Her statements in court were inaccurate and based on assumptions and hear say. She spoke to the judge on topics not previously discussed.

Disappointing to say the least. Being on the board of a HOA and dealing w Att Roy prior on HOA matters I was highly disappointed and felt mislead. Att Roy in his ad indicates free 1st meeting consultation on Real Estate. I called, the person on the phone took my information, the question I had, verify update needed on partnership in SC. I then asked if there was a charged due to ad and was prepared to pay if there was work to be done after "free" meeting. The lady placed me on hold, returned and said it would be $150-200 to just talk w me!! Sad when he was receiving money from HOA he had time! Would I hire????NO!! If he treats, judges people on the phone, I'm sure he isnt a strong lawyer. I have worked in the courts in NC for over 30 years and things really must be different in SC.

I was falsely accused of a crime by a couple. Ms. Parrott was assigned as my public defender because I couldn't afford an attorney. From day 1, she acted as if I were guilty and didn't believe a word that came from me. She made it VERY clear she has ZERO interest in proving my innocence and that I was just another number to put away and line her pockets. I fought for quite awhile. Eventually I fought so long, they reassigned me a public defender that was WONDERFUL and actually believed I was innocent and the couple accusing me were completely fabricating EVERYTHING they were saying against me. Sadly, my case took so long and she Eventually stopped being a public defender and took another job and OF COURSE, who am I assigned to again?? Karen E. Parrott. However, this time around, she SEEMED like SOMEWHAT believed that I was actually innocent. So i keep fighting and believing SOMEONE will believe that I'm ACTUALLY innocent. Eventually, SHE lied to me to get me to accept a bogus plea deal. Unfortunately, I didn't find out that Ms. Parrott had lied to me, as her client, until a year or 2 after. She KNEW if she came to me with a felony charge for something I DIDNT do, I would shoot it down. So she told me it would show as a misdemeanor charge because I was pleading no contest to a misdemeanor charge and it would show on my record as a misdemeanor. So I TRUSTED HER as my public defender and sign thr plea to get this over with and move on with my life seeing as it was just a simple misdemeanor charge and I wasn't getting locked up, being a single full-time dad. And NOW because of her lies, I have a felony on my record, which was my WHOLE fight to begin with. I wasn't gonna take a felony charge for something I DIDNT do, she knew that and she lied because SHE believed I was guilty from the start. After looking into my case and SEVERAL others she's represented, this ISNT her first time doing this and tends to make a habit of doing things of this nature. If you're EVER assigned Ms. Karen E. Parrott from the Florence, SC public defenders office, do EVERYTHING you can to get reassigned a new public defender. DO NOT think you will be different because you won't. She WILL treat you as guilty from the start and give a "lack luster" attempt at representing you and she is NOT beyond lying to her own defendants to "lighten" her case load. If I could leave her negative stars, I ABSOLUTELY would!!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
