Mr. Jacobson had all my witnesses in court and by my side ready and willing to back me up. He gave me his word that he will perform as professionally and efficiently as possible and he did. In fact he investigated my case more than the police department and myself. He was thorough and kept me and my wife optimistic.

Throughout a lengthy and complicated separation and divorce, Joe consistently provided me with honest, wise counsel regarding the process itself as well as what my options were. His background in the military as well as his extensive experience with family law proved essential. Joe is knowledgeable and honest, and he truly kept my best interests in mind every step of the way. His commitment to excellence and putting the client first have truly made a world of difference in my life. I strongly recommend him to anyone needing a trustworthy divorce/ family law attorney.

She was amazing during our hearing, asking all the right questions. I thought she was soft spoken until trial. Very thorough and to the point. Our case was dismissed! I definitely recommend her for cases against cps. Cps cases are the most difficult to beat, unless you have an attorney who actually cares.

A divorce, even uncontested, is hard on a family and difficult enough without dealing with an unresponsive, slow-moving attorney. After over a year of delays and excuses, I fired him and followed up on a recommendation to contact Grenadier, Starace, Duffett & Levi P.C. Carolyn Abbate thoughtfully explained the steps and court processes. Recognizing my desire for a harmonious post-divorce relationship, she helped smooth out issues that could have become points of contention. Ms. Abbate also sped things up enormously, guiding me in providing her with relevant information, feeding back documents for review and promptly passing them on, which had the added benefit of encouraging my wife’s attorney to match her pace. The outcome was a swift, amicable resolution that allowed family relationships to heal.

We consulted and hired Ms. Borinsky to advise us legally during a Real Estate transaction. We had a great experience with her. She provided assertive advice and was proactive giving us recommendations on details that without her, we wouldn't have noticed or have taken care of prior our Real Estate purchase.. We strongly recommend Ms. Borinsky to work on your side during your Real Estate transactions.

I was recommended to Orest J. Jowyk through a third party and I am grateful I selected him. He was extremely knowledgeable and though my needs were a little out of his normal arena he did not hesitate to offer me his very best. Orest J. Jowyk presented himself extremely well, was articulate in our discussions, and was completely straightforward when he needed to refresh his knowledge (a trait I value highly in my professionals). Orest J. Jowyk was very clear with me about what services I would need and what services I could attend to on my own. He provided me with options very early on and gave no pressure in which direction I should choose. I felt very well informed and I believe the choices I have made are with all the best information I could obtain. I am very happy with our interactions and though I hope I do not again need the services of Orest J. Jowyk in the future, I would never hesitate to contact him. The important part of this review, if the need should arise I would highly recommend Orest J. Jowyk's services.

Speaking personally as a previous client, and as the title to my review suggests, I would highly recommend Mark S. Thrash as an attorney, whether it be for criminal, traffic, or civil cases. I would also like to add and say that his conduct and attention to detail were very professional, and he is highly experienced and knowledgeable in his field, always going the extra mile for his/my case(s) . His attention to detail and demeanor as an attorney is spot on. Mark was very responsive in communication and always returned my calls within 1 day or less if not a few hours. Overall 5/5 stars, so don't sleep on this guy when considering his firm for your defense or any court proceedings/matters.

The case was one where a family trust was questionably liquidated by the trustees to the exclusion of some of the beneficiaries. Earlier, another attorney had advised us that the harm to trust's excluded beneficiaries was not actionable and would probably result in the beneficiary plaintiffs being disinherited. Legal research by Ms Zizzo revealed a practice which worked around the loophole in the law which discouraged beneficiaries from bringing action against trustees with power of appointment in a trust . This resulted in a lawsuit that eliminated the risk of disinheritance and the case was settled out of court for six figures going to each of the wronged beneficiaries. Congratulations to Nate Olansen and Alison Zizzo for not only executing this project well but giving us confidence to proceed every step of the way.

I started my business in 2008 and was introduced to Keith Baker in 2009. Keith Baker is one of DC’s best attorneys, especially when it comes to Government Contract Law, GSA Protest, and contract law in general. I have used Mr. Baker for GSA Protest, which we subsequently won, Federal Government Solicitation Reviews, Teaming and Sub K agreements, and contract law in general. He keeps me abreast of legal updates and provides sound practical advice. Over the years, I have learned that if I have a question to just run it by him first, and his advise has been “spot-on.” He has become a trusted resource and a crucial part of how we do business. He always makes himself available, and his work ethics, accuracy, and attention to detail are incredible. He practices law with a passion and commitment to his clients. His integrity is impressive, and ethics uncompromised.

No matter what I write or say, it will not do justice on how amazing and good they are at what they do. The best way I can describe is, even if I lose a case working with them, it will be much better than winning a case with some other top lawyers. The amount of wisdom and protection you will get working with them will be impossible to put a price on. Mr. Friedlander is the one you want to have on your side once you get to the point of needing a lawyer no matter the cost. No one could have handled our case more delicately, precise, and with so much effective attention and care, You can call me if you think I can answer any questions and I will do it gladly. I was interested to find the firm is all young female lawyers. I gave them a chance and was pleased with the result. I was assigned Jesci Norrington, which was excellent for the job. Jesci wrote an new will for me and found that my home deed needed updating of dual ownership and added survivor clauses to protect either my wife or me. This was all done quickly and looked great, at a reasonable fee. I am well pleased and am spreading the word. Thanks.

My sister and I have had a series of bad experiences with attorneys, with one notable exception: Calvin H. Cobb, III, who is my hero. My problem involved questions I had about my brother's handling of my mother's affairs-most notably his borrowing money on a line of credit he placed on her house I was to inherit. I engaged a reputable attorney but was unhappy with the outcome. She paid no attention to me, was dismissive of my concerns and after spending my retainer money filed a paper that did me no good. She then withdrew as my counsel. I heard good reports of Mr. Cobb so I called him. I had a very different experience. Mr. Cobb listened to me carefully explained to me my brother's point of view and where my grievances may be misplaced, directed me away from the points that were weak and focused my attention on the one legal theory that would allow me to solve my problem. We were able to efficiently convince the Court that my claim was valid and obtained a judgment requiring my brohter to pay off the line of credit. I was delighted both with the outcome and with the manner in which it was achieved. I hope I never need an attorney, but Mr. Cobb gets five stars in my book. I would not hesitate to give him the highest possible recommendation.

Nikki Cumberland deserves lots of kudos in reference to not only her availability but her knowledge in reference to the court system in Radford, VA. When I was shopping for legal services for my son, she answered immediately when I called and took about 20-30 minutes just to listen to my case. She was extremely caring and sympathetic to my needs however not sugar coating the possible outcomes of my case. Her fees were very reasonable and when we met her in person she explained things to my son so that he could understand the process and what was expected of him in court. After his case, she continues to answer my calls whenever I have questions. Her availability and concern for each of her clients is a valuable asset and I would highly recommend her as an attorney.

I was rear ended by a tractor trailer while I was stopped at a red light. The trouble was that I was in a loaner car from my dealership because my car was being serviced. After the hospital and doctors visits, I had to deal with insurance company after insurance company. Each one denied responsibility because I wasn't in my own car. I had no idea what to do and my health insurance wasn't going to cover my physical therapy. Then, I hired Mr. Woodhouse. He told me to concentrate on healing, follow my doctor's orders, and that he would take care of the rest. That's real peace of mind. Not only did he deliver on his promises, but he kept me in the loop though the whole process. He got the insurance company to admit fault and then got me more money than I ever thought possible. He even negotiated my medical bills from physical therapy! And everything was all taken care of within a few months. I wouldn't hesitate to hire Mr. Woodhouse again. He did a great job with my claim and is a great attorney. I would recommend him to my friends and family.

Jennifer Oram-Smith is one of the most delightful and personable people I have ever had the privilege of working with. Even though, what put me in the position of having to hire a lawyer in the first place was not a good thing.... Jennifer's positive attitude and fearless fighting for my case helped make my experience that much better. When you search for a lawyer, you often look for credentials - experience - size of the firm etc.... but what often isn't described is how diligent they are with their clients and their cases. Jennifer was so tireless in her efforts to ensure I got what I was looking for, that each time I sent her an email she was quick to respond that very same day. Communication was key for me as I live in California and needed representation in Virginia. My case was a complex one, with ALOT of history and paperwork to go through, and given the distance and how often I was able to actually meet with Jennifer in person - I can say I am very impressed with the way she conducts business. As far as price goes, it should be no surprise to anyone that hiring a lawyer can be expensive (depending on your case) and you get what you pay for. I made that mistake the first time I hired a lawyer a few years ago and all I walked away with was debt and little to show for it. Jennifer is EXTREMELY fair in her pricing... in fact... I think she may be underpriced as I believe that her level of commitment is valued at so much more. And because of Jennifer's meticulous work and what felt like boundless knowledge of the judicial system, I was able to walk away from court with so much more than I had started with. I would recommend Jennifer to anyone seeking legal help or even just legal advice. Thank you for your help Jennifer!

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
