I hired Ms. Bonaldes to help me with my custodial case. She did nothing of value in my case, yet felt justified in taking my money. She resented that I confronted her about her fees when I asked for justification. Out of a $5,000 retainer fee, she returned to me only $1,700. The bulk of her fees came simply from reading emails. She made no progress in my case, yet requested more money to keep her services. I implore you, DO NOT hire this woman. Save your money.

Very unsatisfied with our interaction from beginning to end. I have tried to get in contact with Ms. Marshall since October I’ve left several voicemails finally in January I’m finally able to get her in the phone her reply i truly apologize i always called you back however i was not able to leave a voicemail on your job line or cell phone. She offers low plea deals just so you can have a “win”. Minimal satisfaction if any.

I do not recommend this lawyer. An absolute nightmare. She does not understand the true definition of anti-discrimination law and needs to practice what she preaches. In my experience with Joyce, she was exceptionally rude and is not someone I would recommend seeking legal aid from.

They really tried to go on google and respond almost 4 months later after they took my fiancés money .. I could not respond so now I’ll be leaving my reviews all over. They are CROOKS and had the nerve to respond like my fiancé didn’t pay him when he paid them all year long and only did not pay when he went to prison. Almost 20 grand and they did nothing for him ….

I had to set up a meeting with the law firm that represented me in my case and Martha T. was appointed to talk to me. While talking to her she was constantly looking the Laptop and searching in her bag. It seemed that she was not interested in my concerns and it was extremely unprofessional and disrespectful. At one point in our conversation she raised her voice (almost screaming at me) and I told her to to stop raising her voice because I didn't come her to be treated in this way. I would not recommend here for any legal matter because she is very rude, unprofessional, disrespectful to the client(s) even though she gets paid through the client.

Howard came off as petty, extremely unprofessional, unresponsive, irate and frankly quite rude. He would not respond to countless e-mails, failed to answer countless phone calls, refused to return messages, and held hostage important files and paperwork without reason or merit. I would not recommend his services whatsoever.

I had occasion to find myself in Judge Tillman's court. The decision he renderwd has ABSULUTELY NOTHING TO DO with this review! He listened attentively to the plaintiff, as would be expected. As the defendant, he seemed as if he could care less about my testimony. I outright refuted the plaintiff's facts and without a moment's thought, the judge ruled in favor of the plaintiff! I sat in the judge's courtroom on the first bench for well over an hour and listened objectively to nine cases ! The judge sustained all of them in the plaintiff's favor withour batting an eye! I'm positive that my decision will be overturned on appeal, but what about all those other people who didn't get their fair Shake! I feel certain that his decisions were entirely based on quotas he had to reach! A fair attorney needs to be open minded and be able to hear out both sides objectively. when taking on a case. If he feels uncomfortable about his client, he shouldn't represent him. As a judge and an attorney, in my opinion, he lacks that ability. if my opinion is worth anything, i'd stay away from him. If you find yourself in his court room, ask for a postponement ! Hopefully you'll get a much more objective and open minded judge who isn't afraid to make a decision that might impact his job !

i hired Reba for a few of my cases which were mostly white collar crime. his fees were fairly priced but his work was sloppy at one point i had a problem with the d.a office due to Robert Ryba's lack of knowledge he made me sign a statement that was issues by d.a. office which ended up incriminating my self. Ryba never fights the battle he always settles with what the city/state has to offer. he shows up to court always late and unprepared. how does a lawyer sit down with his clint and asks him what are we going to argue in court and how are we going to explain the situation and one last note even after i paid him thousands of dollars he would still charge me for consultation every time i went to his office to the discuess my pending cases i worked with Ryba in 2009 until today I'm still cleaning up the mistakes he coused me

Ms. Adewale has handled my case for emergency assistance and was very nasty when it came to dealing with my case. She yelled on the phone and when I asked can she stop yelling at me. She responded that I needed to turn my back phone down. Ms.Adewale made me feel so little when finishing the call and all I could do is cry. Her title allows her to treat other human beings as though they are beneath her. If your case is in her hands good luck if you even get a word out. If she ever reads this. I would like her to know “ Just because she holds a high title doesn’t give her the right to belittle people who needs help.

I hired Shaun Reid to help me fight a workplace discrimination case. Shaun suggested to file a complaint to Division of Human Right, and he ensured me that i will be protected against retaliation from my supervisor. In August of 2014, I received a position letter to dismiss my complaint due to no evidence of “adverse employment action" by Division of Human Right. After the dismissal, I was trying to reach Shaun, and he never respond back to me. I called his office, and left messages to his cell phone several times without any response. I spent $3,000 with Shaun's complaint letter, and one weak rebuttal letter. I could have written these two letters myself, and maybe getting better response. The worst thing is Shaun's disappearance. I got even more harassment from my supervisor after my initial complaint to Division of Human Right ! Now I am about to get fire, and I don't have enough money to hire another lawyer. Please don't waste your money on this lawyer.

This attorney (Vincent j. Andreassi )reviewed an NYC Parking Ticket. I gave proper evidence (pictures) and a proper argument as to why I should not be guilty. Looks like all he did was read the ticket and not even review the evidence just so he can get it out of his hands. Instead of the proper judgement he just wanted to collect his pay because in the end its about money and not justice. Just another shoddy lawyer employed by the city to gain revenue. Avoid!!!!

1st arrest. I was charged with DWAI, common law DWI, and reckless driving. Despite being stopped at a checkpoint and having a BAC of .07%, which suggests that both the reckless and DWI would likely be dismissed if I took it to trial, Ms. Narumanchi ineptly tried to convince me to accept a plea to the DWAI - the only thing left to actually fight! Furthermore, she scheduled my court date 2 months after my first hearing: even the judge questioned why so late on record. Either she is too busy or too lazy but taking on cases and then abandoning her clients is her method. I sent her 2 emails within 23 days of no communication. I suppose keeping me informed seemed to be such an outrageous request that she dropped me as a client. Lesson learned: Free legal aid means no legal aid. You get what you pay for.

If this is the Monica Sheehan who is a Legal- Aid attorney working out of the Brooklyn Court house she is a disgrace to the profession. She needs to retire. And Fast. She has no regard for anything and was not only disrespectful and rude, she had little to no regard for her clients. She repeatedly told her client to shut up, and to not ask stupid questions regarding his case. HIS CASE. If she is what it means to defend "poor new Yorkers" we are all better off in jail. Horrible person.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
