He is patient and soft spoken . In my opinion he is a silent crook who is for the buyers not the sellers. He overcharged for the retainer cost. He gave the buyers more money than discussed without discussing any information with me, He does not communicate information to his clients as needed. I did all of the foot work and calling to get things done before closing. With the assistants of the realtors. He was no assistance, but tried to overcharged me at closing over $1000 dollars. My opinion he is lazy, and just want the pay check. Be careful if you hire him stay ontop of your information needed.

Marc Paz is an extremely patient and thorough attorney. While recommended as a closing attorney for our first mortgage, we had such a good experience with him that we asked him to assist us with our wills, (my living will) and to set up a trust for my son. Marc is both personable and professional. He did not just “do” his part and collect a fee. Unlike other attorney’s I have dealt with, he explained each step of the processes so we understood what was happening before we signed any piece of paper. I highly recommend him.

Was recommended by someone but he's a terrible lawyer. Makes constant mistakes, despite claiming to have years of experience, doesn't follow up on time, and says things will be done at a certain time (but never actually does them). Maybe he's too busy with other clients, but I don't see the professionalism here.

My divorce was not complicated. He said I'd likely even be getting money back from my retainer. We weren't fighting about anything. Instead, this got dragged out more than two years because Harlan couldn't be bothered to move on anything quickly. I got billed for phone calls and emails going over things we had ALREADY discussed that he forgot. This divorce cost me over $10k for his disinterest. I'm appalled- and broke. This is monstrously unfair to me.

No one wants to be in a nasty divorce, appearance before a. Judge, stand trial, but if you need to like I lived I couldnt have been better represented. In summary I was married over 20 years, life changes people. I believe without Steve to guide me and perpare me my outcome would have been drastically different. I personally had three separate different law firms represent me, all of which I fired. when I came to Steve my case turned around 360 degrees, He listened, responded and was avaliable to speak when issues like in any trial surfaced needing immediate attention. I would and "have" recommended Steve, he earns his fee and gets results.

Obviously this is just an opinion. But I’d avoid this horrible woman at all costs. This woman is not only truly nasty but she doesn’t bother to know her clients at all. I’m not sure she even cares about clients in any way. I can’t for the life of me figure out why anyone would want to continue using her. She’s rude. She’s mean. She’s unfriendly and I don’t think she’s even competent. I think there is truly something wrong with her:

If you are looking for a lawyer who cares about you personally and about your case at least as much as you you care, who is extremely resourceful, logic, kind and well rounded - Eleanor Grosz is the one! With my perfectionism, I was switching 3 lawyers, and interviewing about 15 of them prior to hiring Eleanor. From the first day of working with Eleanor, I got the feeling of "finally this is it" and ever since then, I was blessing day after day how good it was not to settle for less. Eleanor is just Amazing and so her team. The lawyers that works under her just got the same qualities of personally caring a lot while deliver an incredible high standard of service.

I hired Anthony Marchesi for my divorce case. Big mistake. I trusted that he would take good care of my case. I have 3 children and am a victim of domestic violence. So Anthony Marchesi said he understood how difficult it was, etc, and that he would do a good job and look out for me because he is divorced too and understands what a painful process it is. It was all lies. All that happened was a botched job and me having to hire other attorneys because he was so negligent with my case. He barely did any work on it and padded the bill and completely overbilled me by blowing through retainers almost immediately claiming that he needed more money to continue. I had to fire him and get a different attorney because he was sucking me dry. I lost thousands to him. To add insult to injury, currently he is suing me in Nassau County Supreme Court. I had to hire another attorney to defend myself against his ridiculous lawsuit against me claiming that I owe him money from years ago when in fact he ripped me off to begin with! He really knows how to take advantage of vulnerable people and kick them when they are down. Please don't make the same mistake I did. Stay far away from this attorney because if you hire him, it won't be long before you have to hire a different attorney to defend yourself against him! He and another attorney named Ralph Bontempo who handles trials for him have a little game going on where they split profits they extract from nuisance settlements against people.

I had an awful experience with this attorney. Don’t use any Nassau County attorneys if your spouse has one in the county. They all know each other and don’t care at all about the client and your rights. You’re another person they get rich on. She did absolutely nothing for me she supported my husband and never looked at his financials. I lost 45,000 in an annuity and I took care of the home he left. He got equity but that wasn’t enough. He wouldn’t split his annuity equally. She did nothing and I mean nothing to support and investigate my ex husbands accounts etc I had so much information and records but nope go to Suffolk or use someone in Westchester far from Nassau County. They all go out on your expense with the money they take from clients. Stay away!!!!

Represented me in custody/visitation case. Provided very lackluster representation. It's understandable that lawyers are quite busy however she never returned my calls or emails. Never did follow up with my case. Impossible to get in touch with: left numerous voicemails and emails and never received a response from her. While in the courtroom, she volunteered and told the judge the she would write up a temporary order on the spot for the judge to sign. Following the same proceeding, she carelessly made the comment that she wasn't writing up the order. She agreed that she would submit that same order later on and never did so which caused confusion for visitation and custody terms on the next court date. During those months in which I've worked with her, she never made an effort to consult with me and when I tried to approach her about it she'd constantly tell me we'd discuss things later yet never did follow up when I reached out. Consequently, she constantly came to court unprepared without any background on how to move forward with my case. Very unprofessional as she had the audacity to insinuate that I shouldn't have decided to have children with the opposing party and that I should just deal with the situation as it is (in spite of the fact that there was domestic violence present in the relationship). This lawyer was more against me than for me. It is my opinion that she is either burned out or has a preference for handling certain cases, in other words, working with clients of a certain background/ race/ culture over others. She needs a refresher course on Attoney's Model Rules for Professional Conduct; specifically in regards to the Client-Lawyer Relationship and Maintaining the Integrity of the Profession.

Ilene was my lawyer. I now need to go back to court several years later due to all the errors she made. Allowed my ex husband to have a cap and follow all standards of the nys child support laws. She told me she made sure was my son was well taken care of and she made stipulations to the divorce agreement as she had me sign every page. $50k later I find my ex has truly been gifted by my lawyer to just follow Nys child support act. What was I paying all this money for to negotiate when she basically followed all Nys standards for college, no sports, and allowing him to maximally pay $2100 per month towards child support when his salary is now over $300k. That’s not even 10 percent when I was the one left paying all of the bills. Now need to return to court to fix all of the courtesies she left for my ex to take. I assure you, she never would have signed the agreement she handed me with a smile.

Ilene represented me in my divorce 4+ years ago. Her name was given to me as a referral by a professional-whom I respected. They knew someone who used Ilene and recommended her. She was kind, honest and alway kept me informed. Not something you ususally hear about a lawyer. My ex was HORRIBLE and went after everything-trying to leave me penniless and childless. Ilene fought for me and got everything that mattered to me. She always told me the truth. To this day, I continue to call her with questions. She is ALWAYS available for me. Just as kind and honest as when she represented me. I continue to give her name out as a referral. Not one person who has used her because of me has regretted it. Everyone has nothing but good to say about her. She is very respected in her field. I would recommend Ilene to anyone. She may not be the cheapest- but for a decision that will last the rest of your child's future, SO WORTH THE MONEY.

We hired Mr Green for a case that had two parts (two different courts). He said he would represent us until the end of the case (through both courts). But I remember him saying also how busy he was, that he had bigger cases (for more money), but still took our case. The first part of our case was completed; me and my husband had a meeting with Mr. Mark Greene for the second part of the case. Couple days later he stopped answering his phone calls and returning my emails. We called his office and left messages every day but no calls back. I personally spoke to the secretary, i think her name was Christine, who told me that she always pass our messages. Mr Greene was very unprofessional because he could have told us to hire another lawyer for the second part of the case instead of hiding.

He lied to me about what could be done, then once I signed to hire him and paid the $3500 retainer I barely heard from him except to receive additional bills in the mail. I made a big mistake in choosing an attorney who I knew nothing about and who acted like he had a large firm when in fact that it was just him and one other young lawyer working for him (the office is set up so you can't see where they actually worked, which was upstairs from the meeting room they keep you in). Lost the case and spent a huge amount of money for nothing in return.

Sylvia Goldschmidt is the worst! She bullied me into settling for worthless LLC’s. The divorce cost over $200,000 and she did no follow up after I settled. I had to hire another attorney who told me what a bad deal I made and that she did not do any forensic accounting. However she did have me hire a forensic accountant who did nothing for an additional $50,000. She would not make any appointments with the other attorney at her office, so she could charge by the hour for the drive to and from NYC. I can go on with so many stories as she dragged the divorce on for 3 years…

when i retained him for my divorce he gave me a pep talk that we held the upper hand. as the negotiations proceeded his arrogance and swagger continued. the other attorney outmaneuvered him at every point. at one point i made a suggestion as to strategy and he said the judge would see right through it and hold it against us. after 3 more months of setbacks he suggested the strategy that i had suggested and when i said i suggested that, he denied ever hearing it. i fired him hours later. his negligence cost me almost $25K in fees and put me in a position that the new attorney told me was untenable. my ex got almost 70% of our assets including 50% of the value of my medical practice which i started way before i even knew her. the new attorney was shocked how he bungled my case.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
