My initial impression upon consultation was positive, so I hired Mrs Sokolich. Unfortunately, covid happened and things were moving slow. Too slow. It seemed as though Mrs Sokolich put me on a back burner. Further, for court dates, she failed to tell the judge some critical health information about me that would potentially save me thousands of dollars. The straw that broke the camels back is when she didn't put up an argument or resistance to outrageous demands from the opposition. Instead she told me nonchalantly that this is what they want and will probably get. There was no fight in her. I felt like she was not on my side. I immediately consulted 5 separate attorneys (3 recommendations from friends and 2 from Avvo) and they all told me that I was correct about the demands being outrageous and even assured me that the demands would not stand up if my case went to trial. Further, they agreed that if Mrs Sokilich had first told the judge about my health issues that the pendulum would have surely swung in my favor. I ultimately hired an ace of an attorney off of Avvo and dismissed Mrs Sokolich. I am not bashing Mrs Sokolich. She is a very nice person and I am sure she has and will serve many people well, but she is not the right attorney for me.

Awful. Actually what is worse than awful. Never met him. His associate dealt with everything and she was just as curt as he was in emails. Felt like we were treated at the bottom of the barrel even though we were paying them a fee to close on a home. We always had to make the first contact, and felt like we were burdening them everytime we had a question about anything. Everything they did was last minute and inaccurate and I constantly had to check on their numbers and work. Do not waste your money. You can get a cheaper, nicer, and more respectful lawyer than the ones at this office.

Used this attorney on recommendation of the real estate broker. At no time in the course of the closing process have we ever met him. Not once would he come on the phone. He would occasionally answer emails, but occasionally not. Issues that arose at the closing which might have been anticipated and elucidated in the contract were not, making the closing painful. Finally, we paid 3 days extra interest to the bank because he didn't WIRE the buyer's funds to our bank to pay off the mortgage. Total of $700 lost.

Phillip Peter Nikolis did such a poor job representing my family, fighting for financial relief after a family tragedy that concluded with a loss-of-life, so poor that I must question how he is licensed in the state of New York. His general communications with us are the worst that I have ever seen or experienced from anyone in the legal field in 50 years, just for starters. You will chase Phillip Peter Nikolis to actually DO work for you post-hiring; you will chase him to find our what exactly he is doing; you will chase him for your settlement. He continually (almost strategically) makes excuses on getting your settlement money like I have never seen or heard. He will exasperate most people, I am sure with his low-energy/poor communication style of representation. Phillip Peter Nikolis also seemed to me to work for the interests of the County in the end, while claiming to our faces that he represented our interests. He had zero ambition or desire to make a fight of it and subtly pushed for us to make a settlement based on what the County was directing, with little consideration of our prior directives or expectations of him. Beware if you are going against the County. Those seem to be all of his friends, not yours! Phillip Peter Nikolis is an incompetent lawyer, in my opinion. After having the experience of dealing with him for quite a few years on our case, I feel that Phillip Peter Nikolis, based in Long Island, NY, should have his licence revoked or should get out of the business of claiming that he does legal work representing people. It's appalling work, combined with a shoddy representation, nearly ensuring a low-settlement. Lastly, this individual also has 'no shame' in his sub-par game. He does it all with a smile.

This is not a lawyer you want to employ if you don't have a fortune to spend on fees - she charged me almost $30,000 during the worst year and a half of my life - I ended up with $78 a month in alimony and am actually having to pay "credits" to a scumbag who makes almost twice what I do...they lost my "discovery" documents, made innumerable mistakes in financial calculations and correspondence (they are a "cut and paste" operation - one statement had some other person's name in my records) - just overall awful results - I am now bound to an agreement that in no way favors me...she is washed up and all talk, no results. Don't make the mistake I did!

Always late, never speaks up for her own client, uses e-mail for everything, only calls for money, and that is constantly, very expensive for little to show if anything. She tells you how great you are and then couldn't care less if you exist or not, and 2 years later and still no divorce but 24,000 in the hole before I dumped her. Thanks Joan

Joan was always late to court. Did not show up twice, made me sit there for 2 hours and never called. I was on the phone with her office, who told me she was in the court house. I even texted her phone with no response. She billed me for things she did not do, or try to do. She also hired another attorney. I was her first divorce case, and was losing due to her giving in. I did fire the firm and went somewhere else whiched help me out. It seemed the only time the firm called was for payment. The bill got to almost $10,000 with no sight of getting divorced. Example of one case is I asked Joan for my Exs financial, she said it was not filed as of 11/10. My new attorney asked for it for my Exs financials from her lawyer and received it 10/10.

Nancy Gianakos failed to provide proper service for my case. She bullied me into a deal that resulted in me paying two thousand dollars a month for 12 years of spousal support. (I make $53,000 a year.) When one does the math, I was left with NOTHING after taxes. I trusted her to do the right thing and she destroyed me. A few years later, I consulted with another attorney and he explained to me that the payments Gianakos arranged were beyond outrageous. and should never have happened. I had to pay a second attorney to re-negotiate terms so that I am now just barely able to survive. Nancy Gianakos is not a good divorce attorney.

I hired Dana to handle my divorce case too. I agree totally with the other review of her. She promised a lot and then backtracks from it later on. I paid her well into the six figure range when she told me it was only going to be 10 to $20,000. She was a little off I would say. The opposing attorney was trying to settle my case but Dana told me it wasn’t time yet so I had another year of expenses that I paid to her. She didn’t seem very eager to try and settle the case for me. As the other reviewer said, there came a point where I didn’t trust her either. I felt that she was using what I said against me. I would search out another attorney. I do not recommend her at all. Why is it she’s been an attorney for thirty years and she doesn’t have any reviews either????

We all hire a lawyer with the intention of getting what we deserve in the end. Ms. Finkelstein charges alot of money for services provided as well as unprovided. Just like every other lawyer, everything is promised to you in the beginning and you end up with nothing but a huge bill in the end. She eventually worked against me instead of for me. I would not recommend her and people had warned me but only when it was too late.

Not satisfied with service and outcome. Unprepared for court and never on time. Never returns phone calls. Almost two years in the system all he does is prolongs your case. I had to go behind his back and make appointment for mediation and that's how I settled my case. I was my own attorney. He's great at making the bill larger and that's the only thing he's good for. Does not fight for you at court just sits there and let the other attorney take charge. Never did the things he was suppose to do but charges for it. Even when you bring the bill to his attention gets angry and doesn't want to speak about it. If you get behind on payments he goes after you worse than a loan shark. Finally I had to terminate his services or shall I say lack of services. Horrible Attorney! Please do not retain.. Go to mediation. Saves so much money and time.....

This is the lawyer I first came to when I decided a divorce was needed. Initially he promised the moon and stars, and when we would get to court, he would not deliver based on the fact that he was promising scenarios that were not backed up with actual laws, but more what I wanted to hear. He advised I file a petition with Family Court that took 6 hours of my day and on the day of the hearing I was humiliated when Family Court judge ruled it was out of his jurisdiction when a divorce was already filed and pending with the Supreme Court...a scenario this lawyer could have anticipated and brought to my attention beforehand to save me time and money. I wasted thousand of dollars on this man to continuously be ignored by him and not receive not one call from him for two weeks. His assistant and all other members of the administration team in his office apparently do not have email addresses , so I had no choice but to constantly call his office. Very aggravating to work with this man.

Bad advice, makes typos, cost client a lot of money with no resolution. Nearly half a million in legal fees and nothing to show for it. Linda does not fight for her clients and causes major distress while continuing to charge and then threatens to “ lay down their pens” when the bill approaches $50,000 mark again. Forget the fact that $400,000 was already paid. This woman should be dis barred for incompetence and price gouging. Lets her opponent walk all over her. Guess lawyers are all about billable hours. We have to get together to get her out of this parasitic profession

I hired this Linda for my divorce case, I had to fire her and went to a different lawyer. Looking back, I noticed how unprofessional she was. She took advantage of my situation: I was in shock and desparate. She not only did not help me, but also gave ill advices to me and cause me dearly on my divorce case. She did not really do anything. The paper she filed for me had typos and I had to go back to her to have the errors corrected. (of course, I still had to pay the time she "correct" her own msitakes that I spotted). After I fired her, my new lawyer immediately made "sound" decision and took and "quick" actions and made the situation much better. The advise she gave me was proven totally "wrong". Still, she charged me the time she was not doing anything. She represents the worst of lawyers. Do not go to her. I will file a complaint at Bar Association. This type of lawyer is the shame of the law community! Do not use her!

If you are looking for a lawyer who is impersonal, extremely difficult to reach, condescending and keeps you in the dark in your most vulnerable state of divorce, passive, defensive and certainly not proactive, greedy, and ultimately inflexibly overpriced - this is your man. Although very cordial at first, you will find that when he told you he would be present in all court appearances for you, that meant an associate of his would actually be representing you in court and he would theoretically only be present during a trial if that ever happens. Otherwise, don't expect even a nod from him when you happen to see him in court with his other clients. Everything I heard about him and his reputation was unfortunately far from reality during the time his firm was representing me, stay away.

Avoid this attorney. I retained her to protect my interests and she failed miserably. She was retained for a simple residential closing and missed a significant component of the purchase; namely that I was to have beach access rights. This valuable right was clearly mentioned in the contract of sale as well as the title report - which she clearly didnt bother to read. As a result, the access rights were left off the deed. I now have to retain new counsel to amend the deed. As a further insult, when this was brought to her attention, she saw fit to attempt to charge me an additional $700.00 to correct her mistake.

This woman was an absolute horror show during my divorce. I don't think she means harm but she has no sensitivity to the stress of going through a divorce, she actively yelled at me at least twice for giving answers she didn't like. Even though she knew I was a victim of, among other things, verbal abuse from my spouse. She made me cry at least three times for things no client should be made to cry over . I was traumatized by my experience with her, she is completely insensitive to what it is like being someone going through a divorce. It got to the point where it was more stressful being with her than the husband I was trying to divorce so in an act of desperation I settled with him just so I would not have to see her anymore.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
