I was thoroughly impressed with Kayla Horacek. She handled my child custody case with such professionalism. Going through a custody case can be nerve racking, but Kayla kept me informed every step of the way and she was able to get me sole legal and physical custody of my child. Her impressive and extensive knowledge of the law, especially family law is one of the many reasons you want to have her as your lawyer. I would recommend her again and again!

Richard Nahigian came very highly recommended to me via other lawyers in the same field of a different type as well as word of mouth. His experience in Los Angeles alone is vast and is he is revered in other states as well. The odds were so against me from previous felonies and he was so helpful in coaching me through realistic expectations and analysis of the law. He always answered my calls and took the time to calm my nerves. He had a great repertoire with the other attorney in the courtroom as well as the judge. I truly am surprised to see such a negative rating and review as by word of mouth alone I have heard so many success stories, my own included, which is why I hired him.

Shanon Quinley just finished my two year divorce process. She has been there to settle the case through mediation when my ex and I were getting along and she has been there to fight for me when that was needed. She is an excellent attorney. She is tough and straight forward when she needs to be and she is compassionate and there to listen when I needed her to be. I am so grateful I was given her name and made the call and decision to hire her! I couldn't have gone through this with out her and wouldn't have wanted to. Thank you Shanon!!! I just can't thank you enough!!! Shanon is extremely professional and organized and personal and kind. I can't say enough good things about her. In the end my ex and I were able to come to an agreement and that I credit to advice and action from Shanon. I wouldn't hesitate for a second before recommending Shanon Quinley to someone.

I am 100% satisfied with the representation I have received from Don and his team. Don is organized, detailed and dedicated. I trust him completely. Don has integrity. I have witnessed attorneys who play dirty and Don is not one of them. He presents the facts, he knows the law and handles himself with dignity. We have gone to court twice and both times the outcome has been favorable to our side, Without a doubt, I have retained the best legal team around. Thank you for going above and beyond and working so hard for ME.

April 29, 2015 I cannot begin to express the gratitude I have for Brett Johnston, Esq. Before I was referred to Brett, I had the unfortunate experiences of three other family law attorneys. They took thousands of dollars in fees, but literally did nothing to move my case forward. I was discouraged and scared. My former spouse is an attorney and was using all the tools at his disposal to ruin me financially. I had no more money, my credit was destroyed and I had about given up any hope of a fair settlement. When I explained my situation to Brett, he was incensed. He told me he would help me and he did. Finally I had a true advocate. He took charge, moved the case forward and has helped me recoup some of the funds taken from me. Brett has always been responsive and pleasant. During our time working together he became certified in family law. When he talks, other attorneys and judges listen. He is very good at what he does. Having to spend time in the family courts is a nightmare for anyone. If you are fortunate to have Brett on your side, your nightmare might be only a short, bad dream. Victoria

I had a lien placed on my house incorrectly by a supplier who essentially was attempting to coerce me into paying him for something that was not owed to them. long story short armen was fast to action and helped resolve the matter. Armen was well informed of the law and was extremely professional in every step of the process. I have hired him on retainer as a result of this.

Charles Gugliuzza is a great lawyer, truly. I've been in a tight situations before, but this (the last time) there was a problem with a construction paper. A friend of mine has recommended me to go to Charles Gugliuzza LLC and so I did. Mr. Charles was really helpful from the beginning, offered me a couple of solutions to my problem. I believe that he has huge experience with these matters, after all he is specialized into this. At the end of the day it Charles and I agreed to work together. In just a few weeks, as promised, my papers have been cleared and I am grateful for that. It was all done at a very professional level.

Ms. Brown is the epitome of an advocate. As an attorney myself, I truly believe I could represent my son's needs with the School District. However, that was the furthest thing from the truth. Ms. Brown is now handling our matter and I am beyond pleased. She is brilliant, thorough, effective, and compassionate. She is what every attorney should strive to be. My family is in the very best hands with Christina Brown. She knows the law inside and out but also has an excellent rapport with her clients. As an attorney, I know it was hard for me to hand over the keys and let someone else be in the driver's seat. But, I am so glad that I did. If you want the most effective representation, Christina Brown will provide that and more.

Carl D. Barnes has been representing me twice. I am so grateful that I met Carl; he was my attorney. Carl is the BEST. He cares for you and continuously keeps you informed. He ensures you get the best amount of retribution for the injury caused. If you choose Carl, you are lucky. Very lucky. He is the most professional, experienced injury attorney in Southern California.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
