I can enthusiastically recommend attorney Lorraine A. Smith based on her excellent representation of me in a difficult estate case. She was the 3rd attorney that I worked with, and was the only one to truly facilitate the case towards a satisfactory result for all parties. She very quickly came up to speed on a case with a long (8+ year) history and developed a novel approach and solution. She is intelligent, practical, clear, responsive, and compassionate.

I initially sought a consultation with Mr. Stewart regarding a real estate matter. Mr. Stewart was immensely helpful in clarifying the nature of my legal situation, and offered sensible and straightforward advice on how to defuse what was (to me at least) an increasingly complicated dispute. When the other party in my situation become more unreasonable, he and his firm were there every step of the way to advise, assist, and reassure. I should add that Mr. Stewart was also both clear and reasonable regarding his fees, and went to some length to help contain costs and provide legal services within my budget. Ultimately, Mr. Stewart helped me safely navigate and successfully resolve what could have become a protracted, costly legal situation. I strongly recommend his services to anyone in need of legal advice or representation in his practice areas.

Jim did a great job representing a family partnership in a complex real estate transaction, as well as getting all of our organizational documents in order. Jim was detail oriented and thorough. He was also a very kind advisor, understanding the multiplicity of personalities that he had to deal with, located in multiple states. I have already recommended Jim to a good family friend based on the confidence I have in his skills and the uniform pleasantness of my dealings with him. My family felt very reasonably charged for excellent service.

I am a current client of Mr. Willis, since Feb. 2016 so it's been quite a few months. I never ever thought I wound need the services of a bankruptcy attorney, so had no clue where to start. My legal insurance of course does not cover this action so no recommendations. Honestly I saw his Web site and called. Because I am in a wheelchair he came to my house, only attorney who even offered. Second he understood my situation which was due to fighting stage IV cancer for two years. It's financially devistating. Bottom line i am a very demanding client, to get a good recommendation from me you better do your job and be there when I have questions or need you. Three times Mr. Willis had to attend court at the last minute because I was ill. He did with no complaint. He is busy, so sometimes he cannot jump right back to calls, but he does respond! One major plus is that you can be blunt with Mr. Willis, he is your partner, and he would tell you I Am Blunt. Having worked as a Master Level IT Manager I demand a high level of performance. My case has not been easy, PA Revenue incorrectly charged me 9k of tax when I was owed refunds. He got to the right contacts to reverse it. BOTTOM LINE, he is honest, he cares, no he won't always pick up the phone, seriously not with all his clients, BUT HE WILL get back to you, he will take care of you, and THAT'S WHAT COUNTS. How many attorneys work and call on a Saturday/Sunday when needed.

In a stressful time, with my finances and emotions stretched to the maximum, Attorney Duchene's calm analysis of my alternatives and simple, insightful advice made it possible to make a decision based on real choices and not despair. She walked me through all the steps that I would need to take, the consequences of the decisions I faced, and what I could expect all along the way. She didn't judge me by the mistakes I had made and made it possible for me to stop and respond rationally. There's no one I would rather have on my side in a crisis.

I have worked with other lawyers in the past, and few leave you with a positive experience, but Mr. Lewis certainly did. I highly recommend him.

Phil has been essential to us as we have worked in investment real estate over the last 15 years. He's done two closings for us but more importantly he's been there whenever I have needed him. Just today I needed just a small question answered and called him around 3:15 knowing full well he most likely had a full afternoon and I probably wouldn't hear back until tomorrow. When my phone rang at 4:45, then, I was pleasantly surprised that he was there to answer my question. Nothing beats knowing that someone is there to help when needed. I will always use him for any real estate business that I have.

John C. did an excellent job calling me back almost immediately and taking time at no charge to discuss with me all my options including a succinct analysis of views from my side as well as the opposing party. He was able to essentially figure out what was going on before I told him. I felt put at ease, and my guess is I'll eventually switch this from Consulted to Hired. I should have known better regarding attorneys, it's far less costly to hire someone who is great at their work than someone who isn't but charges less. I've found his combination of pscyhological understanding paired with knowledge of the Pittsburgh area and elsewhere including specific people of which I have an issue to be extremely important. He already did the research, the other attorney didn't really bother, but if they did I would have been charged for thier learning which wouldn't come close to what Mr. Corcoran knew in knowing the people first hand and what they are like.

Mr. Livingston is a very good lawyer and helped me with two issues I had with medical groups. Neither case involved large sums of money, and I was concerned that could factor into how my cases were handled. Money wasn't the issue with Mr. Livingston and he handled both cases professionally, conscientiously and to completion and my satisfaction.

Matt was instrumental in guiding me through the process of obtaining a Limited Guardianship for my mother's estate, so that she would able to obtain the monthly annuity due to her from the US Navy, as a widow of a deceased Naval officer. This required the services of an attorney with a military certification, which is an area in which Matt is qualified to serve. The US Military does not accept a POA from the civil court as a means for me to handle my mother's financial affairs, due to her mental incapacity, and Matt represented me in order to obtain the necessary measures in accordance with the US Navy to fulfill that need. He handled the nature of my mother's disability with sensitivity and professionalism.

The Shrager law office gave my case to Heather Kelly. Do NOT hire Shrager... they talked down to me, like I had no brain, yelled at me for following up when they told me to, treated me like I was a criminal and the office smelled of ego. I had no choice. So glad they "sold" the case to Kelly. She treated me the EXACT opposite. Took my phone call, listened to me (every time I needed her too), treated me like an innocent (I was) human being! My case was not complicated and the end result 95% would have been the same without her but Im so pleased she was there by my side. She has a calming presence about her.

Top Questions to Ask a Lawyer

When meeting with a lawyer for the first time, it's important to ask the right questions to understand their expertise and determine if they're the right fit for your legal needs. Here are some top questions to consider:

  1. What experience do you have with cases similar to mine?
Ensure the lawyer has relevant experience in the specific area of law pertaining to your case.
  2. How do you charge for your services, and what are the estimated costs?
Understand the fee structure, including hourly rates, flat fees, retainer fees, and any additional expenses.
  3. What potential outcomes can I expect from my case?
While no lawyer can guarantee results, they can provide an assessment of possible scenarios based on their experience.
  4. What is your approach to handling cases like mine?
Learn about their strategy, whether they prefer negotiation, mediation, or litigation.
  5. Who will be working on my case?
Find out if the lawyer will handle your case personally or delegate tasks to other attorneys or paralegals.
  6. How will you communicate with me throughout the process?
Establish expectations for updates, preferred communication methods, and response times.
  7. What is the likely timeline for resolving my case?
Get an estimate of how long the process may take from start to finish.
  8. Do you have references from past clients?
Testimonials or references can provide insight into the lawyer's professionalism and effectiveness.
  9. What are the strengths and weaknesses of my case?
Understanding potential challenges helps you prepare and sets realistic expectations.
  10. Are there alternative ways to solve my legal problem?
Discuss options like mediation, arbitration, or settlement to resolve the issue efficiently.

How to Check the Credibility of a Lawyer

Before hiring a lawyer, it's crucial to verify their credibility and ensure they're qualified to handle your case:

  1. Verify Their License:
Check with your state's bar association to confirm the lawyer is licensed and in good standing.
  2. Experience and Specialization:
Ensure the lawyer specializes in the area of law relevant to your case.
  3. Disciplinary Record:
Look up any history of disciplinary actions or complaints through the state bar association.
  4. Client Reviews and Testimonials:
Read reviews on legal directories like Avvo, Martindale-Hubbell, or Google to gauge client satisfaction.
  5. Professional Memberships:
Membership in professional organizations or specialty bar associations can indicate a commitment to their field.
  6. Awards and Recognitions:
Honors from reputable organizations reflect expertise and a positive reputation.
  7. Consultation Assessment:
Use the initial consultation to evaluate their communication skills, responsiveness, and willingness to address your concerns.
  8. Ask for References:
A credible lawyer should be willing to provide references from past clients.

What Should I Prepare for My First Consultation?

To make the most of your initial meeting with a lawyer, come prepared with:

  1. Relevant Documents:
Bring all documents related to your case, such as contracts, correspondence, legal notices, court papers, or evidence.
  2. Written Summary:
Prepare a concise written summary of your situation, including key dates, events, and involved parties.
  3. List of Questions:
Write down any questions you have about your case, the legal process, or the lawyer's experience.
  4. Financial Information:
If applicable, bring financial documents like pay stubs, tax returns, or bank statements.
  5. Contact Information:
Provide details of any witnesses or other parties relevant to your case.
  6. Personal Identification:
Bring a valid ID for verification purposes.
  7. Pen and Notebook:
Take notes during the consultation to remember important points.
  8. Budget Constraints:
Be ready to discuss your budget and any financial limitations.

How Much Does a Lawyer Cost?

The cost of hiring a lawyer varies widely based on several factors:

  • Fee Structures:
    • Hourly Rate:
Lawyers may charge anywhere from $150 to $500 or more per hour, depending on experience and location.
    • Flat Fee:
For routine legal services like drafting a will or handling an uncontested divorce, lawyers might offer a flat fee.
    • Retainer Fee:
An upfront payment against which the lawyer bills hourly fees.
    • Contingency Fee:
Common in personal injury cases; the lawyer receives a percentage (typically 25% to 40%) of any settlement or award.
    • Monthly Retainer:
For ongoing services, businesses might pay a monthly fee for a set number of hours or services.
  • Factors Affecting Cost:
    • Complexity of the Case:
More complex cases require more time and resources, increasing costs.
    • Lawyer's Experience:
Highly experienced lawyers may charge higher fees.
    • Geographic Location:
Legal fees can vary significantly by region or city.
    • Additional Expenses:
Court filing fees, expert witness fees, travel expenses, and administrative costs may be extra.
  • Estimating Total Costs:
Request a detailed fee agreement outlining all potential costs.
Discuss any additional expenses that may arise during the case.
  • Negotiating Fees:
Some lawyers may be willing to negotiate fees or offer payment plans, especially for clients with financial constraints.
  • Pro Bono Services:
For those who cannot afford legal services, some lawyers or legal aid organizations offer services at reduced rates or for free.
